The Oseberg ship burial astounded archaeologists over 100 years ago with its sheer size, it’s trove of grave goods, and its excellent state of preservation. Many questions remain regarding the people who were involved with its burial, and the significance of many of its treasures.

Hi! I would like to suggest an episode about the humans of the Oseberg Ship? I'm not sure how much material you all would have to work with, since I know you tend to go for written records rather than archaeological. But from my very surface level knowledge, this ship burial was for two women (found together in one bed 👀), one of whom was likely intersex, so it sounds like something you might cover!
Hello! What a great suggestion - as someone with a bit of archaeological experience, I would like to do more archaeology based episodes - it's gives us a chance to get into talking about peoples where we don't have as much written material. Things can get very conjectural... but maybe this could also be a part of a larger conversation about how we intepret sex, gender, and relationships of people found buried in different ways.
Thank you!
Alice

Viking Queens of Oseberg
This morning I listened to the "Forbidden History" podcast for the first time, and it was so well done I had to share it.
The episode is titled "Viking Queens of Oseberg," and talks about the mystery of two women of similar status buried with grand treasures in a burial ship. The podcast interviews experts on the subject, and explain the myths and facts.

Happy Pride! In this episode of the podcast, we explore the varied gender identities of Viking witches. While the modern stereotype of Vikings is that that of the masculine warrior and dutiful wife, grave goods found at several sites illustrate the fluidity of gender in the Nordic and Icelandic world!

Next Week's Tumblr Top 5 Will Surely Put Us All to Shame.
I love that Shane's response to hearing the next Top 5 is about 'ships is, "I'm gunning for the Lusitania". Because 1. history nerd, and 2. I keep FORGETTING HE'S A HISTORY NERD BECAUSE I SEE PROFESSOR MCNASTY AS AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE ENTITY.
In the spirit of the joke, here's my Top 5 Historic Ships:
5. The Balclutha - built in Glasgow in 1886, this three-masted full rigged ship carried cargo all around the world before finding her way to San Francisco under the care of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, where she is open to the public, sometimes for shanty sings. Yes, I've sung shanties on board this ship, because of course I have. This one's a sentimental choice, one of the few good things left about my hometown.
4. The Charles W. Morgan - the last wooden whaleship still afloat, built in New Bedford in 1841 and now a National Historic Landmark at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Kinda hard to miss when you come into the harbor and it's just the absolute epitome of New England salty sea-dog vibes. Also: blubber pots.
3. The USS Constitution - yeah, some people are going to say this is a real normie pick. But you gotta hand it to her, she's beloved for a reason. Built in 1797 in Boston, this 44-gun frigate was in service protecting the US for the better part of a century before being retired from service in 1881. And she's looked good the whole time. There's something special about seeing a ship this old fire off her cannons.
2. ORP Piorun - the other ships on this list are ships you can visit today; alas, this WWII N-class was scrapped in 1955, but its legend deserves to live on. This ship's Polish crew, powered by wodka and the fire of vengeance, had the absolute brass balls to chase down the Bismarck without waiting for reinforcements. You need to hear this tale told by someone slightly drunk and meme-poisoned, so here's LazerPig.
1. The Oseberg ship - excavated from a Norwegian burial mound in 1904, this ship was made somewhere around 800CE and buried sometime after 834 with a wide variety of grave goods that have told us a lot about Viking culture at that moment in time. There's nothing quite so sexy and absolutely terrifying as the curves on a Viking ship, let alone a Viking ship that has come back from the land of the dead, so this one's an easy number one on my list.

Day Brightener - Some Pretty Cool History
The Oseberg cart, discovered in the Oseberg Ship, is the only complete Viking Age wagon ever found. TRIQUETRA VALKNUT HOW TO
This explanation is all the more plausible since the form of heathen Norse magic that the sources mention the most often, namely seidr, used imagery related to spinning and weaving fiber to symbolize altering the course of events. Ellis Davidson, “Odin had the power to lay bonds upon the mind, so that men became helpless in battle, and he could also loosen the tensions of fear and strain by his gifts of battle-madness, intoxication, and inspiration.” She and others interpret the Valknut, with its knot-like appearance, as a symbolic expression of this idea. In the literary sources, Odin and his attendant spirits such as the valkyries often use magic that is described in terms of binding and unbinding, tying up the mind or untying it. Odin was also one of the most powerful of all magicians and shamans. To find associations with both death and Odin together should come as no surprise, since Odin was, among many, many other things, a psychopomp – that is, a figure who ferries the spirits of the dead to the underworld and then back to the world of the living – as well as the leader of various hosts of the dead, such as the warriors of Valhalla and of the Wild Hunt. For example, the Anglo-Saxon urns feature depictions of horses and wolves, two animals that are often the companions of Odin in the Norse mythological tales. Even in instances where he’s not present directly alongside the Valknut, we often find other symbols that are closely associated with him. In most of these cases, Odin is also present. Similar-looking symbols can also be found on the cremation urns of the Anglo-Saxons, another Germanic people closely related to the Norse linguistically, ethnically, and in terms of their pre-Christian worldview and religion. In the archaeological record, the Valknut appears only in connection with the cult of the dead, as in the aforementioned runestones and ship burial. The longer answer is: The Valknut on the Stora Hammars I stone, Gotland, Sweden What, then, was the meaning of this symbol? Its name isn’t mentioned in any period sources valknut is a modern Norwegian compound word that means “knot of those fallen in battle” and was introduced by Norwegians who lived long after the Viking Age. Archaeologically, it appears on several runestones and pictorial memorial stones that date from the Viking Age and stand on the Swedish island of Gotland, as well as on grave goods from the Oseberg ship burial in Norway. Visually, it’s comprised of three interlocking triangles. The Valknut (pronounced “VAL-knoot”) is one of the most widely-discussed yet enigmatic of all of the symbols that appear in connection with Norse mythology.

Språng Interlinking and the Oseberg Ship.
As I've mentioned before, I have deep awe for the Oseberg Viking ship burial and the many treasures it ferried to the land of the dead. The one that's currently living rent-free in my head is this:
Tumblr media
A språng loom. I have a fondness for fiber and textile techniques that are no longer mainstream and/or on the verge of being lost. Språng interlinking was clearly something that used to be widespread and commonplace across Europe for several millennia, until the industrial revolution killed demand for the skill. What makes språng interlinking intriguing is that it creates an incredible one-way stretch, great for gathering things up or conforming to the contours of the body. It would have been so useful before the invention of elastic. It's also got some significant overlap with my interest in the 18th century because it was used to make officers' sashes. A commissioned officer's silk sash (ETA: the over-the-shoulder variety, not the later waist sash) could probably be used to carry him off the battlefield if he were wounded, because the språng would stretch wide enough to hold a body. Someone did a bit of experimental archaeology to confirm this was possible.
Also, for all of you writers and artists creating pre-industrial fantasy worlds, like... go watch a youtube video of someone making språng and tell me there isn't something extremely primal and magical in the little hand motions you have to do! And the whole braiding in a circle thing!
It takes all my willpower not to call this 'weaving' because it's warp-only and more like braiding or lace (plus the folks who do this will not tolerate you calling it 'weaving' and must take pains to distinguish it from warp-weft weaving, LOL).
