Let’s talk about Hospital Playlist. (KDRAMA REVIEW)

note: does contain spoilers

When people ask me what is my favorite Korean drama of all time, with no doubt, IT’S HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. This drama has the comic relief, the emotional scenes, realistic characters-just to name a few. No toxic relationships and petty revenge fights. Nothing else will stop me for saying that this is the ultimate feel good drama.

SYNOPSIS: The drama shows insights into the daily lives of doctors and nurses working at Yulje Medical Hospital. It focuses on 5 doctors who have been friends since medical school, who also play together as a band.

This drama encompasses so many elements and characters so bear with me yo this might be real long

Hospital Playlist is produced/written by the Shin-Lee PD and writer pairing, whose previous works were the renowned Reply trilogy and Prison Playbook (which are *chef’s kiss*) I really like that all their dramas really highlight humanism, and puts emphasis on creating a heartwarming and realistic series. There isn’t always a major conflict to be resolved, but instead it showcases how different people-in this case mostly those in the medical field-go on about their daily lives. I also liked their reasoning to produce a medical drama which was that hospitals were where the most dramatic moments occurred, for example during births, deaths or sickness. And since we are still in the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in greatly to be paying homage to all the medical personnel saving lives. Hence, props to those who were involved in this meaningful masterpiece <3

The drama is not the usual 16 episodes, but has 12 episodes for each season (SEASON 2 IS COMING SOON YAAS) Good thing is I felt that they were still able to weave a dynamic storyline in the first season even with lesser episodes. The writing was just top-notch with the witty humor bits. Additionally, the music is AMAZING. I love the concept of the main characters being a band and playing different songs every episode too.

Okay, now onto the characters. I thought that every character in this drama was well rounded. Starting of with the main five characters, also known as The 99ers, whose distinctive personalities and natural chemistry make all of them extremely likeable. All main characters are professors of different specialties, and I find the male OB-GYN (Seokhyeong) and female neurosurgeon (Songhwa) very refreshing. Also, I like Shin-Lee dramas always have characters that might be realistic yet hardly seen in other dramas or films. For example, Professor Ahn Jeongwon. Despite being a chaebol (inheritor/heir), he isn’t depicted as a spoilt brat or a cold character, instead as a warm Pediatric doctor who uses his wealth to secretly support patients in need. However it makes him stingy to his friends LOL

To be honest, I really thought I was gonna dislike Junwan due to his cold and tsundere nature. I pretty much believed that he was going to be the party pooper type of the bunch, but with the writer being a master of character development, he turned out to be really sincere and hilarious at times. Same for Ikjun, who apart from his enthusiastic and happy go lucky exterior, cares the most about the people around him. Although Seokhyeong seemed detached and introverted, he shows a emotional side to his friends as well as his mother. Songhwa is literally a girlboss though haha she’s smart, capable and gets along with everyone well. And she’s the most sane out of the bunch.

With all the main characters, we have the relationships. Junwan is the first to date seriously with Iksun (the dog or Micky? jkjk) who is Ikjun’s sister. When it first happened I was like not again Jung Kyung Ho (bc he dated his best friend’s sis in prison playbook too LMAO) I think their relationship was realistic and open. It also showed a more sensitive side to Junwan who would do anything for her. I especially liked how he said he didn’t need access to her phone because he trusted her. Yet as all couples do, they have their fair share of ups and downs. Like conflicts on getting married and a long distance relationship as Iksun moves overseas for graduate studies. I don’t really know how to take the ambiguous ending for these two, as Junwan receives the returned box (that has the ring he sent) I really hope nothing bad happens to these two though.

I’m sure we all love Wintergarden couple though, tbh they’re kinda my OTP at the moment 🤣 It was pretty much a ‘will they won’t they’ relationship with a relatively slow build. I think Gyeoul turned out to be one of my favourite characters. Shin Hyun Been did a good job at portraying her as a straightforward but innocent Resident, who is pretty much openly crushing on Jeongwon. The scenes they had together were adorably awkward (and the scene where he gives her chocopies omg) And when Jeongwon battles his inner conflict to become a priest, the final decision where they kiss was beautifully shot, with the actors both showcasing their emotions extremely well.

Then we have Chihong who pursues Songhwa, his professor. Midway through the drama, it is also shown that Ikjun and Songhwa might have had romantic feelings for each other. Songhwa ends up rejecting Chihong’s confession. In my opinion, Chihong was quite a interesting character but I didn’t really like him at the end. (I like the actor though) He did a real jerk move during drinking games, insisting on Ikjun to confess his feelings towards her even though he is already trying not to put Songhwa in an awkward spot. Although his character did end up making a cool exit and when I thought about his incredible story of soldier to doctor, I kinda regret disliking him that much. As for IkSong, In the final episode Ikjun confesses to her one last time, and we are left waiting for Songhwa’s reply. As much as I love this pairing, I don’t think that the ship will sail or maybe not as quickly as we think. I believe Songhwa would meticulously consider the sacrifices to their friendship or other aspects and might not be able to bring herself to it, but I hope it’s otherwise.

Lastly not forgetting Seokhyeong and Minha, another Professor+resident pairing. This one’s a bit ambiguous though, mainly because there hasn’t been much romantic development. To me, the most impactful scene came from Minha who had been irritated by continuous night shifts and was on the verge of a breakdown. She ended up remarkably saving a patient, starting off surgery on her own for the first time. Oh man Minha was such a lovable character, I remember feeling so bad for her but extremely proud of her for her accomplishment. Although Seokhyeong seemed a bit aloof and distant (which was intentional bc he’s an introvert) I think the backstory and all the hardships he faced with his family really made me feel for him. I hate to break it to you, but I’m not so sure if the ship will sail because of the phone call from his ex-wife and Minha’s somewhat rejected confession. But who knows, they might pull off a twist 👀

Apart from all these characters, there are more characters HHAHAH However, I think this is the killing point of ShinLee dramas. Unlike typical dramas which usually focuses on a main character and 2-3 side characters, they like to cast a diverse range of actors (especially those from theatre/musicals and lesser known drama/movie actors) while actually give their characters personality or a reason to be there. I’ve seen many dramas where extras or side characters were kind of irrelevant thus making me feel that they weren’t needed to build the storyline, yet ShinLee dramas hit different y’all. Every role, no matter how small, holds significance to the drama. It really seemed like a collaborative work that shows off every actors skills (and not forgetting staffs) and teamwork.

Anyways because there are way too many characters and too many scenes for me to mention them all, I’ll just talk about some honourable mentions heheh

1. Sunbin and Seokmin confession scene (ahh so cute)

I kinda sensed that they liked each other at the start but I didn’t know Seokmin would ask her out on a date at the end. Even though it’s kinda awkward that they are dating and working with each other though (both are in the same department) but hey the confession was cute and awkward and just warm and fuzzy 🥰

2. MAMA ROSA IS THE QUEENN

I think we all (would) love Mama Rosa because she’s a real one ☝️ (probably the coolest mother ever) She’s feisty, hilarious and kind to others. Plus her friendship with Ju Jong Su was just adorable and super wholesome. The scenes where they were supporting one another through tough times and hanging out with each other when they felt lonely always put a smile on my face. Oh and how Mama Rosa treated Gyeoul was extremely sweet. (as well as Seokhyeong’s mother) Despite her tough exterior, she’s a likeable character for being a strong but caring woman.

3. Just Do Jae Hak

I seriously love this guy so muchhh omg he’s so funny

Do Jae Hak has a funny amd clumsy personality, though it’s clear he’s been through a lot and is strong willed person. From admitting his indecisiveness to counselling Jun Wan on his love issues, there’s literally nothing to hate about him.

4. Uju and his dadd

The father and son chemistry between these two is so good omg. The scenes with these two are so adorable and heartwarming (not to mention hilarious) It’s amazing to see how Ikjun cares so much for Uju despite his hectic workdays while going through infidelity issues with his ex-wife. Uju is matured for his age and shows his love and appreciation for his dad too, making their interaction a great portrayal of a healthy family relationship💞

5. the food stealing the show🥘

Who doesn’t love food and when a show has great food scenes? Some of the best scenes are definitely when the 99s gather to eat. It really showcases each character’s personality with the tiniest details as well as highlight warm delicious meals. Just don’t watch this when you’re hungry at 2am in the morning guys you’ll be drooling all over your screens HAHAHA

Of course there are way more aspects, like Hongdo and Yoonbok, Ikjun and Iksun’s pigeon jokes and raps, or Jeongwon drunk crying in the chicken shop with his brother (who was his coach in Reply 1994 when he played Chilbong LOL)

Most importantly, I think it is the themes and messages that you get from the drama that really create such a lasting impression. Not only does it hit you in the feels with the hardships of hospital patients, or the hardworking doctors+nurses who are working long shifts saving lives, it also tackles topics of friendships through the possibilities of platonic and friends-to-lovers relationships. However I think the biggest lesson for me came from Seokhyeong, who learns to live his life doing what he want, with the people he treasures. Although the drama might seem slow at times (mainly because there isn’t really a main plot line/conflict occurring), but this drama would still bring you on a journey where you would laugh, cry and finish the series, begging for season 2 ✌🏻

The Proposal:

Okay so Kris and Woojin were vacationing in Iceland over their anniversary

And Woojin took her to this frozen lake at night to see the aurora

Kris was like “It’s so beautiful. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful in my life”

and Woojin was like “I have”

(looking at her obvs)

and then he dropped to his knee and did the whole thing

ya know “I love you, you’re the light of my life, I want to spend the rest of my life with you” and all that jazz

and Kris was kinda speechless for a second

and then she said “yea ily2″

(obviously)

and poof they were engaged!!

The Ring:

Okay now onto the actual wedding...

Season: Winter

Ceremony: In an atrium of a luxurious hotel in Alaska

Favorite Couple Photo: in the snow outside the hotel

The Wedding Party:

The bridesmaids ( @doublekn0t @s0ftminho @straycuties @scene-stealers @realstraykids @hwangs @hyyunjinn and myself) wear these sleeveless navy blue dresses

and the groomsmen (Chan, Minho, Changbin, Hyunjin, Jisung, Felix, Seungmin, and Jeongin) all wear gray suits with navy ties.

(it’s a lovely wedding party and hey everyone’s together isn’t that perfect XD)

Before we move on to all the interesting events, I gotta show y’all Woojin in his tux...

Okay now onto the fun stuff...

okay so the wedding ceremony itself was not super dramatic

like nothing went wrong bc nobody would mess with these fluffy bears

like the flower girl went the wrong way and Chan ended up with a basket on his head

but he and his date (Em ofc) just laughed it off and he helped the flower girl by throwing all the petals that were on him back onto the aisle

and ofc the typical Kris enters and Woojin smiles so brightly when he sees her

like “am I actually lucky enough to marry this beautiful girl”

and they exchange their vows and its beautiful

and they kiss and Jeungmin and Jeonglin pretend to be grossed out bc we’re fetuses

and Chan’s crying

and Em’s judging Chan for crying

And Minho’s just like “yea get it Woojin!!”

and Cici just lowkey scoots away from her dork of a bf

and Changbin's trying to hide his tears

but astrella hugs him and starts crying with him

and Hyunjin’s snapping a million photos with Maria helping him

tbh he’d probs rope her into using his polaroid camera to get some artsy polaroid as well as his professional-grade photos

and haz and felix are lowkey playing footsie the entire time

and then Jicolle are trying not to laugh bc they managed to get away with coloring a small strip of Woojin’s hair neon pink when he fell asleep

okay onto the reception

so everyone’s like eating and all that and it’s super cute like woojin’s feeding Kris

and then Changbin turns to Astrella and is like “why can’t we do that?”

and she shoves an entire loaf of bread in his face

and everyone’s laughing at Changstrella and joking around and Em and Chan are making sure the chillings only drink a little alcohol (except we all know how Em would actually be *ahem*)

so Chan would probs have to subtly switch Em over to mocktails

im kidding guys Em doesn’t have a drinking problem em pls don’t kill me lol

But yea everyone would just be having a blast and cooing over the newlyweds

Minho wouldn’t stop making honeymoon jokes

Cici would tell him he’d be sleeping on the couch that night if he doesn’t stop

tbh I’m probably just stuffing my face the entire time

who am I kidding I’d be so enveloped with Jeongin like I couldn’t stop paying attention to him

except ofc to be a supportive friend to ma girl Kris who just got hitched

so after dinner the music starts so ofc Hyunia is the first to go out there and bust some moves

and soon after comes Minci who starts grinding (cici I warned you i’d make him grind in this lmao sorry but also its funny so I dont regret it XD)

Hazlix are just dabbing and doing the shoot dance until Chem drag them from the dance floor and force some chamomile tea into them

where tf they got chamomile tea idek, tbh chan probs brought a bunch of teabags for that purpose

wow I've officially turned chan into a british grandma ok

aNYway, pretty soon everyone is on the dance floor

except Jeonglin bc I refuse to dance

until the cupid shuffle comes on

then everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is on the dance floor dancing along and Jisung and Nicolle are so hyped they go ham on the cupid shuffle

and end up causing a human domino effect

and the entire dance floor is on the ground

and they are too

but from laughing too hard

time for chem to give them a time out

so then Kroojin’s song comes on

(halo ofc, remember the info about the wedding from like a decade ago?)

and everyone parts and stands to watch as Kris and Woojin dance along to it, beaming at each other with so much love in their eyes

oof im soft

soon other peeps join in

even Jeungmin join in being all touchy-feely for one song, and they’re like cuddling up together until Chan whips out a ruler and shoves it between them

sorry this is turning into such a crack fic oml

but yea everyone is slow dancing and it’s all nice and sweet

and Minci is lowkey making out while dancing

I’m so sorry Cici I’m making you guys so wild lmao

so the song ends and the party gets crunk again

(And I go back to my seat and shove my face with chocolate mousse

and Jeongin’s never had chocolate mousse so I’m taunting him with mine

until he finally tricks me into giving him some

sorry I just gotta add Jeongin in here more bc I love him sm

so by the time the cake’s arrived everyone’s danced up an appetite

and Hazlix just stuff their faces with cake

and Jicolle teams up with Hazlix to steal the leftover wedding cake

(don’t ask me how but they pull it off)

and manage to frame Jeungmin

so Chem is furious at Jeungmin for the rest of the night

and Kroojin is clueless bc they’re just so in love

nobody get’s blackout drunk bc Chem is there to be moms (is that foreshadowing I see for the Chem wedding where they’re too busy/distracted to monitor the chillings??? O.o)

nahhhh it couldn’t be

so anyway the night ends too soon

bc Kroojin’s gotta hop on a plane to

SWITZERLAND!!

for skiing on the swiss alps and cuddling together by the fire with hot cocoa

and ofc they bring teddy bears

wow this was thick but if you’ve stuck it through this far first of all im impressed and secondly wtf are you doing with your life

jkjk ily for reading all of this tbh it was actually really fun! I love weddings too much lmao I got carried away while doing this it was originally gonna be like a short bulleted list about the fun stuff that went down with the nine muses and skiz during the reception but pinterest sucked me in

hello! current time check is 1:20AM.

yesterday was billy’s birthday so we decided to throw him a surprise mini party today at wcp. okay to be frank, i was a little against the location. mainly because by the time we’re doing the surprise it was gonna be really late and it was kinda inconvenient to get there as well but dayah said that he won’t want to meet unless it’s at wcp so we ended up doing the surprise at wcp anyway.

the best part was my boyfriend joined us! HAHAHAHA okok that probably isn’t the best part for everyone else but han joining us was the highlight of the day, or should i say night, for me la at least. i mean, we’re actually about 2 days away from seeing each other again but huhu i’ve missed him.

so the night before, i planned things with dayah and bavani was supposed to join us but apparently she decided to bail cus she didn’t wanna travel and waste money and shit lmao okay i’m sorry if you see this but honestly that isn’t even a good enough reason especially if you really see someone as your friend? wouldn’t you want to see them happy? joined in the celebration and stuff. like okay, i don’t know about you but if it’s within my means, i’d like to see my friends happy. maybe it sounds like i’m crazy defending billy or something but honestly, this is just my own opinion in general la, i hope no one takes it to heart or whatever. hashtag jangankecamsaya hahahahha! ok da cukup, so after that i told dayah it’s okay just go ahead with the same plan - which was to tell dayah that she has to go back to her aunt house at clementi and then ask billy to go home and change into comfortable clothes instead of their uniforms and then meeting billy at wcp after we set up everything. and instead of going to her aunt house, she met me of course and then we went to get the food for the mini celebration.

it was such a mess in between cus we thought there was pizza hut at clementi but apparently not? think they’ve changed it to another shop or something and at first i thought there’s no twelve cupcakes and i was about to get a cake at chateraise but fortunately, i told dayah to let’s walk around a bit more and i saw twelve cupcakes! so i decided to get the box of 3 all of which the same flavors - red velvet which is their signature flavor la haha also because the edible heart shape thingy is super cute huhu. and then from there we went back to chateraise and i ended up getting their mint ice cream, for me and dayah and also their thousand layer mille crepe called white zebra. afterwards, i did some googling and found out that there’s pizza hut at clementi ave 3 or something i can’t remember but after we walked there, we couldn’t see any pizza hut around so dayah asked this passerby and wtf ok lol the pizza hut closed down like 3 years ago or something lololol and then the man was like, “how long have you not been here already huh?” and we were like “we don’t stay here haha” and then we said our thanks and walked away. dayah was so ready to order delivery for the pizza hut thing but i googled again this time on the pizza hut website and found out that there’s one at 501 west coast or something. just nice the bus stop was right in front of us so we took the bus and head to that west coast place to get the pizza.

it wasn’t easy cus the place was super ulu and it was getting dark but thankfully dayah knows her way around so we got to the place super quick and made our order for their super variety box or something and because she was afraid it wasn’t gonna be enough, she ordered one of their personal pan pizza also. and then she forgot there’s aglio olio pasta inside and bought mee goreng from the indian shop at the coffee shop. i was also so tempted to get their combo set for their mutton chop but i decided not to cus we pretty much got a lot of food already. so i went to fairprice and bought some snacks and drinks. but because i couldn’t find any milk tea, i decided to get a cup at the coffee shop instead. it was goooood but too sweet for my liking. i still drank it anyway lmao.

and then after that, han texted me saying that he was already at the bus stop and i guess he was kinda disappointed cus he expected to see me there greeting him but we got so caught up buying the stuff that we lost track of time. we planned to reach there at 730 but ended up going over the stated time. i was still glad to see him anyway :) hehe i’m gonna greet him with a kiss everytime from now on. it’s been so long since i last see him wearing black that i almost forgot how good he looks in them. fucking panas i love it. ok stop it ahahahaha then, we walked towards wcp and it was so fucking crazy la hahaha so jauh gila but good small cardio walking workout since we’re gonna be eating fastfood.

billy was already on the way so dayah went to meet him and then bring him over. i wanted to set up the place and open the pizza box and shit but wtf la got this one bodoh spider thing crawl inside the plastic and then i got so scared i asked han to help me kill it HAHAHAHAHA oh and he said it’s a cricket not a spider?? whatever it is, i hate bugs :( oh and han stripped for awhile cus he was feeling really hot HAAHHAHAAH i love it pls feel hot more jkjk :p and i tried to take a photo cus he was like posing for me liddat but he FOUND OUTTTTT so i couldn’t get like a nice shot, unfortunately. and then we kissed a little hehe i loveeeeeeee :3 ok this part probably sounds really creepy or something to other people but i sat on han’s lap HAAHHA or thighs idk. but like it’s been so long since i last sat on his lap???? like seriously that was ages ago when we were still lepaking at the bawah block and during the earlier months of our relationship when han was at his peak of sweetness and romanticism hahahahahahaahah.

and then around 830 billy came!! we went to the jetty thing to hide before lighting up the one candle we got at the chateraise hehe. also yesssss i stole han’s lighter woohoo. technically i didn’t steal it la cus i made it clear to him that i’m gonna keep it hahahahahaha so like *shrugs* :p

the surprise was a success, and we ate and talked, cracked some lame jokes and pickup lines and shit ahahhahahahaahha. i guess everyone was super hungry at that point so we literally inhaled everything in like idk less than 20 minutes? i’m surprised han likes the aglio olio pasta but i think he was just super hungry so anything taste good to him.

I ALSO DID THE ABC PICK UP LINE ON HAN HAHAHAHAHAHA bodo la his reaction but it was funny hehehe i love it. i’m gonna go find more so i can make him cringe hhahahahahaha.

and then dayah’s mom called. so we decided to head back, besides it was getting so late already. and while we were walking, billy saw a cab so he flagged for it and han boarded the cab with billy since they were gonna head back the same way anyway whereas me and dayah had to walk a little bit further down to take the bus back. but it was okay, the ride back home was long but it was nice with someone for company.

oh and then i asked dayah if she wanted to stop at the bus stop in front of ubi and she was like okay! so we stopped there and walked back. we were walking towards home until i asked her if i should go get something from macs hahahah but i decided against it and went to giant to get some groceries for my brunch tomorrow. there was a good deal for the bbq steak which was going for 9.90 for 2 so i got that, a canned of tuna mayo and some ham. my dad already got bread and cheese earlier on today so tomorrow’s brunch is gonna be litttttt. i’ll either have a slab of steak or have a tuna and ham with cheese sandwich tomorrow. so excited hehe

did i also mention that han, for the first time in a long time actually has a place he wanna go to this coming sat???? so exciting!!! :D oh and i sent han a little slutty pic of headless me lol. ok it’s not a little slutty. i think it’s VERY cus i literally stepped out of my comfort zone to take pics like that hahahahah i actually have a few more but i deleted them all cus it’s crazy racy lmao.
