Neopets is so funny right now. It's a 24-year-old website and half its pages haven't been updated in 15 years. Its ostensible audience is children. The core active audience appears to be nostalgic 20-40-year-olds. Old code means no accounts or pets can ever be renamed. The virtual pound is full of virtual pets named after Justin Bieber. It has an economy and inflation is rampant. New ownership is combating this with the stimulus of random super-rare items via daily quests and events, while the equivalent of Neopian Upper-Crust complain that their investments are deflating. You can't say seaweed or grapes.

I occasionally see people expressing surprise that there's battling on Neopets so let me explain the Battledome(TM) real quick:

There is PvP on Neopets

You can also unlock and fight various NPC challengers

There have historically been literal war events where the main goal is to defeat as many challengers as possible

Sometimes at the end of plots TNT will toss an obscenely hard boss bottle at the players where the main objective is to loose as many times as possible

You don't increase your stats by battling, but instead giving rocks to a guy on an island

You can only increase 1 stat at a time, and only about 1 stat per day if you're far enough in your pet's training

You do damage by equipping weapons, which can do damage via icons or block icons for defense

There are thousands of weapons on the site

About 5% of the weapons are decent

Two of the top-rated weapons are peas

The peas cost upward of 100 mil a piece

The attack animation consists of sliding a png of your Neopet across the screen

There's a new weapon called the Power of Friendship

You can now defeat your enemies on Neopets with the Power of Friendship

People either take the Battledome entirely too seriously or not at all, there's no in-between

There's a punching bag that you can beat up at any time because it doesn't fight back

Back in ye olden days the punching bag would sometimes be replaced with a slightly different punching bag that not only fought back but was one of the stronger opponents

There's two items that you can use in PvP that change the species and color of your opponent's Neopet because this site thrives on chaos

The plot kicking off being delayed to the advent calendar instead of the negg festival is so funny because Orion going to Kari and Mira about his visions makes sense they are faeries and Mira is the space faerie, shes is in charge of all space based threats, that's who you go to about a space monster but Reina whats she gonna do????

massive shoutout to Sophie from Neopets. for those who don't know she escaped a small Victorian town when she was young and grew up to be a witch who lives in a swamp with approximately 17 Meowclops who curses anything that mildly annoys her. she teams up with her brother and a small woodland orphan to fix the town and then goes right back to living in the swamp. girlboss
