a s7 freddyxdeke au? but also totally ignore this if u dont feel for the ship lol. maybe something like deke and freddy highkey fall for eachother during the first trip, things still end up the same way they did but its a bit more tragic. then deke meets old freddy and he recognizes him asap this time. and he's such a shattered and different person deke's heart is highkey broken by who he's become. maybe some hurt/comf with the whole team of emm. or the team attempting with varying results lol
"Deke, how do you do this?"  Daisy smiled at herself, clad in a green very nice dress.
"I've always had great style."  He said indignantly.  "I still have the leather jacket from the future."
Daisy nodded and fixed her neck line, before offering her arm.  "Shall we?"
Deke and Daisy, arm in arm, walked through the party of politicians and jazz music, up to the bar Mack was standing behind.
"Two of your finest Zimas, please."  Deke said in his own version of suave.  He would have made another joke, but someone caught his eye.
A man his age, standing behind the bar with Mack and Coulson, stocking the liquor.  His hair was slicked back, like Dekes, but he wasn't wearing a tuxedo, favoring a regular white shirt with brown suspenders and tie.  Deke really wanted that Zima, his mouth had gone dry.
When Mack assigned their stations, Deke made up a reason to walk around the bar area, wanting to look for that man again.
He was back behind the bar when Deke got back, and Daisy and Coulson were gone.  He took a seat at the bar.
"Zima doesn't exist."  Mack told him, sliding over a glass of clear liquid.
"What's this?"  Deke brought the beverage up to his nose and smelled it.
"Water."  Mack answered.  "Basically Zima."
Deke rolled his eyes and pushed the glass away.  "I'll take a martini."
Mack gave a weird look.  "You don't even like beer, how would you like vodka?"
"I told you," Deke shrugged, "boot juice."
It was Mack's turn to roll his eyes.  "In the normal world, we call it moonshine."
Deke sighed dramatically and slumped against the bar.  Mack wasn't going to make the drink.
A glass with a tall stem and an olive was slid across the bar.  Deke looked up and met eyes with the other man behind the counter, who winked and smiled.
Deke switched seats so he was sitting in front of the other bartender.  "Thank you, how much is this?"  He reached into his pocket.
"On the house."  The man shook his head.  "Because your friends are working."  He added as an afterthought.
"What's your name?"  Deke asked, then took a drink of the martini.
"Freddy."  The bartender answered.  "You?"
"D-"
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Governor Franklin Roosevelt."  The band stopped playing and the crowd applauded.
Deke turned and watched a man walk stiffly up to the microphone and started talking.
"He's really here."  Mack was smiling slightly, watching the politician up on the stage.
"The governor?"  Freddy started cleaning a glass.  "What's the big deal?"
Mack kept talking, and Deke didn't listen until he heard the words "way ahead of his time."  He whipped his head around and met Macks eyes.
"Or, will be, someday."  Mack covered badly.  Freddy gave him a weird look, before turning his attention back to Deke.
"So, Freddy, anyway," Deke changed the subject quickly, "how'd you fall into this shifty line of work?"
Freddy shrugged and leaned against the bar.  "Well, after my dad kicked the bucket, I was hustling work in the streets.  Mr. Koenig offered me some."
Deke nodded solemnly in understanding.  "I lost my dad, too."  Images of the Lighthouse in over one hundred years flashed through his mind, and he remembered some of the things he did to survive.  "You do what you gotta do."
Freddy understood.  Maybe not all of it, but he knew Deke and him were thinking along the same lines.
The party went on, FDR hadn't died yet, and conversation fizzled out.  Deke drank the water when his martini was gone, stealing glances at Freddy every now and again.
"Deke."  Mack nodded to the other side of the room, where Coulson and Daisy were moving.  The two men at the bar left Freddy to follow.
The service hallway was empty, except for the four S.H.E.I.L.D agents.  FDR wasn't the target.
"The Chronicoms are after someone else, named Freddy."  Jemmas voice crackled over the radio
"Freddy?"  Dark hair and sharp features flashed to the front of Dekes mind.
The four took off running down the hallways, then they heard a suppressed gunshot.  Daisy quaked the robots away and went to finish them off.  They rounded the corner and saw a woman bleeding on the ground and Freddy sitting against the wall.
"What is all this?"  Freddy asked breathlessly, staring at the three men.
"We're saving your life."  Deke answered and held his hand out.  "Let's go."
Freddy looked at him for a second, then took his hand and stood up.  Deke might have held on for a second longer than needed, but nobody noticed.
"We'll keep him safe.  Meet back at Koenigs."  Mack said, then followed Deke and Freddy down the hallway to the back exit.  Their stolen truck was back there.  Mack got in the drivers seat, Deke in the passengers, and Freddy in the back.
"The cops will be on us any minute,"  Deke turned in his seat to look out the back window.
"Any idea why they're after you, kid?"  Mack glanced in the rear view mirror as he drove.
"No, none."  Freddy leaned forward.  "I-I'm just supposed to make a delivery tonight."
"Well, if they wanted to stop him, we better make sure they don't."  Deke looked to Mack.
"Tell us where you need to go."  Mack said to Freddy.
A siren flared to life behind them, the cops were chasing them.
"Faster!"  Freddy yelled, looking out the back window.  "They're gaining on us!"
"This boat won't go any faster!"  Mack yelled back.
"We gotta give 'em the slip."  Freddy told the other two.
"Yeah, and we gotta lose them, too."  Deke suggested.  He felt Freddys eyes on him, and the look on his face told him they had said virtually the same thing.
Mack turned off the engine and drifted into an abandoned alley.  the three ducked down under the line of sight from the windows.  The police car sped off down the street, and the three men sat up in their seats.
Freddy laughed.  "So long, Coppers."
"Where do we go now?"  Mack asked.
Freddy smiled and clapped them both on the shoulder.  "Gotta deliver the goods."  Then he opened the door and jumped out of the car.
Mack and Deke made eye contact, then followed.  Freddy opened the bed of the truck, revealing their other clothes.  "Might wanna get out of those fancy duds, you kinda stick out."
As Mack grabbed his other shirt and jacket, Deke snatched up the radio.  "This is Deke."  He said into it.  "Hello?  Is anyone there?"  Nobody answered.
"What's that?"  Freddy nodded to the device Deke was holding.
"It's like a, uh, telephone."  Mack tried to explain.  "Deke's an inventor."
"Hello?  Is anyone out there?  Daisy?"  Deke wasn't paying attention to the others.  "Jemma?  Coulson?"  A beat, and still no answer.  "These things suck."  Deke tossed the walkie down into the truck.  "They have, like, zero range."
"It's gotta be plugged into something."  Freddy said, like it was the most obvious thing.
"No, I know how they're supposed to work"  Deke picked up his clothes.  "I can fix it."
"This is the delivery?"  Mack picked up a bottle.  "More booze?  They'd kill you over this?"
"This is the highest grade giggle juice ever made."  Freddy took the bottle.  "A lot of people would kill to get their paws on the formula."
Mack sighed.  "If we're going to protect you, you need to be honest with us."
Then Freddy said something Deke couldn't understand even if he tried, and then they started driving again, to a train yard.
They carried the four cases of alcohol out of the car and set them on the ground.
"Who's the buyer for all this?"  Mack asked as Deke looked up at the night sky and fixed his tie.
"Some guy, I dunno."  Freddy shrugged.
"What's he look like?"  Mack tried.
"No idea."  Freddy slipped his hands into his pockets.
"When does he get here?"  Deke asked.
Freddy smiled, like he just said something funny.  "He doesn't.  The meet-up is 500 miles away."
Deke and Mack shared a look.  "That's a lot of miles, we don't have time for that."
"Why'd you have us unload this, then?"  Mack sounded close to angry.
"So you can take the car and go."  Freddy told them.  "This is where we go our separate ways, fellas."  A train whistle blew in the distance, getting closer.  "That's my ride.  I appreciate you saving my life," he looked right at Deke as he said that, "I owe you one."
"We're not leaving you."  Deke said before he knew what he was doing.  Luckily, Mack nodded.
"I don't need no body guard."  Freddy shook his head, the train rumbling closer.
"The cops that are after you, they're not the type to give up."  Deke said seriously.  "They're gonna keep coming until they finish you off."
Freddy stared into Dekes eyes for a long, silent moment.  Then he nodded wordlessly, and the three men got on the train.
Freddy was fiddling with the small radio, Mack was sitting on the floor of the box car, and Deke was looking out at the passing scenery.
"You really invented these?"  Freddy asked.  Deke looked back, met Macks eyes, who nodded, then back to Freddy.
"Yeah, I did."  Deke took off his hat and sat next to Freddy.  "It's just a prototype."
"And you can talk to someone on it?"  Freddy was smiling in disbelief.  "It doesn't have to be plugged in?"  He met Dekes eyes.  "You must be real smart."
Mack sighed, got up, and walked to the other side of the car.  "I'm going to get some rest."  The look he gave Deke conveyed: don't do anything stupid.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, Freddy spoke.
"Deke."  He said the name like it was a foreign word.  "That's a funny name.  Where're you from?"
"Upstate," Deke said, the answer he gave anyone who asked that same question, "near lake Ontario."
Freddy smiled.  "Is that why you don't understand any slang from the city?  You've never been?"
"I think the slang is horrible and I'm not even going to try to understand, but I like the accent."  Deke laughed.
Freddy nodded.  There was another stretch of awkward silence.
"So, uh," Freddy scratched his head, "at the party, you walked in with a real pretty lady."
Deke furrowed his brow in confusion, then realized who he was talking about.  "Oh, that's just Daisy.  She's a friend."
Freddy laughed quietly.  "Just a friend?  You mean she's not your girl?"
Deke shook his head with a smile.  "No, Daisy isn't anyones girl."
"That's too bad," Freddys smile sent something through Deke, "I would've thought a handsome guy like you would have girls lined up."
Deke flushed and looked away.  "You're really smooth, you know that?"
"I should hope so."  Freddy leaned forward and offered the Walkie-Talkie.  When Deke took it, their hands brushed.  Freddy leaned farther forward and placed his hand on Dekes arm.
The next thing Deke knew, a pair of lips were on his.  Something that surprised him very much.  The kiss short, but it was hot.
Seconds after it started, it stopped.  Freddy pulled back, looking slightly sheepish, leaving Deke red and breathless.  "Sorry, I shouldn't have-"
Deke grabbed Freddy by his tie and pulled him in again, capturing his lips in his own.  They almost fell back, but Freddy braced his hand on the wall of the car, bringing his other hand up to Dekes hair, still stiff from the gel.  Deke hummed and opened his mouth into the kiss, screwing his eyes shut.
Freddy got off his chair and climbed into Dekes lap, straddling his hips, never breaking the kiss in the process.  He leaned a little too far forward, and Dekes chain fell back.  The two fell to the floor in a crash, and they laughed breathlessly as they lay on the uncomfortable wood.  Deke was about to lean up for another kiss, when--
"Hey, are you--?"  Mack stood up in a hurry, and stopped dead when he saw the two men on the floor.  "Deke!"  Freddy pushed himself up and away from Deke.
"Whaaaat?"  Deke dragged out the word with a sigh and let his head fall to the floor.
"Hey, if you got a problem with--"  Freddy stood up and tried to look threatening, but Mack waved him off.
"I don't care, just don't do that while I'm in the room!"  Mack ran a hand down his face.
"Do you want us to jump cars?"  Deke sat up shook his head, showing off his messily ruffled hair.
Mack looked away from the two.  "Either that or stop."
"It's a box car, there aren't doors on the end you can just jump between."  Freddy piped up, fixing his tie.
Mack shook his head and gestured vaguely to the opposite end of the car, walking back to where he dropped his coat and hat.
Deke pushed himself off the floor and offered his hand to Freddy, pulling him behind a stack of boxes that were there before they got on.  They both sat on the floor, Freddy with his back to the boxes and Mack, and Deke against the wall.
"So," Freddy started awkwardly, "your friend doesn't mind all . . ." he gestured between the two.
Deke shook his head nonchalantly.  "No, he's fine."  He smiled jokingly.  "He just thinks I'm annoying."  The rumble of the train and the slight shaking of the cargo drowned out whatever noise Mack was making, so their hushed voices wouldn't reach him.  At Freddys unconvinced expression, Deke gave a more serious answer.  "Where we grew up, it was different.  It was like a different time," he smiled softly at his own joke, "it wasn't exactly New York City."
"Greatest city in the world."  Freddy smiled sadly.  "My old man took a walk off a tall building after the market crashed.  I'm kinda glad he never found out about this."
"I'm sorry."  Deke reached out and placed his hand on Freddys knee, trying to be comforting.  "My dad, he . . . he left when I was twelve.  Died a few years ago."
Freddy placed his hand on top of Dekes and smiled sadly.  Something crossed his face, and he shifted himself forward.  "When I make this delivery, come with me."
Deke tilted his head slightly.  "What?"
"It's not just whiskey."  Freddy whispered excitedly.  "There's something else, and when I give it to the buyer, I'm going to get back everything my family lost and more.  Come with."  He kissed Deke quickly.  "We can--"
"Mackenzie . . ."  The radio crackled to life.  ". . . can you . . . information . . ."
Deke and Freddy quickly stood up and ran around the pile of boxes.  Freddy stopped short, staring at his open crates of liquor.
". . . Wilfred . . ."  Enochs voice fizzled out as Mack picked up the walkie.
"Enoch, I copy, do you hear me?"  Mack waited for a response, but none came.  Freddy slowly stepped around Deke and toward his shipment.  "Enoch, do you copy?  Over."
"What the hell was he doing?"  Freddy pointed to the alcohol crates and spoke to Deke.  He started rifling through them, making sure everything was there while Mack spoke into the radio.  "Wanna tell me why you're snooping through my goods?"
Mack lowered the radio with a sigh, stepping closer to Freddy.  "I need to know who and what we're dealing with.  You may not think there's more to this, but I do."
Freddy turned back to Deke.  "So, was that just to distract me?"  His face went from suspicious to angry.  "Keep me busy while your friend looks through my cargo?"  The last few words grew to a yell and Deke shook his head.
"Just let me inspect the bottles."  Mack said calmly.
"And get me killed?"  Freddy whipped back around.  "I deliver open bottles.  What's that say about me?  That I'm a snoop?"
"You're not curious?"  Mack asked.
"Curious'll get you kill faster than trust."  Freddy looked back at Deke as he said that.
"Let's just get him there and be done with it."  Deke said to Mack.  "It's ripples, not waves, right?"
Mack ignored Deke, instead stepping closer to Freddy.  "Step aside."
The two stood in a silent challenge for a moment, then Freddy stepped aside.
"Deke, give me a hand."  Mack said and picked up a bottle.  Deke hesitated, looking back at Freddy, before slowly following the order.
A gun clicked.  "Like I said," Freddys voice was quiet, "I can't let you do that."
"Put the gun down."  Mack said evenly.
"You need to listen to Deke, here."  Freddy gestured to the man in question with the gun.  "Just let me do my job, and we can all go home."
There was a long, excruciating moment of silence.  Finally, Freddy stepped back and pointed to two boxes.  "Both of you, sit down."  His voice was shaking, barely noticeable, but it was there.
Slowly, the three men all sat down.  Freddy refused to look at Deke.  They sat.  Time passes.  The sun rose over the horizon.  All in silence.  All with Freddy pointing that gun.
"Why don't you come clean."  Freddy said suddenly, the train still rumbling along the tracks.  "You ain't bootleggers, and you definitely ain't from around here."
"Okay, you're right."  Deke sat up straighter.  "We were sent a very, very, very long way to make sure that you don't die."
"Why?"  Freddy asked, leaning forward slightly.  "'Cause I'm this 'thread'?  What does that even mean?"
"It's complicated," Mack looked up from his hands, "but Deke's right.  Our job is to protect you.  How do you know your buyer?"
"I know her, the lady who sent me to do this."  Freddy gripped the revolver tighter.  "She knew my father.  And she's giving me a chance to be something he never could."  He looked at Deke, then, a question in his eyes.  A question of, would you still go with me?
Before Deke could do anything to answer, the whistle ripped through the air and the train car shook.  Mack leapt forward, tackling Freddy.  The gun fell from his hand, and Deke picked it up.
They brought the crates of alcohol out to the pier.  As Mack started looking for whatever was hidden inside, someone spoke from the other end of the radio.
"Mack?  Deke?"  It was Daisy.  "Are you there?"
"Hey, it's Deke."  He picked it up and answered.
"Finally.  We're on our way to you.  You guys have to be ready to leave as soon as we arrive. We have no time.  Where's Mack?"
"He's with Freddy."  Deke walked a little farther away from the pair, but kept his eyes on them.  Freddy spared a glance every now and then.
"Freddy is not what he seems.  He is very dangerous."
"Freddy?"  Deke turned around and watched the water, squinting against the sun.  "Nah, he's alright.  He's just in a tight spot.  We kind of have a lot in common, actually."  Thoughts of the previous night made themselves known in his head.
"No, you don't.  Trust me."  Daisy cut him off quickly.  "Do not let him out of your sight."
"Okay, don't worry."  Deke said nervously, looking back at the man in question, who was staring back at him.  "I-I got him in my sight and my finger on the trigger."
A beat of silence.  "You have a gun?"
"Yeah, it's Freddys."
Another beat.  "Take the shot."
Dekes eyes widened and he stared down at the radio.  "Pardon?"
"That's Wilfred Malick, future head of Hydra."  Daisy said.  "If you kill him now, you'll save thousands of lives in the future."
Dekes stomach dropped.  He stared down at the gun, not listening to Daisy anymore.  He set the radio down and approached the others.
"Mack."  Deke said seriously.  "They're on their way, and we have to leave as soon as possible."
Mack nodded and popped the cork of one of the bottles, and started pouring.  "We'll be ready."
"One more thing."  Deke looked at Freddy, then back at Mack.  "Daisy says this is Wilfred Malick."
Freddy looked between them.  Dekes hesitation and Macks shock.  "My name, so what?"
"She told me to kill him."  Deke couldn't look at Freddy, not even when he heard the sputtering questions.
Mack thought for multiple seconds, paying no mind to the vial of green liquid that falls out of the bottle in his hand.  "She did?"
Deke nodded, glancing at Freddy.  He was staring in horror back.
"Watch him."  Mack said and walked over to where the radio was set down.
Mack started talking into the radio, and Freddy started talking to Deke.
"My guy's here in a few minutes," Freddy sounded desperate, "we can still go, get everything we want in life."
"Freddy," Deke closed his eyes, "I can't leave my team."
"They want to kill me."  Freddy stepped forward and gripped the other man's arm.
"They're my family."  Deke hissed.  "Would you leave your family on a whim?"
Freddy gripped Dekes hand tightly.  "Please, Deke."
He sighed.  Then his head jerked up when he heard something.  A car.  A car with multiple police officers in it.
"Get down!"  Deke yelled and fired Freddys gun at the Chronicoms before ducking behind the wooden boxes.
By the end of the fight, Freddy was on his way to creating Hydra, Enoch was gone, and the rest of the team was in 1955.

"Deke, I gave you an order."  Daisy said over without looking up from the file she was reading.  "Why didn't you follow it?"
"It was murder."  He responded plainly, tossing aside his own file and picking a new one up.  "You ordered me to murder a guy who hadn't done anything wrong yet."
"It was a tough call, but--"
"I couldn't do it."  Deke cut her off.  His cheeks seemed to go slightly pink.
Daisy scoffed.  "Why not?  You never used to shy away from this kind of stuff."
"Daisy, he kissed me."  Deke looked at her and tossed the file down.  She froze and looked up.  He was definitely flustered, and he looked away as soon as she met his eyes.
"You're serious?"  Daisy lowered her voice to a whisper.  When his face just got more red, she laughed in disbelief.  "Oh, God, you're serious.  You made out with the father of the guy who sent your grandparents to a different planet."
"Don't mock me, I'm having a personal crisis!"  Deke hissed and glanced at the door to the lab.
"Does Mack know?"  Daisy leaned forward.  If possible, his face got even more flushed.  "I'm so sorry."  They went back to reading the files in silence.  Suddenly, Daisy spoke again; "So . . . if it was still 2019 and you met Freddy Malick, would you go out with him?"
"Daisy!"  Deke pinched the bridge of his nose.
"What?"  She glanced up from her file.  He was glaring at her.  "That's not a no."
Deke groaned and tossed his file aside.  "This crisis kind of ongoing, so id you can stop making fun of me--"
"Wait, shut up."  Daisy picked up his discarded file and stared at the name.  "We can talk more about this later."
"What is it?"  Deke leaned over to see what he missed.
"Daniel Sousa."
This man turned out to be important, and they needed to help him.  So, Yo-Yo and Deke went out to retrieve a device for Coulson and Sousa.
After the only words exchanged through the otherwise silent car ride were the directions read from a map, Yo-Yo tried to start a conversation.  "You're quiet."  She pointed out.
Deke tried to play it off as not being an experienced driver, but she could tell he was lying.
"In the 30s, you drove fine."  She leveled him with a look.  "Is it what Daisy asked you to do?"
Deke sighed an closed his eyes for a second.  "A little."
Elena waited.  And waited.  "And?"
"Promise not to laugh."  Deke glanced out the window at the houses.  "Daisy laughed and now I just feel worse."
"I promise."  Elena glanced at the street map again.
Deke blew a long sigh out of his mouth.  "In the 30s, Freddy Malick kissed me."  He was met with stunned silence.
"Is that why you didn't shoot him?"  Elena asked after a minute.  Deke shook his head.
"Not the whole reason."  He glanced out the windows again.  "He was scared, asked me to go with him to start Hydra.  I couldn't shoot him."
Elena sighed and studied the map again.  "Is that why Mack is acting weird around you?  He caught you two?"  Deke nodded wordlessly.  "Wow.  If you need to . . . talk about it, or something, you can talk to me."
"Thanks."  Deke smiled slightly.  "How close are we?"
"We . . ." she dragged the word out.  "We just passed it."
They split up as soon as they entered the house, searching for whatever briefcase they were supposed to get.  Elena drew her gun and walked up the staircase, while Deke explored the ground level.
Deke was walking through one of the bathrooms when he heard a floorboard creak on the other side of the wall.  A man stepped into view, and Deke started backing away, searching his pockets for a weapon that wasn't there without taking his eyes off the person in front of him.  He should have been more worried about the man behind him.
There was a sharp pain on the back of his head, and Dekes world went sideways and dark.
He woke up to someone slapping him, and he gasped and sat up.  He had been lying across the back seat of a car.
"Rise and shine, big brain."  One of his assailants said.  Deke was seeing starts, and not just because it was night.
He was dragged out of the car and into a large house, to a fancy looking study with a man sitting behind a desk.  As soon as the door closed, Deke jerked his arm out of the grip of the men who kidnapped him.
"Here's your scientist, boss."  One of them said.  The man behind the desk was shrouded in darkness, so Deke couldn't make out his face.
He stood up and slowly made his way around the desk.  He stared at Deke for several seconds.  "Leave us," he said to the two men behind the guest, "I want to speak to him alone."
This man knew who Deke was, but Deke did not know him.  The two men left the room, and now Deke was alone with this stranger.
The man reached out his hand to touch Dekes face.  Deke took a step back.  He wouldn't flinch, no matter how creepy this got.  The man seemed slightly hurt.
"Deke."  He knew his name.  How did this man know his name?  "Take a seat."
"I'll stand, if that's alright with you."  Deke tried to sound confident, smoothing out his jacket.
"You look exactly the same."  The man chuckled.  When Deke didn't laugh along, he frowned.  "Do you remember me?"
"Can't say I do, no."  But Deke was getting a feeling in his gut that he knew the man in front of him.
"That's fine, it's been a long time."  The man unbuttoned his blazer.  "The name is Wilfred."
"Freddy . . ." It clicked immediately.  This was Hydra.
Freddy smiled.  He reached out, grabbed Dekes tie, and pulled him in.  Deke did not expect to meet Malick again, and he certainly didn't expect resuming whatever they started in that train car.
The kiss was just as it had been twenty years ago (two days for Deke), hot and short.  Deke had no idea what to do.  He had to get back to the Zypher, back to the team.  But Freddy had him by the back of his neck and was biting his bottom lip.
Freddy moved his hand up until his fingers were tangled in Dekes hair and worked to loosen his tie with the other hand.  Malick had a beard now, and way more confidence.  Deke tried to pull away, but Freddy just gripped his hair tighter and kissed harder.
Deke gasped from the pain on his scalp, and Freddy took that as an invitation to use tongue.
Dekes tie had been fully undone and tossed aside, and the top buttons on his shirt were next.  The encounter had become sufficiently uncomfortable, seeing as he was now more than twenty years younger than the other man.  Deke needed to get out before this went any further.
Deke brought his hands up to Malicks chest and pushed.  "Freddy," he tried to say, "Freddy, stop."  Freddy did not stop, but he slowed down.  Deke could finally pull his head fully away.  "I can't be here."
Malick sighed and bowed his head, catching both Dekes wrists when he tried to pull his hand away.  If he felt Deke flinch, he didn't care, because he didn't let go.  "So, you're a S.H.I.E.L.D scientist now?"
"Something like that."  Deke said stiffly, trying to free his right hand.
"I'm guessing Agent Sousa told you about his suspicions?"  Malick squeezed the other mans wrists tighter.
Deke had never met Daniel Sousa, but he had to play along to get out of this alive.  "I guess this is it."  He blinked and looked around the room.  "Hydra?"
Malick hummed and brought Dekes right hand up to his mouth, kissing it softly.  "I can make a spot for you.  It's not to late."  When he got no answer, he continued.  "You saved my life twenty-four years ago.  I want to repay you."
"Not like this, Freddy."  Deke whispered.  "How did your life get here?"
Malick finally let of him.  "You do what you gotta do."
Deke remembered those words vividly, it felt like he said those words years ago, and not just days.  "I can't be a part of this."  He said.  "My team--"
Malick scoffed and started rummaging around his desk.  "The same team that ordered you to kill me?"
"That was just one persons order."  Deke knew what he was about to say was completely stupid, but he said it anyway.  "Maybe . . . maybe she knew what you would go on to do."
A gun clicked.  The revolver looked so much like the one Malick pointed at Mack and Deke on that train.  Deke threw his hands out in front of him, he didn't know what for, though.  The gesture was useless.
"You're a smart guy.  Start making smart decisions."  Malicks voice didn't shake, and neither did his hand, not anymore.  "I offered you multiple chances to join me.  And you turned down every single one."
"Freddy, please," Deke kept his voice as steady as possible, "put that down."  Malick pulled back the hammer.  "What happened to wanting to repay me?"
Malick thought on that.  Slowly, he lowered the gun.  "Fine.  Get out."  Deke let a relieved smile cross his face, before turning to the door to the study and fumbling with the handle.  "One thing before you go."  Deke froze.  "If I ever see you again, I won't be so generous."
Deke nodded slowly and opened the door.

Back on the Zypher, Deke was sitting in the lab by himself, rubbing his head where he had been hit.  He groaned softly when he touched the wrong spot and his head throbbed with pain again.
Soft footsteps made their way into the dimmed lab.  "Do you think you have a concussion?"
Deke squinted up at Yo-Yo and shrugged.  "Maybe.  He hit me pretty hard."
Elena walked over so she was sitting next to him.  She placed a hat on his knee.  "You left this behind."
Deke smiled slightly and picked it up.  "Thanks."
They sat in silence for a minute, then,  "You okay?"
Deke nodded and winced again.  "Yeah, I think so."
"So, Malick again?"  Elena crossed her arms and leaned against the wall.
"Yeah."  Deke sighed.  "I don't really want to talk about it."
"Your tie is crooked and your hair is messy."  She pointed out.  "What happened in there?"
"I said I don't want to talk about it."  Deke tried to smooth out his hair but flinched.  From the pain of the wound or the memory of Malick, he didn't know.
"Deke, did you and him--?"
"I didn't want to!"  Deke said suddenly, refusing to look at her.  "But he . . . he wouldn't stop."
Elena stared in shock.  "He forced himself on you?"
It took a moment, but Deke nodded.  "It didn't go that far, but," he sighed, "it was really uncomfortable."
Elena hesitantly brought her hand up and placed it on his.  "I'm sorry."  She said quietly.  "That's messed up."
"At least he let me go."  Deke rubbed his eyes.  "He said he wouldn't be so generous next time he sees me."
"That's still not okay."  Elena frowned.  "You're lucky he didn't kill you."
Deke held his right wrist in his left hand, as if protecting himself.  "It felt so . . . wrong."  He whispered.  "He wouldn't let go of me, and he grabbed right where my metric was."
Elena looked down at where hers would have been, but there was no scar.  Those arms were long gone.  Instead, she wrapped her new arms around Deke, her friend.  They hadn't been close before, but she was willing to change that.
"You'll be okay."  She told him.  "What's that thing Jemma always says?"
Deke huffed out a laugh and returned the hug the best he could in their awkward position.  "The steps you take don't have to be big, they just have to take you in the right direction."

This story takes place in a universe where Bobby Singer adopted an orphaned girl after a hunt gone wrong. Years later, she gained the attention of our favorite candy loving Archangel turned Trickster.
We wanted to share this with you but didn't know where to start exactly, so why not in the middle. It doesn't take alot of background to follow this bit but if you want more of Anna and Gabriel let us know. We might be persuaded to write further adventures for them.

Anna was excited. She was getting to spend the whole weekend with Gabriel in a snowy little mountain cabin. Just him and her, alone. No dad. No Winchesters. To top it all off, her dad was in approval of the whole trip. It gave her a warm feeling that made her think her dad had finally, maybe, started to accept her relationship with Gabe; even trust him enough to take her off alone, states away.
That was the only downside to this whole trip. To keep up the appearances that Gabriel was a human, she had to drive to the cabin. Bobby had tried multiple times to get her to take his truck in the case of bad weather, but she insisted that she had looked into the weather, and that her little Nova would do the trick. Boy was she pressing her luck.
About a mile away from the highway turn off, the snow had turned from light, fluffy, dream-like globs to a constant white curtain that blew with wind gusts that rocked her car. Even with her wipers turned on high speed, she was having difficulties seeing the road. It’s not that it bothered her to drive in the weather, it was worrying about what other idjit could be out with her.
With some skill, and a few encouraged rubs over the talisman, she finally pulled up to a quaint cabin. Letting out a sigh of relief, she turned off all the extras working on her car before cutting the engine. Looking to the porch, she mapped out a little plan to get herself and her bags inside with minimal exposure to the cold. Taking a few deep breaths, she launched out of the driver’s seat, skidded as she grabbed her duffel from the back, and quick waddled to the door to keep from falling down.
Finding a small amount of shelter under the porch roof, she stomped her boots against the wood to knock off the snow before she thought about heading inside.
The door whipped open to reveal Gabriel clad in a red terry cloth robe with white trim and holding a mug of hot chocolate, cookies and worried expression, “One more tug on that necklace and I was going to come for you.”
Anna looked up when the door opened, sighing as the warmth from inside flowed out to meet her exposed skin. A grin spread across her face at the sight of Gabriel. “Sorry to have worried you. If it makes you feel better, doing it was keeping me calm.” She stepped up to him, and picked up a star cookie. “Aren’t we festive? Do I have to give Santa a kiss to gain entry to the North Pole?”
“It would help,” Gabriel said as he bent down so she could reach and he’d have some control on not spilling any of the goodies.
“Well, anything I can do to help.” Anna leaned in and gave him a sweet kiss with a cold nose and chilly lips.
Gabriel gave and over exaggerated shudder as he broke the kiss and stepped aside, “Get in. You’re going to get frostbite on your ass if you keep standing out in the cold.”
“The cold never bothered me anyway,” she sang playfully as she quickly entered the cabin. Stepping off to the side, she dropped her bag, and started to shed her layers. It wasn’t until she went to hang up her coat that she noticed the greenery wrapped around the coat rack. “Did the cabin come decorated with winter stuff, or did you do that too?”
Turning around so she could lean against the wall to take off her boots, she froze when she saw the rest of the decor. Every inch of the cabin was decorated in what she could only describe as a tasteful Christmas wonderland. There was even a real Christmas tree sitting in the corner, decorated completely with lights and ornaments.
Anna turned to Gabriel wide eyed, and asked, “Did you do all of this?”
Gabriel beamed at her as he sat the plate he was holding on a nearby table, “I even made cookies. The human way. Do you know how irritating it is to bake sugar cookies? They burn like they’re made of matchsticks if you don’t watch them.”
Anna crossed to him quickly and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling him into a tight hug. “I love it,” she murmured before kissing him, “I love that you would do something so human for me too. I’m sure your cookies will taste delicious.”
“And I’m glad that you love it, because you spilled your cocoa on my hand,” he said, squeezing the words out between the press of their lips as the beverage dripped off his fingers and onto the floor.
Gasping softly, she let him go, and stepped back to look at his hand holding the mug. “I’m sorry! Here, let me take it.” She carefully took the warm drink from his hand and held it between hers.  She shivered a little at the sudden warmth. “Did it burn you?”
“Barely felt it,” he said, dropping a quick kiss to her cheek then snapping his fingers to clean up the mess, “Don’t worry about it, Cupcake. Just come in and get comfy.” He lead the way over to the couch where a box lay wrapped and adorned with ribbons.
Anna quickly pulled and wiggled her feet out of her boots before following Gabe to the couch. Spying the box, her looked to Gabe and raised an eyebrow at him. “Is this a present for me?” she asked.
“It is,” he admitted as he sat down, tugging his robe closed so he wouldn’t end up flashing her, “And I know we said no gifts but this is practical for this weekend.”
Studying him with scrunched eyes, she set the mug down and picked up the gift so she could sit down. “What is it?” she asked, giving the box a little shake.
Gabriel shook his head, refusing to spill the beans on the contents of box. “Open and all will be revealed,” he said as he snapped up a cup of eggnog for himself.
“Fine,” she whined playfully as she tugged off the ribbon. Once it was out of the way, she ripped off the paper, revealing the plain white box underneath. “Curiouser and curiouser.” Grasping the lid, she gave it a few jiggles until it came off. Anna set the lid to the side and pushed back the tissue paper. “Is this what I think it is?” she asked, looking to him with a small smile.
“Happy belated Christmas, Anna,” Gabriel said warmly.
Anna’s smile grew and she pulled the soft red material from the box, shaking it out a little so it would hang loose. “A Mrs. Claus robe. Thank you. This really will come in handy this weekend,” she leaned over and kissed Gabe’s cheek, “I can’t believe that you found a place that it was still snowing this time of year.” She refolded the robe to place back in the box, but more red fabric caught her eye.
Raising an eyebrow at Gabe, she set the robe aside, and pulled a silky piece of red fabric out of the box. Holding it up, she smirked at Gabe. “If I wear this, am I on the Naughty or Nice list?”
“Oh, the Nice list,” Gabriel said with a waggle of his eyebrows.
“Will what I do in it land me on the Naughty list?” she teased with a wink, replacing the items back in the box.
“That’s all on you, Anastasia,” Gabriel drawled, “If you want to change, the bedroom is in the back, down the hall.”
Anna looked at Gabe, barely licking over her bottom lip. “Okay, Gabriel,” she drawled back to him, “I’ll be right back.” She rose from the couch and started toward the back, wiggling her tush as she stepped past him.
As soon as she was out of the room, he shut his eyes and took a deep breath. If he listened closely enough, he could hear the baying of the Hellhounds hundreds of miles away, hunting their prey. He wanted to shield her from all of the mess his family was creating, even if he welcomed it, an end to their constant bickering just like it was planned. So lost in his thoughts he didn’t hear Anna coming back until she was close enough to touch him.
Anna hummed a festive tune as she returned to the living room. She had decided to go ahead and change into the nighty, and cover up with the robe. The soft fur tickled her thighs lightly, adding to her brightened mood. “Well, how does it look?” she asked, standing in front of him.
Lifting his head, he looked startled from his thoughts for a moment before smiling, “Beautiful. Is it warm enough?”
“It actually is. I just need like a blanket for the rest of my legs, and I’ll be all toasty like a marshmallow,” she answered, returning to her seat next to him. She picked up her mug of hot cocoa and took a drink, now that it was more lukewarm than hot.
Pulling the blanket off the back of the couch, he draped it over their laps and pressed a kiss against her temple, “There. Safe and snug,” he said quietly.
Anna snuggled up to Gabe’s side and rested her head against his shoulder. “You didn’t have to make up our trip from Christmas. I was okay with waiting until this year to do something,” she said as she sought out his hand under the blanket, “But I love that you did this for me. Thank you.”
“I’d do anything for you, cupcake. You know that,” he said, lifting their joined hands and kissing her knuckles. “Just name it and if it doesn’t reorder the universe then it’s yours.”
.oOo.
They’d spent a lovely evening eating and sipping hot chocolate until a stray drop of the beverage on a lip led to soft kisses. Those kisses grew until there was a whirlwind of touches, sighs and sounds. Gabriel had to admit, after they were both spent, that having sex in front of the fire on a blankets was a bit cliche but he couldn’t think of any place he’d rather be. At least here in his arms, Anna was safe from Lilith and her infernal hounds.
Curled around Anna with her head pillowed on his chest, he gently ran his fingers over her spine, deep in thought and wondering how he would tell her that her friend was gone. It was half past midnight and Dean’s soul would be firmly in the clutches of the damned.
Anna had tried to stay awake, but the day had caught up to her. She’d fallen asleep minutes after the two of them wound up in each other’s arms, the warmth of Gabe and the fire sinking all the way down to her bones.
Her dreams were peaceful images of Gabe and her lounging on a beach in Greece, until they weren’t. She looked up when she heard a familiar voice crying out for help, large sunhat swirling almost comically as she looked for the source. She swore that it had sounded like Dean, but Dean shouting when Sam had gotten hurt. She was about to lay back down when a bloody image flashed next to her. Gasping, she jumped and sat up, pulling off her sunglasses to look again, but all she found was sand. She glanced back to Gabe, but he was gone, and she turned back to look for him, she wasn’t on the beach anymore. She was standing in a dark, putrid dungeon watching someone carving into a man on a slab. Inching closer, the man screamed again, and she gasped seeing it was Dean. The man behind the knife reached into a opening and ripped out what looked like a rib. Anna screamed.
In the cabin, Anna’s nightmare had caused her to whimper in her sleep, until like a switch she was screaming and struggling in Gabe’s arms.
“Anna!...Anastasia!” Gabriel all but shouted her name as he tried to keep a hold of her. He’d felt her sleeping mind shift darker toward a nightmare and had tried to soothe it away. But it had been stronger, sharper, and something he couldn’t penetrate. At least not without burning out her mind, so he was reduced to holding her gently and trying to coax her out of her state with words alone. Until she started shrieking.
Anna’s eyes flew open, but they were wild and unfocused. She ripped herself out of Gabe’s hold and scrambled to the couch, pressing herself as far into the corner as she could. She was still trapped in her nightmare. She stayed pinned against the corner of the dark room, horrified as Dean was tortured in front of her. When he was just a shell, she gasped as a sickening feeling washed over her room, and in a blink Dean was whole and breathing again. The barred door opened and invisible being began to tear at Dean’s body.
Both in dream and in the living, she let out a wail, and buried her head into her arms and knees. She slowly rocked, begging softly to wake up.
Gabriel watched with eyes wide as she cowered on the sofa. He could tell that she was awake but whatever was happening she was still witnessing. Reaching out for her with his grace he caught a glimpse of what she was seeing and knew in that moment she wasn’t having a nightmare. It was a vision.
Without another thought, he crawled up beside her and summoned his angel blade. “It’s okay, Anna. I’m here,” He said quietly as he cut open his finger enough for his vessel to bleed. Pulling back her hair, he started to draw a sigil on her neck in his own blood with quick precise movements and Enochian falling from his lips. If he couldn’t bring her out of the vision, he could block them. At least for a short time.
Anna gasped deeply, her hand snapping out to snap around Gabe’s arm, fingers digging in. She twisted to the side, her grip shaking as if the vision was trying to overcome the spell, but within seconds her whole body when lax, and she sagged forward. She was eerily quiet, save for her panting breaths, while she worked out if she was still dreaming, or if she was awake.
“It’s over, Anna,” Gabriel said calmly and gathered her up into his arms, “You’re safe and sound. Right here. I gotcha… I gotcha.”
Anna exhaled shakily before the tears started flowing. She clung to Gabe for dear life and buried her face into his chest. The nightmare had felt so real that it was like she was actually there. Dean’s screams still echoed in her ears and the smell of blood hung in her nose. “Soo..much...blood,” she muttered through her tears, “So..much..”
Gabriel pressed his cheek against the top of her head and squeezed his eyes shut as he gently rocked her. If what he saw was a fraction of what she experienced, he failed his purpose of keeping her from anything to do with this mess. “I know, Anna,” he sighed, “I didn’t know you were sensitive or that they’d exploit it. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Anna focused on Gabe to try to keep her grounded, her sobs now quieted to little gasps. She hadn’t really thought about what he was saying while trying to calm down, but now that her mind had cleared up enough to think, his words confused her. Pulling back to look at him, she looked between his eyes, wheels turning slowly. “What do you mean?” she rasped, “Why are you apologizing?”
Any other time he could have attempted to stand defiant and unwilling to reveal what had happened, even under her piercing gaze. That was before he’d watched her experience Hell and he was powerless to prevent it. He was once a General that commanded thousands of the Host who helped defeat Leviathan, but now a slip of a girl who’d given him love was able to bring him to heel with a look.
“This trip really was supposed to make up for Christmas. Just us and nothing to bother us,” He started quietly, taking her hand in his, “and if it kept you from their plans then it was a bonus.”
Anna sniffled and gently pulled out of his arms. She grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around her torso, suddenly aware of her nakedness. “Are you trying to tell me that...what I saw was real?” she asked in a quiet voice.
Gabriel was eerily quiet and nodded his head. “You’re not a prophet but you saw the pit like no living being has ever seen it.”
Anna ignored the news that prophets were a thing, and focused on the fact that she had dreamt Hell in real time. Was it a dream? A vision? She didn’t know. All she knew is that what she’d seen was terrifying, and hoped that it never happened again.
Pulling the blanket closer, she clutched the soft fabric in her fist. The images flashed across her mind. Meeting Gabe’s eye again, she took a shaky breath. “So Dean…”
“It couldn’t be stopped. He made a deal with a demon in exchange for Sam’s life,” Gabriel answered, squeezing her hand gently.
Anna shook her head and pulled away. “No, there must have been a mistake. I would have known about it. They would have told me. We would have been doing researched for the past 10 years on how to get him out of the deal. To save him. We would have done it already. I would have asked-” She cut herself off when her voice cracked.
Gabriel sank to the carpet when she pulled her hand away from him. This was the moment he’d been avoiding and he wished her own family would have had the balls to do this instead of leaving it in his hands. He was supposed to be a joy to her but now that was probably ruined forever. “A year, Anna. He only had a year,” Gabriel said, “I saw the deal written on his soul and there would have never been a way to break it. Not without killing Sam too.”
Anna stared at Gabriel and her face turned down into a frown. “You knew about it then...You’ve known for a whole year about this, and you didn’t even say anything to me!” she accused, “You don’t know that there couldn’t have been a way! I might have found a way to save him. To save both of them. But it’s too late! It’s too late because now Dean’s dead, and he’s in Hell being ripped apart, and there’s noth..nothing I can do to help.” Her eyes filled to the brim with hot, angry tears.
“One lone human against Heaven and Hell wouldn’t have made a difference.” Gabriel eased up onto the couch beside her. Looking deep into her eyes and he knew then she needed to know what had happened and what was to come, otherwise she’d just find out through these visions, “This whole thing was meant to happen since before any of you were born and they will make sure it comes to pass. Dean and Sam will be the means to bring about the end of the world. My brother Michael possessing Dean and Lucifer possessing Sam.”
Anna shook her head and turned away from him, not wanting to believe anything that he was saying. “Don’t...Gabriel, just stop...it’s..it’s not true,” she tried to convince herself, “That’s not going to happen to them. It can’t.”
“It can. It will.” he insist, “If Dean breaks the first seal it will be. And he will break that seal.” Gabriel dropped his forehead against her shoulder as his hands rested on her waist, voice dropping down to a whisper, “I tried, Anastasia. I tried to keep you safe from it. I love you and my family is so cruel. That’s why I didn’t tell you. Because how do I tell the woman that’s meant more to me than any other that my brothers are going to kill everything?”
“Don’t,” Anna hissed as stood and stepped away from him, stumbling a little over the tail of the blanket that was still stuck up on the couch. “Don’t you use your love for me as an excuse for..for lying to me.” This was all too much to have thrown at her at once. Her brain was overloaded and wanting to reject all of this new information. “If I mean so much to you, then you’d have told me all of this already. If your brothers are going to kill everything, aren’t I included in that everything? Or was your plan just to save me, and let everyone else I care about die?”
Gabriel snapped his fingers and dressing himself in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, his voice rising slightly in frustration, “Do you really think I planned all this out to get in your pants? That I wanted to love you?” he pushed himself off the couch and started pacing around, “I was perfectly happy being alone and in hiding. Then you had to summon me and be all adorable and sassy. But you don’t tell a little girl barely out of her Daddy’s arms that her world is going to go up in flames. Then you grew up and were happy and if I wanted make sure you were happy, then fine. I’m guilty. I didn’t tell you all my dirty secrets.” Gabriel shoved his hand through his hair, “I was praying to Father that it would never come to this. Not really. That He’d stop it and then you and I could… Now I don’t know what to do but hold on to what I have and hide again if I have to.”
Anna moved across the small space between them, and raised her hand, bringing it down across his face. She stayed stone faced through the pain that ran up into her wrist. She glared at him for a long moment before turning on her heel and stormed off to the bedroom, slamming the door behind her. Safe now that she was alone, she let the rest of her walls crumble, and she curled up under the covers, letting the tears and sobs flow freely. Feelings she hadn’t felt since prom night started to resurface, and she clutched her pillow closer.
He hadn’t expected her to hit him. It hurt his pride more than anything and left him stunned as he watched her retreat to the bedroom. Not until the door slamming against the frame did he break out of his stupor and look around. The cheerful fire and decorations seemed like a mockery now. He didn’t even bother to snap to make the tinsel and tree vanish like they’d never been there.
Standing in front of the bay window as the final blizzard of the year raged in the mountains around them, tears started to roll down his cheeks. There were three times in all of history that Gabriel had ever felt this low. The first he couldn’t even remember, not fully. He’d been too young. The second was the day that Lucifer was cast into the Pit and never to return. The third was today. He was sure that after today Anna would send him away and choose to face the Apocalypse or worse, try to stop it. Either way he’d lose her.
Anna’s eyes soon ran dry, and she was left with nothing but sound of the storm outside, and her own soft hiccups to block out her thoughts. They weren’t loud enough. Their argument replayed over in her mind, right up to when she’d slapped him, and stormed off. She was sure that this was the end for them. She’d finally regain her strength and she would go out to him, and he’d tell her that their relationship was just too much work, and he’d snap his fingers so she was back home.
It wasn’t until the clock on the mantle started to chime it’s announcement of the ungodly hour of the morning and the first rays of dawn started to appear that Gabriel wiped his cheeks dry. If she was going to leave him it’d be best for both of them if it was done quickly. Turning, he headed to the bedroom and decided against barging into the room, instead he knocked gently.
She was so tired, the events of the night weighing heavy on her eyelids, but every time she closed her eye, all she could see was Dean being tortured and she was awake again. The knock on the door shocked her out of her current state of half-slumber, and she sat up slowly. This was it. He was going to come in and tell her to leave and never call for him again. “Hold on,” she called out, voice rough. She quickly dressed in the pajamas she’d brought with her and returned to the bed. “Come in.”
Gabriel eased into the room and shut the door behind him. Walking across the room to the bed, he stood at the foot with his hands stuffed in his pockets, “I’ve been doing some thinking and after everything that’s happened I’ll understand if you want to go home. I’ll miss you and I won’t stop caring about you but if you want me to stay away, I’ll respect your choice. It’s the least I can do.”
Anna watched him enter room, but turned her eyes to her lap as he spoke, not wanting to look at him when he told her to get out. But that didn’t quite happen. Finally turning her gaze up to meet his, she looked between his eyes, as if trying to find the answer to her unspoken question in them. “Do you want me to go home?” she asked.
“No,” he answered simply before sitting on the edge of the bed, “I think that’s how I got us in this mess. I didn’t want to let you go, but I won’t stop you if it’s what you really want.”
She didn’t move from her spot when he sat down, but they were now close. Knee to thigh close. “I don’t want to,” she said, then confirmed, “I don’t want to leave you.”
Gabriel turned his head and studied her for a moment, looking for some indication that she didn’t mean what she said. “Say it again?” he asked softly.
Anna reached out and placed her hand on his knee. “I don’t want to leave you, Gabriel,” she repeated, “I love you too much to ever want to leave.” She raised her hand and gently brushed her fingers over the cheek that she’d struck. You’d never know she’d done it if it wasn’t for the small scratch across his cheekbone. “I’m sorry for hitting you. I shouldn’t have ever done it.”
“I’ve been slapped before. Maybe for more fun reasons, but… “ Gabriel said with a wane smile, “At least you didn’t stab me.”
“I still shouldn’t have done it. I even scratched you,” she protested, starting to look a little distraught.
Gabriel lifted his hand to touch his cheek. Pulling his finger away he saw a few flakes of dried blood. He hadn’t even noticed it’d happened otherwise he would have healed it by now. Looking up he saw her looking miserable for such a small injury. Leaning forward and kissing the end of her nose, he pulled her into his lap as the scratch healed itself.
Anna let her hands rest against his shoulders and examined the spot where the scratch had been. She brushed away the leftover small flakes of dried blood before leaning in and kissing the spot. She placed a few more kissed on his cheek before wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her forehead against his shoulder. “I’m sorry that I got so upset…”
“You saw Hell itself and then I laid a bunch on you,” Gabriel whispered to her and kissed her temple.
Anna pulled back to look at him, she spoke, “I do have something I want to say, but I don’t want you to interrupt me.”
“Okay,” he said slowly.
She pulled his hands so they rested in front of her, and held them in hers. “Gabriel, no matter what happens between us, I want you to know that I’ll always love you, and that I’ll never leave you unless you wish it. I think that maybe we should consider discussing some of our darker secrets so that arguments like the one we had won’t happen again.” She brought his hands up to place kisses on his knuckles.
Gabriel took a deep breath and nodded, “I’ll agree to that but my stories might take a long time to tell.”
Anna gave his hands a reassuring squeeze. “I still want to hear about them. To know more about you,” she smiled softly up at him.
“Alright,” Gabriel agreed, “But you need to get some sleep first. It’s been a really long night.”
At the mention of sleep, her smile wavered. “I'm fine. I took a couple short naps earlier,” she fibbed.
Knowing her well enough to tell when she was covering up, Gabriel brushed the hair from her face as he asked, “Having flashbacks?”
She looked down to the collar of his shirt and nodded, then shrugged. “I can't stop seeing it,” she admitted, “And I'm afraid of what else I'm going to see when I do fall asleep. He…” Anna clenched her jaw and shook her head a little. “I can't fall asleep anyway. I keep waking myself up.”
“Lay down with me anyway,” Gabriel said as he pulled off his t-shirt, “Resting is better than nothing.”
Anna nodded and moved off of his lap. She scooted to the middle of the bed and slipped under the blanket. She'd suddenly gotten a chill, and she blamed the storm outside. Shuffling down, she settled into the pillows and waited for him to join her.
He turned off the bedside lamp and crawled into the bed. Gathering her up into his arms, he made sure that they were both well covered before using his grace to block out the the memory of her vision and hopefully stop her from receiving any new images. Once they were settled, he confessed one of the thoughts he’d had while staring at the snow, “I’ll take you and your father to Asgard if need be. You’ll be safe. And then you and me could… we could be together.”
Being back in his arms this way was a better comfort than just the blanket could provide. She could already feel her eyes growing heavy from her exhaustion. When she closed her eyes, there were no horrid images, just sweet darkness.
Hearing him speak, she forced herself to stay awake long enough to hear what he had to say. Taking his hand and twining their fingers together between them, she squeezed his fingers. “Will we get to meet Thor and Odin?” the barest of teasing smiles on her lips.
“Yes, but they don’t look anything like they do in the movies,” Gabriel snorted, “I’m the cutest out of the lot of them.”
She hummed her amusement. “I don't doubt that for a second,” she said, her speech starting to trail off at the end, “Are there any single older women up there?”
“A few, but if you’re asking for yourself, the Valkyrie will love you but they’ll have to fight me for a night with you,” Gabriel teased, “I don’t share easily.”
Anna smiled and tapped his fingers. “While that seems like an interesting time, I meant for my dad.”
“Valkyries would eat him up. Then again, he might like it.” Gabriel pressed a kiss to the back of her head, “Try to sleep, Anastasia. We can fix your Dad up later.”
Anna chuckled and large yawn caught her off guard. “Okay. Sounds good to me,” she agreed. Closing her eyes once again she whispered, “Night Gabby.”
Even though she couldn’t see them, Gabriel draped his wings over her and held on tight, determined to protect her even from the nightmares in her head, “Sleep well, Cupcake. I’ll be right here when you wake up.”
Anna finally allowed herself to get some sleep, knowing she was safe in Gabe's arms. Her darkness shifted into a peaceful dream about the two of them on a road trip through purple fields of lavender.

Papa Bear
Mum had been shouting at her again, all because of that man, she hated her stepdad and how he thought he could take over their lives. He couldn’t take the place of her dad and she didn’t know why he thought he could. Who’d he think he was telling her what to do?
“You should know better than that Beatrice, how could say such rude things about your dad,” her mum yelled, hands on her hips.
“He isn’t my dad so don’t call him that, my dad’s dead nobody can take his place, so there,” Beatrice yelled back her face contorted into a snarl.
Her mother turned back to the sink her back straight as a rod and continued to angrily wash the dirty dishes banging and clanging them onto the draining board. She wore that stupid apron with big red hearts all over it that he had bought her for Valentines’ Day. That man who thought her mother should be at home all day doing the housework and cooking.
Who the heck did he think he was?  Before he came along they used to do things together mum and her. They’d go into town on Saturdays, on the new yellow trams that would throw them into each other as it turned the corners too fast. The’d look in all the shops, trying on girlie things, new clothes and bags n stuff. Sometimes they’d even go get their nails done in crazy colors like shocking pink or electric blue, at that little Filipino nail place, that stank of that stuff they used to remove old nails. After that they’d go to the Bolero café in the new shopping mall, the one with the big three D cinema inside and stuff themselves with cream cakes. Now her mum was always too busy running around after him to do anything with her. She didn’t care anymore, Beatrice thought.
“Oh I have to get the dinner on he will be home soon,” her mum would say, running around like a headless chicken.
What on earth had happened to her real mum? Her friend Jackie’s mum never ran around like that after Jackie’s dad.
“Lazy sod,” she would say, “let him get his own slippers out,” pointing to the cupboard under the stairs.
Why couldn’t my mum stand up for herself she was more like a maid, she thought as she looked out of the window at the grey clouds hanging low like a shroud over her world.
“Mum,” she said almost pleadingly, “you’re like his servant.”
Mum spun around and glared at her again, she was never happy these days, maybe she would be happier without me around, Beatrice thought to herself. Staring at the green scuffed tiles on the kitchen floor.
“You don’t know anything do you? You’re only twelve years old for goodness sake,” mum said sadly shaking her head as she wiped her wet frothy hands on the front of her apron. “Why can’t you just do as you’re told”?
Beatrice spun around her long thick braid swinging out as her body turned, and sped out of the house into the darkness, streetlights were just blinking one by one as she ran down the street, breath catching in her throat as she tried to run and breath at the same time, tears mingling with the snot running from her nose into her mouth, it tasted salty but Beatrice didn’t care.
“I’ll teach them, they’ll miss me when I’m gone,” she whispered under her breath panting as she ran, she wiped her mouth and nose on her sleeve just like her mum always told her not to do. “See, I can do whatever I want, you can’t tell me what to do anymore,” she said under her breath. She kept on running, passed the small school shadowy in the deepening gloom, then further down the road she ran past the working men’s club. The light pouring out making it look like it had two sets of windows, one in the walls and one on the sidewalk. Yeah her stepdad was probably in there having a few beers before going home. His dinner would be ready, the smell of meat and onions floating through the house. Always served at 6pm on the dot, every night.
Beatrice came to the cemetery and ran through the rusty old iron gates racing down the gravel path, the sound of her feet scrunching on the small pebbles echoed into the twilight. She only stopped when she reached her dad. She stood looking down her chest rising and falling trying to catch her breath, and knelt gently down beside his grave. As she sank into the softness of the ground she leant her arm on the cold granite stone resting her head on her arm Smelling the soft wet earth and grass reminding her of when he used to cut the grass on a Sunday afternoon.
“Oh dad, why dya have to leave?” she sobbed, her voice cracking like the dried branches of the trees she sat beneath, “nothings the same now, she married that awful man, how could she?” she hiccupped, “how could she put someone else in your place dad? I miss you like crazy, nothings ever gonna be the same. Why dya you have to go?” she spat angrily punching the soft earth beside the grave. “He doesn’t read me stories like you use to, or tell me stuff about when he was little like you did. He doesn’t take me to the pictures on a Saturday morning to watch the funniest movies ever, letting me stuff myself silly with popcorn. You used to laugh at me when I felt sick and say, ‘that’ll teach you’!!! I’m not going back dad, I’m not, I’m gonna go to grans house,” she sobbed into her arm, shoulders heaving and shivering in the cold. After a while Beatrice stood up wiped the tears and snot again on her cardigan sleeve, thinking how much her mum would disapprove of that and not caring. She blew her dad a kiss and started walking.
She walked steadily out of the silent cemetery, turned left and kept going, marching with a purpose past the shops. All closed now their shutters down, looking like blank faces staring indifferently at her as if to lock her out, just like her mums blank face didn’t see her anymore. She thought, how will I get to grans? Its miles away I’ve got no money on me for a bus, I’ll just have to walk. She left the town behind and carried on through the now dark countryside, darkness closing in around her like a giant cloak. It was spooky for a young girl on her own, she kept looking into the trees that lined the side of the road. Imagining shadows moving around in the darkness as the trees swayed in the cool night breeze, she had never felt so scared.
She heard an engine in the distance and as a big truck turned the corner it caught her in its headlights, her heart beat faster and shrank in her chest as if someone was squeezing it into a little ball. She couldn’t move, frozen to the spot like an ice sculpture, fear closing her throat. A little girl alone on a dark country road .The truck stopped and she was actually relieved to hear her stepdads voice.
“Beatrice, come on get in what are you doing way out here by yourself? your mums worried sick, she sent me out to look for you. Come on get in,” he said again, in a concerned voice his head and arm poking out of the window, white hair gleaming in the moonlight.
Slowly she walked around the tall truck and clambered in shoulders hunched, frowning because she was half angry and half ashamed for worrying her mum, the familiar smell of the red leather seats gave her a safe feeling as it assaulted her nostrils.
“You know your mum is beside herself with worry,” he looked at her sideways. “I know it’s not easy for you, but it’s not easy for any of us to try to make a new family work,” he said, as he started to drive the truck into the darkness, the headlights catching rabbits in its beam as they raced this way and that in the road trying not to get run over by the truck.
Beatrice looked out of the window, arms crossed not knowing what to say. So she just watched the trees go by in a dark blur.
“I can understand how you feel Beatrice, really I can. I know you think I’m trying to take the place of your dad but I could never do that, I understand he was your dad,” he said, talking softly as he stared straight ahead at the road.
Beatrice slunk further down in her seat, feeling her face go pink with embarrassment because he knew how she felt.
“I can’t replace your dad, and I know that you will feel guilty if you let me into your heart a little. But you know I feel guilty too, when my little girl died I thought I would die as well. It’s just as hard for me to get close to you too, because no one could ever take her place in my heart.”
Beatrice frowned and she chewed on her bottom lip the way she always did when she was concentrating hard. Thinking how it must feel to lose a small kid, she couldn’t imagine how that would feel she was just a kid herself. How would her mum feel if something happened to her? Beatrice’ heart sank. His heart must have broken into zillions and zillions of pieces, she thought. It must have horrible to lose a kid.
“Maybe we can try to make a new place in our hearts for each other,” he said softly, “like a separate place, and grow from there, you know. Get to know each other and let ourselves start to love again without the fear of losing that love.”
Beatrice turned to actually look at her stepdad, and sat up a bit straighter, she had never thought of that.
“You can come up with a name for me that you’re comfortable with if you like,” He said, glancing over towards her briefly, “Did you ever notice how my friends call me papa?  It’s because they think of me like a big fat papa bear who cares about everyone. And I care about you too Beatrice, I just didn’t know how to reach out to you,” he said calmly, shrugging his shoulders.
She had never realized before what a nice voice he had, and that, yes all his friends and their kids did call him Papa.
“Papa,” she said, whispering under her breath.
           “Yes, papa,” he repeated.
“Ok,” she said, as her little twelve year old voice waivered, “Let’s try that.”
As they drove towards home, they reached out to each other slowly, and he clasped her small hand in his big warm papa bear hands. Beatrice continued to stare out of the side window a warm feeling hugging her heart. Her stepdad staring straight ahead as he drove, both of them with small smiles of hope on their faces and an atmosphere of optimism in the dark cab of the truck.

Penelope Part 4
Penelope Part 4
Mom insisted on checking the locks on the doors of the house, despite Penelope's urging her to "Hurry up, would you?" In the car, Mom put the key in the ignition and the car came to life. The cockpit screen lit up and the car did its self diagnostic check. Penelope glanced at the dashboard and said “We only have half a tank of fuel. Wait, I'll get the gas can from the mower. Dad just had it filled before the SHTF.” Her mother automatically scolded her. “Watch your mouth little girl. I don’t like you using language like that! Go ahead and get the gas can.” Penelope yelled back," I am not a little girl! I am 15 years old! And how can you worry about my language at a time like this? God, Mom!" She put the gas can in the back seat and used the seatbelt to keep it stable. Her mom pushed the button for the garage door. Nothing happened. She tried it again. Still nothing happened. “OH GOD!” her mother shouted “I forgot the power is out! We're trapped!” Penelope calmly replied, “Relax mom, I got this.” She jumped out of the car and pulled the cord for the emergency garage door release, then ran over to the garage door and heaved it open. “You are a pretty smart girl, honey,” her mother said with a smile. Easing the car out of the garage, she waited while Penelope pulled the garage door shut and got in.
Driving slowly through their neighborhood, they were shocked to see that many homes had been vandalized. Windows were broken, furniture was strewn in the yards and papers were blowing down the street. Some homes had graffiti painted on the outside, and the pungent stench of rotting garbage was horrible. They could see some people staring out of their windows with stunned expressions on their faces. A scrawny man was going through a pile of trash, possibly looking for food or something he could trade for food. There were several over turned cars, and a few blackened cars that looked like they had been torched. Penelope and her Mom were very subdued, staring at the destruction in horror.
As they turned out of their neighborhood, Penelope remembered something else that Joe had told her. “Mom don’t take the highway. We have to head south and the back roads will be safer. We have to get on old route 28.” She explained that she had left a note for her Dad back at the house. "I told him we are heading south to get out of the city and away from danger, and that we would follow Old Route 28.” Old Route 28 was only a few miles away.
In another part of the city, an injured man hid in the foyer of a now abandoned apartment building. He had been severely beaten, and slashed across his chest with a knife.  His leg was crushed and lay at an unnatural angle. Feverish and in pain, he lifted his head up and looked out the open door, barely able to focus. After three days in hiding, with no food or water, he had little hope than anyone would come along to help him. There were several stinking corpses just outside the door. The stench was unbearable. He watched as dogs circled the bodies and growled at each other. He weakly clutched a stick to beat off the rats and dogs if they got too close. He finally accepted that his death was imminent.  As he drew his  last breath, he whispered “Penelope, I am so sorry I failed you. I love you.” His head slumped into his chest and his lifeless body slid down the wall. All he had done was try to find a few bits of food and a few bottles of water for his family.
Penelope’s mother drove slowly as they came up to the intersection of route 81. There were no other moving cars on the road, but off to one side were several wrecked cars and a smoldering police car that was over turned and set on fire. After crossing the intersection, she accelerated a bit. The onboard computer screen showed that the engine was now charging the batteries that drove the electric motors of the Prius. She breathed a prayer, thanking God that she did not have to worry about using her spare gas yet. She and Penelope talked quietly about how shocked they were at how a once beautiful community had quickly degraded into a ghetto. Cars on the side of the road had been stripped of tires, doors, fenders, engines, and seats. The windows of the cars were smashed. Some of the cars had blood on the floors. They passed a restaurant they used to go to that sat between the sub-divisions. The parking lot was filled with broken dishes, and the sun glistened off silverware scattered about.  Empty boxes and cans blew across the parking lot in the breeze, which also brought the smell of rotting garbage.  “God, that stinks!” Penelope said as they accelerated to get away from the smell.
Joe was driving the Tank hard and fast on Route 28. The Holly 4 barrel carburetor was sucking gas as he hit 75 miles per hour. Joe knew the road like the back of his hand, having driven it twice every weekend when he worked in Waynesboro. There were 3 small towns he passed through in a 140 mile stretch. The locals were friendly and he knew some of them. He wondered if they were OK. He was getting closer to the city every minute. Now he had to become even more alert. Slowing down to make the turn, he took a back road that Mary once showed him to avoid traffic. It would bring him through one more sub-division then across route 81, and then it will be a only a few miles to his old neighborhood, and Penelope’s house.
Penelope’s mom passed through the brick entrance to the last subdivision before they hit the main road. She slowed down because it was just as bad as their neighborhood. Deserted cars were parked on both sides of the street. They saw more homes that had been vandalized. There were more broken windows, furniture strewn in the yards, and the pungent stench of rotting garbage hung in the air.  “Damn,” her mother said, “will we ever get past that smell?” Penelope snidely muttered, "Now who's swearing?" They were both wide eyed at the changes that had taken place only 14 days after the SHTF. Penelope thought back to her conversations with Joe, and realized that nothing he said could have prepared her for this.  In fact, all he ever said was that it would be "hell on earth.” They snaked slowly through the street that went from one end of the subdivision to the other. It was deadly quiet. It was so quiet you could hear the crunch of dirt under the tires of the car. The sky was clear and if it weren't for the stench it would be a nice day. They passed a side street and continued straight. After they passed, a pickup truck pulled out and blocked the road behind them. Mom stepped on the gas but had to slam on the brakes because another car had pulled out in front of them also. The trap was cleverly set because there was no way to get around with the parked cars on the sides of the street. Two men emerged from the car in front of them, and one approached from the truck in back. Penelope saw that they were dirty, unshaven, and mean looking. They were carrying pipes that they were tapping in the palm of their hand. Guns were strapped to their waist. Both Penelope and her mother started to shake from the adrenalin rush as it surged through their bodies. One guy yelled, “Nice car, why don’t you get out so we can talk?” Penelope’s mother would not make eye contact and stared straight ahead looking for a way to escape. “I said get out of the car now!” he yelled as he slammed his club across the hood of the car, making them both jump in fear. “Nice looking little girl you have, I wonder if she is still a virgin?” another creepy man said. “Not for long," laughed the third guy. “OK let's do this the hard way,” the first guy said as he smashed the driver’s side window, reached in and unlocked her door, and grabbed Penelope’s mother, dragging her out of the car. He pushed her against the car, holding her there with his body as the cuts on her face bled freely. The second man reached in across the small car and grabbed Penelope by her hair, pulling her through the car and out the driver’s side door as she kicked and screamed. The third man looked in the back seat and said “Hey guys, look what we have here! Gas, clothes, and even food! We got a nice car, except for the dent you put in the hood, and two beautiful ladies!” The second guy started to rub on Penelope. Her mother yelled “Leave my daughter alone, you pig!” The first guy said, “What did you say, bitch?” In a louder voice, she screamed, “LEAVE MY DAUGHTER ALONE, YOU PIG!” He drew his arm back and hit her hard across the face, making her lip bleed as she struggled to free herself.
Joe eased off the gas as he entered the Sub-division. Dora was riding shotgun as she always did with her head hanging out the window. "Nice thing about Dora is she goes anywhere you want and she never complains,” thought Joe.  He started to ease around a corner, and suddenly cut the ignition off as he looked through the shrubbery. He saw that the road was blocked off and there were three men abusing two women. He recognized Penelope’s mothers car, and his heart sunk as he saw it was Penelope and her Mom. The Tank coasted to a stop behind a few bushes.
The men were becoming more violent, and Penelope’s mother became even more defiant. “LEAVE HER ALONE! SHE IS JUST A KID!” She screamed as she lunged at the second guy! The first guy drew his pistol, grabbed Penelope’s mother by the arm and swung her around to face him. She slapped him hard across the face, cutting his face with her nails. Joe heard one shot and Penelope’s mother slumped to the ground. The men started to laugh as Penelope rushed to her mother.  Joe had seen enough. He grabbed his .308 FAL, checked the chamber and made sure the safety was off. He called to Dora, who hopped out of the Tank with Joe's backup weapon strapped to her vest. She stayed close to Joe as he crouched into position to get a clean shot. BAM! The first round went off hitting the gunman in the back of the neck. He folded to the ground like a house of cards. BAM! The second shot hit the third guy in the middle of the chest. The second guy grabbed Penelope and pulled her close to him as a human shield. Joe emerged from the bushes and slowly walked forward pointing a Beretta PX4 Storm at the last man standing. Holding Penelope in front of him, the man shouted "I will kill this little bitch, I swear!” Joe kept walking closer. As he got closer, he urged the man to let the girl go. He pointed his Beretta at the man’s head. “What are you some kind of asshole, man? I will blow this bitches head off before you know it.” The man stood at least 6 foot 2 inches tall which gave Joe the advantage. Penelope was only about 5 foot 4, and Joe had a clear shot to his head. Joe continued to walk closer. The two men were now within 20 feet of each other. The man said “Are you fricken nuts?" And before he could complete his sentence a shot rang  out and the man fell to the ground dead. Penelope screamed and cried, running for her Mother. "MOM, MOM!" she cried hysterically as she crouched over her mother's still form.  “Come on we have to go,” Joe said as he tried to get Penelope to focus on him. She clutched her mother’s lifeless body. Joe grabbed her and dragged her to the Tank. He lifted Penelope into the front seat and fastened her seat belt as she cried hysterically. He whistled and Dora came running. She jumped up onto the floor in front of Penelope, and then onto the seat between Penelope and Joe. Joe asked Penelope “Are you hurt?” She did not answer, just hugged Dora and sobbed.

Lifestyle: Buying a New Car
I grew up in Michigan, which you can read about extensively in this post. Everyone in Michigan either was employed by the auto industry (working for the Big 3 – GM, Chrysler, or Ford, as the case was in the ‘90s) or had family who worked in the auto industry. To this day, I know I’m in Michigan because of the lack of foreign cars on the road. I remember people would make racial slurs to my mom for the three years she owned a Toyota Camry, because it was more acceptable to say a racist comment than to drive a foreign car.
As a side note, I went to school in East Lansing from 2004 to 2008. This was when it was becoming mainstream to pay an obscene amount for drip coffee, a trend which continues to this day. East Lansing was home to a startup coffee chain called Beaners. I shit you not. Beaners experienced massive growth in Michigan and started to look to national expansion. They tried to enter into the Texas market. Allegedly the Texas powers-that-be said you can’t have a coffee shop that is named Beaners in Texas. Turns out that this is a racial slur for the migrant workers. Calling a shop this would alienate a good portion of the population. The company has since changed its name to Biggby (pronounced “Big B”) and claim the change had nothing to do with how offensive the name was. Which shows why people in Michigan thought it was okay to tell my mom she drove a rice racer because her car was Japanese.
But I digress. My aunt and grandfather both had worked for GM and my mother’s childhood best friend’s husband was a co-owner of a car dealership (did you follow that?). A person who retires from GM is granted a discount for him/her and their family for life. Because of this, it was insane for our family not to drive GM cars.*
When I turned sixteen, Katrina had conveniently totaled the little Mazda MX3 my dad had bought for her from a woman he worked with. The woman had kept it in mint condition, barely putting miles on it, and my dad got it for a song. One missed stop sign and the car was kaput. Because Katrina was a senior in high school and would be going to Michigan State the next year where she wouldn’t be allowed to have a car, my parents thought it’d be prudent to get us a car we could share for a year and then I could have it to myself my senior year. That’s how we got a year-old silver Pontiac Grand Am. And aside from feigning heartburn at the injustice of it all,** that car would take us all the way through college and follow me to my first year in Minnesota.
The first spring I lived in Minnesota, I had agreed to give my car to my sister, who had finished her MBA and was moving out to Virginia for her first job. This meant I needed a new car. Up until this point, the most I had ever spent on any single purchase was a $200 purse. I came out of undergrad with $20,000 of student loan debt and dumbly chose to live in a brand new apartment in the coolest neighborhood that literally cost more than one of my paychecks. I had no money to put down on a car and the idea of buying anything, let alone taking on yet another loan, made me sick to my stomach. I stayed up many nights talked to Steve about it, whom I had just started dating, and whom has always been much more frugal than me. For instance, he lived with his dad for a few years after undergrad so stockpiled an amount of cash. His favorite activity on the weekend is to determine just how much we’ll be able to save in the coming year and at what age we can retire. He offered to co-sign the loan for me, something I’d obviously need, being “cash poor” as the lady at the bank would later describe me to my dad. On principle, I couldn’t have a man I just started dating as my co-signer (I couldn’t think to the next week, why would I be beholden to this dude for five years?) so I had my dad sign.
The car I chose? A year-old silver Pontiac G6 with 22,000 miles on it. This is the car that replaced the Grand Am, because even though I no longer lived in Michigan, why would I ever buy anything other than American? Also the idea of doing research and going from dealership to dealership seemed daunting and not the same pastime activity in Minnesota as it was in Michigan. Don’t worry, this wasn’t an exact replica of the car I had just driven to my sister. This car was a very practical two-door, my statement to the world that I wasn’t planning to get married or have kids cause they couldn’t fit anyway. I chose it because I thought the trunk was cute. “I like its butt,” I told the salesman.
Fast forward to November 2018. I still have the G6. In the 9.5 years I’ve had the car, I’ve put a whopping 45,000 miles on it, meaning I never drive the thing. The furthest distances she traveled were two trips to Michigan, three trips to Milwaukee, and one time to Chicago. Only recently did I start driving her with any regularity, which is because I finally got access to Target’s restricted parking lot (you can reminisce about my first month parking there here). On an average day, my driving is 3-5 miles round trip. It’s less than two miles total to get to and from work, and if I throw in a class at OrangeTheory, I top out at five miles total.
Do you remember what it’s like to drive around in a 2009 model? There’s no back-up camera. There’s no keyless engine start. There’s no input for a phone to connect and certainly no Bluetooth. The dashboard is digital but not a touchscreen. It’s basically the Stone Age.
But back to money. A lot of people will say that they don’t buy cars because they don’t invest in depreciating assets. Which like, fuck off. If you’re leasing your BMW 5Series every three years that means you’re paying $500+ per month every month with no end. You’re pissing away money that could be used on literally anything else.
I always said I’d keep my car until it was ten years old or hit 100,000 miles, whichever came first, which, based on my habits, is clearly going to be the former versus the latter. Also, though, I really don’t like having a car payment so my intention was to drag this baby out as long as I could and start doing some initial research this spring.
But, like any long-term relationship, my car required some TLC recently. I was driving her when the “Service Tire Monitor” light came on. At the time, it was winter in Minnesota and air pressure in tires is a real thing, so being able monitor the pressure is something, but this seemed more like a nice-to-have, versus a need-to-have. So I put it off. I should also note that the only other time this light came on, I was driving down the road (not the highway, thank God) and the car just completely shut down in the middle of traffic. It was able to turn back on but it did it again a second time. As I learned while running, the symptom is not usually the cause and the car’s computer had to be reset – nothing to do with the tire monitor at all. One might think that story would have led me to quicker action this time around, but it did not.
On a November weekend, I went to a suburb for new running shoes (as discussed here). I was forced to take the scenic route home, because the road to the highway was blocked by some random festival. I had to go through a neighboring suburb where I could catch the highway. As I got close to the highway, literally every light on my dashboard – Check ABS, Check Airbag, Traction Control Off – started flashing.
I was nervous, but not overly concerned, and called Steve, who was watching Purdue football. “All the lights on my dashboard are on and flashing,” I started in.
“Uh huh,” he said, distracted, over the sounds of football in the background.
“Well, I just wanted you to know that if I die, this is why.”
“Okay – I’m going to go back to watching the game,” he hung up, unconcerned.
I figured that since things were going nuts and I clearly needed to reset my car’s computer, I might as well call Firestone. I explained what was going on with my car and asked if they’d have any availability today.
“No. Actually the earliest we can get you in is Monday,” the Firestone man informed me.
“Can I just drop it off today? She’s no good to me – actually,” I cut myself off. “My car is shutting down now. I need to call someone who can help me. Bye.”
My car completely died in a busy intersection. I tried to turn my car to the side street but only managed to be at a sight angle causing a backup in traffic. I tried turning the car on and off many times over, but nothing was happening. Now, I was panicked. I put my hazards on and started sweating. I called Steve, unclear what to do in this situation.
“Now don’t get mad, but, did you try turning it off and on?” Helpful.
“Yes. Duh. Many times. It won’t go back on. I have my hazards on but people keep honking. What do I do?” I was starting to freak, picturing that my death would not be because my car blew up on me, but rather because the cars behind me would not notice and crash into me.
“Uh…well…umm…” I could hear his brain working but also thought that maybe something was happening in the game.
“I’m going to call someone who can help me. Bye,” and I very aggressively hung up the phone on my husband.
I was able to get a tow truck and three really kind men who were walking by pushed my car out of the intersection and into a parking spot. One even started yelling at the people who were honking as he helped. Like the completely sane, rational, strong, independent woman I am, after the men saw I was safe and went back about their day, I started crying.
To move the story along, my tow truck friend Kyle delivered my G6 to the Firestone I had called previously. I called to alert them and miraculously they now had time to fix my car that day. Steve came and got me – I apparently told him the wrong intersection so not only did he have to leave the game, he was sent to the wrong place, so he scolded me for that upon arrival. I apologized but also reminded him that I was a little distracted.
All in, my car needed a new alternator, battery, spark plugs, and fuel flush. It cost me $1000. Everyone told me that was high and Steve had been able to get them to drop off a whopping $50, but as I asked everyone who offered their armchair quarterback advice, what leverage did I have?
The following Tuesday morning, I was driving my car to OrangeTheory when the Service Tire Monitor light came on, again. This time, I was no fool. I called the Firestone guys on my way back home post-class and they told me to bring it in. The man on the phone let me know that checking tire pressure is complimentary.
Great, sir, but when the air pressure needs to be checked, a light comes on that says, “Check Air Pressure,” not “Service Tire Monitor.” I had to explain this twice, but they ignored me and sent me out to the garage to have a mechanic check the air pressure, because what do I know? I’m just the girl who cries when people are kind to strangers and who overpays for auto repair.
Turns out my air pressure was just fine, but, wouldn’t you know it? One of the tire monitors was out. Don’t worry, that was another $250.
All in all, I decided that I at least needed to get my money’s worth and drive my car through the spring, which will be its ten-year anniversary. Then I will begin the hunt for a new car.
On my list? Unfortunately, Pontiac has since been discontinued by General Motors. An Audi Q5, Jaguar E-Pace, and Infiniti QX50. For the first time, I’m going foreign. And I will be looking to lease, not only because that car payment is so much cheaper, but also because, when the Service Tire Monitor light comes on, someone else will pay the $1250.
*This obviously didn’t stop my mom from not only owning the aforementioned Camry, but also a Ford van (not a mini-van because apparently owning a mini-van is worse than owning one of those huge vans with the sliding doors that pedophiles drive around in).
**Really my brothers should be the ones complaining. Keith, the eldest, had to buy the Beretta he drove with money he collected from the paper route. He would later inherit my mom’s Ford van, which turns out is the exact wrong thing to give a high schooler unless you want to promote kids getting drunk in the spacious back area. My other brother, Kent, drove a Dodge Diplomat which was more or less a land yacht. It had this big, cushy leather seats that could fit two people each and, unfortunately, the heater only worked sporadically – a problem in Michigan winters – and when it did work, it’d make a really loud noise. He’d proceed to hit the dashboard hard with his fist until the sound stopped. I think a barely used Grand Am to share with my sister was luxury.

Health insurance and pre-existing conditions.?
Hello, question. If I have health insurance now, find out I have a condition, then get a different job and change health insurance, am I in the pre-existing condition status with the new insurance? I'm curious because as of now the only reason I keep my health insurance is just in case as with any insurance and I don't want to have to pick up insurance after finding out something is wrong, as I understand it doesn't work that way, that's the catch. However, what if I find a condition while I have insurance, go off of it between jobs and get insurance back? Does that mess with things? Is there a way around it? Thanks""

""CAR INSURANCE FOR A 17-YEAR-OLD, 5000 quotes. Genuinely can't find any quotes less than 5000.?""
1.3 KA 2002, immobiliser, no tracker fitted yet (intend on). Not bought the car. 17-year-old as the main driver and owner, passed a month ago (roughly). I know it's obvious, but KAs are the easiest cars to buy, the car is valued at 995 (the one in mind). I can literally find 5000 quotes. The car is worth less than one fifth of this. And yes, I know that car insurance will be expensive, but reading over forums etc, some people have managed to get it down to 2000. I've tried Diamond, elephant, comparethemarket, gocompare, literally everywhere. Admiral won't give me a quote and places like Tesco will only quote 18-year-olds. I will literally LOVE anyone who knows of any quotes around 2000-3000. And I realise that insurance companies take the Michael, but please don't state the obvious with a comment like Insurance will be expensive - 5000 is about right , surely it can't be, I've found so many forums of people saying they have quotes from 2000, but not telling me where from. ):""
Renewing car insurance?
My car insurance is up for renewal in January and I have been looking quotes up on the internet. But when it asks for the period of licence held for I put 0 years as I passed my test in July but my car was insured in my name from january when I was on a provisional. I then put that I have 1 years no claims as I havn't claimed in the year that I've had the car insurance but it won't accept it as it says I can' have no claims that is greater than the period i've held my license for. So do I put that i've had my license for a year (which would include the provisional period) or do I put that I havn't got any no claims. Thank's in advance.

I also need to get my GED, which I start taking classes for that next fall.. because I dropped out of school for specific reasons I wont talk about here. ""Trying to save on car insurance, who should I go with?""
Currently I pay $122.00 for car insurance with State Farm. This is going to go up I am sure since I moved back to a larger city and when I lived here before I was paying a lot more. Oh and I also have renters for about 10 bucks a month.... okay so I just was quoted by Gieco with lower deductibles, from the more expensive city and I was quoted at about $68 (without the renters) Thoughts on the matter, is this possible should I make the switch? ok the situation is like this. my family has two cars. (maxima and accent) I (21years old) use the accent and my parents use the maxima. All three of us are under the same insurance plan. I might sell the accent and buy a used car and pay monthly(financing). so that means the insurance has to be full coverage right? and not liability. Where can I find affordable health insurance?
Where can I find affordable health insurance without a deductible that makes it pointless to have insurance? We live in Nampa Idaho. We are on a tight budget but I can probably make room for a couple hundred dollars. I would need family coverage for myself, husband and 2 year old daughter. I have tried looking around online and all of the insurance plans are about $400+ a month and still have a deductible of $2500+ per person. Car insurance - change of address?
Hi. Recently i changed my address so i had to let the car insurance company know about that. But they charged(actually are willing to chage) me 423 pounds !! Yes, there's not a misspeling. It's 423 . As far as i ve seen, most people get charged no maximum than 50 pounds for this change. Also, there are no changes on my policy. I still have a garage, i still do the same mileage/year and so on. They even confirmed that there's no change in policy details except the new address. The new address it's in Manchester (central area) and before i lived in Bradford(UK). Now, in the mean time, i had a claim. If i would have found about this fee before, i would have cancel my insurance policy but now that i have a claim, i can't cancel it anymore and being refunded (as i paid the insurance for 1 year in one go, Not monthly). I found about this crazy 423 fee only now when i had this claim. You can't find anything about any fees related to changing the address neither on my policy papers nor on their website and online policy books. I suppose they considered this fee just as an administration fee. And i suppose they could have charged me even 10 000 pounds as an administration fee just because they can. I don't feel protected by the company anymore !! that's why it's an insurance company, to protect and take some risks out. The insurance company it's Admiral. I tryed to talk and explain them that this fee it's just nuts but they didn't agreed. The fee it's about 1/4 of the total insurance cost for 1 year. Maybe they try to take advantage of the fact that i can't cancel it (coz i have a claim in process) and i can't get refunded ? Any ideea how should i proceed ? Shall i proceed with any legal actions ? if yes, how much time and money would that cost because i wouldn't go into, i don't think it's worth doing that. Thanks in advance :) Cheers!""

""No insurance car accident, wasn't my fault, other insurance company demands payment. What can I do?""
Hello, I need some advice. About 5 months ago, I was in a car accident where I had borrowed my brother's car to run a quick errand. I was not covered on the insurance for the vehicle. I was in a parking lot going straight about 15mph and another car from a feeder lane made a quick left turn (there was a stop sign for her) without paying attention and there was a collision. As far as I can tell, in this type of collision (left turn into a thoroughfare from a feeder) fault lies 100% with the other driver (as far as insurance goes). Today, I received a letter from a collection agency representing the other driver's insurance company demanding $10,000 in damages for repairs. They claim that the facts state that as a result of MY negligence I am responsible for the damages incurred. I cannot afford this. I don't know what to do. How is this my fault? Don't isurance companies follow specific fault determination rules? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you. I know I shouldn't have been driving that car. Only helpful answers please.""

It is V8 Automatic, 2 doors, I have taken a Self Defensive Driving class, and I am currently 16 years old (I turn 17 in a few months). I don't have anything on my record either. So any estimate on how much insurance would cost? I can add some extra info if you need it. Thanks.""

Does car insurance tranfer to your new car?
I just traded in my car for a new one. I only had the car for five months and I took out a six month insurance policy on it. Will the insurance that I had on my old car transfer to the new car or will I have to take out a whole new coverage and pay a whole new down payment for a new policy? How does this work. I read that car insurance is supposed to temporarily transfer to the new car. Does this apply to every company and if it does, does this temporary transfer happen automatically or should this be done through my insurance company before I go pick up my new car? Really dumb questions about car insurance?
This is my first time buying a car, and I have a question that may be kind of dumb. I live in Illinois, so it is illegal to drive a car that's uninsured. I don't have a car now, so I don't have a way of transferring insurance or whatever. - What do I do when I find a car and buy it and need to take it off the lot? I don't know what kind of car I'm getting, so I can't really get the insurance ahead of time. - If I did get pulled over for whatever reason, would the police be understanding if I just bought the car? - How quickly do insurance companies usually get you covered over the phone (particularly, Progressive)? - Do you have to pay a deposit? When? - When would my first actual payment be if I pay once every 6 months? I know these are dumb and basic, but please understand that I have never ever bought a car or gotten car insurance.""

Why is it mandatory to buy car insurance?
I understand if it's on a leased car but why on 100% paid off private cars? Mortgage companies make borrowers buy home insurance as a condition to get the Liam but once the mortgage is paid off you're free to not insure your property. Why is it legal for insurance companies to force all car owners to buy coverage? It's not constitutional no different than forcing them to buy health insurance.

Proof of insurance question?
The transmission went out of my car. A friend who does auto repair told me it would cost approx $1200 to fix. So I decided to scrap the car & get another. I cancelled insurance on old one & bought another 1 1/2 months later. The car was not driveable. Now I have to prove why I didn't have ins on the car and still had plates registered to it. I called & wrote a letter to the state and they said to send an estimate from an ASE cert. mechanic or tow bill or pictures. I don't have a tow bill. I didn't get out of the driveway. I don't need an ASE mechanic to tell me what is wrong w/the car and picutres of a transmission are stupid. I have received a written est from the guy and have statements from neighbors saying the car was not running. What more can I do?????? I don't want my license suspended.
