Kid Icarus Uprising VS New Light Myth: Palutena's Mirror Regional Differences

Chapter 1 - The Return of Palutena -

Air Battle - Part 1

Welcome to the start of a series where I will compare the dialogue of KI:U and NLM:PM. Like always English is taken from Linkstsr and Japanese is translated by Milkyflare.

The reason for this series is to compare the regional differences between ENG and JPN, and to see the difference in character and to have an easy access to the dialogue side by side. I'll also have a little bit of commentary for most.

I will also refer to characters by their English names for KI:U, and Japanese Names for NLM:PM.

Since there is a 30 photo limit, I'll be dividing these posts into sections, Air battle Part 1 and 2 and Land Battle for Chapter.

Now, without further ado. Here's the differences.

KI:U

Pit, with his hands clasp together:

NLM:PM

Pitto, with his fist towards the sky:

Sorry for the wait!

Already we have different sprites, though the dialogue is essentially the same. While both are apologising, Pitto is definitely ready to go.

It's our first outing in a while, isn't it Palutena-sama?

Palutena-sama, in her straightforward pose:

Pit, go forth and do your best.

Lady Palutena (KI:U) is already cutting straight to the chase whereas Palutena-sama (NLM:PM) encourages Pitto a bit. Right now (and further on) we can see how different Palutena is in both version. The Pits both remark it's been a while, Pitto conveys that it has been a while.

Lady Palutena cuts to the chase again, taking the situation seriously. Whilst Palutena-sama is a lot more relaxed, which is most evident by her sprites. The Pits are both suprised, though they portray their disbelief differently, Pit being a bit more witty, and Pitto already thinking about the implications.

You can target enemies with the stylus.

Using the touch pen, You can also aim at the enemies

There's even a difference when explaining controls. Both are straightforward until explaining aim, in which Palutena-sama changes sprites.

That seems is to be the case

Once again, the Pits express their disbelief differently, with Pit not daring to finish his thought while Pitto seeks clarification. Lady Palutena is taking it very seriously, being as straightforward as she can. Palutena-sama gives both herself and Pitto a moment.

Though the goddess of darkness was defeated long ago, she's back now.

Cerainly, Medusa was defeated with the "Three Sacred Treasures"

But, after all, she is the goddess of the Underworld...

Lady Palutena's "long ago" makes it sound like a fairy tale. Also draws attention to the fact its her "duty" to protect humans from Medusa. An interesting view on her role.

Palutena-sams's "after all" feels like a cop-out answer for Medusa's return, giving the players a 'reason' for Medusa return but not explaining.

KI:U

Ahahahaha, Medusa's nothing to be afraid of!!

What's interesting here is that we get to see the Palutenas' poses for when explaining Medusa. Both are in a thinking pose, but while Lady Palutena gives an expression of apathy, Palutena-sama is more concerned/worried.

Kid Icarus trailer

My take on a live-action Kid Icarus movie trailer, partially inspired by the second trailer for Captain America: the First Avenger.

(Open on Pit, looking much like he did in Of Myths and Monsters[albeit drawn in Uprisingstyle], riding alongside Palutena in her chariot. As they pass a building with ‘Gymnasium’ written over the door, Pit perks up, brushing hair out of his face.)

Pit: I’ve been to that place. The other boys who went there liked to use me to practice their fighting skills.

(Cut to Pit inside the gymnasium, surrounded by several bigger angels. One of them holds Pit in a half nelson as he forces him to the ground. Cut back to Pit and Palutena.)

Palutena: You never tried to run?

Pit: Once you start running, you won’t be able to stop.

(Shot of the Nintendo logo. Cut to Pit standing outside a colosseum with a tall, black-haired young man: Pit’s longtime friend Anter.)

Anter: Are you trying to get yourself killed?

Pit: I can’t just stand by and do nothing!

(Cut to Pit standing alongside several other young men, some angels and some not. Viridi is pacing back and forth in front of them, while Arlon stands off to the side.)

Viridi: Our goal is to create a new kind of soldier.

(Shots of Pit trying to keep up with the other cadets as they train.)

Viridi: Better, faster, and stronger than any ordinary angel.

(Shot of Pit tackling another cadet to the ground as a Bumpety Bomb comes hurtling towards them, involuntarily spreading his wings as he uses his own body as a shield. Shot of Pit and the cadet, both unharmed, sitting up with surprised expressions. Viridi, standing next to the dummy bomb, gives a thumbs up to Arlon. Cut to Arlon strapping a shirtless Pit to a large pillar by his wrists and ankles.)

Arlon (v/o): No matter how much you change on the outside...

(Shot of Phosphora using her electrical abilities to charge a device shaped like a pair of wings made of silver. Viridi and Palutena use their own powers to each charge a similar device. Pit shuts his eyes and braces himself as each of the three devices fires a beam at a large mirror hanging directly above pit. The mirror collects the energy before redirecting it downward, enveloping Pit in a column of multicolored light.)

Arlon (v/o): ...stay who you truly are within.

(Cut to Pit, now with his proper Uprising appearance, pulling himself to his feet. Palutena approaches with a fresh tunic, helping Pit steady himself. Shot of a Reaper making a gesture to someone offscreen. Shot of an explosion, which shatters the mirror. While Pit and Palutena are unharmed, Arlon is hit by several shards, a large one impaling him. Cut to Pit grabbing the Reaper by the collar.)

Pit: Who are you?

Reaper: The first of many...

(Shot of Pit catching his breath before gazing at his hands in wonder. Cut to Medusa leaning over a sarcophagus, her back to the camera. Shot of several Underworld Army troopers standing at attention. Shot of Medusa, looking as she did before her transformation into a gorgon, glaring at the Eggplant Wizard and Great Reaper disdainfully.)

Viridi (v/o): Medusa thinks she can usurp Hades, and she’s willing to destroy half the Overworld to prove it.

(Cut to Pit perched on a cliff overlooking the Reaper Fortress, the Mirror Shield in his hands. He slides the shield onto one arm before diving off the cliff, gliding down to the Fortress entrance. Cut to Pit standing on one side of a ravine, with Anter a short distance behind him. Medusa stands on the other side, Pandora hovering close by in ‘ghost flame’ form.)

Medusa: You and I have more in common than you think.

(She grabs her neck, peeling away the face mask to reveal her Uprisingappearance. Anter recoils in horror, but Pit simply holds up the Mirror Shield. Cut to Pit and Palutena in the latter’s temple, Pit seated on the floor while Palutena kneels beside him.)

Pit: I don’t think I can do this. Not alone.

Palutena: You won’t have to. Because you’re not alone.

(Shots of Pit, Anter, Magnus, Gaol, Phosphora, and Pyrrhon striking several Underworld Army bases. Shot of Pit in free fall as Palutena and Phosphora watch. Without warning, his wings open and he soars upward before disappearing into a cloud of fog. Shot of Pit being restrained by two Zurees as Medusa leans over him.)

Medusa: What makes you so special?

(Pit just shrugs, then kicks one of the Zurees in the stomach. The Zuree lets go of Pit’s arm, allowing the angel to slam the Mirror Shield into the other Zuree’s face. Shot of Pit flying above Twinbellows, notching an arrow. Cut to title card.)

Kid Icarus

(Cut to Pandora in her laboratory, hovering before an enormous mirror. Two Daphnes enter, carrying the barely alive form of Anter. Pandora takes out two vials of liquid—one silver white, the other dark purple—and pours the contents of both onto the mirror. A black glow surrounds the mirror as the Daphnes fly over and place their captive inside, the surface rippling like water. Pandora cackles wickedly as the unconscious Anter, whose features are changing to make him resemble Pit, begins to sprout black-feathered wings from his back.)
