Nilsson "Son of Schmilsson" 2xLP. While I ultimately enjoyed MoFi's rendition of "Nilsson Schmilsson" there were a few things I took issue with. This release however just sounded nice and natural. Everything was well defined but nothing sounded juiced or forced. Really well balanced all around. I was very impressed and happy with the job they did. Finally got my hands on this one! I've been looking for it for a while, but I got an email from the MoFi people saying they had just released 2000 of these on their Supervinyl series. . This is Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach and their 1998 album Painted From Memory. Apparently they worked together on a song for a movie called Grace of my Heart, and that made them both want to work together some more. The result was this amazing album. I am a huge Burt Bacharach fan, and of course I dig Elvis Costello from his phenomenal work in the late seventies/early eighties. The two of them together is exactly what you would expect. T. Rex "Electric Warrior" LP. For some reason I have been anticipating this release for months and then when it finallycame it took me 2 weeks to get around to playing it (in my defense I've been very busy with family matters). I've always thought that this was a pretty neat album. My dad was in love with the song "Jeepster" and played it often on CD in the late 80's. It is still one of my favorite songs by The Rex... and it actually just came on. Being as that's the song I've heard the most off this album, it's going to be my main test (yeah, I didn't even know "Get it On" was on this album till I was 12 or 13 and borrowed it from my old man) So yeah, I listened to "Jeepster" on both my Sennheiser's and on the main speakers and just based on hearing the first few songs, I'm happy with my purchase and will gladly be passing along my clean mid 70's copy to a new home sometime in the not too distant future. Supertramp "Breakfast in America" LP. I remember as a youth in the 90's playing this from my dad's record collection and being really disappointed with the music on the album because the album cover is so fantastic. I suppose I was hoping it would rock a bit more and maybe be a bit more biting lyrically. I'm not saying the music is shit or anything, I mean, hey, I shelled out for a MFSL copy of the album when you can pick up a good clean copy in any dollar bin... I'm just saying, they always left a lot to be desired. Love "Forever Changes" 2xLP. So, this album sounds absolutely fantastic. Kudos to @mobilefidelityofficial on making a great sounding record sound even better! While I think the whole album sounds great and there are some truly classic songs on here, I must admit I think the album is a bit overrated as a whole. Listening to it even now in all of its MFSL splendor, I can understand why it was not a success when originally released. There was a lot more interesting stuff going on, even to the point where an absolute stunner like "Alone Again Or" could be overlooked as a stand alone single. Styx "The Grand Illusion" LP. Dude, this might be my favorite sounding MFSL release, and that's saying something, as I own a lot of MoFi records from all their eras of issuing fine music. But this one brought me some extra joy. The title track is just thunderous, with the drums and bass exhibiting so much character and omph! I bought this press specifically for that song, which is one of my favorites, so the fact that it sounds so badass is gratifying. Styx (along with The Monkees) were one of the first bands I fell in love with as a little kid, mostly due to Mr. Roboto, but 4 year old me also appreciated the progressive pop stylings of the group at their finest, most commercial rocking moments from the mid to late 70's. The first CD I ever got, circa 1987, was "Kilroy Was Here", actually. So, I've been hearing Styx most of my life, and definitely first heard them on my dad's very capable, built for rock stereo system on both vinyl and CD. While I've mostly heard the title track and "Come Sail Away" on classic rock radio over the past decade, I can truly say this is the best I've ever heard them sound. By the time "Come Sail Away" came on I didn't expect I could be further impressed, but it sounded magical, and awesome, which is quite an accomplishment considering how overplayed that song is. The stereo mixing even had my dog super fascinated. She was sitting on me in my listening chair most of the side, just chilling, but then started looking around at the speakers when the sound started dancing forth in a curious manner during the side 1 closer. Even though I'm predominantly a fan of their rocking hits (don't much care for the ballads or deep cuts, sorry), so there are only 3 songs on the album that I'll keep coming back to, I'm really glad I have this press. My old man got me hooked on #MoFi quality when I was a baby when his old man got him #TheBeatles Collection on vinyl back in 1983. It became mine after he died in 2016 and I one day hope to pass it on to one of my nephews. So that was the seed of my Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab love. When I decided to upgrade my turntable last June I excitedly bought the #Ultradeck+m and the #UltraPhono preamp/headphone amplifier to run through my Dynaco ST70. Those fine pieces compliment the MoFi record and stylus brushes I use, along with their great cleaning solutions (bottom right of picture), LP stand, and record weight I had already long used. It's not hype. I longed for these MoFi products before they even existed or before I could afford them. As a collector of 20+ years, I have always been fascinated and loved the consistent quality of #MFSL records and their fine accessories. The Doors - S/T LP. People talk a lot of shit on The Doors. Just because Jim Morrison was a horrible drunk and a terrible poet. Those two facts do not negate the fact that The Doors wrote interesting and innovative music for the time and that Jim was a fantastic frontman, solid vocalist, and decent lyricist. I'm not saying everybody has to like or respect The Doors but they did some really great and unique stuff especially for being as big as they were. So when people just start slamming The Doors for no real good reason, I generally tend to think a little less of their musical opinion when their only answer for not likingthem is Jim Morrisonwas a terrible personand a bad poet. But I digress. Wes Montgomery "Bumpin'" LP. The title track is my favorite song on this album and to my ears one of the more adventurous cuts from the LP. I have listened to this song a fair amount over the years but I gotta admit that when the bass drum came in, it startled me as I'd never heard it like that before, so lifelike. While I have surprisingly never had an original press of the album to compare this MFSL press to, as I've said, I'd heard that title track a bunch on various forms of digital over the years and I was still finding new sounds as I dropped the needle on this LP for the first time. Everyday I Write the Book, this album's big single, was a frequent play on MTV, and I found his earlier work afterwards. Now he's one of my favs, with my cover band performing 3 of his tunes. Besides being a great songwriter, he has also worked with Paul McCartney and is married to Diana Krall.
