ITS THE LATE WALLY PARKS BIRTHDAY TODAY THE FOUNDER OF THE NHRA THAT STANDS FOR THE NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION FOR DRAG RACING. WALLY WAS BORN IN GOLTRY, OKLAHOMA ON JANUARY 23, 1913. WALLY WAS A CAR HOBBYIST AND AN AUTOMOTIVE WRITER FOR HOT ROD MAGAZINE IN THE 1940S. WALLY FORMED THE NHRA IN MAY OF 1951 TO ESTABLISH A SPORT FOR DRAG RACING. WALLY S NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION WAS TO BE A LEGITIMATE AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL SPORT FOR ORGANIZED DRAG RACING. TODAY WALLY S NHRA IS THE LARGEST MOTORSPORT ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD. THE NHRA HAS OVER 18 CLASSES IN PRO AND AMATEUR RACING CLASSES FOR RACERS TO RACE EACH YEAR FOR POINTS AND PRIZE MONEY. THE EVENT WINNER OF A NATIONAL OR A DIVISIONAL NHRA RACE IN EACH CLASS RECEIVES TROPHY THAT IS NAMED AFTER WALLY PARKS "THE WALLY" A STANDING TROPHY OF WALLY NEXT TO DRAGSTER TIRE. THE SAFETY IS ALWAYS CONCERN IN DRAG RACING AND IN THE EARLY DAYS OF DRAG RACING IT WAS LIMITED BEFORE WALLY CAME ALONG AND REALIZED A LOT OF HIS FRIENDS AND FELLOW RACERS WERE GETTING INTO ACCIDENTS SINCE THE CARS WERE GOING QUICKER AND QUICKER DOWN THE QUARTER MILE. WALLY PARKS STARTED TO LEARN ABOUT WHY THE PROBLEMS THAT WERE HAPPENING ON THE TRACK AND REALIZED THE RACERS PREPARING THEIR CARS TO RACE PRIOR HAD NO SAFETY CHECKS AND GUIDELINES. SO HE STARTED TO PROMOTE SAFETY AWARENESS AT TRACKS WITH HIS SAFETY SAFARI CREW THAT DID TRACK PREPARATION AND ENFORCED CAR SAFETY GUIDELINES IN 1954. THE NHRA SAFARI IS STILL IS ACTIVE TODAY THAT'S HELPING KEEP THE DRAG STRIPS SURFACES PREPPED TO RACE ON AND MAKING SURE THE DRIVERS ARE SAFE IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS WHILE THEY ARE DRAG RACING. WALLY PARKS WILL ALWAYS BE A LEGEND TO THE SPORT OF DRAG RACING AND TO ALL RACERS IN ALL FORMS OF MOTORSPORTS. WALLY DIED AT THE AGE OF 94 FROM THE AFTER EFFECTS OF HAVING A PNEUMONIA ON SEPTEMBER 28,2007. Click to Post
