“The Sound of Batman” - The Dark Knight’s Tortured Psychology in Arundel’s ‘Arkham City’:
Two years after 'Batman: Arkham Asylum’ in October 2011, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their roles in Dini’s new sequel video game, 'Batman: Arkham City’ for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Building on the intense and atmospheric foundation of 'Arkham Asylum, you are the Dark Avenger plunging into Arkham City, the new 'home’ for all of Gotham’s criminals. While trapped in this insane society, Batman must discover the secret behind “Protocol 10” created by Hugo Strange. Placing Batman Family members such as Nightwing and Robin within this all new story, 'Arkham City’ illustrated an authentic Batman experience for fans with advance gameplay, from street fighting to stealth modes, intense forensic investigation and best of all, a look into Batman’s tortured psychology going up against his arch nemesis. Nick Arundel and Ron Fish return to compose this soundtrack, bringing a dramatic tension to the melodies as heard in other Batman scores such as Shirley Walker’s in 'Batman: The Animated Series’. While the sound is still synthesized, the orchestration rises in texture and sound, playing into the terror and chaos that plagues Batman with every progression of the game. Batman’s status as a cultural icon expanded to new fans through the over 15 million consumers of this game, receiving awards such as Game of the Year and Best Original Score from various media outlets. 'Arkham City’ is still regarded as one of the best games of the Dark Knight even with its following chapters in the franchise, which we will discuss soon in our retrospect of Batman music over the last 76 years. “The Sound of Batman” - Nick Arundel’s ‘Arkham Asylum’:
In 2009, Paul Dini wrote a new Batman mythos story for the newest video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, created by Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy) has to stop his arch nemesis The Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill) from detonating several bombs across Gotham City. From the 'Detective Vision’ within the gameplay, to the visual settings of botanical gardens and underground caverns seen in classic comic books of the Asylum, 'Arkham Asylum’ enriched the Caped Crusader’s dimensions in video game media, showcasing the dark vigilante like never before in the then new consoles. Dini’s new story came with a whole new score composed by Nick Arundel and Ron Fish. While the sound plays like your typical video game tune, the mixture of synthesized bass lines and elegant orchestration turn the game into a suspenseful and thrilling story any Batman fan would enjoy. Arundel and Fish would return to compose the sequel game’s soundtrack, Arkham City, in 2011, which we discuss in our next post of the session.
