Egypt has declared the latest round of talks with Ethiopia over the latter’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on a tributary of the Nile River to be over without agreement. It accused Ethiopia of negotiating in bad faith over the shared waterway and said it would defend its national and water security.

Egypt's attempt to reimpose the colonial era agreement on water sharing and make water distribution a main agenda in the tripartite negotiations on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have made the negotiation fail, Trans-boundary rivers and water diplomacy advisor Fakahmed Negash said.[...]

The trans-boundary rivers and water diplomacy expert noted that Ethiopia has been reflecting the idea which focuses on fair utilization of the dam and mutual development. On the other hand, Egypt raises the agenda which enables it to use the water alone, he noted. Therefore, Egypt's unwillingness to accept the principle of give and take and diplomacy has made previous negotiations, including the recent one, fail.[...]

He stressed that Egypt's desire to put the burden of drought compensation on Ethiopia alone is unprincipled and outside the international experience of resisting drought together. On the other hand, Egypt's unilateral request for release of 40 billion cubic meters of water from the dam is a ploy to delay the dam's water filling and construction.

Chemours / DuPont lijkt al decennialang te weten dat de stoffen die dit bedrijf in bodem, lucht en water loost zeer schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid en het milieu en te zwijgen over de risico’s. Op dit moment lopen er juridische procedures tegen het bedrijf. ChristenUnie Zuid-Holland heeft in Provinciale Staten het initiatief genomen om een hoorzitting te organiseren, met steun van SP, PvdA, GroenLinks, SGP, CDA, PvdD, D66, Volt, VVD en BBB. Als vergunningverlener is de provincie direct betrokken bij dit dossier. Schokkende onthullingen door Zembla Adem Mustafa Negash, Statenlid PvdA Zuid-Holland: "De schokkende onthullingen na de recente Zembla-uitzending tonen aan dat Chemours al decennia op de hoogte was van de giftige vervuiling die de gezondheid en levenskwaliteit van onze gemeenschap bedreigde. Als PvdA staan we nu zij aan zij met de getroffen inwoners, vastberaden om transparantie af te dwingen en een toekomst te bouwen waarin gezondheid en milieu boven zwijgende belangen staan. We moeten naar 'nul uit de pijp'. Bovendien dringen we aan op verantwoordelijkheid van vervuilende industrieën voor saneringen en het vergoeden van aangerichte schade." Chemours op de agenda houden Marieke Spekreijse, Statenlid GroenLinks Zuid-Holland: “als GroenLinks zorgen we er al jarenlang voor dat Chemours op de agenda staat. Het is schandalig dat Chemours nog steeds loost. De stilte vanuit dit bedrijf moet doorbroken worden. Ze moeten ten eerste volledig stoppen met de uitstoot van giftige stoffen. Ten tweede moeten zij nu echt verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor het aangerichte leed en de schade. De inwoners van Zuid-Holland hebben recht op schoon drinkwater en zonder zorgen te kunnen zwemmen. Wij zullen hiervoor blijven strijden, net zo lang tot er ‘nul uit de pijp’ is.” Hoorzitting De hoorzitting vindt plaats op vrijdagochtend 1 september van 9:00-12:00 uur in het stadhuis in Dordrecht, is openbaar en wordt uitgezonden via de webcast van de provincie Zuid-Holland. Omwonenden, lokale bestuurders, omgevingsdienst en Chemours zullen hun verhaal doen. Statenleden kunnen vragen stellen aan de verschillende sprekers. Doel van de hoorzitting is het voorbereiden van het debat over Chemours in Statencommissie Klimaat, Natuur en Milieu op 6 september. Students at Gwinnett County’s Sweetwater Middle are receiving a standing ovation across the state after their recent award-winning performances. The school’s theatre arts students, known as The Sweetwater Players, recently received the top award during the Elaine Kottler Memorial North Georgia Middle School One-Act Play Festival. They performed Alice in Wonderland, stealing the show by earning a superior ranking and winning the overall festival.

In addition, Sweetwater Middle’s student performers also earned the following group and individual awards during the North Georgia festival.

    ·        Best Ensemble

   ·        Best Costumes and Make-up

   ·        Best Actors: Omar Gray and Dwight Taylor

   ·        Best Actress: Rainy Broderick

   ·        Best Supporting Actress: Kayla Pontiff

   ·        All-Star Cast: Lonnie Williams and Andrew Witter

The Sweetwater Players also took top honors with their performance during the statewide festival. At the Kottler Memorial State One-Act Competition, the students also ranked superior and took 2nd place. The Sweetwater Players also received the following awards in this state competition. 

   ·        Best Actor: Negash Desta, Omar Gray, and Dwight Taylor

   ·        All-Star Cast: Diana Koye

Come next semester, the award-winning Sweetwater Players will begin preparations for their spring musical, Guys & Dolls, Jr., and the spring talent show. The talent show will take place April 15, 2011, at the Sweetwater Middle cafeteria. The students are scheduled to perform Guys & Dolls, Jr. May 13th and 14th.
