❝ Catie Greer had lived her whole life knowing that there were monsters in Forks. From the time she was old enough to understand such things, her mothers had been telling her about the shape-shifters living on the local reserve, men who were able to temporarily abandon their human forms and run wild as large, howling wolves. Though she had never met one of these shape-shifters herself, knowing that the supernatural gene was only triggered when the shifter first caught the scent of an approaching vampire, Catie had been observing the teenage boys on the reserve for a while now (maybe especially Seth Clearwater, but nobody needed to know about that), but when the Cullen family returned to Forks after being away for decades, the Greer family had pegged them as blood-drinkers instantly and knew that it was only a matter of time before the shifter genes in the local boys began to activate.

One might question how Catie and her family would be privy to all of this knowledge, given that they were neither vampires nor shape-shifters. The answer to that query was simple: the Greer family were witches, the magical lineage on both of her mothers’ sides going back a collective four centuries. Magic flowed through their veins right along with blood, it sparked at their fingertips and filled their lungs and released itself into the air along with their breath, manifesting in mystical spells and potions brewed by moonlight, filling the air with fumes of pure power and magnificence.

Catie and her mothers were forced to keep their magic a secret, however, because there were simply not that many witches left in the world. After a horrible war that had raged with the powerful Volturi vampires several centuries ago, the majority of the Greers’ kind had been slaughtered, leaving less than twenty prominent witch families left in the world. That was the reason that the first lesson Catie had learned as a child was how to keep her magic hidden, especially once the Cullens had returned to town; the remaining witches may have brokered a fragile peace treaty with the Volturi long ago, but they could not afford to reveal themselves in a town where other supernatural beings resided, on the chance that there might be a vampire or a shape-shifter with a grudge against those who could wield magic.

And then Bella Swan moves to Forks. The girl is plain, awkward, clumsy, and has something slightly supernatural about her - something that Catie can sense but not quite put her finger on. But to make matters worse, Edward Cullen, decidedly the broodiest member of the local vampire coven, takes an intense interest in the new girl, ramping up the supernatural activity in Forks and threatening to expose the Greer family’s mystical little secret.

Suffice it to say, Catie is not exactly happy with Bella for inadvertently causing all of this. Still, though, she seems sweet enough and is completely in over her head, and so the young witch takes it upon herself to try and help Bella navigate the new world she’s found herself in, while still doing her best not to expose her own supernatural status.

A task that, given the new vampiric danger making its way towards her hometown and her growing feelings for a certain stupid, aggravatingly cute shape-shifter, is proving to be a hell of a lot harder than Catie had ever anticipated. ❞

If they're a light or heavy sleeper: Catie is a very heavy sleeper - her moms always joke that she could probably sleep through the end of the world.

What they would do if they won the lottery right now: Put some away for college first, then spend the rest to boy her moms a better house and help the shapeshifters spruce up some things around the reservation.

If they have a special item that they couldn't bear to lose: A charm bracelet, literally charmed to tingle against her skin if anyone bearing her ill will approaches, that one of her moms gave her for her twelfth birthday. It always makes her feel safe, having that promise of protection with her, and she couldn't stand it if she ever lost the old thing.

One negative personality trait of theirs: Her incredible stubbornness. Not only does it often annoy the people around her, but it's also gotten her into a lot of trouble over the years.

Their favorite 70s song: "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

The color(s) associated with their zodiac: White (Cancer).

Their favorite comedy movie: Bridesmaids.

About one person they've lost: Catie has actually been fortunate enough not to lose anyone in her life yet.

A quote I associate with them: "My mom likes to tell me 'you have to pick your battles'. Well, I'm full of rage and I'm picking all of them."

If they're a lover or a fighter: Decidedly a fighter. In a tense situation, Catie is much more likely to punch or hex her way out of it than try to talk her way out.

Their first ever halloween costume: Her moms dressed her up in a little angel costume when she was still a baby, and she looked adorable held in her mother's arms while the two women handed out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Their favorite 2010s song: "Ain't It Fun" by Paramore.

Their favorite kind of weather: Stormy and rainy, with the sky absolutely pouring water down - it makes her feel connected to nature, which is very important for witches.

What extracurriculars they did in school: None, she isn’t really an organized sports or clubs type of person.

Their favorite word: Translucent.

About their first kiss: It was with a boy from her class named Jason, in eighth grade, because of a game of Spin the Bottle at another girl’s birthday party. It was awkward and had too much teeth, Jason’s glasses got caught in Catie’s hair when she tried to pull away, and she was very glad two years later when Jason’s family moved out of Forks, because now she didn’t have to deal with that awkward reminder anymore.

What kind of posters they had in their room as a kid: A few band posters, including Destiny’s Child and Green Day, along with one of those ridiculous posters with silly illustrations and a goofy motivational phrase that one of her moms got her and that she only put up to be polite, but kept forgetting to take down. (She finally got around to it on her fifteenth birthday.)

If they have a lucky object (and what it is): She does not have one.

Their saddest injury: Getting hit by Jane’s pain ability during the battle over Renesmee while trying to help the shapeshifters; she doesn’t suffer any actual physical damage aside from a nosebleed, but it’s the worst pain she’s ever felt in her life.

Their most heroic moment: Jumping on top of one of the Volturi and punching her in the face, no magic to protect her, in order to keep her from hurting Seth during the battle over Renesmee.

A superstition they believe in (if they do believe in them): Technically she believes in a lot of superstitions, because most of them are true due to latent magic in the earth or in humans.

Their favorite 2000s song: “Miss Independent” by Kelly Clarkson.

Their first pet: A plump brown tabby cat named Hathaway that her moms had had before she was even born; he’s since passed away, but she still loves and misses him.

Their favorite video game: She doesn’t really play video games, but she’ll never say no to a competitive round of Just Dance.

Their lowest moment: Accidentally lashing out with magic during an argument with the shapeshifters over Bella’s pregnancy and hitting Leah with a spell. She didn’t mean to, but she will never forget how hurt Seth looked that she’d hurt his sister, and she’s always tried to be more careful with her magic when she’s feeling strong emotions since then.

Their crime against humanity (whether that's an actual crime or something cringeworthy/embarrassing they've done): Always putting the milk back in the fridge when there’s only a dribble left in it; both her moms and Seth have tried to train her out of this, but it hasn’t worked so far.

Their middle name: She doesn’t have one; it’s a tradition among the witches in her family not to give their daughters middle names.

If they have sloppy or neat handwriting: It’s legible, but Catie also usually writes fast, so it’s usually slanted and not exactly neat.

Their biggest talent: Healing spells; for someone who’s generally combative, she’s very good at fixing other people’s wounds.

The meaning of their name: Her full first name is Hecate, after the Greek goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, and ghosts. In Greek, the name means far away.

Something they've never told anyone: She has a short video of Seth laughing at one of her jokes on her phone, that she took when he wasn’t looking, and that she sometimes watches when she can’t sleep.

Their best friend: Seth; it might be a cop-out to say her boyfriend is her best friend, but it’s true.

Their favourite trip (if they've ever been on one): The trip to Disney her moms took her on when she was nine; they stayed for a week, went to all the parks, and during the Magic Kingdom fireworks, one of her moms performed a spell that turned one of the fireworks into the shape of a C just for her.

What they would name their future child: Amelia for a girl, Stephen for a boy.

Their favourite season: Spring; the time of nature’s rebirth is when a witch’s magic is at its most powerful, and she loves feeling that strength.

Her actual legal name is Hecate, after the Greek goddess of witchcraft, but she hates being called that.

Her absolute favorite movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Her moms are constantly playing Fleetwood Mac around the house, and she’s grown to hate it from having to hear it her whole life.

She bites her nails a lot, which has lead to her almost constantly having them painted, because she worries about swallowing nail polish flakes when she bites them that way.

She first came out to her mothers as pansexual when she was twelve years old, and they threw a full-on party to celebrate their daughter realizing her identity.

Catie once broke her leg after jumping off the back of her house’s roof to try out a levitating spell one of her mom’s had recently explained to her. Obviously, it did not turn out very well.

She also tried to conjure her own dæmon at the age of eleven after reading the His Dark Materials series. Instead, the wound up creating a sort of deformed bat-creature, which she named Stoker and kept until it died two months later.

She really loves true crime TV shows in the vein of Forensic Files and Very Scary People, and they’re her go-tos on rainy summer days and weekends when there’s nothing else to do.

Catie is a voracious reader, and has always had a habit of reading above her level. For instance, she had read (and understood) the entirety of her family’s grimoire by the time she was nine, and being as the grimoire is over a hundred years old, there are some fairly complex words in there.

She doesn’t have a middle name; it’s a sort of tradition among the witches in her family not to give their daughters one.

Their berserk button: People who just assume that people who haven’t gone to college are either poor or somehow less intelligent or both; both of Catie’s moms chose not to go to college because they didn’t think it was for them, and even beyond that, no one has the right to look down on people who want to go to college but can’t afford it, so people doing that sets Catie right off.

Why their name was chosen: Catie was named after Hecate, the Greek goddess of witchcraft, and Helena, her mother who carried her, chose it as a not-quite-subtle homage to their magical roots - just because their family had to hide their magic from the whole town, Helena reasoned, didn’t mean her daughter couldn’t have a name that would always remind her of who she was.

Their favorite 2020s song: “brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo.

Their biggest fear: Her mothers and Seth dying; Catie knows it’s inevitable, of course, but she’s still terrified of the day when it will actually happen.

One turn-on of theirs: Self-assuredness. Catie finds it incredibly attractive when someone is fully aware of who they are, their faults, and their strengths, and are completely at peace with that.

Their go-to sleepover activities: Watching trashy movies and staying up until the wee hours of the morning, just swapping stories and giggling in hushed voices so the adults in the house don’t wake up.
