A web of lascivious affairs are shown, revealing not just a weaved web of deceit, but also weaves on the ground, from being, at times, pulled. Edges are, at various times, also snatched in this sordid tale. Mona Scott Young has created a telenovela for the inner city - and the promise that working hard can book you a studio session, despite the barrier of no talent.
It's also a PSA for the dangers of entanglement resulting in babymotherdom. Unequally yoked unions are a rampant problem not only in New York, but also in L.A., Miami, and Atlanta. This is a ghetto armageddon that will entertain the whole family, and encourage you to reach just a little bit further into your drawer of condoms when you're caked up with your mistress - or breaking up with her because Love & Hiphop has taught you a true lesson in commitment.

10. “Wu-Tang Is For the Children”
Although rappers interrupting awards shows to dubiously fight for their place in history shows up later on this list, when Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan did it, it felt zany and radically thrilling. After losing to Shawn Colvin for Song of the Year at the 1998 Grammys, Ol’ Dirty Bastard — draped in a red blazer and white flag — arrived on stage to proclaim “Wu-Tang is for the children!”
Hip-hop would continue to miss out on major awards. To see Ol’ Dirty go on stage wasn’t a drunken moment from one of music’s wildest entertainers, but a plea to take hip-hop seriously at the Grammys. As we know, hip-hop still might have a long way to go before receiving its props at the Grammys.
9. Def Jam Records Is Formed
The record producer Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons founded the seminal rap label in 1984, signing Run-D.M.C., the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and DMX, among others. If the ‘80s was the golden age of hip-hop, then Def Jam was ground zero for the time.
8. Eric B. & Rakim Usher Release Paid in Full:
Jay-Z once said that when Rakim released his first record, the gap between him and other rappers was as wide as it has ever been. The God MC was crisp and lucid; efficient and seasoned. Paid in Full was the benchmark that all rappers looked at if they were serious. If Big Daddy Kane was an exploitation character, then Rakim made it cool to be smart.
7. Rap City Debuts
Rap City was a showcase for talent and the varied elements of hip-hop, showing the outfits, a rambunctious swagger, and clear-eyed raps. Hosted by hype-men Joe Clair and Big Tigger, the program was seminal for any hip-hop fan. It’s not possible to pick the best moment, but here are some of the highest highlights: the Dipset freestyle with Cam’ron in a bucket hat counting cash made people into fans; Lil Wayne rapping “Live From The 504” with Birdman behind him, was a showcase for one of rap’s child prodigies turned legend. Or it might be when Bone Thugs showed up. It was a different style of rapping than Rap City was used to. All that mattered was if you could rap.
6. Pharrell Creates Billionaire Boys Club
Billionaire Boys Club isn’t the first fashion line created by a hip-hop artist — Rocawear and Sean John had their moment in the sun, too. But BBC felt different, and was different. It’s credited with being the first fashion label to combine Black streetwear with high fashion, which eventually became the mission of Virgil Abloh, who died in 2021. Debuting in the “Frontin’” video, Pharrell Williams’s fashion line completely eradicated the idea that hip-hop clothes could not be considered chic and high fashion.
Now, 20 years later, Pharrell is running Louis Vuitton’s men’s collection! This marks the beginning of that journey. Hip-hop hasn’t been the same after Pharrell introduced his label to high fashion.
5. ASAP Yams and ASAP Rocky Bring New York Back With 2011’s Live. Love. ASAP
In the aftermath of the boom bap – Jay-Z and G-Unit and Dipset’s reign – New York had lost its footing to the hooks of the Southern rappers who roared like bears finding food. All that philosophical and five-percenter talk went stale. It became a land of 808s and snares over sardonic one liners.
Then ASAP Rocky’s Live. Love. ASAP came around. ASAP Yams, his partner, had told Rocky to learn how to rap like everyone. That is where the deeply-pleasing and broad-raging music on that mixtape comes from. “Bass” sounds like it could have been a Bone Thugs song; “Trilla” sounds indebted to Houston. All the while, the Harlem-bred Rocky was nonchalantly charismatic. Live. Love. ASAP was the moment that New York became whole again.
4. Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift
It wasn’t Kanye West’s place to interrupt Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards — it wasn’t West’s category that she won, it was Beyonce’s. And it was gauche — an example of the emotional awareness and intelligence that West has lacked throughout his public life. Award shows are a formality for television — a place where celebrities perform and legacies get built. Taylor Swift winning over Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” — which many think was superior to Taylor’s “You Belong With Me” – wasn’t this blow to Black creativity. Black artists will always shine, it’s in our blood.
The only person this served was Kanye West and his fragile but massive ego. His need to interrupt was from a grim need for attention. West might have been right that night, but he has been wrong plenty of other nights. This night changed Kanye West’s relationship to popular culture and stretched the racial tension and gender dynamics between Black men and white women further.
All that came to head on The Life of Pablo’s “Famous”, where he says; “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/I made that bitch famous.”
3. Outkast Proclaims “The South Got Something to Say”
Just thirty years ago, people above the Mason Dixon Line didn’t take Southern rap seriously. Even after Andre 3000 proclaimed that “the South had something to say” at the 1995 Source Awards, people didn’t think Southern rap was the graceful ballet that East Coast rap was.
That was dumb, considering that UGK and Outkast were at their peak at the same time. At the Source Awards, Andre put the whole rap map on notice, and the South hasn’t looked back since. Some now consider Atlanta the capital of hip-hop.
2. DJ Kool Herc Hosts His “Back to School Jam”
On Aug. 11, 1973, 18-year-old DJ Kool Herc threw a “Back to School Jam” for his sister Cindy in the South Bronx — in the rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. What was intended as a neighborhood celebration changed the course of music, as Herc unveiled a new technique involving looping the drum and percussion breaks from his record collection. In an instant, two of the foundational elements of hip-hop came together in an utterly unique way. Herc invented “the break” by using two turntables – and two copies of the same album – to extend a song’s instrumental, which was often its most highly percussive portion. During these sections, he’d invite dancers to improvise over the beats, leading to the birth of breakdancing. Hip-hop soon exploded in the Bronx and beyond, and though Herc’s own music never became as well-known as other genre pioneers, his skills as a host and DJ created rap music as we know it.
August 11 is now Hip-Hop Celebration Day and International Hip-Hop Day.

Pac was dynamic at rapping. He could have sounded like he was from anywhere. He rapped with vigor instead of a sniper’s accuracy. He was his own creation. On the other hand, Biggie once rapped “I’m seeing body after body and the Mayor Giulaini ain’t trying to see a Black man turn to John Gotti.” On hit singles like “Mo Money Mo Problems,” he alludes to federal agents tapping his phones. Notorious bent the line between street politics and pop music.
When we lost these men, hip-hop lost two generational talents that had feuded with each other for no reason. Hip-hop was on the precipice of taking over the globe, and has become the premier musical genre for an entire generation. When you think of what they could have done peacefully coexisting, their murders seem all that much more tragic.

Doc’s Castle Media had the opportunity to leave our regularly scheduled program to experience something we’re very familiar with outside of our comfort zone last weekend. Doc attended a hip-hop showcase in New York City, and there’s so much to be mentioned about why my experience out of town is worthy of being shared with Baltimore city hip-hop heads.
The Inauguration Concert was hosted my Rockview Entertainment, an independent entertainment group in NYC that specializes in the branding of New York City music artists. Taina and Jus Write are two New York artist of the brand’s roster that came to the showcase that evening. A majority of the Rockview Entertainment events feature local talent from all over NYC. But some artists travel from farther distances to perform.
As a part of the entourage for Baltimore recording artist Jae Duckett, I came to work my talent covering the event by taking photos and experiencing the essence of the show. We came with a total of 9 people. All of us bearing cameras and media equipment in support Jae. We did this to show the people of the big apple how we roll. We go hard for Baltimore. But do we really?
I wasn’t the only media present at the Inauguration Concert. There were three internet radio shows present; Lyve Lyfe Radio, WVMR, and Baltimore’s own Strong Way Radio. But what took the icing on the cake was Shani Kulture from Hot 97 dropping by in full support of the showcase, as well.

Shani Kulture delivered a message of positivity that was well needed. He encouraged each and every artist’s’ passion for what they do. Coming from someone currently working in mainstream media with large notoriety, encouragement felt like it had come spewing from the fountain of youth. There’s no doubt admiration was projected at it’s finest from prospective talent in the audience that night.
The evening was full of energy and driven individuals. Simply off the atmosphere alone, you’d feel good about what you’re apart of, which is why I needed to write about this particular showcase for Doc’s Castle Media.
Where are these type of shows in Baltimore that have this energy?
Not to knock Baltimore too much, there are plenty of notable showcases and shows that receive a good amount of support from locals; like TheMixx Festival hosted by DTLR and The 2nd Anniversary of Baltimore Beat Club hosted by The Lineup Room. We even have shows like Baltimore Crown Awards that celebrate the successes of artists striving to share their passions in the city. But there are many shows that are “ghost,” without even a handful of spectators insight. Baltimore lacks the artist at the shows showing brotherly genuine support. I always ask why is it this way?
If Baltimore could take just a pinch of energy felt that night at the Inauguration Concert, I’d know it’d be another proud moment and a step forward towards the #NewBaltimore that we idolize in 2014 when there was buzz in the atmosphere of a new generation of artists changing how we celebrate indie artists in Baltimore. If we gained the energy felt during the Rockview Ent. show, we might actually have a chance to climb out of the barrels this city seems to be too familiar with.
If I were to suggest some things that happened in New York that Baltimore artists should invest in doing, there wouldn’t be much I’d need to share. Simply to show up and show out for your friends is all that’s needed to be done.
Each artist in the building that night came with an entourage of supportive friends. Similar to attending a high energy sporting event, all friends cheered on their artist like no other. The night started off with each group of friends showing love solely for who they came for. But by the end of the night, the love shown spread into a huge circle of love. Everyone became one, with the help of the evening’s special guest Shani Kulture encouraging everyone to support all of their peers. He reminded the audience that performing in front of strangers isn’t easy. These artists had the courage to entertain the room. Shani basically told us to show our respect and listen to them.
Maybe artists in Baltimore don’t understand that concept of support at all. We ask our friends to come to our shows and end up partying with strangers. Every time we get to a point when we feel like we’re crawling away from the barrel of constant hate, we get pulled back in by those who are the closest to us. Trying to gain support in Baltimore is a never ending battle familiar to anyone who wants to pursue a dream.
“We are better off moving to another state to get ahead,” says a majority of dreamers spotted in the Baltimore arts scene. They say it as if other cities, like Atlanta, GA, and Los Angeles, are the chosen “mecca” lands, getaway places for serenity and peace, for their passions and talents.
This is not so if we’d just support everyone where we are.
Otherwise, my surroundings in NYC made me hopeful to see a concert like the Inauguration Concert replicated in my hometown. There were enough Baltimore natives there to experience the night’s vibes. Hopefully, those people can spread its essence somehow, or maybe I could be reaching.

T.Eric Monroe is a master of being at the right place at the right time, and even more importantly, was prepared to do whatever it took to make the most of those opportunities. As a photographer, he captured some of the most iconic hip-hop moments of the 1990s, only to later realize the magnitude of that place in time. T. Eric has been digitizing his catalog recently and just published a new book, Rare & Unseen Moments of 90s HipHop, showcasing images from publications like Thrasher Magazine, The Source, XXL, and a host of other publications.

On his personal blog, T. Eric Monroe speaks on the first part of his book “RARE & UNSEEN MOMENTS OF 90'S HIPHOP” and tells his story on spending a day in New York with Tupac Shakur in 1994, starting with some background of the day.

“I received a call from Tupac's publicist (Interscope Records), asking if I wanted to photograph Tupac in Harlem" Eric Monroe reveals. "He was having a press day and being filmed for music video channel, The Box. The format of the segment, Box Talk, was that camera crews would follow the artist around their childhood neighborhood. They would then shoot a particular segment in front of a location meaningful to the artist.” Monroe shares.

“When I arrived at the location (155th Street & St. Nicholas Avenue), not far from Yankee Stadium, it was chaos. Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. had just dropped the prior year and 'Pac was already a household name. Everyone wanted a piece of him as he had recently released the album Thug Life: Volume 1. Magazine and newspaper photographers, The Box camera crew, and local news teams were yelling at Tupac to look at their cameras.”

“I watched it for a while, then slowly got out my camera and moved toward some of the action. I was relatively close to Tupac and I kept to certain angles so I would not be intrusive in ‘Pac’s space. The connection became more endearing. At times, both of us looked at each other and quietly laughed at the media circus around us.”

“I was able to capture a personal vibe among Tupac and his friends — guys from the groups Thug Life and the Outlawz," Eric Monroe says. "After the main taping was done, the news cameras started to leave. The bulk of the news press got the shots they needed to portray Tupac as the “Dangerous Thug,” which they would print in the next day’s papers. It felt like Tupac knew how to play with the media to keep his name in the press. “As more people left, Tupac and his friends stayed to themselves, lingering by one of the walls within the city park where filming had just concluded. They created a space and moment to relax together. Within that time, Tupac would peer beyond the edge of his red bandana, which dangled in front of his eyelash as he prepared a blunt. As he finished, he kindly glanced at me. I got the shots I needed. I heard the lighter spark as I stepped away, giving them their personal space.”

Another interesting story from T. Eric and his work-related with Tupac’s name takes us back in 1995 when he was working at The Source.
In an interview with juxtapoz.com, Monroe shares details of how the media was handling the story of Tupac and Faith Evans, which is developing even now.

“As time at the Source moved forward and the editor became more intolerable, things finally came to a head for me after a final draft of the Tupac article that was to run in ‘96 Tupac cover issue. In the article I remember reading something about Tupac slept with Faith, Biggie’s wife. I said to the editor, you’re not going to run this, are you? He said, “Yeah, B, people gotta hear this!” I responded, “You can’t put out energy like this, it will cause too many issues.” He said,”Nah, people gotta know.” At that point, I knew I was done working there on staff. A few months later, Tupac was killed. Not by Biggie’s people, but the negative energy allowed to build (in my mind).”

HBD DJ Qbert! 🎉🎉🎉 Richard Quitevis known by his stage name DJ Qbert or Qbert, is a Filipino American turntablist and composer. Qbert started his musical career in a group called FM20 with Mix Master Mike and DJ Apollo in 1990. In New York City when playing a show, Crazy Legs saw them and invited them to join the Rock Steady Crew. They accepted the offer to join the crew. Going by the name Rock Steady DJs, they then proceeded to take the 1992 DMC world title. Qbert was also one of the founding members of the band Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Although there were other turntablist crews before the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, the Skratch Piklz were the first to apply the band concept to turntablism, layering drums, basslines, and scratch solos on top of each other. Qbert, along with other Skratch Piklz, created a series of videos entitled Turntable TV. Now out of print, the first 5 episodes were released on VHS and contained demonstrations, showcases, skits, and other DJ related content. Qbert's solo efforts include 1994's Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik, and 1998's Wave Twisters. The latter album was created mainly with samplers and beat machines versus the turntable, and later turned into an animated feature of the same title. More recently, he has worked with Vestax to develop the QFO, an all-in-one scratching instrument. The QFO combines a turntable with a mixer's crossfader. In 2006, he introduced the Qbert turntable cartridge, a model put out by Ortofon. In May, 2009, Qbert launched the Qbert Skratch University, an interactive online learning school and community for DJs through the ArtistWorks website. Fans Think Megan Thee Stallion Will Open For Cardi B On An Upcoming Tour

Ever since a string of vicious freestyles went viral late last year and early this year, the buzz for Megan Thee Stallion as rap’s next big thing has been gaining momentum, which has generated its own buzz that she would soon come into conflict with reigning rap queen Cardi B — because, of course as soon as a new woman built up a little hype, sexist rap fans would pit the two against each other. However, Cardi deftly sidestepped the trap skeptics laid out for herself and the rambunctious newcomer, adding her to the roster of an upcoming show in upstate New York that has prompted speculation of an entirely different kind.
Cardi announced the show on April 1, but rather than an April Fool’s joke, it turned out to be a May 25 showcase with guests City Girls, Nicole Bus, and Teyana Taylor called Femme It Forward. However, once the Live Nation link for tickets went live, fans received a welcome surprise: Megan’s name is included among those listed on the bill for the show at St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse.
Now, fans have begun breathlessly hypothesizing that the show in New York is just the precursor to an entire Femme It Forward tour that would bring Megan and City Girls along with Cardi when she inevitably heads out on the road later this year. It would certainly be one of the most touted all-female rosters in recent history; Cardi, City Girls, and Megan Thee Stallion have all generated huge buzz for their racy, energetic singles in the past year, with Cardi winning a Best Rap Album Grammy, City Girls’ “Twerk” featuring Cardi running rampant on the charts and “Act Up” Challenge doing the same in the streets, and anticipation building for Megan’s Fever EP, due out April 12.
For now, though, only two shows have been confirmed: The May 25 one in Syracuse and another in Saratoga Springs at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on May 26. Tickets go on sale April 5 for both shows. Meanwhile, Cardi and Megan were also announced as part of Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam lineup for this year.
