DUBAI, March 12 (Reuters) - Sudan's army said it had taken control of the state broadcast headquarters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday in what would be its most significant advance against its paramilitary rival in nearly 11 months of war.

The broadcast building lies in Omdurman, a city across the River Nile from Khartoum that forms part of Sudan's wider capital and has seen heavy fighting around military bases, bridges and supply routes.

Battles have continued despite a call by the United Nations Security Council for a truce to allow desperately needed humanitarian aid into Sudan during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday.

The truce call was welcomed by the RSF but rejected by a senior general in the army, which has claimed some recent gains in Omdurman after being on the back foot militarily through much of the war.

The capture of the state broadcast building would extend its control from the north across "old Omdurman", though the RSF retains southern and western areas of the city.

Witnesses say the army, which has depended on air power and heavy artillery to try to counter the RSF's infantry advantage, has deployed drones in Omdurman to regain ground.

There was no immediate comment from the RSF.

The RSF seized the state broadcast building as fighting broke out in mid-April 2023, and used it along with other public facilities for military operations.

National TV and radio have been broadcasting from Port Sudan, the Red Sea coastal city from which officials aligned with the army have operated since the RSF occupied large swathes of the capital early in the war.

'VOICE OF THE NATION'

A video posted by the army on Tuesday, the location of which was verified by Reuters, showed some of its troops within a kilometre of the radio and TV building cheering after they had seized vehicles and weapons.

On social media, supporters of the army cheered what they called the liberation of the "voice of the nation".

"Today the army achieved a great victory, but what's important is to get back security, health services and education," said Safaa Ali, a 39-year old government employee from Omdurman who fled to Port Sudan in May.

"Our question is who will compensate us for the loss of all their property that was looted and their homes that were destroyed by this war," she told Reuters by phone.

War between Sudan's army and the RSF erupted in mid-April 2023 amid dispute over a plan for transition to civilian rule.

The two factions had staged a coup in 2021 that derailed a previous transition following the 2019 overthrow of autocratic former leader Omar al-Bashir, before falling out.

The war has devastated the capital, led to waves of ethnically driven killings in the western region of Darfur and created the world's biggest displacement crisis.

More than 8 million people have fled their homes and hunger is rising.

The conflict has also drawn in regional powers. Analysts say the United Arab Emirates has backed the RSF, while Egypt, Eritrea and Iran are aligned with the army.

‼️Please Read. After a discussion with my Cousin we decided to start up a pilot Soup kitchen in Al Hitana Omdurman serving lentil stew fortified with peanut butter to double the available calories in the stew as well as bread.

The kitchen has been running for 3 days now and has served on average 80 people a day, representing 80 households so potentially we’ve been helping 400 people a day.

Over 90% of those who have shown up to the kitchen over the past 3 days have been women and Children and for some it will be the only meal they get that day.

From tomorrow we’d like to scale up to making two 65 litre pots of stew a day which is 160 servings (households).

Currently we’ve purchased enough supplies to run the kitchen at full capacity for two weeks but we’d like to make this a permanent thing and that needs external support.

At least 18 people have been killed in the Sudanese city of Omdurman as the war between the national army chief and his former deputy continues.

Dozens of people were also injured when the army shelled three neighbourhoods in the city, which lies next to the capital, Khartoum, residents said.

After more than 100 days of war, the bombardments added to a toll of at least 3,900 killed nationwide. The war between the army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his rival Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, began on 15 April and has uprooted more than 3.3 million people from their homes.

Musa Hassan, whose aunt died in the Omdurman attack, said: “I just saw people fleeing right after the explosions hit the area. When you ask them where are you going, they say we don’t know but we are leaving, they were completely shocked. So many families have fled the area since last night.”

Mohamed Mansour, who lives in Omdurman, told AFP he had helped to pull eight bodies from the rubble of homes destroyed by the blasts. Another resident, Hagar Youssef, said: “Four people were killed in the house next door, including two children.”

The incident came after Gen Yasir al-Atta, the assistant commander-in-chief of the Sudan Armed Forces, announced his forces would be using “the most deadly force that the leader of the army would allow them to”.

The World Health Organization warned on Tuesday of the “catastrophic humanitarian crisis” facing Sudan, “with more than 67% of the country’s hospitals out of service”.

Healthcare and aid facilities have themselves frequently come under attack or been looted by both forces. Fighters have also been accused of sexual violence, reports that the WHO said it was “appalled by”.

Alleged sexual and gender-based crimes are a focus of a new investigation announced earlier this month by the international criminal court into alleged war crimes in Sudan.

Although there is no sign an end to the war is near, attempts at forging peace have taken place. The Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), Sudan’s main civilian bloc, attended a two-day civilian meeting, which began on Monday in Cairo and sought to “restore the path of peace and stop the war in Sudan”, according to the FFC spokesperson, Jaafar Hassan.

The FFC was ousted from power in a 2021 coup orchestrated by Burhan and Dagalo, which derailed the country’s transition to democracy. The two generals later fell out in a feud that exploded into war.

US- and Saudi-brokered ceasefires were systematically violated, before Washington and Riyadh adjourned talks.

A quartet from east African regional bloc IGAD has also sought to mediate, but with little success.
