Literally the only reason why I haven’t drawn this man more is that I’ve been trying to figure out how exactly I wanna go about it, which is kinda hard considering that not even canon material does it consistently.

Master Kohga Age of Calamity Trailer Analysis
I’m a speedy boi time for some thoughts on today’s new trailer
Tumblr media
Ok first off THIS SHOT. Very important. Look at the Sheikah Slate filter. Last trailer I was able to write it off as some thematic choice since Robbie and Purah were Ancient Sheikah Scientists, but THIS trailer does not have that same connection. Couple this with this screenshot [credit to @rachelsmusicallife thanks for pointing this out to me!]
Tumblr media
I’m under the impression that these cutscenes might be part of an overarching theme of reliving memories through the Sheikah Slate. Kinda fleshed out out theory on how this might be related to eggbot here.
Tumblr media
“Hehehehe... Look. What. You. Did...”
The camera motion here is handheld (yes I know it’s not literally handheld but it has that feel) with Master Kohga here literally holding the camera. I’m assuming because this scene is from the direct POV of another character, perhaps Link. Which would make sense, since he is apparently accusing us of doing something. The lighting is also super weird, we’re in the Yiga Hideout (the area with the large pit where we fight Kohga in botw) but the sun is just setting with a shroud on the area. Although, I can’t exactly place the time of day because I’ve been through the hideout my fair share and no time of the day really lines up with this scene (because of the snowy Gerudo Highlands in the background, so the glistening of the sun is different)
Tumblr media
This is by the Great Plateau. I’m thinking near the Outpost Ruins considering this isn’t Gatepost Town since they Great Plateau’s entrance is not in view. In fact, I could probably specifically place this right....HERE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flag poles, juts in the Plateau walls, road directly perpendicular to the Plateau. If my three years of staring at the Botw world is correct, [please Nintendo it’s the only thing I’m good at] then I’d say they’re at the Outpost Ruins. The only thing is that the houses seen here are mainly wood, while the ruins have clear stone walls
Tumblr media
Well...I don’t mind.
This is not Master Kohga. Different voice actor, new character design, new villain! I’m assuming he’s some sort of second in command or captain, given he duel wields Windcleavers. Also not how he doesn’t have a scar on his mask in this scene
Further note, look at that chimney!!! I love that chimney, I haven’t seen that chimney before... it’s in a style that I can only really place in Castle Town, but the location is clearly not there, so best assumption is that this is another prominent Hylian Village. The Hateno style archway at the bottom right seems to support so. The house shingles definitely mean this isn’t an outpost or military ruin...[this weekend I’d love to hope into the game myself and place it exactly] the background cliffs mean this isn’t Gatepost Town either. The rock formations look like a turn by Scout’s Hill, of the western breach by the Outskirts Stable...I wouldn’t put the Rauru Settlements out of the question either. All in all, I’m hesitant to connect this scene with the other scene because one clearly has a dirt path, and the other a stony road. Plus the house shingles are different
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok I can pretty much place this scene exactly. At least the bottom one, the top one is a separate scene that doesn’t flow into the other one (you can just tell by the framing and continuity)
Tumblr media
You can see the Great Plateau entrance, the line of sight is at an angle, placing this backflipping Yiga man somewhere here. Only inconsistency would be the trees, but perhaps it’s just grown over after a hundred years, you can even see a building in the middle of this forest in center left of the map.
Link is chasing Backflip Benny over here through to the exit of town, (you can see the town entrance/exit archway on the bottom right, similar to the one seen in the chimney pic) AND you can see that Backflip Benny also has a fresh cut on his mask, presumable gained after fighting Link, which is why he teleports away at the end.
Tumblr media
So that places these two shots definitely after whatever conversation happened on the roof. Yay for timelines!
Tumblr media
The stupendous Chief of the Yiga Clan! Master Kohga!
This takes place at some ruins of some sort. The rocks on the top right actually look Edlin or Akkala, but that might just be the lighting. The stony slabs and etches actually remind be of Zonai, but that doesn’t really seem right...I’ve never seen those designs before I don’t think...you can see from the way the stone slabs are angled that they lead to a circular pattern. It could be the circular pit at the Yiga Hideout, but that area is just sand, not stone. The smooth, plain style of these ruins is actually more in line with Gerudo Ruins so that might actually be the case; we know the Yiga have a history of taking Gerudo Ruins as their own (The Yiga Hideout is canonically an old Gerudo architectural dig)
I’ll also note that this scene has the same lighting as the first shot, and the last two shots which we’ll see later.
Tumblr media
*maniacal laughter* Oo? TWO new characters I see???? O?????
This is definitely the Yiga hideout, you can tell from the wall design, plus the lanterns, and the general comfort of Master Kohga and Backflip Benny in the background. But, elephant in the room...who are YOU dear sir?
Tumblr media
I’ll talk more about them later, but just keep that Calamity glowing thing in their hand in mind for later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s gonna kill you all...to DEATH!
This is Master Kohga speaking again, if you couldn’t tell from his....very dramatic and in character dialogue. Maybe this game will actually make me like him now alsdfkjsdlk
Obvious is obvious, this is the Yiga Hideout again, similar lighting to the first opening shot, I’m thinking this might be sometimes before it though, considering he has his minions around. Maybe Link fights off the goons, which prompts him to ask “Look what you did” but we can’t know for sure.
Also there’s grass? So maybe that other shot isn’t the hideout. Also a spotlight???!? Jazz hands?!?!? Leave it to Kohga to defy the fourth wall huh.
Also I haven’t mentioned this yet but NEW MUSIC it’s so good aughghug I can’t wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And...we end on another Sheikah Slate fade out on this mysterious new character. Eyeliner says: Avatar Kyoshi
Ok but seriously I have THOUGHTS!! So firstly, they’re obviously working with the Yiga Clan, perhaps they’re the reason why the Yiga are in the Gerudo to begin with considering they have the Gerudo symbol on their cape. [Cause am I the only one that thought it was weird that the disgraced Sheikah people are living in Gerudo, and not like...closer to Kakariko, or their suposedl arch nemesis of the Royal Hylian family?] Also note that this scene most definitly takes place in the Lost Woods. Perhaps they need something with the Master Sword...or are ambushing someone...hmm..
Based on that rock formation in the background I’m thinking somewhere in one of these three general areas but I really need to just pick up my switch sometimes soon and find it exact...so bare with me it’s only from memory but I’m pretty sure of myself when it comes to locations
Tumblr media
My money’s on this being the true mastermind and antagonist, notice how their eye circlet is the same of that of the Calamity goop eye
Tumblr media
This person has...yellow? Brown? Hazel eyes? And light hair with a braid? I don’t think they’re Sheikah, but definetly not Gerudo either. So that leaves them to be some Hylian. A Hylian with an evil Ancient Core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[It’s definitly some form of Giant Ancient Core. But there’s runes on the side of it that I have yet to translate]
Thinking on their idenity for another second, you’ll notice that they wear a black robe, but their cape with the Gerudo crest is actually torn and tattered. So, perhaps they were disgraced? A runaway? Or perhaps it’s a disguise, perhaps a spy playing both roles on either side of the war?
There’s an old theory that the fortune teller who initally told King Rhoam of the prophecy was actually part of the Yiga Clan. Seeing as, their actions led the King to dig up the Guardians, and cement the deaths of thousands of people. So, putting points in order here
Evil Magic dude
Works for the Yiga
Has connected to people in power
Has an evil Ancient Core
Could it be that this mastermind fully knew that the Guardians would eventually be corrupted? Could they be the “fortune teller” that encouraged the King to excavate the Sheikah Technology? Sheikah Technology, that would be an insult to the Yiga Clan considering their people were banished for creating them in the first place? Hmmm....
Final NOTE! Remember that one scene in the other HWAOC trailer with Zelda holding a mysterious object?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm...Sheikah Scientists, weird egg robot, and now an evil Ancient Core...you may also remember Daruk mentioning in dialogue that something was wrong with Rudania...and cutscenes from Urbosa and Revali might point to the Yiga being close to the Divine Beasts...lots to chew on. I’m thinking the plot of this game will heaviliy revolve on the idea that there was some sort of plan that led to Ganon corrupting the Guardians and Divine Beasts, but we’ll see!

The Mummy Returns for PS2 is not good and you should play it
Being bisexual, I naturally love the first two Mummy films starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Being a kid who spent too much time playing videogames in the 90′s and 00′s, I also remember seeing previews for a tie-in game to The Mummy Returns and always finding it intruiging. The ability to play as Rick and Imhotep, blending gunplay and magic? Sold! Except I was a poor teenager and didn’t have, y’know, money. Now I do. As the title of this piece may have tipped you off, this is a bad game. A game that 14 year old me would have tried and utterly failed to love. But with age comes wisdom, the ability to laugh more freely at the things you love, and the ability to buy The Mummy Returns for PS2 for £1 instead of however much second hand retailers wanted for it back in the halcyon days of the mid 2000′s. I started my first playthrough is Imhotep, which is the better choice if you’re looking for a game that is “fun”, or “passable”. You know you’re in for a good time when the first thing you’re told to do after being revived is set out on a fetch quest. Exploring Imhotep’s first level, the British Museum, you’re tasked with finding four items to give as offerings to the god statues you’re sharing a basement with, as well as being told to look out for collectible Canopic jars that will expand your health meter. So you run around, punching out security guards and Medjay as you go. The melee combat here doesn’t feel precise or impactful or, y’know, good, but enemies have the decency to die pretty quickly, and you awaken with the magical power to restore your health by absorbing the souls of weakened humans through a technique I insist on referring to as “soulvore”. This level shows some promise. The environment isn’t huge, and the game doesn’t look great, but there’s a decent amount of unique assets and the level is easily navigable. This is largely the case for Imhotep’s story. While you can gain a new spell on each level, anything that isn’t soulvore is basically never useful outside of the two times you’re forced to use the resurrection spell in the museum. Instead you’ll just punch dudes a lot and maybe use a sword? Idk it’s your afterlife. Oh, Imhotep’s third level is hilarious by the way. Remember that temple he stops off at with Alex and his henchfolk? Yeah, you turn up there, pick up a “spirit sword” from a corpse, kill a couple of ghosts and that’s it, you win the level. Rick, on the other hand, has a much worse game, but a much funnier one. Rick O’Connell has no magical soulvore. Rick O’Connell lives in a vore-free zone. Instead, he relies on good old-fashioned firearms to get the job done. Each level gives Rick dual pistols and either a shotgun or tommy gun, plus a starting pool of ammo. As for health, you’ll be forced to find and ration out the limited health packs in each level. However, Rick’s enemies are so spongey that a regular dude will take eight pistol shots to kill. Your starting pistol ammo is 32. And Rick’s punches may as well be gentle subtweets for all the good they do. Rick’s limited abilities to stay alive and defend himself aren’t the only thing that make the levels more tricky than Imhotep’s, but we’ll get to that. From the first cutscene, you’re in for a treat. Evy, Rick, and Jonathan all suffer from some pretty terrible voice acting and honestly it’s the only thing worth playing Rick’s story for. His first level is that temple from the beginning where he, Evy and Alex find the magic bracelet, where you’re tasked with...finding four items to open a door! Luckily, ammo and health are pretty plentiful in this level, even if you’re like me and don’t discover that you can loot the corpses of gunwielders until the third level. The only real problems here is the confusing maze that two of the trinkets you need are found in and the unmotivated shooting of brown people. But then we start getting onto the rest of the game’s levels, the ones Rick shares with Imhotep. When Imhotep goes to Cairo, all he has to do is find the hotel room the heroes are staying in, then go down to the train station and fight Ardeth a bit. Sure, the place is a confusing maze, but you’re unlikely to die. When Rick goes there, you have to bribe your way past the guards at the docks to reach the train station. They will only accept 5 golden coins. So maybe you have to do some platforming for them, or even a series of tedious fetch quests? Nope, you have to kill random, otherwise peaceful brown people. Specifically, you have to kill the armed men walking around town, who might drop a gold coin if you’re lucky, but will mostly just drain your ammo.  After this, you (somehow) find your way back to the docks and see Alex giving Anck Su Namun the Benny Hill treatment before you teleport back to the hotel so Ardeth can go with you to free Alex. This is more difficult than it sounds, as the wandering townsfolk have been replaced by zombies that don’t drop ammo, and can do some nasty damage if they latch onto you. You then follow this up with a gauntlet of cultists at the docks/train station. Really though, so long as you’re careful and save/reload often enough to avoid catastrophe, this level is just tedious. Rick’s trip to the jungle is where things get real fucky. This is another two parter. The first half is essentially identical to Imhotep’s, with Rick doing some basic platforming and light puzzle solving while trying to avoid the wildlife, except you get a slightly different path to the level exit! Huzzah! But the treetops...oh the treetops. You may remember the army of mummified pygmies from the movies. When Imhotep passes through here, they’re fighting Medjay that 1) distract them 2) let you soulvore back any lost health. When Rick comes through here, there’s no cultists for the pygmies to fight, meaning you get the full brunt of their attacks. I assume the final level and fight against the Scorpion King is the same for both of them, I stopped playing after running across a rope bridge cost my half my health bar in unstoppable damage. It’s not all awful though, and I do think this game had potential. Imhotep’s kinda fun to play is, even if his useless magic reduces him to a repetitive punch machine. There are some neat touches, like Imhotep withering as he gets hurt, or Rick’s two pistols actually being visibly stored on his model. Oh, and the cats in Cairo will actually drain Imhotep’s health if he’s around them. Graphical fidelity and audio quality aside, this game would be pretty disappointing even as a PS1 title. But its bad voice acting, janky animations, and amatuerish level design can make for some “so bad it’s good times”. I definitely got my quid’s worth out of it. This seems to have been exactly the sort of d-tier entry the developer, Blitz Games, specialised in. Their other titles include Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue, a videogame adaptation of Reservoir Dogs, infamous Burger King advergame Sneak King, Bratz:The Movie (the videogame), and The Fairly OddParents: Breakin' da Rules . These games are all noted to have “mixed reception”.

HAPPY NEW YEAR gaming update!
I hope 2017 brings you lots of joy this year, especially given what a rotter 2016 was! I’m afraid I’ve the updates go a bit (oops), so let’s get into this!
I’ve been enjoying FFXV, a little bit to my surprise! it’s definitely because it’s clearly a more Western-style game. this isn’t a revelatory observation, but it feels to me like a mix of FFXIV, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. not a bad thing at all, in my opinion! I’ve unfortunately had to put it down because the receiver for my surround sound system is being a butt, and plugging my PS4 directly into my TV makes for very disorienting viewing. it’ll be going to GeekSquad soon.
instead, I played Tyranny on PC - a game I’d been looking forward to since not long before its launch! I’m happy to say that it’s as good as it looked, and I was obsessed with it thru my entire first playthru! I’m on the second now - trying to make different decisions for a bit of achievement farming - and my only complaint is how little music there is. there are only about 4? maybe 5? songs in the game, and they get tired very fast. the game also feels too short (only about 30hrs) but I also acknowledge that those hours are VERY dense with content! I guess I’m spoiled by DA:I. :P
I recorded about ten OR MORE videos of Tyranny to finally getting going on my ‘tube channel...but thru the first recording of the character creation, I didn’t notice the mic wasn’t on. the second, I didn’t notice that I had the recording FPS and etc. on very low settings from when I was trying to livestream Portal for my dad. the THIRD recording was a success...until I played it back, after already recording that horde of videos, to discover that my voice is almost completely inaudible under the game’s audio. so that was 10 videos in the trash. le sob.
needing an RPG I’m less immediately familiar with, I started up another game that I bought on Steam’s winter sale - Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition! It’s fun, tho frustrating at times...getting around is slow, and - like Tyranny - little music to sample. some, I’m sure, enjoy that the game doesn’t hold your hand thru every quest progression, but I’m not that player. I want to make my way thru quests as quickly as possible, or at least give me SOME hint as to where to start and how to puzzle together what I need to do next.
Oh...Sir! is as hysterical as it seemed (I avoided LPs of it so that I could discover its brilliance for myself), but it’s not something I’m inclined to sit down with for long periods of time. the devs realize this, I think, with their “It Gets Boring After an Hour” achievement...
with my renewed passion for RPGs, I should try picking up Witcher 3 again... however, it’s been nearly a year and a half since I last played it, and I’ll be lucky if I can fumble thru remembering how to play and not get myself killed. there’s no way I’d start a new file, either: Steam tells me that I already sunk 90hrs into the damn thing.
seeing so much renewed love for Skyrim has, admittedly, brought back my interest in playing it as well...tho not the remastered. you gasp at me in confusion! think of it this way: I don’t want a second set of trophies on PS4 (or PC) when I have so many yet unlocked on PS3.
(plus, I spent WAY too much on the Steam winter sale... don’t need to spend more...)
finally, I’m still whittling away at Fire Emblem Fates! I’m nearing the end of Revelation, and am unlocking the possibility of S rank with all characters! unfortunately, I didn’t trigger the action in Chapter 14 to get Benny and Charlotte, and I’m now heading into...21...BUT HEY! less support grinding for me to do!
the reason I’m grinding everyone to possible S rank is because viewing it, then restarting the game without saving, will still open up the cutscene in the Records Hall. (...okay, so I’m slightly a completionist with this.) THEN I need to figure out who I ACTUALLY want to pair everyone up with... and THEN the kids come along, and I have to support grind THEM... oi
