While I don't know much about it, I would probably bet there are tons of issues with the cruise industry that would make me not actually appreciate it broadly speaking - HOWEVER, I do really love a lot of the interior design of some cruise ships.. How it's almost like a miniature city crammed into one area. Multiple sections with all different aesthetic designs, a variety of shops, restaurants, activity centers, community seating areas, communal use spaces (like gyms, laundry, pools, cafeteria/buffet (which I always love anywhere)), etc. etc. but then also everyone has a little nice clean comfortable looking space of their own to retreat back to if they'd like to be alone. Maybe it's something akin to the idea of 'walkable cities', where everything you could ever want to do is kind of right there just a short walk away? I also especially love how so much stuff is stacked on top of other stuff, a layered cluster of spaces, bright open atriums, and when they're set up with little walkways down the center between a bunch of rooms so it's almost like a mini city street with apartments lining it, etc.. They often seem like they'd be SUCH a cool place to live permanently, IF only something identical was just built on solid land instead lol

ALSO people watching is fun #Plus i think part of what i hate most about Going Places and Doing Things is the commitment of it and traveling #especially in america where its like to get ANYWHERE it's a 3 hour drive or 15 min drive #or 20 min drive or 1 hr bus ride or blah blah. the idea of having plenty of fun little things to do that are all solidified #in ONE single complex that is also where your room is would actually encourage me to do things more because if #my health issues start flaring up or i get overwhelmed or etc. i can literally just... retreat back to my room that is a reasonably short #walk away. instead of like ''UGH now not only do i feel too bad to finish my excursion but ALSO i have a 40 min car ride ahead of me'' #etc. Not saying that even in that situation I would become Super Extravert Thing Doer like i still LOOVE a quiet lifestyle mostly alone do #ing the same 5 repetitive tasks over & over again working on specific hobbies. but just that i WOULD go out SLIGHTLY more and do Activities #if the activities were already brought to ME. like a cruise ship layout where you have your little room private space but when you feel #like it on your own terms you could venture out and go to a little cafe or a swimming pool or etc. WITHOUT even having to leave #or get in a car and travel. just walk form your room to The thing. amazing.. ground breaking.. BUT especially the layers are important. I #dont mean just 'have the same features but in a way that theyre on land' I mean LITERALLY translate the EXACT layout of the cruise ship but #on ground instead. Like I want a full community cafeteria on the middle floor of my apartment complex. there should be a pool & waterslide #on the roof. A community games room on the 4th floor. a library right under my bedroom. etc. etc. Though maybe ideally I would say #add a little extra space like most people couldn't live their entire lives in a cruise ship room layout. But maybe just have the rooms expa #nded to the average size of like a 3 bedroom apartment. and then still stack them on top of each other.. More spacious decks so people can #have some plants (but also a community garden somewhere too). ANYWAY... Idk I just always love the aesthetics. I would love to tour a cruis #ship but like NOT go on a cruise EVER lol.. but just.. SEE the space. I love interiors so much. Also makes me think of worldbuilding like. #I think cruise ships could also be good inspiration for underground stacked cities in layers. things like that. been an ER tech one (1) week and they're already like "wanna be unit clerk?" and i tried it today (heavily supervised) and unfortunately for me i LIKED it so.

#houston we have a problem #unit clerk is the organizer of the organized chaos second to charge nurse and sometimes not even second depending on the task #it's a little like dispatching which i was not really good at but there were parts of it i excelled at and enjoyed #(there were also parts i hated which seem to be minimal in the clerk position) #the thing about being unit clerk though. is that they will call you in all the time #because not a lot of people volunteer to do it and/or are good at it #and i could be good at it

The Beast in the Cursed Woods

There was once a small, idyllic village within which lived a modest but happy people. Life in their village could have been perfect bliss if it had not been situated right next to a large and thick forest, that was said to be haunted by a particularly gruesome beast, for whoever set foot into the forest, was never seen again. For this very reason, the villagers would avoid entering the forest at any cost. Most of their errands could be accomplished by staying within the bounds of their village anyway and longer travels were seldom necessary; and if they needed to journey farther away, they would make sure to use the roads that led well around the forest, even if that meant taking a considerable detour. One day it came to pass, however, that a stranger came into the village, walked up to the local smithy and placed a big order, demanding it to be taken to their abode on the other side of the forest as quickly as possible. As the mysterious stranger was dressed in fine clothing and paid a large sum of money upfront, with the promise of an equally large sum to be paid upon delivery, the blacksmith very willingly accepted the order, with no further questions asked.  He then set out to fulfill the order as expeditiously as possible. Upon its soon completion, the blacksmith’s apprentice was tasked with delivering the order to the customer’s address, along with the express instruction to take the swiftest route to the proclaimed destination, even though it meant passing directly through the haunted woods. The apprentice was a hard-working, obedient fellow, who, even though he did not like his master’s plan, immediately got ready to do as he was bidden....

The blacksmith's apprentice does not set out on this own, however - he is accompanied by a fair maiden whom he loves dearly... Since it is a LauraMax Quarry fic, I'm sure you can guess who the apprentice and his maiden are ;)

They get lost in the woods and come across a forlorn hut, where they try to find shelter... unfortunately it is locked. But something odd catches their attention... a big, old, gnarly oak tree - with a yellow door fitted in the wide trunk? Mysterious.... 👀

Well, they end up opening the door and the youth gets attacked by a vicious monster, receiving a nasty bite... A disgruntled hunter appears and captures the beast, but he has bad news for the couple - the youth is now cursed himself, doomed to become a monster when the next fullmoon rises...

“Is there no way for the curse to be broken?” The maiden asked, weeping, “Is there no way of saving him?”  “No,” the hunter said harshly, “there is but one way to break this curse, and that is so hard that you will not succeed at it, for many have tried as I have tried it myself in an attempt to save my brother, but it could not be done.” “As long as there is a chance of saving my beloved, I have to at least try," the young maiden said determinedly, “I will not, I must not fail.”

And that sets off Laura's big old journey (naturally with 3 tasks that need to be accomplished - now I only have to figure out what those tasks are supposed to be ;)

Naturally, I take plenty of inspiration from various Grimm fairy tales (especially the creepy ones and the ones with female heroes): The Robber's Bridegroom, Jorinda and Joringel, The Seven Ravens, The Nix of the Millpond, Fitcher's Bird, etc.

Like, Right now i only really have Vibes for Aetius and Serapis instead of anything approaching a story.

Aetius is a hyper, bouncy, constantly moving Cat™ guy who causes problems on purpose without any thought for the consequences and then is very upset when those consequences (big or small) come for him.

Serapis is a slow and deliberate maze beast. A classic minotaur guarding his maze and taking great pleasure in the constant battles he finds himself in. He's very cool and level headed. A bit brusque but kind to the other monsters within his maze.

Their energies work well together but neither of them really work on their own, Aetius is annoying without Serapis, and Serapis is boring without Aetius, so splitting them up at any point within the story is a no.

Which is a problem because Serapis doesn't have any desire to leave the maze and Aetius is too scared of what might be beyond the wall to have much interest in leaving either. So neither would intentionally quest to see the outside world and there's no quests to be had within the walls other than their long established routines of guarding their dens and killing any who come too near.

Which makes me think that instead of having them quest to leave, they should be trying to return home to the maze. Maybe they're captured for one reason or another. A minotaur to guard and a sphinx to keep around as yard decor or something. They escape before Aetius can be slaughtered for his pure gold pelt and are now in the typical "long way from home" plot. Only with the added risk that comes with being a big bull monster and a guy who is very visibly actual gold.

And idk. That's just Boring to me for some reason. Maybe it's because I see them as being already established as a couple by then, but if they weren't I doubt either would have stopped to help the other as a stranger or passing acquaintance when their own skin was on the line.

They could be forced to leave by some curse or disease. Off to go find a cure for themselves or the maze. but that feels bleh.

I'm going to sleep on it, but i think the issue I'm having is neither of them want more than they have because neither of them Know there is more to be had.

#maube id lean into the minotaur myth #minos dies with his only heir being the big bull monster thats out in the maze and the country is plagued until the bull is crowned king. #And then the rest of the story is Serapis and Aetius trying to adjust to Royal life because neither of them can escape #and serapis is clearly just a figurehead #maybe they meet when Aetius is caught by someone Serapis had tried to give an impossible task. #and like #Serapis fully expected the knight or whatever to die fighting any sphinx they tried to catch. but they didn't #and now he has a badly injured sphinx at his feet and it just reminds him of how much he resents humanity and misses the maze and #all the monsters in it #He says he demanded the sphinx unharmed and kills the knight. not caring if that was true or not. #he takes the sphinx and nurses him back to health on his own because he has no interest in risking tempting human greed with his new friend #and then the story is Aetius fully devoted to Serapis as a his hero #and struggling to adjust to life outside the maze too. #and then idk #they find a way to get the shadow government to name a different king and for the gods to accept the king so that Artius and Serapis #can go back to being maze monsters #glad i wrote that in the tags #very useful #i rhink thats it adjacent tho #still needs more tuning

#vent #Anyway. im a personal needs aide in a skills classroom. what does this mean???? they stuck me in a skills xl #classroom & the teacher straight up wants compliance & not learning. my kid also has a nurse who is so abelist that she regularly refers to #the kid as essentially a bump on a log.
