DAY 5387
Jalsa, Mumbai                Nov 12,  2022                 Sat 11:59 PM
Uffff .. made it in time for the day of the 12th without the slash of the 13th .. though it was pretty close .. just a minute away and the DAY would have been morose ..
But morose is the day .. for another colleague has left us and me in particular ..
Rakesh Sharma , first AD to Prakash Mehra on ‘ZANJEER’ .. then independent director for other PM ( prakash mehra, as we often joked with him, as the PM of the country ) films .. and singularly - Hera Pheri, Khoon Pasina, Mr Natwarlal, Yaarana , et al .. and such great camaraderie on sets and else where, socially, during events and Holi ..
One by one they all leave ..
But some like Rakesh leave an imprint that is hard to remove or forget .. his sense of screen play and direction, writing and execution on the spur of the moment and the fun times on location during Nattu and Yaarana .. his complete faith in his worth .. and the ease with which he would grant us the liberty of skipping shootings on the odd day, just to be able to spend time relaxing fooling around and being in the company of uncontrollable laughter and gaiety ..
A most affable and kind hearted human , ready to step up to any kind of inconvenience that artists that worked with him, faced .. !
No I shall hesitate to go to his funeral .. for I shall not be able to bear the sight of an inert Rakesh  !
You made many of us prominent with your innovative ideas for story and film, Rakesh, and you shall ever be remembered .. ! 🙏🙏🙏
Sad news percolates on some other near and dear too .. but life challenges each hour and you get up bruised and damaged to brush off the injuries and walk .. then canter .. and finally run .. !!
I have no heart to design any other with pictures, so shall leave that for another day ..
Love

💛🪔 .. November 13 .. birthday of Ef Dr. Chitra Prasad from Canada 🇨🇦 .. Ef since the days of BigAdda .. and an admirer of Babuji .. she has written a book titled “Poetry and Emotions on Celluloid: Role of Hindi Film Lyricists” .. which is somehow related to my work of reserving the heritage of Indian Cinema .. or so I was told .. and one shall thank her for this with admiration and all good wishes .. .. and it is happy birthday to Ef Saru Rairikar from Satara for the 13th as well .. ❤️❤️❤️ November 13 is also "World Kindness Day" .. and in quoting from the words of the Ef .. one must say that it's indeed wonderful that your birthdays have such a special meaning .. the 13th has always been associated with being unlucky .. which is untrue .. but now you can tell everyone that your birthdays are a reminder for people to be kind !! .. in a world where we can choose to be anything , choose to be kind .. !! .. and .. yes .. be kind to yourself .. that's important too .. ❤️❤️❤️
Love .. and the kindness of 🤗 to all the Ef .. ✨

Dil ki haalat ko koi kya jaane

Chanka mainu
Chiktara chiktara

Aese chup hain
Saiyan ja re ja
Ranjish hi sahi
Surmayi shaam
Wadiyan wadiyan

Amitabh Bachchan's Early Movies as a Young Actor
Tumblr media
The name that resonates with the core of Indian cinema - Amitabh Bachchan. Long before he was the 'Shehanshah' or the 'Angry Young Man' of Bollywood, this remarkable actor was a bright-eyed beginner navigating his path through the turbulent tides of Indian cinema. This blog post will take a stroll down memory lane, exploring Amitabh Bachchan's early cinematic journey and his evolution as a young actor.
The Introductory Act
Amitabh Bachchan first stepped into the limelight with the film 'Saat Hindustani' in 1969. Although the movie did not fare exceptionally well at the box office, Bachchan's performance was noted. This film not only served as his debut but also laid the groundwork for him to step into more challenging roles with ease.
A String of Early Roles
His initial journey was marked by a string of roles in movies like 'Anand' (1971), 'Reshma Aur Shera' (1971), and 'Parwana' (1971). These films allowed Bachchan to showcase his talent as a young actor on the rise.
In the much-acclaimed film 'Anand', Amitabh Bachchan shared the screen with Rajesh Khanna. Despite being a supporting role, Bachchan managed to make an impression with his performance as the stoic Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee, showcasing his flair for subtle, intense performances.
The Breakthrough: Power-packed Performances
The year 1973 marked a significant turn in Amitabh's career, starting with 'Zanjeer', where he stepped out of supporting roles and took centre stage. The audience got their first glimpse of the 'Angry Young Man', and Amitabh Bachchan became a household name. His intense performance set a new tone for the Hindi film hero, breaking away from the romantic hero mould prevalent during that time.
This era of Bachchan’s career was marked with a slew of unforgettable performances in movies such as 'Deewar' (1975) and 'Sholay' (1975). These two films are considered classics of Indian cinema and are indicative of Bachchan's growing prowess and popularity. His exemplary performances as Vijay Verma in 'Deewar' and as Jai in 'Sholay' are still considered iconic.
Rising to Stardom: The Resilient Journey
Despite experiencing struggles early in his career, Bachchan’s determination did not wane. Even as a young actor, his dedication was evident in every role he undertook. His constant desire for innovation and self-improvement led him to be flexible in his roles, further expanding his acting repertoire.
Films like 'Kabhie Kabhie' (1976) and 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar' (1978) epitomized this aspect. Whether he was enacting the role of a passionate poet in 'Kabhie Kabhie' or playing a heartbroken orphan in 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', Bachchan exuded an earthy appeal that was swiftly resonating with the masses, making him one of the most sought-after actors of his time.
Beyond the 'Angry Young Man'
While his 'Angry Young Man' persona was greatly loved by audiences, Bachchan did not allow himself to be typecast. He showcased his versatility by taking up divergent roles. For instance, his unforgettable performances in 'Don' (1978) and 'Mr. Natwarlal' (1979) clearly depicted his comfort with both dramatic roles and light-hearted, charming characters.
In essence, Amitabh Bachchan's compelling work as a young actor brought a fresh and enduring angle to the Indian cinema industry. His early works stand testament to a star who was ahead of his time and made a mark with the sheer power of his talent. Even today, the charisma and magnetism of young Amitabh Bachchan live on, etched forever in the annals of Indian cinema.

He goes by the infamous moniker Mr. Natwarlal born Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava. You won't forget him after reading about him, the man dubbed "the Conman of India" . Roots and Beginnings: The Early Years of Mr.Natwarlal Natwarlal, an Indian conman most known for his high-profile crimes and jail breaks, was born Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava and lived from 1912 to 25 July 2009. He is accused of selling the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the Indian Parliament House numerous times. In the village of Bangra in the Bihar Siwan district, Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava, who would later become Natwarlal, was born. He was the elder brother of two to a Station master. He was able to take 1,000 rupees out of his neighbor's account before he noticed after realizing how simple it would be to fake his signature when Natwarlal's neighbor sent him to deposit his bank drafts, which is how he first learned to forge. Natwarlal fled to Calcutta and registered as a student for a bachelor's in commerce while working as a part-time stock dealer. He made an unsuccessful attempt to start a fabric business as well. Natwarlal's father was a station master, so he was knowledgeable about India's railway freight industry. He also gained awareness of banking regulations thanks to his bachelor of business degree and his time spent working as a stock broker. He was able to pull off the scams because to his proficiency in falsifying paperwork and signatures. The Making of a Legend: Tracing the Career Journey of Mr.Natwarlal Natwarlal briefly adjusted his strategy after being apprehended for the first time in 1937 for stealing nine tonnes of iron. Police reported that he would frequently visit prostitutes, offer them poisoned alcohol, steal their jewelry and cash, and then flee. Natwarlal quickly decided that this strategy was too risky, so he returned to con artists. Natwarlal is accused of defrauding thousands of rupees from hundreds of shop owners, jewelers, bankers, and foreigners while disguising himself with more than fifty identities. He frequently employed innovative techniques to defraud people, as in the 1950s when he defrauded the Punjab National Bank of 6.5 lakh rupees through a scheme involving train freight and bags of rice. He was extremely skilled at imitating the signatures of well-known people. He is alleged to have stolen substantial quantities of money from a number of industrialists, including the Tatas, the Birlas, and Dhirubhai Ambani. According to a story, Natwarlal included the members of parliament in the "sale" of the Parliament House to a foreign buyer. According to legend, Natwarlal was something of a Robin Hood in his home hamlet of Bangra. According to legend, he donated his earnings to the less fortunate. He became well-known thanks to stories of his heists, which tended to be non-violent and only targeted the rich and powerful. Whenever Natwartal visited Siwan town, a local claimed that he attracted sizable crowds. According to one story, Natwarlal once traveled to Bangra to use his loot to organize a huge feast for the entire community. He provided each poor villager with 100 rupees during the feast . Natwarlal received significant punishments for many of his high-profile crimes, and the length of his prison term grew with time. Natwarlal was charged with 14 counts of forgery in Bihar alone and received a 113-year prison term. It is estimated that he only served 20 years in prison during his lifetime as a result of his numerous escape attempts. Natwarlal was detained nine or ten times, but he managed to escape most of the time. His escapes were frequently exceedingly crafty. For instance, Natwarlal fled the Kanpur jail in 1957 by dressing in a smuggled police uniform, paying off the guards in his cell with a bag full of cash, and then leaving the building while guards saluted him. Newspapers were indeed in the suitcase. At the age of 84, Natwarlal was last detained in 1996.
He was transported by police from the Kanpur jail to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for treatment, but he managed to escape again despite his advanced age and use of a wheelchair. He was last seen by authorities on June 24, 1996, at the New Delhi railway station, and he was never seen again. Natwarlal's brother later asserted that he was cremated in Ranchi in 1996, the year he last eluded capture. This makes it difficult to determine his exact date of passing. Natwarlal's attorney asked for the dismissal of more than 100 charges against him in 2009, stating that Natwarlal passed away on July 25, 2009. He was married twice. He left one daughter behind. In Indian history, Natwarlal is regarded as the greatest con artist. In India, con artists who pull off extremely cunning scams are frequently referred to as Natwarlal, and many Indian con artists claim that his career served as an inspiration. His activities have been compared to those of Victor Lustig and Frank Abagnale. The residents of Bangra are proud that he was born and raised there. At the location of Natwarlal's former home, the community intended to erect a statue of him in 2011. [1]

It's crazy to think about how Emraan Hashmi's career has gone from 'serial kisser' (Murder, Zeher, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Aashiq Banaya Apne, Aksar) to spanning a career that includes not just 'serial kisser,' but also: 'one who always dies' (*spoiler warning*: Murder, Chocolate*, Kalyug, Aksar, Gangster, Awarapan, Jannat, Jannat 2, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Chehre); large cast star (Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Mumbai Saga, Baadshaho, Shanghai; The Dirty Picture); and even occasionally solid single-lead movies (Why Cheat India; Ungli; Raja Natwarlal; Mr. X). That's not to say all the movies were amazing or anything, but he's become pretty dependable as an actor (and while the song quality hasn't lived up to the success of his first couple of movies - which was going to be hard to do, living up to this appearance of Himesh as a singer, and then even getting Atif Aslam involved there for a bit - Zeher, especially; Kalyug, too - it is still pretty good overall). In fact, in this aside about songs in his movies, while you can't go wrong with Aashiq Banaya Apne and Aksar, as full soundtracks, I also love Tum Mile and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, and essentially every movie has one to two absolutely solid songs.
At the same time, it really sucks to see Akshay Kumar struggling through a string of flops right now, because - well, this is nothing like his string of bad movies in 1994 (11 movies released in total - though Mohra and Main Khiladi Tu Anari were actually good, and Suhaag was entertaining) or 1997 (7 movies in total) or that weird span he had of really bad 'comedies' that people inexplicably loved (Garam Masala, Deewane Huye Paagal, Phir Hera Pheri, Heyy Babyy, Khatta Meetha, Action Replayy, Tees Maar Khan, Thank You - though I will admit to, on multiple rewatches, having developed a soft spot for the absolute spoofiness of Tees Maar Khan). That's not to say his movies this past year were all excellent (looking at you, Raksha Bandhan, which was one of the worst movies I've ever seen), but this string seems to be more because people are stupid (they are) than a bad choice in movies. Sure, Ram Setu left something to be desired and Cuttputlli suffered from one too many idiot characters, but Akshay's been solid throughout. This isn't a rehash of the early 90s, that's for sure - people are just being dumb (as evidenced by the box office, aside from Pathaan, has been a disaster).
Selfiee is, by no means, one of Akshay's greatest roles ever - and probably not Emraan's either. But it's nowhere near 'bad' or anything either. Probably what hurts it most is that it depends entirely on being an emotional drama (with that random attempt at comedy that is the other actor, which arguably wasn't really needed for the story - but I guess it works a bit better than having him be a completely serious competitor) - and in a day of crazy action movies, emotional drama appears to be a bit harder for people to sit through.
At it's core, though, it reminds me a lot of Taxi No. 9211 (which I absolutely love!) - it's not as good, in my biased opinion, possibly because by making one of the characters a 'big name actor' (in the movie, I mean, not because they cast Akshay Kumar), the movie automatically goes to a much larger scale than the individual battle between Jai and Raghav. That battle is contained between them, and their loved ones, and one poor rule follower/pencil pusher at a bank; whereas here, almost immediately, it becomes a full-scale nationwide thing involving not just 'a common man,' but instead the "Common Man." And that just seems to be a bit harder to pull off, especially about something like a driving test (like, what the hell is up with that 10 question test he gives him; are they able to freestyle questions like that?).
The other movie that comes to mind is An Action Hero - which is sort of funny, because Akshay had a guest appearance in that role where he was advising Ayushman's character on what to do in that setting. Of course, in that movie, it was the death of someone and not just a driving test issue - and also, of course, the movies are completely different and pursue completely different stories. But the idea of an actor 'gone rogue' (less rogue, here, since he's actually able to defend himself) and the country up in arms about the sudden lack of deitiness of their self-annointed god is very similar - to the point where, in both movies, we have a bunch of very, very annoying media people who just do not shut up.
As this movie progressed, I saw more and more similarities to Taxi No. 9211 - Emraan as Nana, Akshay as John. And while the scale is much more grand, the basic battle - egos; common man versus rich man - in the backdrop of a time limit brought forth by something out of their control is very similar. Not as fun, here, maybe - I don't want to keep harping on it, but I really do think a lot of it had to do with the overzealous public that was over-the-top invested in everything - but still pretty fun overall.
Main Khiladi Tu Anari is obviously a fun song (though, sadly, it's an end credit song - though, given the gist of the movie, I think that was pretty obvious from the moment the song released) - a rant about Bollywood's obsession with destroying old classics with remixes instead of just coming up with new stuff aside - but the song at the beginning was just meh. The background music that played was pretty cool. Akshay and Emraan are, obviously, absolutely fantastic. Absolutely love them. Diana Penty sadly has very little scope, and Nushrratt Bharuccha's role is only slightly bigger. Adah Sharma was a surprise, in the sense that I had no idea she was going to be in the movie.
I do like that they didn't drag everything out too far and give us too many false endings (a la Pathaan, or RRR) - the whole thing is about a driving test, and they do pretty good about sorta sticking to that. There's probably a lot that could be said about the over deification of stars by the public (very similar to the bullshit that goes on with some politicians here, and with religious zealots here and there) and how ridiculously people act in that setting (see: the paparazzi, aka media, the entire movie; the fans at the end, once Akshay leaves; the talking media heads on the TV, egging everything on), but sadly, we're probably a long, long time from that changing. Whether you should ever think of some such celebrity as a god is questionable (no; the answer is a very simple no); but the society is such that so many people do it (see, again, the success of Pathaan, for example, and the stupid zealots that keep pushing a boycott over things like the color of a sari or lyrics in a song or words in a dialogue or content in a book).
I really did enjoy this movie, and I would not be opposed to watching it again for entertainment.

Amitabh Bachchan: The Actor, The Superstar, The Living Legend
Tumblr media
October 11, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
When I first watched Sholay as a naïve seven-year old girl, I didn’t realize that this was the beginning of a love affair with the movies and the enigmatic persona of Amitabh Bachchan. For the first time, I saw Bachchan as an actor, not a superstar. It is surprising since Sholay is one of the few films during Bachchan’s prime years, that isn’t typically remembered as a “Bachchan film.” Its prominence as an Indian cinema classic derives from the ensemble nature of the film, an amalgamation of brilliant performances, succinct writing, legendary music, and path-breaking cinematography and direction. But still, I felt drawn to his performance as the laid back, hilariously sarcastic Jai. Maybe his performance stood out due to the subdued nature of the character, a stark contrast to the remaining performances in the film. Or maybe my perception was influenced by the manner in which I had been exposed to his work before watching Sholay.
Tumblr media
Like many Indian kids, growing up in the 21st century, my introduction to Amitabh Bachchan began with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. As a young four year old, I was aware of his status as a legend. But no more than that. My view of him was strictly limited to the fatherly figure I had witnessed in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Mohabbatein, and later Kyun Ho Gaya Naa. My parents, uncles, and aunts, who were avid watchers of his films, had spent their childhood years during the Bachchan era. So, between the ages of four and seven, alongside these newer films, I was shown Bachchan films from the 70s. There was Bachchan, the angry young man, in Zanjeer and Deewar. There was Bachchan the comic star in Chupke Chupke and Amar Akbar Anthony. There was Bachchan, the stylish star in Don. But in all these, he was a “star.” No different than his contemporaries, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, etc. By the time I watched Sholay, I had grown accustomed to seeing his younger self on screen, albeit in a very different manner. Not only did Sholay display his strong acting skills elevated above his superstar status, but it also prompted me to reexamine some of his films that I had viewed earlier, with a more rounded perception of his character. I found his acting to be far more subdued than his contemporaries, who had given into the norm of louder acting in the 70s. Even in roles where he was required to be loud, such as Namak Halaal, Kaalia, Suhaag, Mr. Natwarlal, etc. he managed to keep his acting toned, and far away from criticism for overacting.
Tumblr media
My love for Amitabh Bachchan cemented itself after my viewing of Sholay and only continued to grow as I eagerly watched more and more of his work. By the age of 10, I had seen 40 films of his. And now, 10 years later, by the age of 20, I have seen 80! So obsessed was I with his work, that the 10-year old me, decided to write a letter to Amitabh Bachchan for a school assignment where we had to write to a famous person. To me, no one on earth could be more famous than Amitabh Bachchan. My classmates wrote to a wide range of American celebrities. One person even wrote to the U.S. president. But I was clear. My letter would go to India. It would go to my idol Amitabh Bachchan. In this letter, I recounted my love for him and his work, to the best ability that I could as a 10 year old. It included the number of films I had seen of his, my obsession with Sholay, and a few sentences on my favorite scene from Sholay, when Jai throws colors in Gabbar’s eyes. Though I never got a response, the process of mailing a handwritten letter to my favorite actor was extremely exciting and gratifying. Hopefully, one day I will get the opportunity to meet him and I will present to him the copy of the letter that I keep safely in my room.
Tumblr media
I still wonder what prompted my love for Bachchan to grow to an extent that was far beyond any other kid in my generation. My generation reveres him, respects him, but their knowledge of him is limited to just that. They don’t passionately react to his films in the same way that they might react to Shahrukh Khan, or Ranbir Kapoor. I still get surprised looks when I tell people that my favorite film is Sholay and my favorite actor Amitabh Bachchan. He is the only actor, whose films I will watch regardless of the quality of the film. I will go watch a horrible film like Thugs of Hindostaan in theaters, just because of my faith in the ability of his acting performance to transcend story, cinematography, and direction.
Tumblr media
He is an actor, he is a superstar, he is a legend. But more than that he is an inspiration for all generations, including those to come. There is so much left to say about him, so many more experiences, so many more films. This one page article cannot do justice to the legendary superstar that he is.
