3NPS Phrygian Mode Patterns for Shredding
Hi everyone,
The next chart in the series of 3NPS for shredding is completed: the exotic Phrygian mode.
You know, we keep saying it's exotic, even though it's so widely used, that we can just stop saying that :P Just kidding. I guess it's just that we convey the emotion with this word, the mood, and not the fact that it's from faraway lands…

Play Faster With 3NPS Patterns for the Major Scale
Hi everyone! Are you striving to shred on guitar and embellish your solos with fast technical runs?
The system that excels at this specific task is called 3NPS which stands for "patterns with 3-notes-per-string". Now, don't get me wrong, that's not a magic pill that will solve all your problems, but it's a foundation that all your future practical work builds upon. This should not be discarded if your area interest is playing really fast. In fact, if you're not yet using it then that might be the sole reason which is holding your progress back.
Tumblr media
I've already released a lot of charts for 3NPS but, as I do with all of my work, I approach the subject from different perspectives. It's like with the Circle of Fifths, it's so much more than a wheel which tells you the number of accidentals in the Key. You just need to know what to look for in it. Likewise, the focus of my previous 3NPS charts was to show you how to learn scale patterns (and scales) more efficiently by not dismissing the things you already know but instead use that to learn new material and see how they are related.
With this series of 3NPS charts that I'm starting now you see them in context—stacked and aligned horizontally to provide a clear visualization of how they progress along the fretboard, how they relate to one another, where they line up, where adjacent patterns are, and just be focused on a single 3NPS pattern.
Since now your attention is not devoted to seeing the difference between the scales, but rather to the pattern itself, then your mental resources are now free for other things, such as building speed. If you follow the link, there I give more details about how 3NPS can help you with achieving that goal. Also, I bring up the subject of Economy Picking and how it can boost the speed even more.
The charts for the Major scale are already available in all 3 common variations that I usually produce: with beginner-friendly note names, as generic intervals and as blanks for those who like it clean!

Learn 3NPS Smarter: Hungarian Minor Vs Harmonic Minor
Hi all! Today we'll take a look at a cousin of Harmonic Minor: The Hungarian Minor scale! ;) The difference is 1 note but the fun part of this scale is 2 leaps of 2 half-steps! Harmonic Minor has 1 such leap. By contrast, Natural Minor scale and Melodic Minor scale has 0 such leaps, so it's quite a different sensation for your fretting hand :)
Its characteristic interval is #4 which is a tritone. This raised 4th results in 2 consecutive half-steps which introduces natural chromaticism. The takeaway here is that if you like the dark sounding Harmonic Minor then you will appreciate this one as well! ;)

Soon I'll publish a variation with beginner-friendly note names as well. Keep an eye on the website for updates! :)

3NPS Patterns Made Easy: Melodic Minor Vs Major Scale
Hi all! One more scale from the Melodic Minor modes is the Melodic Minor itself. It differs from the Major scale just by one note which is the Minor third interval from the root. Since both this interval and the Major scale are commonplace, it makes learning patterns of Melodic Minor a breeze! So let's compare them side-by-side!

As always, in the near future I will publish a variation with intervals for those interested in a more generalized approach. Keep checking the website! ;)

3NPS Patterns Made Easy: Mixolydian b6 Vs Mixolydian
Hey everyone! We're continuing comparing 3NPS patterns for Melodic Minor modes. This time it's the 5th mode Mixolydian b6 versus Mixolydian mode of the Major scale.
Again, there are multiple perspectives, one of them is to view Mixolydian b6 as Aeolian #3, in which case we'd be comparing it with regular Minor scale. I went with Mixolydian b6. Let me know if you're interested in other comparisons as well…

3NPS Patterns Made Easy: Lydian Dominant Vs Lydian
Hi all! Let us switch to the modes of Melodic Minor. This time we'll compare the Lydian Dominant (the 4th mode of Melodic Minor) with regular Lydian mode (also 4th) of the Major scale. We could also view it as a "Mixolydian #4" and compare it with regular Mixolydian, both are valid choices for comparison, but I decided to go with the Lydian one. I can do the Mixolydian #4 if there is going to be any interest.

3NPS Made Easy: Phrygian Dominant Vs Phrygian
Hi all!
Today we're comparing the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor: Phrygian Dominant which is loved so much by Yngwie Malmsteen! By now you should be able to see the "pattern" that everything builds gradually, especially if you compare things side-by-side! E.g. from Minor to Phrygian is 1 note change, and from Phrygian to Phrygian Dominant is also 1 note change.

3NPS Made Easy: Harmonic Minor vs Natural Minor
Hi all!
I'm starting 3NPS by comparison for a different scale family - the Harmonic Minor!
Not only it's a different family of scales, but we also have a cross-family comparison, i.e. in this chart we'll look at differences between "Harmonic Minor" (the 1st mode in its own family) and the Natural Minor scale (a.k.a. Aeolian, the 6th mode of the Major scale), and you'll see that, as before, it's still just 1 change that you need to make to the guitar pattern to get the even more eastern-sounding Harmonic Minor ;)
