Chasing Winter Adventures in the Great White North: A Vanlife Tale Beyond the Clichés
By Alex Arseneault
When we hear about Vanlife most people see the classic cliché of someone laying on his bed rear doors open with a view on the ocean, right? For me, it’s anything but that.
Tumblr media
My name is Alex Arseneault, I live in Quebec City (Qc), Canada and I consider myself as a ‘’weekender adventurer’’. Experienced Kitesurfer / mountain biker / Snowboarder, I try to make the most of what my region has to offer while still have a normal job. The best tool I have found to make all those outdoors sports so much easy to handle is a Van. I often say to people that our van is our ‘’Mobile Chalet’’ ; it allow us to chase the best (Or worst) conditions, bring all the gear, be home everywhere and be selective on the destination.
Tumblr media
This winter I wanted to go explore further and experience what the alpine backcountry skiing has to offer in our region and because life is better when you are in good company, I wanted to do this trip with my girlfriend & our dog. Meet Cynthia & Gustav! The spot on the radar: The Chic-chocs mountains in Gaspesie. We prepared ourselves with an AST1 Course early in the season and analysis of the approach & terrain of each mountain in the Gaspesie National Park. Thank to the APP Ski Haute-Gaspésie that give so much information’s and you can also use it in GPS mode to find the official skintrails & descent hallway.
There we go. It’s early February, it recently dumped 25 to 40 cm in the mountains, the conditions are at their best. We checked the Avalanches & Weather Forecast, loaded the Van of food, water, gear and hit the road for a 6-hour road trip. The route become quite scenic when we left the Trans-Canadian highway and reach the route 132 along the Saint-Lawrence River. This road is famous during the summer but let’s say it can be quite hazardous during winter. We get excited when we reach the small village of Saint-Anne-des-Monts, which is the entrance of the Gaspesie National Park. The view is insane while we drive on the sinuous road between the mountains. At this point, we have no more signal. No cellphones, no internet, nada. Just us, our small house on wheels and the white mountains.
Tumblr media
We spent two days at a mountain called Mount Lyall. Well parked at the entrance of the skin track, we made our basecamp in the parking thanks to SEPAQ that allows autonomous Camper to stay in the parking for 25$/day. A dry toilet Cabin is at our disposal if required. We had amazing conditions, beautiful weather and even manage to bring Gustav with us for a descent in the treeline. What a nice experience, we felt so grateful to be out there together and enjoy winter at his best. Let’s be honest, winter in the east can somehow be challenging. Trip like this, certainly reconciles us with those ‘’Quebec winters’’. Oh... and speaking of ''challenging'' did I mention that it announces extreme cold during our journey? Well, Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings that covers most of the province with wind chills expected to be between -38 and -42 degrees Celcius. Not worried, we build our van for it, but we knew we were not going to go snowboarding in the backcountry in that temperature, let’s say that it would not be safe or even fun.
So, before this major polar vortex hit us, we spend another day in a mountain called Hog’s back. Same basecamp setup, different terrain. We did two laps on this mountain, but the conditions were a bit more challenging when we reach the Alpine terrain. A crust of ice covered the entire alpine territory which made the terrain unstable and difficult to cross. We then decided to stay in the treeline limit and managed to find some powder again. The highlight of the day was the encounter with a Caribou, a first for us! We were extremely lucky since this species is endangered. What a beautiful creature!
The next stop of our trip is a small village called Murdochville. This old mining town reborn from its ashes and has become the hub for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling in East Canada. We wanted to see this place, somehow sticked in the 80’s by its architecture and see what it has to offer. We parked the Van at the Chic-Chac resort wich has a ‘’Vanlife’’ space and offers access to showers and more... After a well-deserved shower, we spoiled ourselves with dinner at the Chic-Chac headquarter. This place is famous for parties and hosting events!
Tumblr media
The next day we walked the town and finally went for a lap on Mont Porphyre. Being located just outside the northern limit of Murdochville, this mountain allows residents and town visitors to ski directly from town. As the day progresses, temperature drop every hour and strong Northwest wind is picking up. We checked the forecast and there were no chances of doing any outdoors activities for the next two days in this ridiculously cold weather. We ended up driving in a polar vortex blizzard for 6 hours at 25 mph but managed to reach my friend’s house and spend the coldest night still comfortably installed in our van. Let’s just say that the webasto heater has run like never before.
Tumblr media
We spend the cold weather playing card games and drink hot chocolate next to the fireplace at my friend’s house.
I conclude on this quote: ‘’Winter forms our character and brings out our best.’’ Better enjoy it? #Exploremore

Dark Nights in Antakya On February 6, 2023, magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 earthquakes hit southern Türkiye and northwestern Syria, causing significant losses of life and destruction to infrastructure. Antakya, the capital of Türkiye’s Hatay Province, was hit especially hard. Data from satellites show that after the quakes, much of the region lost electric power. These maps show the amount of light emitted by Antakya’s city center and surrounding communities before and after the earthquake. The top map shows the area on February 4, 2023; the centre map shows the same area on February 8. The maps come from the Black Marble HD product, provided by Eleanor Stokes and Ranjay Shrestha of the NASA/USRA Black Marble science team. The maps are based on data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the NASA-NOAA Suomi NPP satellite. The basemap was built from data collected by the Landsat 9 satellite. The maps show widespread outages beyond the central business district of Antakya in suburban and exurban communities. Some of the darkened communities include Dursunlu, Harbiye, and Samandağ to the southwest; Günyazı to the west; Ziyaret to the east; and Alazı to the north. A wider view of the region shows that other provinces, such as Kahramanmaraş and Adıyaman, also appear darker after the quake. The second pair of maps (below) show that some lights returned between February 8 and 9, but widespread outages persisted in much of the region. Clouds on these days prevented the science team from assessing outages in the Antakya’s central business district. Raw, unprocessed images of night lights can be misleading because moonlight, clouds, air pollution, snow cover, seasonal vegetation, and even the position of the satellite, can change how light is reflected. The Black Marble science team processes the data to account for these factors. They also apply a technique known as “downscaling,” in which data from Landsat and OpenStreetMap are used to create a high-definition version of the product, the Black Marble HD. Nighttime imagery can help relief groups identify areas that are most in need of aid. The Black Marble product was one of several NASA datasets used by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) to make evidence-based decisions about disaster response during the Türkiye earthquake. Note, however, that the maps on this page reflect conditions as of February 8 and 9, 2023, and conditions may have changed since then. The high-definition data visualization maps make it easier to monitor power outages on a neighborhood scale; they should not be used to monitor power outages in individual buildings, homes, or roads. NASA’s Earth Applied Sciences Disasters program area is also tracking developments related to the earthquakes and their aftermath. They are sharing maps, data, and scientific expertise with multiple stakeholders to aid ongoing response efforts and risk assessments. As new information becomes available, the team is posting maps and data products related to the earthquake on its open access mapping portal. NASA Earth Observatory images by Lauren Dauphin, using Black Marble data courtesy of Ranjay Shrestha/NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from OpenStreetMap. Story by Kathryn Hansen with information from Eleanor Stokes (USRA/EfSI), Ranjay Shrestha (SSAI/NASA GSFC), and Zhuosen Wang (UMD/NASA GSFC).

2022 Year End List - #3
Tumblr media
Blue Rev - Alvvays
Main Genres: Shoegaze, Indie Pop
A decent sampling of: Noise Pop, Twee Pop, Dream Pop, Jangle Pop, Indietronica, Surf Rock, Neo-Psych
One of my most anticipated records of the year was the long-awaited return of Alvvays, the Canadian indie darlings fronted by Molly Rankin who hails from my own home province of Nova Scotia.
Debuting with their 2014 self-titled Alvvays, the band started off as staunch revivalists of that uber-hip late 1980s U.K. C86 jangly twee sound, with a nice splash of surf rock added in. All in all, a cute record with one very clear winner “Archie, Marry Me” which greatly overshadowed every other song on the record by comparison (Okay, “Next of Kin” was pretty great too).
2017′s Antisocialites expanded on the debut by venturing into more dreamy territory, and upping the songwriting significantly. The record definitely also left a lasting impression on the North American indie scene, as the band’s new record was definitely one of the most talked about upcoming releases in all of the music nerd spaces that I frequented this year.
In those five years of waiting, Alvvays have matured as artists. They also apparently went through development hell based on what I read about in the interviews leading up to this. But what to make of the end result?
Well, after teasing at it for years on their previous LPs, Alvvays has finally delivered with Blue Rev a full-on shoegaze record, a hazy montage of indie pop instant classics with hooks approaching Asobi Seksu levels of melodic gazing, and a cool, aqueous sound that brings it all together. With 14 tracks and a run-time of only 38 minutes, this record is a rapid-fire of a ‘best of indie 2022’ compilation  — except it’s just one band.
I’m struck throughout by the feeling of playing cozy 2D indie games in your bedroom, looking out of your window only to see that you are actually in a submarine as you watch a beautiful 16-bit mermaid swim by. (Note - I just want it on record that I drafted this particular observation before the concernedape music video was released, and holy crap it’s like they read my mind with the cozy 2D indie game aesthetics)
There's also something beautifully East Coast, or at the very least, coastal about Alvvays' sound. The band has always (hehe) reminded me of my local bustling waterfront during the summer season, and this album is certainly no exception. Indeed, this is a record that could just as easily soundtrack the crashing of waves, making big splashes off of lakeside wharfs, cotton candy and Ferris wheels, or even just holding hands by the campfire as much as it would suit your cozy bedroom.
“After The Earthquake” is jangle pop on steroids, with a disruptive adrenaline force and scattering guitar riffs that create an odd mix of upbeat urgency. Like many Alvvays songs, it is about the death of a relationship, only this time in a more literal sense with regards to the lyrics.
“Many Mirrors” is gorgeously drenched feel-good shoegaze, akin to psychedelic deep-sea diving in slow-motion, and designed to soundtrack a mental reel of all the best memories you made over the last year. Everything about this song radiates that feeling of home that a really great close friend brings you. My personal favourite cut off the record.
This bleeds right into “Very Online Guy”, a quirky, hauntological electro-gaze ballad, with a story about the life of a modern internet savant in our hyper-digital age contrasted by retro synths begging to be compared to the Commodore 64. It’s more than a little bit tongue-in-cheek, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one of the most aesthetically cool and clever songs of the year. The bridge is also godlike; there’s just so much sound going on in so many layers and it gives me euphoric chills.
Following that is “Velveteen”, a piece of delectably bittersweet indie pop displaying Molly Rankin’s unique talents for, as she once put it herself, “the pathetic perspective”, wherein this time she sings some of the loveliest lyrics about a woman who knows her lover has fallen in love with someone else by the signs of him putting more effort into himself. Tragicomedy at its finest.
Together, the aforementioned three songs earn my personal award for best consecutive three-track-run of the year. Gem after gem.
“Pomeranian Spinster” is a punky cuddlecore throwback circa. Heavenly with a delightful deceleration of spinsterhood. It is the most manic the band has ever sounded and I, like many others have already said, would love to hear what a full Alvvays record of this style would be like.
Compositionally speaking, “Belinda Says” is very much a companion piece to Antisocialite’s “In Undertow”. Both songs start of with a fuzzy, humble little synth jingle before erupting into a shower off pedal-heavy guitars and Rankin’s most sweetly and lackadaisically cynical vocals. Last time the lyrics were confronting a relationship that was on its last leg, but this time it is about the much more daunting task of confronting an unplanned pregnancy and choosing your life’s path.
I confess that “In Undertow” still remains my all-time favourite Alvvays cut (a tough act to live up to), but I do appreciate the continuity and sense of evolution from that song’s concerns to this one, and it is certainly up there as another one of the band’s greatest tracks.
Now, there are one or two moments where I experience some record fatigue from the rapid fire pop approach, where not everything ends up sticking. But that is very much the exception to the rule here.
It is evident that Alvvays continues to be on a very clean upward trajectory from their first full length record. They have gone from a solid 2010s jangle pop band, to bar-setting 2020s indie pop veterans.
And Blue Rev does everything the band already did best even better, with more sugary riffs and playfully self-aware, occasionally despondent lyrics for all of you fellow hipsters out there who love some poetic irony. These folks are keeping the flame of amazing 21st century Canadian indie rock alive, and to that I say hell yeah!
9/10
Highlights: “Many Mirrors”, “Very Online Guy”, “Belinda Says”, “After The Earthquake”, “Velveteen”, “Pomeranian Spinster”, “Fourth Figure”, "Pharmacist"

My Scarlet and Violet Soundtrack Ranking
Because the newest installment of the Pokemon franchise has been released to the world, and I love music.
So why not rank the soundtrack of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
It's been only two days, but I will still rank the soundtrack based on what I have heard. So yeah not every theme will be on here, but mostly the ones I took note of.
Title Screen Theme
7/10. So I can't find any official versions online of the title screen theme yet, but the cover of that band playing it sounds pretty decent. It's definitely going back to the more fanfare-ish and nostalgic recall aspect of the game. Instead of building on or continuing in a new direction from Sword and Shield, we seem to be going back in time. Which is good, but also idk. I mean, I know I wasn't the hugest fan of SWSH's at first either, but it took me some time and I actually like the SWSH theme. Anyway, the S and V title theme isn't bad by any means. I just thought it would progress and not go back? Idk. So yeah, 7/10.
Trainer Battle Theme
6/10, maybe even 6.5/10. In the beginning I can instantly pick up on the Gen 4/Sinnoh/Diamond and Pearl vibes. Which I like, don't get me wrong. It's definitely reworked a bit, as this is a new Pokemon game. But I like the call back. As for the theme overall, I would say meh. It's just a battle theme. There's not too much going on- which can be a good thing- but I think there could be a bit more excitement which is missing. It's not bad, but no one thing stands out to me. It's not leaving me thinking "oh my god I need to hear this again."
Wild Pokemon Battle West Province
6/10. Okay it could be a lot worse, but I don't know.. I feel like I'm being gracious with my score. But yeah, idk the Western theme isn't really vibing with me. But it's kinda funny because to me it sounds like the music from that one meme, the one that's like "to be continued" with the arrow. Not my favorite of the wild battle themes tbh.
Wild Pokemon Battle North Province
7/10. Only slightly better than the West Province battle theme. Also I guess I like slightly faster paced tracks so that might be why too lol. I love the guitar in this one tbh. I do appreciate it. I feel like I should be in a car just driving along to this song for some reason lol. But compared to the next two themes, it's still not my favorite.
Wild Pokemon Battle East Province
7.5/10. It's got a similar tempo to the North Province theme, and also has its own guitar motif going on. It feels like a car chase scene while I listen to it. Idk how else to explain it. Idk why I like it slightly more than the North Province one, but it still is not my favorite out of them all.
WILD POKEMON BATTLE SOUTH PROVINCE
9/10. OKAYYYYYYY. NOW THIS IS WHERE IT'S ATTTT. THIS ONE IS A BOP!!!! I WILL DEFEND THE SOUTH PROVINCE WITH MY LIFE!!! WHAT A FUNKY SLAPPING TUNE!!! THE WAY THE OVERARCHING MELODY JUST VIBES WITH THE BASSLINE. THAT BASSLINE THOUGH. IT IS UPBEAT, FUNKY, AND GETS ME HYPED. SOUTH PROVINCE BATTLE THEME BEST WILD BATTLE THEME.
Wild Battle Theme Inlet Grotto
I don't really have too much to say on this one. It's kinda just meh for me. It's not like really uptempo or anything. I like the more exciting themes I guess. I'm just indifferent to this particular theme. 5/10.
Wild Battle Theme Area Zero
8/10. Like the South Province theme, I will defend Area Zero. I like it. The funky little noises are great. I like them. And there's hints of the funky bass theme too. It's also upbeat. I just think this one is neat.
Team Star Grunt Theme
7/10. I mean, as a grunt theme, I feel that it works fine. Will it ever top Team Plasma? I'm not sure many things will. Sorry, not to be one to compare but Gen 5/Black and White was my first experience with the Pokemon games. However, I will say I really like the presence of the electric guitar in this one. Without that guitar, I would probably rank it lower. That guitar is what keeps me going.
Nemona's Themes
6/10. I know she has two, but I'm gonna rank them together because I can and no one is stopping me. I think I like her first theme slightly better than her final battle theme. The guitar in the first one. Again, if you throw in an electric guitar, you've already sold me, as I do love some good rock/punk rock. That's my genre. The beginning of her final battle theme sounds like the opening (or ending?) to an anime show. Although I do like that little piano melody in the middle section that plays for a bit. They're not my favorite themes overall though.
Arven's Theme
6/10. Another theme that doesn't particularly stand out to me, but I like that it incorporates a bit of that funk sound we hear in the wild battles, and it's uptempo. It's decent for a battle theme- but still not like, anything out of this world.
Clavell's Theme
5/10. I dunno. It sounds like a theme more for like, when you're going on an adventure, like exploring an area. It's really intriguing though, I will say, for the theme of the director of the academy. It's not AWFUL, but I don't think I'd be like listening to it if I had to choose a track. Kind of feeling basic about this one. Like, it's meh. Mid.
Tournament Battle Theme
6/10. Idk, that just feels right to me. I like that it's lively, and has a fast tempo. That part with the little flute melody is good, and then the guitar comes in after that- cool. Other than that though, I wouldn't say I LOVE it. But I don't hate it either. It's alright. I will say that when I saw this was for tournament battles, it made me miss double and rotation battles in Gen 5- I have such specific memories of going to the Battle House in Opelucid City and battling-BUT WAIT IS THAT SAXOPHONE I HEAR IN THIS THEME? Love that.
Legendary Quartet Battle Theme
7.5/10. It's better than the Titan Pokemon theme in my opinion. And while I like the Paradox Pokemon one, the Quartet Battle theme still just tops those two for me, lol. I love how the Quartet Battle theme just starts with those chimes to set the mood- but then it makes that noise which is like, okay it's about to get serious. Then it introduces that steady beat which gets my head nodding. And then the relic-y kinda vibes that come in- I like that, it's a neat touch. Giving Unova Desert Town kinda vibes.
Koraidon and Miraidon Battle Theme
7/10. Oh my goodness it totally gives the Unova gym leader final pokemon theme vibes in the beginning. Which I LOVE. Because that theme was a good one. Once again, I like that this game seems to be calling back to/referencing the past games. But yeah, this totally gives me revamped gym leader final pokemon vibes. And I'm here for it. It isn't my favorite theme ever, but I think it works for this generation and these legendaries.
Gym Leader Battle Theme
6/10. It's a very interesting theme to me. Also the chanting that then comes in later... Yeah I still have mixed feelings about it. Like, Sword and Shield's was so like, stadium EDM club vibes- but this one is interesting. This is funky and fast-paced, groovy, very unique. Like, it's outside the usual repertoire of gym leader themes. I may have to sit with this one for a while.
Iono's Theme
8/10. Now we're getting to the good stuff. Now this theme is interesting- but in a way that I like. Very good mix of funky, and the 80s/disco vibes are immaculate. This isn't a battle theme anymore, we're in the club now. I'm at the gay bar. LOL. I don't wanna fight you, let's just dance haha. This character has a BOP for a theme.
Team Star Boss Theme/Mela's Theme
8/10, maybe even a 9/10 tbh. Like, WOWWW. THIS IS HARDCORE!!! POKEMON MORE LIKE POKEMETAL. We actually! got! metal! in Pokemon!!! This track goes HARD!!! It's sooooo good. I love it. The guitar is everything. The punk rock/rock fan in me is loving it. THIS is how you do a boss villain theme. We love a good iconic theme. I could blast this shit out of my car, a window, honestly play it at a concert because I would be HYPE.
Elite Four Battle Theme
8.5/10. Once again, it's giving an amalgamation of previous games. I really like the theme though. I think it's a good fit for an Elite Four theme for this new set of games. Like it fits with the idea of Scarlet and Violet being something completely unique and different from the games we've had previously. Musically/sonically, it blends that amalgamation of previous generation's themes and incorporating new elements to the soundtrack. It's a fitting battle theme in my opinion. It's tense and strong- but just the right amount. It DOES make me want to actually battle. Like it should feel like the Elite Four are a challenge- and this track totally sets that mood.
Sada and Turo Battle Theme
Wow. WOWWWW. OKAY. NOW THIS IS A THEME. WHAT A BANGERRRRRRR. This went so hard. I love how it starts off in the beginning with a sense of calm, but then it suddenly goes hard and you're immediately thrust into the action. And then it just keeps going for a while. Like, WHEW. This is ACTION. I'm sweating. Because this track is absolutely fire. This one is a win. 9/10. I WILL be looping and replaying the shit out of this one, thank you.
Cassiopeia/Penny's Theme
9/10. HARDSTYLE??? IN POKEMON???!!! WOWWWWWW. POKEMON SERVED WITH THIS ONE!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS TRACK. WHAT IN THE FUCKING DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!?!?! I absolutely love the track. If you couldn't tell by now, this definitely one of my favorite tracks of the game. And one of the coolest tracks to come out of the franchise imo. As someone who also likes dance/EDM and rave music, this really hit the spot. This is so hype. I really want to play the game now, like just for this theme lol. Amazing job for whoever composed this one, thank you, you've made my day.
CHAMPION BATTLE THEME
And finally, the Champion Battle Theme.
10/10.
I will defend this theme for the rest of my life. Oh my god. I LOVE this theme. I wasn't sure what to expect. But I had a very visceral reaction to the theme when I first heard it.
Once that main theme from Gold and Silver/HGSS came in, I literally gasped. And then my eyes immediately watered. Yes, I teared up as soon as I heard that theme. Absolutely genius. Putting the theme within a theme. Perhaps using nostalgia really does work as a strategy. Like, god, idk how to explain it, but I feel like this theme just DOES it for me. It totally encompasses everything that has led up to this point. Like, it's showing the journey Pokemon has been on since the beginning. Through music. It's beautiful. Oh god, I'm getting emotional. Like, this is why I love this fandom. The music is always there for me- and this theme is an example of why I just have such a special place in my heart for Pokemon- as one of the fandoms I've been in for such a long time- it just gets me, you know??
It's been so amazing to see how far this fandom and Pokemon overall have come. Even though I wasn't one of the originals and didn't start my first Pokemon game until the DS era and Gen 5, this game has impacted so many people. And the music adds to that. I'm always looking forward to what the franchise does with the music. Sometimes it can be hit or miss. There was a mix for this set of games. But there were some real gems too. Welp. Until the next generation/games, I guess?

Venue preparations nearly complete for 2023 North American Indigenous Games
The 2023 North American Indigenous Games will begin this Saturday and will run until July 23.
“There’s multiple venues across HRM,” said NAIG CEO Brendon Smithson.
The RBC Centre in Dartmouth will host lacrosse inside and beach volleyball outside.
Soccer will be played at the BMO Centre in Bedford.
Cross Country will be run on the paths at Point Pleasant Park.
Beazley Field in Dartmouth will see track and field and baseball competitions take place.
Organizers are now in the final stages of prep work at all 21 venues in four Nova Scotian communities.
“Putting up some of the signage, putting up some of the pageantry and getting some of the sport pieces in them,” said Smithson.
250 paddlers will compete on Lake Banook in Dartmouth, at a time when the facility is putting the finishing touches on major upgrades.
“The judge’s tower has been basically renovated, and torn down to the studs and rebuilt. It will be ready to go for NAIG,” said Atlantic Division Canoe Kayak Canada executive director, Robin Thomson.
On Sunday, Scotiabank Centre will host the opening ceremony with close to 11,000 in attendance, to welcome the athletes and showcase the host nation of Mi’kmaq’ki.
“Opportunities like the North American indigenous games, or significant events like the world juniors,” said Events East executive vice president Suzanne Fougere. “Those are the opportunities where we get to have the biggest impact on our province. We do like to think we are the hub or the catalyst, and then things spread out.”
That “spread” includes the Halifax Commons, where even in the rain crews were setting up the cultural village.
“For me, the big excitement is the cultural apiece,” said HRM Coun. Tony Mancini. “The commons is going to be taking over and you were going to see this indigenous culture from around North America.”
The commons will host indigenous cultural demonstrations, food vendors and musical performances.

Smoke and Fire in British Columbia
Following Canada’s extreme wildland fire season in 2023, unusually early and intense blazes are already raging in 2024. Though wildfire activity does not typically become widespread or intense in British Columbia until several weeks later in the summer, smoke already smothered parts of the western Canadian province in mid-May.
The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image (above) of smoke billowing from several fires around the community of Fort Nelson and streaming east into Alberta on May 11, 2024. Terra and other NASA satellites observed the plume as it was lofted several kilometers into the air and spread eastward. The smoke drifted, at times, into parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States, triggering air quality concerns in several states.
One of the most menacing fires burned southeast of Fort Nelson and a nearby First Nation community, home to a combined 3,400 people. The fire grew rapidly after igniting on May 10, exacerbated by dry conditions and high winds from a passing cold front. Canadian authorities issued evacuation orders for both communities later that day.
“Due to the aggressive and extreme fire behavior, we strongly recommend that people avoid travel in and around Fort Nelson,” said British Columbia’s Wildfire Service Director of Provincial Operations Cliff Chapman in a video update on Facebook. “The fuels are as dry as we have ever seen. The wind is going to be sustained, and it is going to push the fire toward the community,” he added.
To the north of Fort Nelson, several other large fires each charred tens of thousands of hectares. Several of these fires were listed as “holdover” blazes that likely smoldered beneath the snow all winter before reemerging, according to data posted by the British Columbia Wildfire Service. Such fires lingered in vegetation that had been parched by a multi-year drought, classified as extreme by the North American Drought Monitor.
Tumblr media
The situation echoes 2023, when intense fires also burned in British Columbia in May. Daily fire intensity and carbon emissions from fires in the province have been unusually high so far in May 2024, according to data shared by Mark Parrington, an atmospheric scientist with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). In mid-May, carbon emissions from British Columbia’s wildfires passed 5 megatons since the start of the month, the highest May total for the province in 22 years.
Parrington tracks fire emissions for the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) using data from NASA. CAMS provides estimates of near-real-time wildfire emissions using its Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS), which aggregates MODIS observations of fires made by NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites.

As southern Manitobans brace for a major spring snowstorm fuelled by a Colorado low, there are probably more than a skeptical few feeling a bit of déjà vu.
Around this time last year, Environment Canada issued a warning about the same type of low-pressure system bearing down on southern Manitoba and carrying "the potential to be the worst blizzard in decades," but the snowfall was well below what was forecast in most areas.
Asked if there's a chance this one might also skirt by, Environment Canada preparedness meteorologist Natalie Hassell was steadfast in the forecast. "No, I'm sorry, there isn't," she told CBC Manitoba Information Radio host Marcy Markusa on Tuesday morning. "Right now, if it does track differently, we'll actually get more [snow], not less."
The low will center itself over North Dakota and Minnesota later Tuesday, with southern Manitoba affected by its northern extent, Hassell said. Heavy, wet snow is expected to start falling late Tuesday afternoon and continue until Thursday evening, the national weather service said in its winter storm warning.
By the time the system is done with Manitoba, it is expected to leave behind as much as 25 cm in the southeast corner and as little as five centimeters at the western edge of the warning.
Winnipeg is expected to see something in between that, from 10-15 cm. Environment Canada's warning area runs from Killarney through the Ontario border across the south. It stretches about halfway into the Interlake region and in the east, as far north as Manigotagan.
A fringe around the perimeter of that warning area, which includes Brandon, is listed as a winter storm watch, which means those communities could possibly see impacts from the storm, but it is less certain than in the warning area.
The extreme southwest corner of the province has no weather alerts at all. The snow in those areas will be heavy, wet, and sticky because the season is supposed to be spring and not winter, so there is a higher moisture content.
And then there is the wind. Wind gusts up to 70 km/h are likely, Hassell said. "I'm not sure if the winds are quite strong enough to throw stuff around, but if you have things that are loose on your property, it might be a good time to tie them down or put them away," she said.
"And get ready for overall difficult conditions," Hassell suggests being careful and taking breaks while shoveling. "Don't lift everything that you can [usually fit] in your shovel; lift smaller amounts every time, and don't twist as you lift, because that just leads to really bad scenarios."
While the snow is a disappointment for those hoping to see trees budding and new growth sprouting from gardens, it's really not that unusual, Hassell said. "We can get snow well into May. The amounts are reasonable in terms of what we can often see at this time of year for these types of storms."
On April 5, 1997, a Colorado low dropped 48 cm on Winnipeg and a little more in other parts of the south. It locked the Red River Valley in a whiteout that lasted 24 hours, forcing people to abandon vehicles and sleep in airports, offices, and even shopping centers.
That set the stage for the Flood of the Century, as the runoff from melting snow more than doubled the normal spring levels later in the month. Because of the wind gusts.
Hassell strongly advises against driving anywhere if possible so "you can avoid being in this mess because if we do have blizzard conditions, you're going to be stuck there for a really long time."
If you do need to travel, be sure to take an emergency road kit with you, she said. The City of Winnipeg said it is prepared to deal with whatever the storm throws at it. Crews will monitor road conditions and stand by, ready to apply salt to improve traction as needed, a news release from the city said.
Further decisions about plowing operations will be made as the weather system passes through. There are no winter parking bans in place at this time, the release said Tuesday morning.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority issued a warning Tuesday that community health services, especially home care, could be impacted by the forecasted storm.
Weather-related service delays or cancellations are possible for clients, depending on the severity of the storm and its impact on transportation and access to clients, the health authority said in a release.
Every effort will be made to maintain appointments, but some weather-related delays or cancellations may be inevitable. People who need home care are asked to initiate their backup plans, and those who have appointments postponed will be notified by the health authority.
The storm could have longer-term consequences after it melts. The province said its Hydrologic Forecast Center will closely monitor the snowfall and expects to have an updated flood forecast once the system passes.
The most recent forecast, from late March, said the Red River is expected to spill its banks in several places but not rise high enough to threaten any communities protected by ring dikes.
Flood forecasters raised the risk for the Red from moderate to major due to a series of snowstorms south of the border at that time. Finally, don't despair; spring is in the air after the storm.
There are actually signs of it in the forecast. Environment Canada forecasts a high of 11 on Easter Sunday and 16 on Monday, though Hassell thinks that might be a little optimistic.
"Considering how much snow we're about to get, it would all have to melt to make it to minus 11 on Sunday," she said. "I'm not saying it won't happen, but… five, maybe six degrees is probably more realistic."

The death toll from the huge earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria has risen to nearly 11,500, as rescuers continued to pull survivors from the freezing rubble and the Turkish president rejected growing criticism of the authorities’ response.
Making his first visit to the region since the 7.8- and 7.5-magnitude quakes hit within hours of each other on Monday, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday acknowledged early problems with Turkey’s response but said it was now working well.
During a visit to Kahramanmaraş province, near the quakes’ epicentre, he said 8,574 people had been confirmed dead in the disaster in Turkey. Syrian officials and a rescue group in the rebel-held north-west Syria said the death toll there was 2,662.
Experts have predicted the combined tally will rise further, perhaps to more than double, as hundreds of collapsed buildings in many cities have become tombs for people who were asleep when the first quake hit in the early morning.

Amid mounting anger at what many see as a slow and inadequate rescue effort, the Turkish president said there had been “some issues” with roads and airports but the emergency operation was now better and the situation on Wednesday was under control.
Erdoğan promised new housing within a year for those left homeless in the 10 affected provinces, where an estimated 64,000 buildings have been destroyed. He added that citizens should ignore “provocateurs” whom he accused of fanning discontent.

The president, facing an election in May and wary of the impact of any perception his government was failing in its response to Turkey’s most deadly quake since 1939, has declared a state of emergency in the areas concerned and sent in troops to help.
Survivors in southern Turkey and north-west Syria, meanwhile, spent a second night in the freezing cold, many taking refuge in their cars or under blankets in the streets, fearful of going back into potentially seriously weakened buildings.
A winter storm and subzero temperatures have rendered many roads in the region – some of them already severely damaged by the earthquakes – almost impassable, resulting in traffic jams that stretch for miles in some areas. A lack of heavy equipment is also severely hindering the rescue effort.

The World Health Organization has warned that up to 23 million people may be affected by the quakes. Many countries have so far pledged aid, and international rescue teams have begun to arrive. For those in the stricken areas, help could not come soon enough.
“Where are the tents, where are food trucks?” Melek, 64, in the southern city of Antakya, asked a Reuters reporter. “We haven’t seen any food distribution here. We survived the earthquake, but we will die here due to hunger or cold here.”
Emergency workers on Wednesday saved several children discovered under a collapsed building in the hard-hit province of Hatay. “All of a sudden we heard … the voices of three people at the same time,” said one rescuer, Alperen Çetinkaya.

In many parts of Turkey hit by the quakes, shops were closed and there was no heat because gas pipes had been shut to avoid explosions. “My nephew, my sister-in-law and my sister-in-law’s sister are in the ruins,” Semire Çoban, an infant school teacher in Hatay, toldAgence France-Presse.
“They are trapped under the ruins and there is no sign of life. We can’t reach them. We are trying to talk to them, but they are not responding … We are waiting for help. It has been 48 hours now.”
Authorities have said about 13.5 million people have been affected in Turkey. Aid officials were particularly alarmed, however, by the situation in Syria, already devastated by 11 years of a civil war that has hugely complicating relief efforts.

“Even the buildings that haven’t collapsed have been severely damaged. There are now more people under the rubble than those above it,” a resident named Hassan, who did not give his full name, said in the rebel-held town of Jindaris.
“There are 400 to 500 people trapped under each collapsed building with only 10 trying to pull them out, and no machinery,” he told AFP. Mohammed Shibli, of the White Helmets rescue group, said people were “dying every second” and appealed for help.
In Aleppo, Syria’s battle-scarred second city, Youssef, 25, had been waiting by the rubble of a block of flats since Monday for news of his father, mother, brother, sister and her nephew. “Nothing is known about them so far,” he said. He talked to them on the phone soon after the quake, he said, but had heard nothing since.

Syria’s government, which is under heavy sanctions by much of the international community, formally appealed for help from the EU on Wednesday, the European commissioner for crisis management, Janez Lenarčič, said.
He said the European Commission was “encouraging” EU member countries to respond to Damascus’s request for medical supplies and food, while monitoring to ensure that any aid was “not diverted” by President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Sun Myung Moon lied when he claimed: “I carried Mr. Chung-hwa Pak 600 miles from North to South Korea”

The three who travelled south together from Pyongyang were Moon, Chung-hwa Pak and Won-pil Kim.

Sun Myung Moon speech: The Necessity for the Day of Victory of Love
January 15, 1984 – Tarrytown, New York “Upon the victory of my prison experience, I can claim the foundation for the fatherland. After being liberated by United Nations forces [in October 1950], I carried Mr. Chung-hwa Pak 600 miles from North to South Korea. Most people aren’t even able to go beyond their own needs, but I showed the example of serving others by carrying Mr. Pak for that distance.”
Chung-hwa Pak said in an interview given in 1993 in Seoul that on the journey south from Pyongyang to Kyongju in South Korea, Moon had only carried him twice. Each time it was only for about 400 yards. Pak also clearly said that Moon had never carried him across any water and that the picture of a refugee carrying his father (see below) had nothing to do with himself or Moon.
Michael Breen recounts just two incidents of Moon carrying Pak in his book, Sun Myung Moon, the early years – on pages 129 and 135. And in an interview he gave to Today’s World in March 2000 (pages 28-29) he confirms that fact: Breen: “Also, Chung-hwa Pak, whom Father met in Heungnam, was extremely helpful. What was good was that he had an extremely detailed memory. One thing he was upset about was that church members believed that Father had carried him all the way to South Korea on his back. So he went into great detail describing the two occasions when Father actually did carry him on his back.”
Here are the words of Bo Hi Pak in an interview in the documentary “Emperor of the Universe” which was broadcast in 2000:

Narrator: “His followers speak with awe of how he carried an injured man across Korea.” Bo Hi Pak: “… roughly 200 miles walking and walking in a mountain he carried him on the back. 80kg man on the back, all the way to the south. To me alone that shows him the messiah to me.”
Sun Myung Moon and Bo Hi Pak were both liars.

The Unification Church / FFWPU makes false claims over photo to promote Moon as a ‘hero.’
Michael Breen’s description in his book ‘Sun Myung Moon, the early years’ (pages 135-136) is no doubt much closer to the truth than the words of Moon or Bo Hi Pak: “From Jechon, they took the old road, which used to be the main communication link from Seoul to the south-east in the days before the railroad. It took seven to eight hours one day to struggle over the Moongyeong Pass, at the boundary of North Chungchong and North Kyongsang provinces. Kim carried the bicycle, and Moon carried Pak up the steep, icy track, which was covered in fresh snow. At the top of the pass, they walked through the ancient gate. They stopped at the town of Caun. Pak’s leg was improving [his ankle had been fractured in Pyongyang] and from here, he was able to ride the bicycle without being pushed. …
[A short while later] With Pak now able to walk, they travelled rapidly southwards, through Andong, Uiseong, and Yongcheon. They arrived one evening at Koncheon, near the historic town of Kyongju. …
Moon and Kim Won-pil [left Pak behind in Kyongju and] continued on to Ulsan, a fishing port on the east coast. There they bought train tickets, and travelled the last fifty kilometres of their journey to Pusan in two hours. They rode up front, clinging on to the front of the engine. They arrived at Choryung Station in Pusan, cold and hungry, on January 27, 1951.”
Won-pil Kim used this “walking to Yongmae Island” photo in his own testimony book. The story is a complete fabrication and Kim contradicted himself when telling it. First he said there was a boat on the island and then he said there was none, etc… And he changed his own map of the journey, leaving the detour to the island out of a later version of his own map. He said Chung-hwa Pak had a full plaster on his “broken leg”. Pak’s ankle was fractured but soon was healed enough for him to ride a bicycle on his own as the three of them travelled south. His leg was never in a plaster cast. There were no medics to do that.

Won-pil Kim was a liar
When Kim’s island story was proved to be fake news, he quickly changed his testimony book and the Japanese UC issued a second edition without the photo he had fraudulently used.
Many church publications have the sole purpose of keeping the members indoctrinated with lies. Moon’s own speeches are no better.

Won-pil Kim was inconsistent with his lies. His own testimony book had to be revised.
