So I started watching this silly little amazing show late...started watching it out of curiosity last year and wound up binging the first two seasons. For the most part I forgot about it til this summer when season 3 rolled around. Now post-season 3 I am still thinking about this show, so I got into the fandom online to fill the gap and gahdamn! It's entertaining here but scaaaary...some of y'all? Whew chile! I can't tell if I hate it or love it here lol, but for better or worse y'all are my people.

Anyway, now that I'm here, this is a random and disorganised collection of some thoughts on HSMTMTS:

First and foremost my fave Sofia/Gina is an icon, the moment and we have no choice but to stan.

Second and foremost Dara/Kourtney is an absolute queen who has mastered the art of the slay, and if you disagree you're wrong.

I am a RINA...from the jump. I saw the vision. You did well Tim.

IF, however, our boy JACK somehow moved to SLC, I'm done with Rina. They were too cute <3

I enjoyed early days Portwell. I supported the end of PW when it clearly was not working.

I think EJ is a good guy and deserves happiness. Gina would agree. I wish certain parts of this fandom would recognise that.

I'm a little neutral on Ricky. He's cool and all, but I don't get the hype much. I only really love him in connection to Gina. I still think he deserves happiness.

I think they all deserve happiness frankly. They're kids. It's a tv show.

JENZARRA! I'm sorry Mike but Jenzarra supremacy.

Related to previous, Benjamin was underutilised :( I loved him in his Sue Sylvester era, wish it lasted a bit longer.

Jet is a national treasure.

I'll miss Nini. She wasn't my favourite, but I liked her, even when she was less of a main character.

I kinda think Nini/EJ might have made a good endgame. What even was their ship name though? I literally don't know...NJ? EJini? Salwell?

Wondering is still a top 10 of all HSMTMTS songs, even after season 3.

I need to see the thanksgiving hat make a comeback in season 4. Did Ricky grow into it?

Why did EJ call Ricky his brother? I still don't get it...they were never brotherly??

I didn't care for Rini as a couple, but the pairing brought some great songs to the show though.

Related to previous, I'm interested to see what music comes as a result of Rina. I'm not sure what to expect, but I have faith in the it girl and her boy.

EJ should have sang A Billion Sorrys for Nini. Also I disagree with Ashlyn, Elton wrote a bop.

Also, how come Gina never considered connecting Ashlyn with Jamie? She's also a super talented songwriter with an amazing voice. Doesn't make sense to me but it's fine because Gina Porter is never wrong, and if she ever was, no she wasn't.

Seb was robbed, he deserved the Beast role. #JusticeforSebby

Alright so, I still really like the potential of Rina but at this point, until Ricky figures stuff out, and dare I say, matures a little bit more (just a little bit--he needs to learn communication skills overall bless his soul), Gina really needs to find someone who will put her first. If that’s E.J. then hell yea, I’m all for it! 

I don’t hate Ricky. In fact, I like the writing for his character overall because it makes sense given everything he’s been through while in high school.

That being said, I don’t think I’ll ever really vibe well with Rini. They’re cute at times, but there’s nothing really substantial with them that is showing me legitimate character growth from both parties.

Thee Rina bible. It’s everything we could ever want and need. Everything we want s2 to be and more. It’s an absolute masterpiece in every way. So many parts where I nearly died, the angst in the fight scene, the tension before they made up (the dress scene that reminded me so much of that amylaurie scene I lost my mind a little more), them being absolutely gone for each other!!! it’s just perfect in every way.

When Your With Me and Were Alone by orphan account

‘Ricky Bowen remembers everything.’ This is a one-shot three-part completed series.

My favorite series, it’s gotta be. It’s the first of its kind for rina fics. Lore does an incredible job of realistically writing rina’s characterization and reactions to Gina moving and what would happen after. A wonderfully talented writer, utilizing the power of her words while minimalist carries an effect. 

You Know Me Better by This_is_Riri

‘Gina was moving. This would be her sixth move in seven years. She was used to it by now...only this time, it felt different. Post episode 7.’ This is an incomplete multichapter fic.

This one really gets you at your gut. Heart-wrenching for both characters but mainly gina. The vents that happen to both characters, it just makes sense that so much more than their vunerabilities bonds them together. Perfect execution of the mutual understanding trope.

I love a good five times plus one fic. This one is heartwarming, cheeky and cute. It gives a healthy balance of the inevitable anguish that comes with pining (and not just for the character but for frustrated readers that just wanna put these kids together already) but also the sweet innocence and fluff from first love (or first love adjacent).

A good look into what could've been for season one. Reflecting moments that felt like they could’ve easily been placed in the show and showed the subtly of the growth of rinas relationship. It wasn’t something that was thrown into our faces but came gradually and this fic facilitates that growth with key moments that add to that. A Great one-shot.

And the 7th Thing I Hate The Most That You Do (You Make Me Love You) by iknowpIaces

‘It doesn’t help that he really does look good in his costume. God, she hates him. She hates him. She hates him. Then, he has the nerve to smile at her. And Gina hates how that smile alone sends her over the moon.’ This is a completed one shot.

SOOOO GOOD. No one understands, I love the trope where one person has a crush on the other and it's unrequited (or it seems that way) but eventually it's apparent that they're also just as gone for that person as soon as they start moving on, or feeling fine with having their feelings not reciprocated. Then they're both just mutual pining messes, ugh I love it. This fic handles the trope with care and rina just comes together organically.

“Give me 4 weeks. I’ll help you out. Like… a crash course, if you will. 'How to be the perfect boyfriend for Nini Salazar-Roberts': A class taught by yours truly.” This is an incomplete multichapter fic.

A rom-com in the form of a fic. It’s so true to Ricky and Gina as characters and their dynamic. The writing is really good and gives so much in terms of plot. I really hope it updates soon because I love a good makeover/transformation fic, it gives she’s all that and geek charming in the best ways.

Katie does it again. Another classic that makes us fall for rina while they fall for each other under the stars. You can’t help but feel something for them right off the bat because theirs something about the cheekiness of the dynamic and so real. You can’t help but fall for them, a must read.

The Last Time by mytearsricochet

‘this is the one where gina meets ricky and nothing is against them. except for a few misunderstandings, forgotten birthdays, wrong people, and missed opportunities. because as much as love doesn’t care about time, this is the one where time cares about love. and with time, everything falls into place.’ This is a completed one shot.

SO UNBELIAVBLEY UNDERRATED. This fic is too excellent, it's everything rinas could want. it’s an incredibly well done long slowburn that makes you strap in for the ride. With all those teasing moments where they're mutually pining and they're just on the precipice of finding out their feelings for one another only to hold back and stay friends (until the end of course). The end makes you work for it, but so worth it when you get to it. 

10 Days in “Love” by kindredspiritsxo 

‘It was almost the end of high school and nobody had it figured out. Especially Ricky Bowen. His parents had recently divorced, he had no idea what he's doing for college, his longtime girlfriend dumped him the month before and now he's been replaced by one of the most popular guys in school.

To make matters worse, he leaves for Europe in two days for his senior trip. The same senior trip that said ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were going on. So, Ricky did what any desperate teenage boy would do to try and get his girlfriend back: he devised a plan. A plan that included the help of Gina Porter and playing pretend for 10 days.’ This is an incomplete multichapter fic.

I love a good traveling fic. Sometimes all it takes to get a character to wake up about things going on in their lives or feelings for character b is a good change of scenery. This fic does a great job of utilizing the enviornment to facilitate rinas love story through one of my favorite tropes, the fake dating trope. There's some angst along the way because nothing can ever come easy but it's not without its reward. It gives me major spiderman far from home vibes just solely because of petermjs adorableness and how that energy kinda translates to rina in this fic more so in the beginning before they have this repertoire.

‘with everything in her life finally at a stand still for once the last thing gina needs is one curly haired skater to come in and give her a reason to change again

(or, gina lets ricky back into her life the only way she knows how, at a distance, through daily voicemails, until her heart remembers why she can't love him anymore.)’ This is a completed one shot.

It hurts in the best way possible! that is the best way to describe this fic. Were taken on a journey where I personally wanted rina to just talk to each other in person but the magic was all in the voicemails and the power of their connection. There was a satisfying ending, I couldn't ask for more. If you haven’t read literally everything written by Katie go read it, it won't disappoint.

An amazing fic that hits every spot effortlessly, even the ones you didn’t know you had. Like Ricky being a lovesick puppy going to a drive-thru just to hear Gina’s voice for coffee, he doesn’t drink or like. All the while they’d been connected all along. I’m a sucker for any kind of soulmate implications or stories where people are unknowingly connected like that so this ones a real favorite for me. It’s sweet, lighthearted and funny and a great read.

There is something about Rina being written about from an outside perspective that is just so excellent. The story starting with Nini noting the obvious chemistry and their connection and being threatened by it, I don’t know it's just so pleasing to me. Another fic like that one of my favorites (one that I’m pretty sure I’ve suggested in my other rec list), pretend i don’t see it in your eyes by spobylol. Another absolutely excellent read that does not miss once. This story in contrast also writes from rina’s perspective as well which I also thought was well done.

The most iconic love confession I’ve read in a rina fic to date. it’s just so good, a certified rush every single time. The mutual pining hits spectacularly especially when you see just how soon it starts to hit Ricky that he’d made a mistake getting with Nini and him paying for that mistake. The writing only amplifies it. Also Ricky telling Gina he’s obsessed with her? yeah, I automatically added this fic to my list of faves.

An amazing fic, I need more people to know about it! I really like fics where the development between Ricky and Gina is gradual, which seems to be the case for a lot of fics but for this one in particular I like its execution. Obviously, at first, he’s with Nini so it’s like the dynamic is at a point of comparison from the start but we quickly learn that thanks to good ole mutual understanding and overall compatibility Ricky and Gina are just right for each other. A fun read that hits all the bases.

HSMTMTS 2x11: Let us pull up a chair as the dining room proudly presents... the reason for my next mental breakdown

I can't believe myself, honestly. Oversleeping on the one day of the week that I've got something exciting to wake up for? Oh well, I'm up now and I'd better go ahead and do this before my dashboard has showered me with spoilers. I mean, I have never really minded spoilers, but when it comes to this, somehow I do. Though I do wish something had forewarned me about last week's snap ending (get it, 'snap'... I'll see myself out). I'd better dive in already.

Yes, Mr Mazzara, that's what I've been saying for a while! Ok, maybe I haven't been very vocal about it, but it was in the foreground of my mind that they should have asked for Mr Mazzara's help re: transformation! I'm just glad he pointed it out. Not that he could have done much while he was busy playing therapist for his beloved Miss Jenn. Oh well.

Were those Ash and Ricky doing actual paired-up warmups? That is what they should have been doing for weeks now. That and having actual off-stage interactions, too. But I still subscribe to the theory that the gang had some good rehearsals off-screen — otherwise there's no way they could have been this good on stage as we saw in the previews. I said it last time and I'll say it again — not everything is for us to see.

Wow. The one time our leads are in unison, and it is about both being injured. The East High drama club must be cursed — they can't have one production run smoothly and without what can only be described as pure unbridled chaos.

They don't have any understudies? That explains some things... but also how? But also, I'm so happy Ashlyn is going on. No way she would have missed her first (first of many, right?) chance of being the lead because of some 'minor' injury.

Ricky and Nini still can't talk to each other properly. Oh well. Take your time. It's not like I care about this pairing anymore.

Did EJ just use the word 'dig'? Boy, the boy's got it baaaaaad. Also, what is it going to take for these two to realise they're in love? For all we know, they might have that big kiss we're all dreaming of and still be like 'nah, it's nothing, we're buddies'... give me a break! But I mean, at this point they might just be turning into Redlyn 2.0, where even a kiss doesn't define things. But hey, if they do follow in Redlyn's footsteps, that only means good things in their future, right?

What did that fake French git do to my boy Carlos? He's not supposed to look this inanimate until right before the climax of the play! Well, I mean, at least Seb serving as his interpreter means that Seb gets more lines for a bit. Too bad he can't go on for someone with more lines in the play.

Miss Jenn's 'words of inspiration' were less than inspired... yeah, this show's going down. Or it would, if it depended solely on her. Let's hope the kids do better. I mean, I know for a fact they will... at least for about 5 minutes of the thing. There is still room for things to go wrong and I'm scared.

Oh, my sweet boy... I wish I could jump in there and do something to help him feel less nervous. Thing is, if I were there, I'd probably be the most nervous of them all, even if I were playing Townsfolk #3 or something, and everyone's nervousness would rub off on me, and I would be making things worse instead of helping. So yeah, I'm kind of glad I'm not there.

Ahhhh who called it? @redlyncentral was it you? Ash got flowers for her Biggie! And there's a card whose contents we've yet to see. But that doesn't seem to be helping either. My sweet, sweet Reddy... I hope and pray he'll be alright.

Well this is awkward! Who told Mike to show up and shake everything up right now? Miss Jenn is literally on the brink of exploding, and now she's stuck in this completely unnecessary love triangle. She needs some space. And a quiet place to breathe, thanks Mr M for suggesting it.

'Did we forget to build a mote around the school or...' Yeah, you tell her, Rick! That girl whose name I never want to pronounce (because it makes me think of much nicer people and she's making me hate it) has no business being there. She's not... being given a redemption arc, is she now? Some people just don't deserve it. And if hating her is an unpopular opinion now, well, I never did care much about having popular opinions. I can live with that.

'Lily, scram!' Yes, thank you, Natalie! I've always wanted someone who would voice my thoughts in a way that the characters can hear them. Make this girl a main next season, won't you? (Just so we're crystal clear, I mean Natalie, not the other one.)

OMG Mr M is in the play! In a way... I love that!

I love, love, love the way they did the prologue. 'Repulsed [the prince makes an over-the-top gesture of repulsion] by her haggard appearance [the witch shows off her face to the audience]...' I love this. I would pay a lot for a chance to see their entire play, you know?

Oh dear, somebody give my boy Reddy some sort of... medical aid against all the throwing up! I've got a nice pill that helps me with my bad cases of motion sickness. Hey, so maybe I could have helped if I were there after all. Great, now I feel bad. But also, is all the throwing up an excuse on the writers' part to keep my boy off-screen for the majority of this episode? Because it's a really lame excuse.

Gina's 'Many questions' continues to be a mood. What exactly is Miss Jenn expecting from the kids? Last-minute adjustments? No way. This spells disaster.

Was Carlos on vocal rest or something? Because he shines like the star he is... despite all the very obvious nervousness backstage. I mean, I wouldn't have it any other way, but... oh well, I wouldn't say it's unrealistic. In my personal performing experience, the most nervous ones perform the best. (So... what is that saying for my boy Reddy? Good things only.)

I've already had the opportunity to geek out about Be Our Guest yesterday, but... I mean, just look at them! Carlos doesn't need actual candles to be on fire, Ashlyn is stealing the scene without any lines in it, Gina is absolutely gorgeous, and don't even get me started on EJ and Big Red looking at their girls in absolute awe! This is everything!

Aww, look at them! Gina and Ashlyn dancing together, I mean. They're sisters and it really shows. And I love them both so much.

Kourtney is an absolute show-stealer! I'm still upset about some casting choices (one of them is in this scene, doing his absolute best with the crumbs he has been given), but she is absolutely perfect. I think I'll rewind and watch this entire scene again before moving on with the rest of the episode.

I'd just like to point out that Frankie's voice in his lower register is everything!

'You absolutely dusted that stage'... Not EJ making a pun so punny even I could not have thought of it... boy is absolutely smitten!

Not me tearing up when Jordan Fisher appeared as Gina's brother... like, I knew it was happening — I knew it even before it was announced. And I still teared up because, well, it's emotional in-universe and out.

Awww, my boy Reddy is so in love with Ashlyn... I mean, who wouldn't be... but — not Ricky saying Lily might not be as mean as they thought. Especially not to Big Red of all people. To him, she was just as mean as they thought.

'Side hustle project in the south hallway'? Ooh, what is it, I want to know now!

Why do I feel like things are a bit too awkward between Kourtney and Howie? Not that I'm too invested in their relationship, but if it bothered me, imagine how it must feel for the stans.

No, Ash, you absolutely do not need to add any fancy riffs to the song! Especially not just because L... well, that girl did it. You're unique and lovely and a literal Disney princess inside and out. That girl? She's just a wolf in a sparkling golden dress.

Awww... Big Red literally lowers Ash's blood pressure! Those two are such an amazing couple! (Full disclosure, though, he kind of does the same for me too; the other night I had this horrible nightmare, and I woke up in cold sweat in the middle of the night, and then... ok, getting too personal there.) The point is, if even the fantasy of a Big Red hug makes me feel better, imagine what his actual presence would do for Ash at that moment. Where is my boy? Everyone seems to be looking for him.

Oh... guess they took my advice to give the poor boy something for his vomiting issue. Good for whoever thought of it.

And we're back to the Porter siblings... forgive me if I still can't wrap my head around calling Gina's brother Jamie. I don't know about you guys, but thanks to my lovely new friend Paz he will always be Theodore to me. I guess we can headcanon that as his middle name. Anyway, I love it that they made a joke about the hilarious height difference between him and Gina because, well, it's the only thing I can think about when I look at the two of them. It reminds me of me and my little cousin who has been taller than me since she was 10, and is still growing taller now at 13. But, I mean, it's not very hard to be taller than me, since I'm so, so short... ok, this is not about me. Moving on.

Was I the only one who actually laughed out loud at Ricky drinking from the bowl as the Beast? I mean, that part has always made me laugh in the original movie, but something about Ricky's take on it makes it even funnier.

Meanwhile, my girl Ash is absolutely killing it as Belle. Not me having the very same expression as Big Red while watching her... gosh, I love both of them so much! Also, no offence to the rest of the cast, but Julia really is the best vocalist out there. Out of all of them. I said what I said.

My apologies to Ricky, but his voice is just not it when it comes to playing the Beast. Still, with the other option being him putting on that fake deep voice from the audition, I'm glad he didn't.

Ahhhh Portwell nation you ok guys? Since we didn't get them singing Something There, this is very much the next best thing... and boy, is it good!

Those glances between Kourtney and Howie, on the other hand... what on Earth is happening there?

Ok, so you all know just how strongly I feel about Seb's casting as Chip, and yet... boy had one line and absolutely ate it up! Give him an actual singing role next time, Miss Jenn!

EJ being starstruck by Jamie not because he's a big music producer, but because he's Gina's brother... excuse me while I sob!

Excuse me, what!!!! 'A big brother figure'? Boy, this didn't turn out the way I thought it would... now I'm scared.

Way to ruin things, Jamie! And I don't even mean the fact that his name is not Theodore. It doesn't matter what his name is anymore. He might just have put a spanner in the works of Portwell, and they were just doing so well! Ugh, I'm so frustrated. I wish I'd never boarded — what did I call it — 'the majestic S.S. Portwell'. What if it doesn't set sail now?

And there goes another disappointment... Carlos' 'the orchestra hasn't vamped this much since Bop to the Top' line had nothing to do with Seblos, and everything to do with what might still be the downfall of this show. I am not ready.

No. Miss Jenn did not just say that. She did not just tell Ricky — who, may I remind you, not that anyone's forgotten, just fell off of a high place last episode — to 'jump off of something high'. I realise she's under all the pressure, but that is not an excuse. Well, at least she heard herself.

Oh my gods... Nini — well, Nina, actually — did not just call him 'Richard', did she? That's it, that's the point of no return. And well, I kind of wanted them to reach it.

Told you, didn't I? I told you that-girl-who-must-not-be-named was evil! I always follow my intuition and it has not once deceived me. Redeem that, if you can! Guess what? You can't. We've just reached another point of no return.

Wait, a bloody cliffhanger? I cannot handle this. I physically cannot handle this. If you need me, I'll be sitting on my bed in shock, trying to process everything that happened. I'll need a while to get a grip on myself.

Request: Could we get one about Ricky finding out Gina is staying

“She said yes!!” Gina exclaimed as her and Ashlyn jumped up and down in excitement.

Gina had just gotten off the phone with her mother to ask if she could stay at East High with Ashlyn’s family. Of course, her mother was cautious at first but after seeing how much her daughter has grown in these last few weeks, she couldn’t bear to move her away for the hundredth time. 

“I can’t believe you get to stay at East High!” Ashlyn threw her arms around Gina and hugged her tightly.

“Ashlyn, I love you but I can’t breathe.” Ashlyn laughed and slowly let go of her. 

“I’m sorry, I’m just so happy! We have to tell everyone, I’m pretty sure they’re all still inside but I think I saw Ricky head outside for something.”

“Oh, I’ll go get him.” Gina and Ashlyn separated as Gina walked out of the school in search of Ricky. Each step she took felt lighter than air as if she was on cloud nine.

She didn’t have to say any goodbyes, no tears were going to be shed. This is the first time in her life that she actually felt like she found her place. Gina had to pinch herself to assure that this wasn’t all some dream. 

It wasn’t.

This was really happening.

Gina finally spotted Ricky leaning against his car with his hands in his pockets, unaware that he was waiting for Nini. 

“Hey Wildcat.” 

Ricky heard the soft tone of Gina’s voice and snapped his head up. His mind has been wrapped around everything that just happened with Nini that he forgot that Gina was leaving tonight ... again. 

“G-Gina, I thought you had already left.” 

“Well um, actually-”

“You know, I didn’t get to say goodbye to you the first time. So I want to do it right.” Ricky wanted to keep this conversation as short as possible so he could have an easier time pushing down his feelings. He couldn’t let Gina know how much her leaving would hurt him. Then again, almost everyone important to him leaves in his life so this shouldn’t affect him as much as it did. 

But it does.

Ricky wrapped his arms around Gina for what he thought to be the very last time. He was losing the person who always understood what he was going through, someone who constantly picks him up when he’s down. He tried not to dwell too much on how he’d miss seeing her everyday in rehearsal showing off a new dance trick she learned or the fact that he won’t have the chance to see what other skills she would pick up off of YouTube. Gina Porter was one of a kind, at least in Ricky’s eyes.

“I guess now would be a good time to tell you that I’m not moving.” Gina said with her arms still around the teenage boy. Ricky pulls away from Gina, his hands still resting on her waist. Did he hear her correctly?

“Wait a minute, are you serious?” 

Gina nodded her head, “Surprise.” 

His lips slightly parted in shock. Ricky didn’t know what to think. He had already prepared himself to cope without having Gina in his life and now all of a sudden, she’s staying? 

There were a million things Ricky could say but all he could manage to do was stare at her. This wasn’t the plan, Gina was supposed to move. He was going to attempt that whole out of sight, out of mind tactic. 

“Well, that wasn’t the reaction I was hoping for.” Embarrassed, Gina removed her arms from around Ricky’s neck and crossed them across her chest. 

“No, it’s just ... I-”

“Ricky, Gina, there you guys are!” Nini’s voice interrupted. She waltzed up to both of them, intertwining her fingers with Ricky’s. He unintentionally tensed up as he felt the awkward tension arise between the three of them. Gina’s eyes landed on their hands. 

Her heart dropped. Somehow that hurt her more than seeing them perform Breaking Free onstage an hour earlier. At least then, she could force herself into believing that they were just acting, that they were just playing the role of Troy and Gabriella. But there was no stage here, there was no Big Red struggling to work the special effects or a big audience. This was real life. This was the real Ricky Bowen and Nini Salazar-Roberts, and that’s what broke Gina on the inside. Nonetheless, Gina decided to save her tears for her pillow because she’d honestly rather die than let either of them know what was truly going on in her head. 

“Gina, I heard the good news. We can finally have that sleepover!” Nini grinned from ear to ear, oblivious of whatever was going on with Ricky and Gina. 

“I know! But yeah, you can’t get rid of me that easily.” Gina winked, feigning enthusiasm for the moment, hoping it was enough to appease them. 

“Ashlyn invited everyone to her house to celebrate but playing Gabriella is more exhausting than it looks. So I’m just going to head home but Ricky, you should definitely go.” Nini glanced up at Ricky as he hesitantly looked between the two girls. 

“Uh, I’m pretty beat too so I’ll drop you off.” 

“Okay,” Nini moved to hug Gina, “I’m so happy you’re staying.” Gina and Nini shared a smile as Nini let go of her and got into Ricky’s car.

Ricky ran his hand through his curls as he grabbed the door handle before he stopped himself. He lifted his eyes towards Gina, “Thank you for staying. I know I was ready to say goodbye but to be honest, I don’t know what I would do without you. I’ll see you later.” 

Gina waved them off as Ricky drove out of the parking lot. A few moments passed before she made her way back into the school to meet up with her friends, with Ricky’s words and the sight of Ricky and Nini holding hands ambushing her thoughts. 

But as soon as she entered the building, no one wasted any time to attack her with a giant group hug. All the excitement and love surrounding her coming from everyone washed away any thoughts concerning Ricky.

She didn’t want to sound selfish, but tonight was about her. 

She could forget about Ricky. 

At least for tonight.

-Nini clearly wants to be with Ricky and at this point she just needs to break off with EJ. She knows she still has feelings for that boy and is just prolonging the inevitable.

-I love the budding friendship between her and Ashlyn. Wondering is a SONG ok.

-I know the focus was on Ricky not being able to dance but Nini wasn’t exactly nailing those moves either 💀

-She’s such a theater kid I love it!

RICKY

-I still think what Ricky’s doing is trash I’m sorry. He’s taking on a role he doesn’t want solely to get Nini back and like she said he really should just let someone who wants it have it. Even practicing the dance was still just to prove a point to Nini.

-The cologne thing was such a teenage boy thing to do I love how realistic this show is

-She spoke nothing but truths this episode! I thought she was gonna end up being EJ’s spineless lackey but she’s the only one on this show with real sense 😭

-Miss Ashlyn can SING! It might be too soon to say but she may actually have the best voice out of the whole cast

-I’m curious about the inspiration behind Wondering. She was singing like she FELT those lyrics so what’s the story there?

-I love how they gave her little quirks without making a big deal out of the fact that she’s qUIRkY xD.

-I’m sure she’s used to just being known as “EJ’s cousin” so I hope she’s able to make a name for herself outside of their familial relationship. That being said it’s cool how they have a good relationship and it’s not one of those things where he’s embarrased to be seen with her.

-I meant to say this in my first review but I love how there’s more than one plus size girl on the show!! We barely ever get ONE and when we do they’re a joke. To have two who may end up playing major roles in the show is everything 💕.

Insomnia - Chapter Four!

Ricky’s POV

“Soooooo, are you excited to see your giiiiirrrrrrllllllfriend?” Lizzie teases at the breakfast table.

“She’s not my girlfriend, and yes. I’m excited to see all my friends, Elizabeth. Now let’s get you to school. Your dad’s gonna be picking you up today. He put a note in your blue folder so don’t forget to give it to Mrs. Davidson, okay?” I remind her, as I check all of my bags to make sure I packed everything. 

Today’s the day, I’m heading to Salt Lake for Opening night. Today I get to see all of my friends for the first time in over three months. God I’m nervous. 

I drop Lizzie off and head to the airport. My school has the day off for a professional day, so I caught an early flight. That way I can get home and take a nap while Big Red’s at school. 

My phone buzzes. I look down hoping it’s Nini. It’s not.

MOM: Have a safe flight! C u Sunday night. I love u, xx Mom.

ME: Love you too mom! I’ll text when I land.

I haven’t heard from Nini in days. Not since my last message. Maybe this is a stupid idea. Maybe she doesn’t actually want to see me. Was she just being nice? God I’m so stupid. Maybe I shouldn’t even go. 

Just as I turn around to head back and get an Uber, my phone buzzes again, this time an incoming call from Chloe Garcia. 

“Hey Chlo, what’s up?” I ask, answering nervously.

“I was just making sure that you’re actually gonna get on that plane, mister!” She chuckles. I’ve only known Chloe for three months yet she knows me enough to know I’m second guessing my whole entire plan. 

“I don’t know, Chloe. What if she doesn’t actually want to see me? What if she just said ‘can’t wait to see you’ to be nice?” I complain. 

“Like how people say ‘nice to meet you’ to total strangers even though you don’t really know if it’s nice to meet that person?” She snorts. She’s referring to the day we met. 

“Chloe Garcia, this is Richard Bowen! You and him have similar schedules so you’re gonna be his peer mentor for the semester. Be nice.” Principal Stewart tells the lemon haired girl as he walks back to his office. 

“Chloe!” She sticks out her hand. I shake it.

“It’s actually not Richard, it's Ricky. Ricky Bowen,” I introduce myself. 

“It’s nice to meet you,” She starts, then sighs. “Well, it seems nice. I don’t really know you yet, you could be a serial killer. Are you a serial killer, Richard Bowen?” She ponders aloud. 

“Um… no? I’m just a skateboarder from Utah… And again, call me Ricky” I chuckle. 

“Okay. So Utah eh? So what are you doing in the Windy City then?” She questions. 

“My parents got divorced, and my mom got a job out here. Plus my gi- ex girlfriend was supposed to move- It’s a long story.” I stop talking, realizing that I’m totally rambling. 

“Well I can’t wait to hear it, Not Richard Bowen…” She says as we walk to our first period class. 

“Just go, Ricky, you’ll be fine!” She says before hanging up on me. 

Just then, my flight number is called. I guess there’s no turning back. Not now.

I sit on the plane, thank god I get a window seat. I pull out my phone, putting it in airplane mode.

On the plane, I decide it would probably be a worthwhile idea to actually watch the movie Grease, given that I barely know anything about the show, and i’m supposed to sit through a whole performance of it tomorrow. 

It’s nearly noon when my flight lands. Thank God I took a nap on the plane or I’d be a Zombie right now. 

“Hey bud!” My dad says, greeting me as I arrive at baggage claim. 

“Hey Dad!” I reply, hugging him. I pick up my east high duffel bag and head out to his car. 

“How’s your mom?” He asks, on the drive home. He always asks about her. I can tell he misses having people around the house. 

“Mom’s good. She wishes she could’ve come with, but work is crazy right now, plus she volunteered to watch Lizzie this weekend so Todd can go out on business...” I tell him. My dad has really grown to like Todd. Ever since they became Facebook friends, they realized that they actually have a lot in common. 

“That’s good. I bet Lynne loves having a little girl around. She always wanted a daughter,” He sighs. “How’s Lizzie doing? You guys getting along?” 

“Yeah, were super tight, actually, I drive her to school some mornings and we listen to the radio while she bugs me about my love life!” I laugh, checking the time on my phone: 12:15.

“You wanna grab a bite and then you can get some rest before you go see your friends?” He asks. 

“Sounds like a plan!” I tell him.

After we eat, I crash for a couple hours. It's not until I hear a couple dings from my phone that I realize just how long I’ve slept.

I look at my phone: 

Incoming Call: BIG RED 

“Hello?” I answer, sounding a little tired.

“Hey bud! We’re having final dress rehearsal tonight, so I might be home kinda late. What time does your flight get in?” Big Red asks excitedly. 

I can tell that he’s hype for the show. This will be his first time running lights for a show in the actual auditorium, he hasn’t stopped thinking about it. 

“Um, around 9ish?” I lie. I told Big Red that I wouldn’t be getting in till late, so that I can surprise him when he gets home from rehearsal.

Since I did get in a little earlier than expected, I may head over to the school now and surprise everyone. 

“Cool. Can’t wait to see you!” He says happily. 

“Me too, gotta go finish packing, see you later bud!” I reply, hanging up. 

I grab my skateboard and head to the school. The secretary hands me a visitors badge, it’s weird being called a “visitor” to the school. 

“Guess mine is not the first heart broken, my eyes are not the first to cry, I'm not the first to know there's, just no getting over you…” I can hear Nini’s beautiful voice from down the hall. 

I sneak into the auditorium. I see her singing on that stage. She looks so beautiful. She’s the epitome of Sandy and her combination of innocence and beauty. That’s when the flashbacks start. 

Here goes… "I don't get it, Troy. What kinda spell has this elevated IQ temptress girl cast that suddenly makes you wanna be in a musical?" 

I don't know. Maybe it's the way Gabriella always had your back. And maybe you can't stop beating yourself up for totally blowing it with her.

And look, Troy, even if you never said the L-word to Gabriella, 'cause that's, like, not even a word your parents say to each other… anymore… That doesn't mean that you don't… Maybe it just means you were waiting for the right time to say it… So that everyone could hear it… 

So that she could.

“Ricky?” A voice pulls me out of my flashback. “What are you doing here?”

I look to see Gina Porter standing in the doorway next to me, in full Rizzo costuming. 

“Gina! Hey!” I smile and pull her in for a familiar hug. “I caught an earlier flight and thought I’d sneak in and get myself a sneak peek at what I’m in for tomorrow night!” I tell her. 

“That’s amazing! So why do you look like you’re hiding?” She smirks. And she’s right. I was kinda hiding. 

But why? I want to see my friends. I want to see Big Red, and Gina, and… Nini.

The music slows down. 

“But now there's no way to hide, since you pushed my love aside, I'm outta my head hopelessly devoted to you… hopelessly devoted to you… Hopelessly devoted to y- Ricky?” 

The music stops.

Skate Park

a/n: hello everyone !! it’s currently 3:04 a.m. but i had this idea for a while and i just had to write it out. tbh this was planned to be a one shot but i think maybe it could be a 2-3 part kind of thing??? but if this flops, im going to pretend i never posted it

“He’s not going to come.”

Gina just finished putting her beanie onto her curly hair as she looked over at EJ in the driver’s seat. “What are you talking about?” She knew exactly what he was talking about but chose to play dumb instead. EJ rolled his eyes.

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe the guy who you’ve been not so secretly crushing on for the past couple of months. You know, the one who plays guitar and only wears Vans. Ringing any bells?”

Of course EJ knew about Gina’s love for Ricky, even if she didn’t quite realize it herself. After she moved in with his cousin Ashlyn, the two have become very close friends, which was a surprise to everyone. Ever since he’s learned from his past self that the world doesn’t revolve around him, EJ has become much more observant.

For instance, Seb and Carlos finally met each other’s families and are doing better than ever, Kourtney’s joined choir and preparing to take on Stephanie for class president and lastly, Ricky and Nini’s relationship which seems to be falling apart by the seams.

“I am not here for Ricky, EJ. We rarely ever talk to each other.” Gina’s heart ached knowing that her and Ricky went from talking everyday to a simple head nod while passing each other in the hallways. She knows he’s with Nini now, but did that mean they had to cut each other off entirely? She missed the way he used to sing to her, the inside jokes, the way they just got each other. The teenage girl assumed that whatever they had was completely over, she sometimes worried if they ever had anything to begin with.

“Oh, so you’re not making me take you to the skate park almost every Saturday night to rekindle your friendship with Ricky?” Unfortunately, EJ knew Gina more than she could handle. So naturally, she avoided his question.

“You don’t have to drive me here, I can literally walk from Ashlyn’s.”

“I don’t want you walking alone at night, it’s not safe.”

“EJ, we live in Salt Lake City. The only thing unsafe around here is your singing.” The two started to laugh as EJ gently pushed her.

“Besides, I’m a big girl. I’m pretty sure I can handle myself.”

“Yeah, make sure to remember that the next time you ask me to kill a spider for you.”

“Whatever asshole, I’ll see you in a few hours.” Gina hopped out of the car with her black and purple skateboard, ignoring whatever EJ called out to her as she walked away. Their conversation lingered in her mind as she pulled her helmet out of her bag. She may be better than your average skateboarder but she wasn’t quite fond of cracking her skull open anytime soon.

“Not so secretly crushing on” ... was she that obvious? She’d been putting an immense amount of effort in trying to suppress her feelings for Ricky as soon as she found out he got back together with Nini. Whether that meant skipping out on group hangouts in Big Red’s basement knowing the curly haired boy would be there or sitting with EJ and his senior friends at lunch because she couldn’t stand the sight of Ricky’s arm around Nini at their table. 

Gina shook her head. No wonder he started distancing himself from her, she’s been doing the exact same thing to him.

Luckily, she still has the rest of her friends to lean on. She lives with Ashlyn and EJ is pretty much always at the house, so one thing led to another and an automatic power trio they were. After learning Big Red beautifully tap dances, she convinced him to take classes with her at her dance studio. Carlos and her share a passion for theater so it was only inevitable for them to reach BFF status. She even visits Seb’s farm from time to time and if that doesn’t show how much she’s grown then ask the multiple pairs of shoes she’s voluntarily ruined by stepping in mud and dirt.

“Gina?” A familiar voice interrupted her train of thought. She looked up and locked eyes with the boy whose name stayed on her mind day and night.

“H-Hey Ricky. What are you doing here?” He chuckled, making Gina’s heart skip a beat.

“I should be asking you the same thing. I thought I was the skateboarder in this friendship.” Although surprised, Ricky couldn’t be more glad to see the girl in front of him. He can’t even recall the last time they spoke more than two sentences to each other so he hoped that this was the chance for them to catch up.

“Well you were, but then you stopped showing up. So now, l’m king of the skate park.” Gina grinned from ear to ear feeling proud of herself. Her bright smile made the butterflies erupt in his stomach, a feeling he had long forgotten. Him and Nini have been arguing for weeks now and everything between them has changed.

The daily phone calls stopped, every time they do talk it somehow ends up in a disagreement , and even when they kiss or hold hands, it doesn’t compare to the feeling he just experienced. It’s like they don’t fit anymore, the passion has disappeared. Was it his fault? Should he just give up? The whole childhood best friends to lovers fantasy felt like a huge joke to him now. Nonetheless, he knew having these thoughts were wrong considering he was still in fact, dating the girl he’s known since kindergarten.

“Um, yeah. I’ve been busy with school and all the musicals and stuff. I actually only came here tonight because Nini and I just got into a big fight.” He nervously said while rubbing the back of his neck, one of his many habits.

“Oh my gosh, Ricky. I’m so sorry, do you want to talk about it?” Gina took a step towards him, allowing Ricky to catch a whiff of her jasmine-scented perfume. Some things never change, Ricky thought as he reminisced of one particular weekend where Gina dragged him to their local mall to shop for clothes and stock up on any and everything that Bath & Body Works sold that was jasmine-scented. The only downside was that she thought it would be funny to spray perfume on his sweatshirt multiple times. Ricky didn’t mind but he ended up giving her his hoodie since the fragrance was a little bit too strong for his liking. He wondered if she still had it...

“Don’t be, its not your fault. But actually I’d rather not think about it. Kinda need a distraction.”

Gina nodded in understanding and an awkward silence fell among them. The urge to reach out and wrap her arms around him was so intense she had to clasp her hands together for restraint. She knew it wasn’t her place to comfort him, especially after weeks of no communication whatsoever. But that doesn’t make it any less harder for her to ignore the absolute pain in his eyes. If it was a distraction he wanted, then it’s a distraction he’ll get. She picked up her skateboard.

“Then you came to the right place my friend. Come on, let’s go see if you still live up to your reputation. Unless, of course, you’re scared of being shown up the one and only Gina Porter.” 

Ricky’s mood began to change, feeling lighter than he did moments before. That’s what Gina did best, she always managed to make him feel better no matter the circumstances.

“Nah, you’re not that scary.”

Skate Park

a/n: I AM SO SORRY this definitely was supposed to be posted last week but then the end of the semester stressed me tf out and now we’re here!! but i made it extra long to make up for the delay <3

Part One

*****

“Well, if it isn’t the Ricky Bowen himself.”

Ricky and Gina’s conversation is interrupted by a teenage boy with dirty blonde surfer hair wearing a tight, long sleeve shirt that definitely emphasized his six-pack.

Ricky laughed and dapped the boy up, “What’s up, Mason?”

“Not much, but we missed you man! Where have you been?”

“You know, school and stuff.”

“Ah whatever, it’s all good. Gina’s been keeping us company.” Mason went over and hugged Gina for barely more than five seconds but to Ricky, it felt like an eternity. He didn’t know the two would be as close as they were but then again, he doesn’t really know anything about Gina’s life anymore.

“I’m way better anyway.” Gina joked as she let go of Mason and went to greet the rest of the guys she usually hangs out with each weekend leaving Ricky and Mason alone.

“Damn right.” Mason said under his breath while staring at Gina as she walked away. Ricky looked back and forth between the both of them and grew suspicious.

“Do you like her or something?” Ricky asked with evident attitude in his voice.

“Like her? No. She’s gorgeous and we flirt sometimes but she definitely has feelings for someone else.” 

Ricky decided to ignore the whole ‘flirting’ comment. What really intrigued him was what Mason said about her having feelings for someone else. “How do you know she likes someone?”

“Dude, she’s resisting me. That’s the only logical explanation.”

Who can it be? It can’t be anyone from their friend group because everyone is basically in a relationship. Maybe it was Rico, he had caught him eyeing her at rehearsals the other day. Or maybe it’s EJ, she does live with his cousin and they hang out all the time so it only makes sense that she’s fallen for him. Unless, Ricky was completely wrong about both of them and Mason was just trying to protect his fragile ego because Gina isn’t falling at his feet. He thought it’d be best to go with the latter.

“Why do you even care anyway? Don’t you have a girlfriend?” Mason said. Ricky furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. Mason goes to West High and they haven’t talked since the beginning of the school year, so Ricky wondered how he even knew about Nini. 

The curly haired boy began to notice Gina down in the rink practicing her tricks and was anxious to join her so he cut the conversation with Mason short.

“Um, yeah I do. But we’ll catch up later, alright?” Ricky moved towards Gina with his skateboard.

Two hours had passed and during that time the two teenagers were the happiest they’d been in weeks. Ricky caught up with all his skater friends and Gina even ended up teaching Ricky some new tricks. Of course, Mason incessantly flipped his pretty hair and tried flirting with Gina but unfortunately for him, she was too consumed by Ricky. Gina’s not blind, she knows how attractive Mason is and she’s picked up on his frequent flirtations. She’d be an idiot to not give it a chance. 

Nonetheless, she couldn’t get past the fact that his piercing green eyes don’t mesmerize her the same way Rick’y chocolate eyes did. Nor was his wavy hair shaped into delicate curls. Gina could go on and on about how Mason and pretty much any other guy she’s ever met will never compare to Ricky. But that’s not a particularly healthy strategy since she’s supposed to be moving on from him.

Although they were having a great time, it was getting late and both of them had to be home soon. 

“I had so much fun tonight.” Gina smiled from ear to ear as she took off her gear.

“Same here. You’re pretty good, Porter. But don’t worry, I’m gonna get my title back.” Ricky teased.

“Does that mean I’ll be seeing you next weekend, Bowen?”

“As Troy Bolton would say, bet on it.” Ricky cringed as soon as the words came out of his mouth followed by Gina’s laughter.

“I think all these musicals are finally getting to you.”

“They really are. But um, do you need a ride home? We could stop for ice cream if you want?” Her heart started pounding. If Gina didn’t know any better, she’d think Ricky just asked her on some kind of informal date. But of course, Nini was the one that he loved, not her. 

Before she could respond, Mason appeared. “Hey G, need a ride home?” 

Ricky visibly sucked in a breath as he shoved his hands deep into his pockets. Mason had been getting on his nerves a lot more than usual tonight and Ricky couldn’t really figure out why.

Gina glanced over at Ricky. She could either go get ice cream with the boy who she was supposed to be getting over or ride home with the boy who was most likely just trying to get in her pants. 

“Uh, actually Ricky’s taking me home.”

She was never good at making decisions anyway.

Ricky and Gina sat in Ashlyn’s driveway in his car while enjoying their frozen treats.

“Ugh, you have no idea how long it’s been since I’ve had ice cream. Ashlyn’s mom is starting this new diet and forbids anything that’s actually edible.” Gina excitedly licked her chocolate ice cream, unaware that she accidentally got some on her nose. Ricky smirked at the sight.

“What?” Gina wondered what could be so funny about her basically being starved by Ashlyn’s mom.

“Um, you just got a little something.” Ricky reached over and gently wiped the ice cream with his thumb. His touch sent shivers down Gina’s spine, it’s been so long since they had any kind of physical contact and it was taking an obvious effect on the teenage girl. To her dismay, it seemed as though Ricky was completely unfazed. 

“I forgot to thank you. For tonight, I mean. You really helped get my mind off things.” Ricky ran his free hand through his locks. 

Gina nodded. “Of course Ricky. Now, if you don’t mind me asking, what was your fight with Nini about?” 

Ricky’s shoulders tensed as he was reminded of the huge argument him and his girlfriend had beforehand. He wasn’t exactly in the mood to talk about that particular subject but it’s been proven time and time again that he couldn’t say no to the girl sitting beside him. 

“If I tell you, will you answer a question of mine?” If Ricky was going to indulge in his relationship with Nini, he might as well get something out of it.

Gina shrugged her shoulders, “Sure, whatever you want.”

Ricky took a deep breath and exhaled, “Um, you probably haven’t noticed but Nini and I are not exactly ... good right now.” She would think that upon hearing this news, she’d be ecstatic. But that wasn’t how Gina was now, she wanted Ricky’s happiness and seeing him in pain just made her world crumble. 

“Every day, it’s a new fight. Sometimes I wonder why we’re even dating anymore. Which is what my idiot self told her today and it was just some big blow up. Things were said, she threw me out of her house and now I’m here.” Ricky slowly looked at Gina to see her reaction, sadness was written all over her beautiful face.

“Ricky, I may not have been at East High long but ... I know you and Nini are good for each other. Sure, you guys have been hitting some bumps but c’mon, you’re the Ricky and Nini. Your love will bring you back together, just give it time.” Gina always puts Ricky’s feelings above her own, she’s like that way with everybody. If that meant putting on a facade, so be it.

Ricky scoffed, “You think so?” 

Gina plastered a small smile on her face, “I know so.”

“Well, I guess it’s time for my question. Mason mentioned that he’s been flirting with you but he thinks you like someone else. Is that true?”

Gina was taken aback by his question. Was he serious? Why does he want to know if I like someone? If they lived in a parallel universe maybe she would find the courage to admit that her feelings for him were growing uncontrollably and how she’s terrified of this newfound feeling. Maybe she’d confess how hurt she was when he dropped their friendship like it was nothing even after everything they’ve been through. Alas, she couldn’t possibly say any of that.

“If you’re asking me if I like Mason, the answer is no.” A heavy weight lifted off of Ricky’s shoulders. Good, he thought, she deserved much better than him. She didn’t fully answer his question but it’ll have to do. “My turn again, do you still have that terrible hat I made you?”

Ricky’s face brightened as he pulled the middle console up and grabbed the hat Gina made, it felt like years since she initially gave it to him.

“Got it right here, I would never throw it away. Do you still have that hoodie I gave you when we went to the mall that one day?”

Gina smiled to herself as she thought of that memory, “Yeah, it’s hanging in my closet.” She made sure to leave out the minor detail of how she had slept in that hoodie on multiple occasions, up until Ashlyn brought her back to reality. 

She still had it. Ricky didn’t know why but he felt this strong urge to do something, anything. He found himself leaning closer towards her, causing Gina’s entire body to freeze. All common sense Ricky had inside him flew out the window as he looked down at her soft lips and back up to her wide brown eyes.

Gina had no idea what was happening, with Ricky being so unbelievably close to her, it was impossible to think clearly. Ricky just wanted to feel that passion again, the kind of passion he knows he would feel with Gina. He wanted to feel like he actually mattered to someone. He stared longingly at her face as he pushed a stray curl behind her ear. 

Gina was sure he could hear her heart physically exploding inside her chest but remained silent as she was unsure of where this was going. He lightly placed his finger under her chin as she bit her lip. He couldn’t take it anymore, she was driving him crazy. He had missed her so much over the past few weeks and tonight proved that he never wanted to be away from her again. 

One kiss, that’s all he needed. 

“Kiss me.” Ricky whispered.
