On Nutan’s 84th birth anniversary, why she remains a luminous star like none other - bollywood
https://liveindiatimes.com/on-nutans-84th-birth-anniversary-why-she-remains-a-luminous-star-like-none-other-bollywood/
Tumblr media
In the annals of Hindi films, few actors could blend stardom with acting prowess. Actor Nutan, aunt of Kajol and mother of actor Mohnish Bahl, was one such a star. In her personality, she could present a paradox – playing a deeply orthodox Indian woman in films like Saraswatichandra and yet be disarmingly modern (she sported a swimsuit in Dilli Ka Thug in the 50s). On her birthday today, here’s unraveling this enigma.
Nutan was born to actor and filmmaker couple, Shobhana and Kumarsen Samarth on June 4, 1936. She was the eldest of four siblings including actor Tanuja. Nutan was introduced on the silver screen at the tender age of 14 as an adult in Hamari Beti, produced by her mother. Nutan was a classical Indian beauty – her perfect oval face and slender and tall frame were immediately arresting.
Tumblr media
Nutan in Bandini.
Through her career, she appeared in many unconventional roles. The first in this list was Seema (1955), where she was paired with actor Balraj Sahni. The role was a central one; as the story was told from the perspective of her character, Gauri. She played a young orphaned girl, who runs away from her uncle’s home to avoid an ill-treating aunt. Accused of theft, landing in an orphanage and falling in love with a compassionate caretaker, played by Balraj, Nutan was in stellar form. The song Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai is still fondly remembered to this day. The role also fetched Nutan her first Filmfare award in Best Actress category.
Tumblr media
(Left) Nutan in Dilli ka Thug and in Saraswatichandra.
Her career-defining role would come with Bimal Ray’s Bandini (1963), where she was cast opposite Ashok Kumar and young actor Dharmendra. Playing yet another conflicted character, she essayed the role of complex Kalyani, a woman serving a jail sentence for murder. Kalyani must choose between her compassionate prison doctor Devendra (Dharmendra) and Bikash (Ashok Kumar), a revolutionary from her past. Watch her in the iconic song, Mere Saajan Hai Uss Paar, sung evocatively by Sachin Dev Burman, to understand the myriad emotions that flash across her face.
Bandini is loosely based on a Bengali novel, Tamasi by Jarasandha (Charu Chandra Chakrabarti), a former jail superintendent who fictionalised many of his own experiences in his works.
Tumblr media
Nutan in the song Dil Ka Bhawar Kare Pukar from Tere Ghar Ke Samne.
Nutan gave another stellar performance in Bimal Ray’s Sujata (1959), as a lower caste woman who is adopted by a higher caste family. Caught between discrimination and gratitude, she lives with a family that is accepting and loving but makes her acutely aware of their fundamental difference. When love comes, that too throws Sujata into a conundrum. The film was heavily influenced by Dr BR Ambedkar’s fight against untouchability and Rabindranath Tagore’s retelling of the story of Chandalika.
But Nutan was more than intense roles. Through the ’50s and ’60s, she formed a hit pair with Dev Anand, giving us hits like Paying Guest (1957) and Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) and films like Manzil (1960) and Baarish (1957). Tune in to retro section on any FM channel and songs like Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahin and Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega (both Paying Guest) and Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Dekho Rootha Na Karo, Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar (Tere Ghar Ke Samne) will still charm you.
Nutan would form a winning combination with actor Sunil Dutt as well – Gauri (1968), Mehrbaan (1967), Milan (1967), Sujata (1959) and Khandan (1965) – will serve as examples. Think of songs like Sawan Ka Mahina (Milan) and Jalte Hain Jiske Liye Teri Aakhon Ke Diye (Sujata) and you will get an idea.
Also read: On Nargis’ 91st birth anniversary, a look at a star who symbolised passion onscreen
The oft-heard statement of how female actors cannot continue their careers post marriage was turned on its head by actors like Nutan, who gave some of her most powerful performances after marriage. At the height of her career in 1959, she married naval officer Rajneesh Bahl, aged only 23.
Films like Bandini, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Milan, Saraswatichandra and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki – all happened after she had married and was a mother of a child. Nothing about Nutan was conventional anyways – when still in her teens, her mother Shobana had sent her off to a finishing school in Switzerland, La Chatelaine, in 1953. Nutan hailed from an affluent Marathi-speaking family with a passion for cinema.
Nutan won the Filmfare award for best actress no less that five times in her career. Nutan died in February 1991, after battling breast cancer for years.

The massive Lord Shiva in chalk white plaster, atop R.K. Studios, has heavy busts. Down below in the dressing rooms of the studio, designers are busy stuffing leading ladies' bras with cotton wool, rubber and foam. For Raj Kapoor's leading ladies, two things are a must: They must have heavy busts and they must be in love with Raj Kapoor. Vyjanthimala had small busts so they were covered with foam, Zeenat Aman is not in love with Raj Kapoor, so she pretends to be.
Kapoor was already married when he made his first film Aag with three leading ladies - Kamini Kaushal, Nigar Sultana, Nargis. Out of the passion and flames of Aag, Kapoor gathered Nargis in his arms and hoisted her high on the R.K. banner. With violin in one hand and Nargis in the other he became the symbol of true love.
After Barsaat, Awara, Shri 420 and Jagte Raho, the pair became the Indian screen's most immortal love legend. The Indians were passionately discussing the Raj-Nargis ishk kahani. The Russians, on the other hand, sincerely believed that Kapoor and Nargis were husband and wife, until he received a happy wedding anniversary telegram from his wife, Krishna, during one of his visits to Moscow.
In fact, it was in the land of vodka and the Volga that the Raj-Nargis myth was blown out. It was in Moscow that Nargis felt that Raj had taken her for granted and that he was watching Padmini with unusual curiosity. Nargis married Sunil Dutt, left films and never again spoke to Kapoor. Today, she prefers to call him "that horrible man".
Nargis, daughter of a singing woman, had honest, almond eyes. She was tall and slim. She attended Queen Mary School in Bombay, and spoke fluent English. The English bit has always impressed Kapoor. The other day while watching an old RK film, he told Zeenat: "Don't think you are the only convent-educated girl. Thirty years ago, I had a leading lady who wore jeans, spoke English and used French perfume." In fact, all his leading ladies - Nargis, Padmini, Vyjanthi, Simi, Dimple and Zeenat - speak English and have impeccable manners.
The tongues wagged much after Nargis left Kapoor. People predicted his doom. The emotional let-down suited him so well that Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai was a bigger hit. Padmini, compared to Nargis, was short, top-heavy and coarse with a froggy voice. But she was the new sex-symbol of R.K. Once more there were rumours of another romance. One day Padmini declared her marriage to a doctor and left. She quit films to settle in the US.
Then came the last flame of R.K. banner, Vyjanthimala. She had made jubilee hits with both Dilip Kumar and Rajendra Kumar. The orthodox, puritan, vegetarian and over-confident Vyjanthi was swept off her feet by Raj. The affair that spanned Europe with stopovers in the Alps, almost seemed a remake of the original Raj-Nargis love story.
Raj who liked his women with shampooed hair and Worth perfume, tolerated Vyjanthi's Ramtirth Bramhi-oiled braid, and her peculiar herbal body smell. Vyjanthi, the Iyengar Brahmin, in turn accepted his lips reeking of whisky and masala murgi. The remake looked so real that Krishna, who had passed off Padmini as a harmless cow, took refuge in hotels and hospitals.
Kapoor is an exhibitionist and cannot keep anything to himself. He likes to be seen with his women, in a darbar full of people. Little did he realize that his dearest friend, Dr Bali, watched the women at the darbar with interest. While he was in London to process Sangam, he entrusted Vyjanthi to Dr Bali. The doctor, apart from being charming and well-dressed, was a trainee in the R.K. Studios.
He grew fond of Vyjanthi and she responded. It turned out to be sangam in reality with Kapoor singing Dost Dost Na Raha. However I think that it is Dr Bali whom Kapoor misses more than Vyjanthi. To this day Vyjanthi has not spoken to Kapoor. She refers to him as "that old fool". Both Nargis and Vyjanthi survive in his memory through their portraits in his cottage.
Simi, who followed Vyjanthi, in Mera Naam Joker, never made it to the wall. She was the clinging type and too smooth. One day like his other leading ladies, she too got married. But her fatal mistake was to hang around. Today, the R.K. camp, forgets even to include her on Kapoor's birthday party list despite her telephone inquiries about the party.
By the time Dimple became R.K.'s leading lady, Kapoor had surrendered his image as a romantic hero to his son Chintu.
There is another characteristic about all his leading ladies. They may curse and condemn him, but they all jump into a barren valley of frustration after him. For them he is the ultimate. After him there is no other love or profession. Just mundane things like respectability, marriage, security. Therein lies the secret of Kapoor's charm.
He is, for them, an experience and fantasy. The stars want to be part of that fantasy. So when a Zeenat Aman, dressed in ragged clothes, broke into Kapoor's cottage and touched his feet to ask for a role in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, it inspired her rivals like Vidya Sinha to say: "Who cares for Raj Kapoor."
Even little known starlets like Nivedita, on the R.K. payroll for seven years waiting for a suitable role that she never got, or Neetu Singh, again on the payroll waiting for a role in Bobby, which Dimple bagged, do not regret the long wait on the brink of fantasy. And Kapoor knows this. That is one reason why he never makes an exclusive contract with any of his leading ladies. He feels that he may change his mind before the women.
He enjoys every bit of his love life simply merely because a woman is part of his only passion-the films. He enjoys the union. He enjoys the separation and the walkouts. His image as the jilted lover is eternal.
- Devyani Chaubal, ‘Fanning the Flames’, 1977

30 June, 2018...Sanju....
Ranbir kapoor playing Sanjay dutt, in a movie directed by Rajkumar hirani (munnabhai triology) ... Almost incestuous and I expected a glorifying portrayal of Sanjay
Sanju.. A film industry product of the 80's.. Drug addict, serial womaniser, flop actor, terrorist.. Yes all that's portrayed.. But also a human being, a weak human being, a fragile son.. Those are the thoughts you take home.
Ranbir kapoor is at his best... Better than Barfi and rockstar, his is an emotional performance. The changing physical appearance, from the 18 year old weak druggie to the reformed muscle builder to the middle aged guy is only part of the story. The mannerisms of Sanjay dutt are superbly imitated... But more than that the angst of a drug addict, a terrible youth, are so well portrayed that you get drawn in emotionally (I cried at least thrice!)Simply superb performance. The script dilutes his druggie phase into a near comic role, which I felt was unnecessary and the most negative message of the movie. Other than that the movie has done justice of showing the negativity of Sanjay.
Paresh rawal as sunil dutt has underplayed his role, making sure he doesn't overpower the son. The Story portrays him as a true hero... An unloved father who cares deeply for his son.. A disciplinarian, his one fault, Sanjay is always trying to win him over. The father son relationship is the crux of the story, initially formal (typical of the 80s era). Sunil dutt is the strong man of the family, belong his weak son first out of the drug addiction, then helping him legally and then rebranding Sanjay's movie career in munnabhai mbbs. Sanjay's and sunil's mutual love is portrayed in ways that children of that era can understand well! This movie is as much a biopic of sunil dutt's fatherhood as of sanju's life
Vikas kaushal as kamli, the fictional gujju friend, is a antithesis to Sanju. Probably a good mirror to explain the society of those days. Very nice acting. But the  role is too 'chamcha', at the end!
Manisha koirala, as nargis, is passable. Great physical resemblance, but beyond that the acting and the role should have been stronger. The younger actresses, sonam ahuja and anushka kapoor.. Both are too plastic and take away from the movie. Dia mirza as manyata is a figurehead, also. Why couldn't these characters be developed more.. Probably because of the length.. But then, were the songs a must? Not one hummable song
A biopic of a guy still living, and most of the events having occurred in full public glare, is not easy to script and make. The druggie and adolescent scenes are shown to be frivolous. The parent - son relationship is portrayed maturely (for me that's the real takeaway from the movie) The terrorist phase is surprisingly handled with full responsibility! Missing are the two previous marriages, the very famous girlfriends, the sibling issues. Its a movie that's got the blessing of Sanjay dutt, so there's a bit of airbrushing the negatives. The gun running and terrorism accusation are portrayed legally corectly (I researched).the guy has suffered enough jail time and his one of the few celebrities who's been convicted for his crime of gun running (more than most culprits who are from mollycoddled families), so let's give him a break, I feel
There's a strong message about the role of the press, which I feel wasn't entirely warranted.. But that's my view!
some of  my friends aren't  wanting to see the movie because it is portraying a 'terrorist'.... the movie  is not about a terrorist or about his innocence...it's about the human being. anyways, i am seeing a TV serial about Hitler & his henchman. About Churchill, who is the worst of most human beings... i have seen movies about Gandhiji & about Bose, about mickey mouse & also a druggie. there was the movie Bombay about riots & Dil Se about suicide bombers,   also Satya & Godfather about the mafia
i think by deciding not to see movies on basis of some political belief or not reading these books seems to indicate  that you don't have inner strength  to fight these issues. I also believe that seeing such movies about characters that you don't like (Like Churchill, a historical figure i abhor) you would actually learn more about the 'other side'  & therefore strengthen your beliefs.....This is my feeling & hope that people understand this to help create a better world
Definitely, a must see, 4/5 for me
