Princess Aminah of Johor's Yellow Diamond Tiara

This tiara was made by Singapore based jeweler, Royal Insignia, for Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah to wear to her wedding in August 2017. It features a cushion cut yellow diamond along with pear, marquise, and emerald cut white diamonds set in white gold.

Princess Aminah's father, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar of Johor, was sworn in as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong aka King of Malaysia today so I hope to see this tiara worn more in the future.

[Bundos Bansil Fara] is one of the three Tboli artists who were recognized as Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) or National Living Treasures in December 2023. The award is given to Filipinos whose “distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation.” … This is the first time a brass caster has been awarded since the GAMABA’s inception in 1992.

Brass casting is a skill learnt from one’s forebears, and Fara’s father and grandfather were all metalworkers. “I started in the process of brass casting when I was eight years old,” Fara says. Now 58, he has been working with molten materials for half a century. “My eyesight has gotten blurry.” Fortunately, he has a team of four sons working with him—one will be melting the wax, a mixture of beeswax, candle wax, and asphalt that forms a black putty; another will be tending to the blazing hot fires, fanning coals inside two holes in the ground, one for melting the metals, another for firing the clay molds.

Ginton is the Tboli god of metallurgy and the son of the supreme being Dwata. It is believed that he gifted the people with brass anklets, chain belts, rings, and swords—all of which still intricately adorn, protect, and tell the story of the Tboli today. As for the beginnings of brass, Fr. Gabriel Casal notes in his book T’Boli Art in its Socio-Cultural Context (1977), “The T’bolis give no indication of having ever possessed any knowledge of mining their own metals. These, they seem to have always obtained from old broken agong (gongs) or any of their other metal objects that break, and which they melt and re-employ for new substitutes.”

The recycling/upcycling of metals is still how Fara and other brass casters source their materials today. “We would melt down old gongs to create new items, but now there are many other things we can find at the junk shop, like padlocks, bullet shells, pipes.” The products they make are not strictly made of brass, but an alloy of brass, bronze, steel, and whatever else can be liquified in Fara’s smoldering hot pot.

If you haven't been following Malaysia's GE15 results here is what has happened and is happening.

Right now PH has more seats than the other coalitions but not the majority amount needed to form the government (need 112 or more). PN has the 2nd most seats while BN has a few and GTA had none. Rest went to solo parties or independent candidates.

In order to form a new government PH and PN will have to negotiate with BN and/or any other party that has at least 30 seats. PH says they have found parties/independents who are willing to work with them and that they therefore have the majority needed to form the govt provided the Agong recognises the alliance. PN says PH is bluffing and that they have the majority because they are allies with GPS and BN.

Both parties are going to submit their evidence/claims to the Agong today. Many Malaysians are afraid that despite PH leading in terms of sheer number of votes (indicating that despite having only 70+ seats due to jerry-mandering they are the people's choice) that PH will lose to PN.

Agong's Abdication Tomorrow

Malaysia and the world will witness the abdication of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin tomorrow, January 30th, 2024. His Majesty's five-year reign will come to an end, and the new Agong, Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, will ascend the throne the following day.

The entire people of Malaysia and the Malay Archipelago would offer prayers for His Majesty's long life and good health, seeking divine blessings in return for his wise and merciful leadership during his reign. His Majesty's contributions will never be forgotten.
