they'd had to forgo their uniforms for the sake of avoiding detection for just a little longer, tetcho plucks at the hem of the jacket jono had thrown him in their rush to get away and deeper into the city - deeper into the civilian population that the government wouldn't dare put at risk for the sake of two stray dogs. vision fixed firmly on the corridor just ahead of his partner, tetcho feels the walls closing in around them, the lack of a sabre at his hip and familiar weight of a cloak against his back sending his mind spinning in a way he doesn't know how to counter.

the news broke earlier for them. maybe it was something to do with jono overhearing tense conversations? or maybe it was pure luck. either way, tetcho follows his partner further into the heart of the building that houses the armed detective agency - blood rushing in his ears as his own conflict pitches up the closer they get. he should be handing himself in - he should be following orders like a soldier should. only, tetcho isn't doing any of those things. the hound doesn't know what, exactly, they're doing here. won't they just be hunted down?

but, jono's words, hushed and desperate, hang in the front of tetcho's mind - even now. "you gave them everything and they give you nothing. tetcho, you don't have to listen."

"...what happens if they turn us away, jono?" it's a simple question, one that comes as his partner stops before the door behind which their only hope for a way out of this mess operates. tetcho falls into place just behind jono, standing at his shoulder and watching the back of his partner's head. "we hunted them. will they even consider helping us?" // @moonhund & @nonhumen are we ready for the worst-case-scenario, kids?

i don’t use icons anymore but i have a lot left over that never got deleted. so, here’s some favorites from muses i no longer write on tumblr for various reasons and why i don’t write them anymore; 

momochi ako --- too niche. nobody wrote with her really, which is a shame because she was pretty fun.

akutagawa ryuunosuke --- far too scary by far. i kind of miss him, though, and i considered bringing him back. in fact, his icons are in a special folder called “muses in limbo”, in which literally **only** his icons are stored.

ayatsuji yukito --- i’m not sure why he’s not here tbh. i really like him.

kumo baren --- too niche. did you know there are like 13 fics total tagged for the manga he and ako are from?

nikolai gogol --- i feel like his energy is a little too intense for the way i intend to run my blog, but then again i also have characters like graham.

abe no hirari --- too niche + bad associations. i don’t particularly enjoy the canon ship for him because my former writing partner with it made like botan and ghosted me, so i don’t want people asking me to write it.

ladd russo --- rated r for intense violence. like gogol, i felt like he didn’t suit the energy i wanted on my blog, but then again i actually kept claire.

edgar allan poe --- honestly i just fell out of the vibe.

edogawa ranpo --- i actually really liked writing ranpo, but i had good friends whose portrayals i prioritized and as a result nobody actually wrote with mine that much. i don’t mind it; since i tend to pick up a lot of muses i have a natural tendency to give priority to the people with more energy to focus on one specific muse.

roland fortis --- his fandom is super toxic. plus, bad associations, kind of?

ronny schiatto --- i didn’t think putting the all-powerful homunculus on my blog was conducive to interactions in which i did not have to godmod. claire is bad enough and i don’t need the only character in baccano! who could potentially land a legitimate hit on him as well.

shirogane kei --- actually my favorite on this list, but i can choose to either sell him or sell my baccano! muses really hard for interactions. because baccano! has more unique features and log horizon is an isekai with a couple standout problematic elements, it was easier to sell baccano! and remove shiroe entirely so he wouldn’t collect dust.

suehiro tetcho --- intensely bad associations, but i’ve considered bringing him back out of spite a few times. my past writing partner basically disowned me when i stopped wanting to write him as much when i got more into the witcher, and i think for my own health and the thought that i am a good person, i need to wait until adding him back doesn’t feel like a “fuck you” to that person.

(comfort) : one muse has been having nightmares and unable to sleep, so asks the other to cuddle with them to help them drift off

the iv site in his arm still hasn't healed. they said it was something to do with the cocktail of chemicals and drugs they were feeding through it - said that he should expect it to leave a scar when it eventually closes up and to keep it covered while it heals. tetcho can feel it itch beneath the dressings. it festers, feeling like it might slough off of his body if he moves too much or takes the dressings off. the other wounds they left him with are all but gone - only bruising around his wrists and throat remain visible enough that the hound catches sight of them in his reflection every now and then. the iv site, though? his arm feels weak, feels slow and heavy and tetcho can't ignore it like he thought he'd be able to when the doctors gave him the all clear to return to desk duty...

not that they'd have been able to stop him once his strength mostly returned.

it's late at night when tetcho finds himself stood at his partner's door, grip on his own bandaged arm trembling as he fights with himself. he shouldn't wake jono. not at this hour... not when the other hound has work of his own to be worrying about. a bad dream doesn't need prioritising over their very real and impactful jobs... tetcho knows that. and yet, he cannot bring himself to leave. he cannot bring himself to face the empty darkness of his own quarters again. not when he can still feel phantom cuffs against his wrist. not when the echo of jono's voice - as ragged and desperate as it was that day - still rings in his ears.

he doesn't want to wake jono. but tetcho can think of nothing else but the idea of listening to his partner's heartbeat in the comfort of his arms. he can think of nothing else but the gentle scolding he's sure he'll be subject to if jono finds out how long tetcho hesitated at his door... or if jono sees him itching at the still open wound on his arm.

tetcho's voice is quiet as he leans his forehead against the door and all but mumbles against the barrier. "...jouno-san?"

tetcho suehiro has been a hunting dog for as long as he can remember. he hasn't felt this raw and exposed, this weak and vulnerable since he was a child staring down at his parents dead on the kitchen floor. that self assured confidence that came with his given strength and earnt swordsmanship is nothing but a faint itch in the back of his skull as the hound tightens the grip against his own arm further, willing the itch to fade. he feels small, stood in tracksuit bottoms and the only casual t-shirt he owns... feels isolated where he stands in the hall way willing himself to act for once in his life. the decisiveness he's always been so praised for has left him here, reaching out for the only other form of safety tetcho has known in his life.

he takes a breath. "i... i cannot sleep... again."

thank u for my life anon :’) this is going to go under a cut because oh boy its big. content warning for descriptions and drawn depictions of gore/violence and mentions of torture.

MARK TWAIN: he really is a dangerous person, despite the way he acts. he had no qualms about killing atsushi.

SUEHIRO TETCHO: he is also a very dangerous person. although he is just and fair and will not kill if necessary, he would be very terrifying to fight against.

MARGARET MITCHELL: she did everything she could to support her family.

NIKOLAI GOGOL: the four extremely gruesome murders he committed to get the attention of the ADA. shown below.

NATSUME SOUSEKI: he has connections to almost everyone in yokohama and is called one of the most powerful ability users.

EDOGAWA RANPO: oh boy. i get REALLY annoyed when people forget that ranpo is smarter than dazai at figuring things out–even though dazai beats him in terms of manipulation.

MUSHITARO OGURI: that he was the reason fyodor was able to trick ranpo

AYATSUJI YUKITO: he’s the most dangerous ability user according to the japanese government, and his ability is stated to even work on gods.

KAJII MOTOJIRO: he’s incredibly smart

H. P. LOVECRAFT: he likes chocolate and ice cream, and is stated to like tribute

TAYAMA KATAI: he is willing to face his fears for the sake of others

SHIBUSAWA TATSUHIKO: he literally tortured a young atsushi for his ability and then went on to try and collect every ability for himself in search of the ultimate ability

TOPAZ/KARMA: he wanted to be the boss of the port mafia

AGATHA CHRISTIE: she straight up really did try to obliterate yokohama to prevent the fog from spreading elsewhere

ANDRE GIDE: he blew up a van full of children

LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY: her unwillingness to get close to people which i usually poke fun at by calling her tsundere stems from a probable fear of being abandoned and/or rejected again

FUKUCHI OCHI: he’s the commander of the hunting dogs and presumably a very capable fighter–and his energetic personality isn’t all there is to him

DOGRA MAGRA: she’s an oc so i don’t know if this counts but probably that she encourages q to curse people as a misguided attempt to help

AKUTAGAWA RYUNOSUKE: he’s an abuse victim

YUZU: her and the rest of the sheep wanting to keep chuuya on their side wasn’t them being greedy because the sheep needed chuuya to stay as a formidable force

GENJI: he straight up hated himself for a good while there

TRACER: she shows a genuine interest in mondatta’s teaching

he's trapped. trapped in the same cycle he's been in for hours now. the voices around him fall away to nothing, buried beneath the toxic combination of fear and rage that runs rampant through the hound's skull and threatens to make his knees buckle beneath him. he's exhausted, blood clings to his skin and clothes alike and the blade gripped in his hand twitches, coiling beneath his ability and straightening again with every heaving step that carries him forward.

tetcho can't stop. he can't - won't - stop looking for jono. the desperation of needing to hear his partner's voice again lodges itself deep in the soldier's chest, weighs him down and makes him clumsy. the bell clutched in tetcho's free hand is slick with blood slowly drying against his skin - a stark reminder of why he's all but wandering aimlessly in search of jono. the sound of his own boots on concrete falling on deaf ears - drowned out by the pounding of his heart in his throat and the phantom sounds of jono in pain, jono dying alone, jono-- no. no. he has to be okay. he has to be. nothing else would make sense - tetcho can't think about the worst case scenario here. he... he just can't.

tetcho suehiro is a man of his word. he said he would find jono. he said he would put jono above justice for five minutes. but... isn't that a lie, then? he has no intention of stopping now - no intention of ending up empty handed by the time he's done. tetcho doesn't care if he's worn through the soles of his boots or if he's driven himself past even a hunting dog's limits. he doesn't care. not when jono is in danger. not when jono could be...

no. concentrate.

he might not have his partner's keen senses, but what he lacks in that department, tetcho makes up for with the steadfast nature of his commitments. he will not stop. not until he's saved his partner. not until he has to listen to empty threats and sharp insults over and over again. not until jono's hand is in his again. it's then that the sound of footsteps meets tetcho as he crosses the threshold into a wider, more open room. amber gaze lifts, desperation filling his expression as his fist tightens around his partner's bell until the metal threatens to bite into his skin. this was never something that the hound thought of much. not before he and jono began to grow closer than just partners. tetcho had never overly understood the appeal of many types of relationships - least of all those he saw being referred to as romantic. the strict, rule abiding side of him disliked the vulnerability it opened up. he disliked the idea of allowing someone in close enough that they might twist the meaning behind the hunting dog's understanding of the world around him.

and yet... his hold on jono when they lay together like this is something he never has to think about. it's something that comes naturally. it feels as easy as breathing and - for once - tetcho doesn't find himself questioning it. he doesn't find himself feeling lost in a sea of confusion or disinterest. no. jono leans into this contact and tetcho knows he's never felt whole like this before now. he's never known what it feels like to be safe like this before - to be the reason someone feels safe like this.

still, tetcho's asking a question he knows could shatter their peace if jono wished it to. he lays there and asks a question he knows could hold a lit match to the fuse jono holds in both hands like a lifeline. he doesn't know why he asks... no... no that's a lie. he knows why he asks. tetcho knows why it's something that's been on his mind. he knows it's because jono still feels... distant, in some respects. he knows it's because he feels a distance between them sometimes - when he watches his partner's expression shift or his lips thin at the mention of certain names or places. it's a curiosity tetcho has held since they were first assigned as partners - since he was told to kill the fox if there was even a hint of betrayal in jono's actions.

he watches his partner shift, allows him to move as he wishes as tetcho rolls a little more onto his back in order to still watch jono's features in the half light made fuzzy by the sheets and warmth surrounding the both of them. again, he's speaking without thinking - reaching out a hand to graze fingertips 'gainst sharp jawline. "if you want to tell me... i want to know." usually blunt tones are soft, gentle as he holds that escape route between them - willing jono to understand he's not trapped here. "whatever it was. it is in the past - no? you are... how do you say it? you are a different person now. much like i am, no?"

"i do not think that you needed to be so rough with him, jono-san." the dragon's words are blunt, his amber gaze fixed on his companion keeping pace next to him as the two of them make their way back towards their temporary lodgings whilst on the luofu. tetcho's head swims as his own clearly defined rules begin to blur through jono's words and actions through their last interrogation... well, their last victim - if jono had anything to say about it.

"it is not fair of you to treat people like that. i have said it before - we are here to gather information, not to terrorise the population of the luofu." despite himself, there's an air of caution in tetcho's voice and expression. who is he to lecture jono on how to do their jobs? isn't it tetcho's fault that they're even here in the first place? still, the memory of that poor merchant's expression lodges itself in his throat like a bone and the dragon finds he can't just stand idly by and allow the foxian to do exactly what he wants. "why can you not just ask the questions without threatening innocent people?"

if the hunting dog notices the dip in the temperature around them, he doesn't make it known as the pair of them turn another corner and their familiar path home is tuned out in order for tetcho to stop in his tracks and turn to face jono fully. the plea in his voice is pitched up a few degrees as draconic tail swishes behind him in a distressed movement.
