I’m a little bit obsessed with damselfly nymphs which I. Didn’t take any pictures of on Friday but here’s some bugs from this Friday.
Dragonfly nymphs I caught infinitely while hunting for beetle larvae… why are they so cute. Their eyes are so. I love them when you catch them they just skitter into a position and freeze then start trying to hide again
Gerridae which I wanted because my last one is preserved Mid-Bite by a dytiscid larvae so this one’s nice for studying. I’m a big fan of how the local ones look fancy because they’re black and white like they’re in a suit
And then infinite belostomatids I couldn’t avoid catching who bit the shit out of me while I tried to release them
Bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs thered bugs in the water and I love them

If my boyfriend were a bug I think he' be a Common Blue Damselfly- and he think I'd be the grub of a Western Hercules Beetle!
Thus, I decided to draw us as them!

The king of the midsummer pond, Libellula pulchella, the Twelve-spotted Skimmer. True to their specific epithet (pulchella = beautiful little), they're one of the most gorgeous northeastern dragonflies.
This guy was perched on a dead tree next to a small pool, making sure the other male skimmers (Libellula cyanea and Libellula semifasciata) didn't get too close to his territory
Sometimes the white spots on their wings, as well as the pruinosity on their abdomen, will even reflect slightly blue

Bug of the Day
I always feel special when I find an Odonate at night. This damselfly came to a moth sheet back in July. Not sure what it is yet beyond something in the Coenagrionidae family.
Update: It's a sedge sprite!

the sexual dimorphism of dragonflies is always interesting! the male Scarlet Percher above is feiry red all over, while his female counterpart below is a subdued brown, with a subtle scarlet gradient on her abdomen.

(bottom) Scarlet Percher, female (Diplacodes haematodes).

Eastern Forktail damselflies, Ischnura verticalis! I was surprised to learn these were the same species - the blue one is a mature adult, the orange one is an immature female. Seen in central Illinois on May 18th, 2024.
