Swipe up in my story to learn more about this beauty. #KevynAucoinBeautygiftedme @kevynaucoin @sephora #NeoHighlighter #KevynAucoinBeauty #OctolyFamily If you are looking for a warm bronzy glow I suggest checking out the beautiful Neo Highlighter in "Sierra" by the wonderful Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. Multidimensional highly pigmented shades ranging in three different warm shades that can be used all over the body. I love the size of the pan they chose because it really give you the option to work either the entire share range into one for an all over warmer glow or to use each individually for more direct application on your cheekbones, brow bone or even shadows. This is going to be perfect for spring and summer to really warm up my complexion entirely for a more natural healthy glow than an obvious mega watt highlight. If you love a more natural looking glow you will love this!!! #EmilyDoll #TheDoll #BeautyBlogger #beautyreviews #highlighter #glow https://www.instagram.com/p/BvJ9i1ugfnL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w267inp37gam

Test Drives: Rose Gold with Smashbox, Deck of Scarlet, Kevyn Aucoin & Rimmel London
So I’m rolling out a new post theme, “Test Drives”, which will focus on a #motd (makeup of the day) beauty look centered around new items (either gifted by brands or that I’ve purchased). In addition to showing you a wearable makeup look, I’ll also provide a review on any new product(s) used to create the look. To kick it off, I’m reviewing a few items that I’ve received in the last few months that I lightly featured via swatches or a roundup on here or on Instagram, but never really used. For today’s look I wanted to offer a neutral and a bold effect focused around rose gold - a metallic shade that’s been hot for a while and shows no signs of slowing down especially in the bridal beauty space. To create this look, I decided to use some new items: Smashbox’s Full Exposure eye shadow palette, Deck of Scarlet Edition No 7 x Roxette Arissa March/April palette, Kevyn Aucoin’s PrisMagic Highlighting Trio palette, Rimmel London Lasting Finish Breathable Concealer in Dark and Rimmel’s Insta Duo Contouring Stick in Dark. All of these were gifted by the brand or through an event I attended. All other items I used to create these looks will be listed at the end of the post. So, let’s get to it!
For starters, I love the idea of a nice rose gold makeup look that’s wearable. To be honest, I’m not a fan of over-the-top Instagram style makeup because it’s based on theatrical, cabaret style makeup tricks. It’s great for editorial or performance, but unless you’re working behind a MAC makeup counter or on stage, it’s not realistic for every day wear. Likewise, flip through any bridal magazine and it’s rare to see models or brides rocking Instagram style makeup. So, my preference is something more subtle and “wearable”. By that I mean, something that has a bit more of a timeless look that will still look good years from now and a makeup look that you can actually wear on a regular day without looking like a reject from RuPaul’s Drag Race (no shade to those queens because they do awesome makeup tricks - but it’s theatrical effect makeup!).
Deck of Scarlet Edition No 7 x Roxette Arissa March/April Palette
I featured this palette set on my IG earlier. This is actually a full face palette with shadow, highlight and blush as well as lip and eye liner (not reviewed today). So I intended for this to be the central anchor of the look I wanted to create today because I loved how it offered some great neutral shades across shadows and lips. My goal had been to use the Bronzed metallic shade (top right pan) on my outer corner. But since I used my Pixi Beauty ItsEyeTime palette (right in lower pic) for the rose gold (Getaway) on my lower lid and the matte rosy shade (Brick) on my upper lid/brow bone, they somewhat cancelled out the DoS Bronzed. To re-emphasize my outer corner, I ended up adding Solas from my Kat Von D Shade & Light Eye Contour palette. However, even having said that, I do love the creaminess of Deck of Scarlet’s palette. And I love that the eye shadow pans are great neutrals in a matte and metallic option with an accent turquoise shade which can be used as an under eye liner to offer a pop of color. I’ll do swatches on Instagram shortly of this palette!
Smashbox Full Exposure Eyeshadow Palette
Smashbox has a cult following and for good reason. Now I attended a Birchbox event right before Christmas and this was in my gift bag. I’ve used Smashbox in the past and I love the pigmentation of their shadows as well as their longevity. I used the lower matte taupe shade (left in pic above) as a base. Looking back, I realized after the fact that it was a near perfect dupe to the neutral taupe shade from the DoS x Roxette Arissa palette. So, looking back, I could have skipped adding Smashbox to today’s Test Drive article. However, I do like that this is a palette full of neutrals which for me is ideal as I normally don’t wear super colorful shadows.
Rimmel London Lasting Finish Breathable Concealer in Dark
Of everything I tested today this was the most exciting one. Now, I swatched this concealer along with another shade that the brand sent me in a previous post. Originally, in my first impressions post I wasn’t enthusiastic about this concealer. I was concerned that the texture was too runny and would settle in my fine lines under my eyes or that the dark shade would be too dark for me to use to conceal anything. However, my fears were unnecessary. The texture is runnier than my usual LA Girl HD Pro Conceal or Kevyn Aucoin. However, my fears were totally unnecessary! The Rimmel concealer covered my under eye perfectly and even after applying my Laura Mercier setting powder, it didn’t settle in fine lines. My only gripe about this product (which I mentioned in the previous swatch post) is that the shade I used is the darkest shade available and the next lightest shade is a good 5 shades lighter which means a lot of skin tones are ignored. I don’t know that I would use this every day because the runnier texture isn’t ideal. But it’s a good backup to my usual favorite concealers.
Rimmel’s Insta Duo Contouring Stick in Dark
This came in over the weekend and I was actually pretty hyped to test this one. It’s a fairly straight forward product where you can contour and highlight via a dual ended cream stick applicator. The reason I was hyped is because anything that minimizes the number of brushes/applicators I need to use is always welcome. I hadn’t planned to use the highlight side as I wanted to highlight with rosy shades to compliment the rose gold #motd. Now, I can contour with powder or creams so I don’t personally have a preference. With my initial swatch I did on the back of my hand, I was hyped because the contour side looked like it would be dark enough without being too dark (as I don’t like a heavy contour). But, when I applied it to my face (after having done foundation, concealer & setting powder), the dark shade practically blended in with my face - making the contour nonexistent. Womp Womp. I ended up using my Elf Cosmetics Aqua Beauty Blush & Bronzer duo. Sadly, the shade I was given was the darkest shade Rimmel offers. So once again, darker skin tones from slightly lighter than me to much darker have been ignored. *sigh*
Kevyn Aucoin’s PrisMagic Highlighting Trio palette
I swatched this palette late last month and was definitely a fan as it offered high wattage glitter and some pretty complimentary shades in an iridescent purple, orange and green. I opted to use the purple shade Aura in place of my usual purple highlight Ibiza from Kevyn Aucoin. PrisMagic offers a much stronger color concentration than their Neolights/NeoHighlights category. Aura is much stronger than Ibiza as a highlight - offering a clearly visible purple cast that isn’t as “in your face” with Ibiza. I love it, but it’s strong so use sparingly unless you really want to go for a strong purple effect.
Final Thoughts:
In general, I was happy with the palettes and the concealer. Creamy stay put shadows are always fan favorites for me.
But I can’t ignore the lack of shade representation from brands for deeper skin tones - especially when drugstore brands want to compete with e-com, higher end or pro-MUA focused makeup brands. I’m not against buying makeup from drugstore brands but I don’t make it my first stop because of the frustrations I often have with them. It’s a known fact that women of color (and specifically black women if we just focus on the US market) are the biggest spenders of discretionary income in the global beauty economy. So, the fact that those of us who are #teambrownskin can find ourselves playing Russian Roulette when it comes to buying cosmetics in our local drug stores is infuriating. I am clearly a woman of color, but by no means one of the darkest shades a brand should accommodate when it comes to foundations or concealers. But if you’re ending your color range around my tone, as a brand you’re LITERALLY leaving money on the table. In 2018, I shouldn’t feel like a brand is not an option for me if that brand is selling in the United States. When I go to Japan and can’t find my shade in foundations or concealers, I get it. But if I’m Stateside, I’m just annoyed.
