After the War: He attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and joined the LA Police Department in 1946 becoming a detective in the Central Burglary Division. He left the LAPD for the District Attorney's office in 1951 as a deputy district attorney. He was promoted in 1964 to chief deputy district attorney. In 1970, Governor Ronald Reagan appointed him an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal. He retired in 1990.
• (Fun Fact/Before the War) Buck played as the catcher on his college baseball team his junior year. One of his teammates was Jackie Robinson. Also, Bucks mother worked on movies and Buck was present on set with his mother and met actor Charlie Chaplin. Buck, being a child at the time, was so rowdy and disruptive that Charlie Chaplin kicked him off set.

Roy/Jaime: Jaime has to fly out somewhere or go up to Manchester and shares tender goodbye with Roy. When he's scheduled to come back, a terrible disaster happens like the plane he's supposed to be on or the train he's meant to take crashes with multiple fatalities. Roy is beside himself thinking Jaime's dead. In reality Jaime is safe and sound on another flight or a different train with his phone switched off. Roy is grief-stricken and has to be medicated and put to bed. Jaime comes home late at night, completely oblivious. He climbs into bed with Roy who is completely unconscious with plans to wake up first and make his man his favorite breakfast. I expect Roy to full on faint when he comes downstairs the next morning, still thinking his Tartt is toast, only to find said Tartt toiling away in the kitchen making him fucking crepes. Cue the chaos, especially when Jaime learns of what went down and everyone thinking he was fucking dead! This can be Roy/Jaime/Keeley too if you like!
This is heartbreaking and I love it
Jamie getting invited to do a little travel documentary type thing for a charity he's involved in regarding suports in underfunded areas across the world during the off season. He's sad to miss training but it's only for two weeks and he's excited to do this. Him and Roy have been together long enough that they're serious. Roy has even cleared space in his closet for Jamie's clothes. Their goodbye involves a lot of kisses, some inappropirate groping (Roy will miss Jamie's ass, Jamie will miss Roy's....) but Roy drops him at the airport and waits until Jamie disappears through security before he leaves and goes home but it doesn't feel like home without Jamie and he already wants him home.
Jamie is due to fly in during the evening about two weeks later, and Roy is in a good mood which the team is delighted about. They were worried he'd try the strings on dicks again with the mood he's been in. They're all in the conference room, watching a match to analyse the plays when Rebecca rushes in and grabs Ted. Everyone is confused, and then their phones start pinging and one of them rushes to switch the laptop to the news and suddenly they're all staring at the BBC coverage of a plan crash that currently has no survivors.....and it was flying from where Jamie was last filming to London.
Roy instantly goes into denial, and when Rebecca renters the room with Ted, he just goes "No, it's not his plane", depite the flight number matching with the screenshot Jamie had sent Roy of the flight details along with a text saying "So you don't strand me at the airport grandad". He refuses to believe it, and they all sit there in disbelief watching, waiting hoping until Keeley is there.
"Roy....we have to....we have to give a statement. People have gotten word of him...that he was....that Jamie was on the plane"
"No. It's not him"
"Roy, there's no survivors"
"No, fuck you, fuck you for thinking it. Jamie isn't....He's not..."
"Roy...."
"He's not Keeley, he's not...he can't be...he's not gone"
When the news reports that Jamie Tartt is among those that were on the plane along with some of the crew of the documentary....Roy finally snaps. He just goes catatonic, stops responding. He's panicking, and thats when his sister arrives and when she hugs him, he breaks. She's the one that gets him home the team, even in their grief, distrat the media that has gathered despite Rebecca theatening to sue them all, and she gives him something to help sleep before she hasto go collect Phoebe, but she plans to come back in the morning.
Jamie, on the other hand, had actually finished filming early and decided to go straigh to the airport to get an earlier flight. He didn't charge his phone, so it dies while roy kent
he's waiting in the lounge and playing games to distract himself. When the news hits, he's on the plane, and people had seen him boarding so in the chaos, no one actually checks the logs until after 24hours and by that time, Jamie had made it home.
Its about 3am when he does. The driver of his transport that was order hours before his phone died barely paid attention to him, so no one actually realises Jamie Tartt isnt dead and he hadn't had to go through passport control. So when he slips into bed with Roy, he has no idea about any of it.....until he's cooking breakfast and turns around to find Roy, pale and wide eyed staring at him and just whispering, "Did I....Did I die too?"

On Apr. 13, 1967, my father, Richard ‘Butch’ Sheffield became the first Air Force officer to eject from an SR-71 Blackbird Mach 3+ spy plane.
The SR-71 Blackbird ejection seat was the SR-1, a Lockheed Design that was not much different from the Stanley designed Lockheed C-2 (later modified into the S/R-2) seat which preceded it in other aircraft (the C-2 seatwas used in the very early A-12s and SR-71 Blackbirds). According to The Ejection Site, some of the differences between the C-2 and the SR-1 seat included the omission of the leg guards and arm restraint nets which were used on the C-2.
Due to a fatality that occurred early in the SR-71 program where a crewman was killed when his helmet impacted the headrest of the seat during a structural breakup, some of the C-2 seats were equipped with a headrest extender to more closely fit the seat to the crewman.

On Apr. 13, 1967, my father, Reconnaissance Systems Officer (RSO) Richard ‘Butch’ Sheffield became the first US Air Force (USAF) officer to eject from an SR-71 Blackbird Mach 3+ spy plane.
Earl Boone was the second.
It was a night training mission. Takeoff was at 7:30 PM, the SR-71 #966 had less than 50 hours on her, the total flight time from takeoff till impact was one hour and 23 minutes.
SR-71 RSO tells the story of when he and his pilot were able to land their crippled Blackbird after it experienced a catastrophic engine failure while flying at Mach 2.88 at 68,000 feet

Shortly after refueling, the SR pitched up and then down and did two cartwheels. It was at this time that Earl Boone ordered my father to get out! Captain Sheffield was found by a helicopter. He told me that the helicopter almost landed directly on him. He grabbed his radio and yelled “don’t land on me” . He was unable to move; his pressure suit was so full of gravel from being a drug by the parachute after he hit the ground. Maj. Earl Boone walked back to the crash site 9 to15 hours after the accident. He told my mother that he walked all night because he just couldn’t face her. He thought my father had died.

The next night I watched the national news and heard Walter Cronkite saying that my Dad had been found alive in New Mexico after his spy plane had crashed then showed a picture of him. It dawned on me that maybe, my family wasn’t living a normal life. This was a terrifying incident for my entire family. And for the Boone family too.
Earle Boone was an excellent pilot and did not cause the accident, he did choose to leave the Air Force.
My Dad, Richard ‘Butch’ Sheffield took six weeks off to recover and then resumed his job. He hated being grounded and couldn’t wait to fly again.

Three civilians were killed on Monday when a MIG-21 military aircraft crashed into a house in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.
The Indian Air Force said in a statement that the plane had taken off for a a "routine operational training sortie" from a nearby base. 
"Soon thereafter, the pilot experienced an onboard emergency, following which he attempted to recover the aircraft as per existing procedures. Having failed to do so, he initiated an ejection, sustaining minor injuries in the process," the Air Force said. 
"The aircraft wreckage fell on a house in Bahlol Nagar in Hanumangarh District, unfortunately leading to the loss of three lives." 
The Air Force said an inquiry had been set up to ascertain the cause of the crash. 
Patchy safety record, India modernizing arsenal
MIG-21s have had a shaky history in India, although for decades they were the backbone of the country's Air Force. First acquired from the Soviet Union in 1963, several later variants were added to the fleet over the years.
However, India's continued reliance on the outdated technology is a point of contention for its aviators, with the model among the handful of planes downy the years that some dissatisfied crews have taken to nickname a "flying coffin" after multiple fatal crashes. 
Last July, two pilots were killed when their twin-seater MIG-21 trainer aircraft crashed near Barmer, also in Rajasthan. That was the sixth MiG-21 crash since Janauar 2021, with five pilots killed in all. 
India's military has also suffered several other recent fatal air accidents. 
Last week, an Indian-made army helicopter with three people on board crashed in the Jammu and Kashmir region.  
And two Indian fighter jets collided mid-air during routine exercises in January 2023, south of the Indian capital of New Delhi. One of the pilots died in the collision. That incident involved two far more modern planes, a Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 and French-made Mirage 2000.
In January 2020, India's most senior military officer, then-Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat, was one of 13 people killed when a Russian-made military transport helicopter crashed en route to an air base.
India is trying to modernize its air force with a mixture of acquisitions from Russia and France, and also by trying to develop a domestic aviation industry of its own.

Future of vintage Ju-52 aircraft remains up in the air
Following the fatal crash of a Junkers Ju-52 plane in the Swiss Alps in 2018, the Ju-Air plane company had dreamed of bringing back the vintage aircraft. But hopes of a revival are fading. For decades, vintage Junkers Ju-52 aircraft (affectionately known as ‘Tante Ju’ or ‘Auntie Ju’ in German) captured the hearts of people taking sightseeing flights in Switzerland. On August 5, 2018, however, a Ju-52 crashed at altitude near Flims in canton Graubünden. All twenty passengers lost their lives in the crash. Since then, the planes have been grounded. Ju-Air, based in Dübendorf, was planning a revival. One of three original planes, the “HB-HOS”, was supposed to take to the skies again. The vintage aircraft had been transferred to the company Junkers-Flugzeugwerke AG, based in canton St Gallen, to make it airworthy again. But nothing came of it, as announced last year. Enhanced Black Box for Safer Flying by Armando Poeta
Flying has become safer over the years, with the number of accidents and fatalities reducing progressively. Statistics show a variety of reasons for aviation accidents with human errors coming top of the list.  The actual causes for the accidents are generally multiple and can only be precisely understood once the parts of the aircraft, especially the black boxes are collected. With his years of experience in the industry, Armando Poeta believes that there is a  need for advanced technology to prevent or reduce aircraft accidents, and investigate them when they do occur.
Current Technologies 
Currently, modern aircrafts use a device to investigate crash accidents, which is made of two components: the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) generally known as a black box.

In order to provide data for a crash investigation, the black box must be recovered from the aircraft and analyzed. However, recent accidents have proven the limits of this technology. 
Armando Poeta recounts the example of the Malaysia Flight MH 370 involving a Boeing 777 that crashed into the ocean. Despite weeks of search, neither the flight nor the black box was ever recovered—leaving us with no information regarding the cause. Similarly, the more recent China Eastern 737 crash would have benefited from a new technology that can be easily implemented.
Improving for the Future
Armando Poeta believes that the current black box can be upgraded using some current technologies. An enhanced black box that can overcome these limitations should have the following features:
Real-time data transmission 
Detachable and floating qualities.
Firstly, the plane would simply transmit data via satellite to a dedicated ground station, regarding basic information such as position, altitude, speed, and rate of climb and descent. Armando Poeta thinks that the black box can further be programmed to release more information, such as the last 30 seconds of the cockpit voice recorder, engine data, throttle setting, flight controls position, aircraft configuration, etc., in a situation of possible threat (for example in the case of a plane exceeding a certain number of Gs or rate of descent).

With that information, investigators will have better tools to identify the possibility of a crash and the location of the plane for either search and rescue or recovery operations. This possibility of transmitting data to a ground station is already available today but is an option that a customer may need to buy. Instead, offering this feature to a dedicated team may help monitor the path of every plane and identify problems as soon as they occur, according to Armando Poeta. It can help the crew deal with an unusual situation before it becomes a major problem.
This feature would have been valuable to get better information sooner in the two crashes mentioned by Armando Poeta above. In the case of MH 370 in particular, the plane might have been located and intercepted after going off route for a long time before it lost contact.
The second feature to enhance a black box according to Armando Poeta would involve ejecting the black box in case of a water crash. In such an event, the black box is usually either lost forever, or may be unusable, like in the event of the Chinese crash. But Armando Poeta believes the black box can be ejected and put on a floating device with an antenna that transmits a signal to a dedicated station. This would help identify the location of the black box and the wreckage of the plane nearby.
Armando Poeta says that implementing these two features together or individually can give airlines company a better tool to analyze the root cause of an accident to avoid it in the future. Companies like Airbus have been working on similar technologies which will be essential in forming the future of safe aviation.
