y’all i dont think Tessa actually meant to “protect” Mina from Kit. i think that Kit honestly misread the situation. we have to remember that all of these letters are a first person account and thus an unreliable source of information. reading through Kits letter you can clearly see how much he’s struggling with his self worth and just struggling in general.

the Tessa and Jem we know and love would never make Kit feel that way on purpose. I’d say that Tessa was more blocking Mina’s view of the gun than protecting her, and that she would have stood in front of Kit as well had someone else brought it into the room. Jem didn’t quite say the right thing in response, but again we have to remember that Kit has never told them the whole story or his feelings on certain topics. i know we all joke about how Jem always knows the right thing to say but it’s hard to give good advice when you don’t have all of the information. going back to Tessa’s letter from the beginning of SoBH and Jem’s pov from GotSM they clearly love Kit and see him as their son. if they knew how they made him feel in his letter they would have reassured him of their love and his place in their family in an instant.
