Open mindedness and willingness are traits that are beneficial in improving not only our personal relationships, but especially our relationships with dogs. Credit must be given to @ferndogestates Rachael and Lorenzo, who contacted me and openly admitted they needed help with their two American Bulldogs, Harley and Bruno. They were already open minded; a monumental obstacle overcome, they just didn’t know it yet! Harley became a member of their family and was later joined by Bruno. Shortly thereafter, they began exhibiting extreme reactivity and guarding behavior. It was more than evident when Bruno tried to break his way through the glass at me as he guarded the car! Remove mom and dad from the car- different Bruno! We must remember, the American Bulldog comes from a line of farm guard and catch dogs, so the instinct to protect and defend is always there. Instinct to correct unstable pack members is also there amongst dogs, hence Bruno’s tendency to “go at” Harley when reactive AND the other way around. Picture a pleasant walk becoming a barking tangled mess of 170 lbs worth of American Bulldog and poop bags- not pleasant after all. To a dog, decision making is kindness and without it they’ll take matters into their own paws. Rachael and Lorenzo were absolutely willing to implement this philosophy and have done so. Every week they return, the reactivity to dogs decreases and guarding becomes more controlled. I think the serene photo speaks for itself. Meet Chili, the 80 lb, #AmericanBully. He’s a little #pitbull and a little #bulldog. Of what exact breeds he may consist is actually immaterial to us though. “Why?”, you may ask? Because he’s 100% dog! That’s all that matters. Before you start examining us under a microscope though, please realize we fully understand that breed characteristics and tendencies do matter regarding predicting and evoking certain behaviors. Dogs must be approached as a species first, then as individuals and finally by breed. There are lazy Leonbergers and batty Bassets, but we refuse to generalize. Doing so risks forming a preconceived notion. Do we listen to our human clients explain their dog situation? Absolutely, and with the utmost attentive compassion. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve heard, “it’s either you help us or he may be put down”. It’s of paramount importance that we make an objective assessment though; totally free of prior judgement. There have been several cases when I’ve been surprised though. In Chili’s case, I was expecting a beagle!! Probably because Mr. William spoke of his late beloved pups so passionately over the phone. So you can imagine my inner monologue when I was greeted by Chili, who is very clearly NOT a Beagle!
