Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin (SPOILERS)
I just finished Serpent and Dove and I’d like to say I was not at all disappointed. I try to keep myself from getting super excited about new books when I see ads for them because I don’t want to be disappointed by them. But with a book about a witch and a witch hunter falling in love I literally could not control myself.
A visual representation of how excited I was when this book got delivered:

I got sooooo lucky and ended up having a beach trip and some not busy nights and was able to read it fairly quickly.
First off, let’s talk about the characters.
LOU. I LOVED HER. Not only was she witty and tough as all hell, she still cared about her friends. She was super clever and was able to survive and stay hidden from the strongest witch in the world for an impressive amount of time.
At first I was worried that Reid was going to be too focused on rules and stuck up for me to like, but nope. I enjoyed him. He’s loyal and caring and just wants to make everyone happy. I also enjoyed how Lou helped him let go of some of his seriousness.
Coco was a totally schemer and I loved it. I felt like she was almost always one step ahead of everyone.
Ansel’s name ironically keeps trying to autocorrect to angel, which is what he is so that’s fitting.
The Archbishop was a shady ass guy. I did not know what to make of him throughout the book. I couldn’t tell if he was going to be evil AF and try to kill everyone or what.
Jean Luc was a minor character but I feel like he’s going to be important in the next book. He was just an ass. Totally the type of character that I’d want to punch if he were real.
Now. The Plot.
The beginning started off with an attempt to steal some important jewelry which of course was entertaining and exciting. I love a good theif.
I wasn’t sure how Lou and Reid were going to end up married and the way it happened wasn’t all that unbelievable. The possibly corrupt archbishop trying to keep one of his top warriors from punishment by forcing him into a loveless marriage? Genius.
I won’t ruin much of the middle for you, but reading about Lou and Reid’s relationship was fun. It developed naturally and they were both plagued with thoughts about whether it was right or wrong. Reid because he originally was in love with someone else and wasn’t supposed to get married at all, and Lou because he kills her people.
The ending had me HOOKED. I could not put it down. I woke up 30 minutes earlier than necessary for work so I could read. I read while I ate breakfast, I read while I drank my coffee, I read while on my break. I got home and the first thing I did was pick up my book. I haven’t found a book that made me do that in a while.
This was me for the past day:

The twists at the end were WILD and had me like:

In conclusion I would 110% recommend this book. Go buy Serpent & Dove right now.
