What thought process do you go through when making a playlist? I want to make one for my fic but im having trouble remembering songs and finding new ones with the right /vibe/. Thanks!
so i have a very particular way of going about making mixes because they are very important to me and i think they can be really great fanworks if done well. while making a long-ass list of songs that remind you of something is pretty common and valid, i have a specific strategy that i follow. i’m about to ramble for a long time so i’ll stick this under a read more
usually i don’t start making a mix unless i have a few songs already that really remind me of a character/ship/story - i don’t decide “hey i’m gonna make a mix” from nothing. those songs usually set the tone of the mix, be it lyrically or musically. i tend to focus more on lyrics since they convey characterization the most to me.
musically, i like to have a little bit of variance in terms of genre and style within the same mix to keep things interesting. however, i like to make sure those different genres and styles still jive together cohesively and it’s not jarring to switch from one song to the next. for example, i tend to have pop, folk, and rock all the same mix, but i make sure that there are songs that transition between the genres well. i don’t find it pleasant to listen to a mix and jump from regina spektor immediately to dubstep (you shouldn’t have both those genres on the same mix anyway because again - doesn’t jive). just because a song fits a character doesn’t mean it belongs on a good mix. be choosy and figure out what purpose that song serves within the whole of the playlist.
i also never put songs from the official soundtrack on my mixes. that defeats the purpose to me - i make mixes to show “hey, these songs really fit this character in one way or another and you should check them out!” if someone has already watched dmcb, for instance, they already know that “buddy, ryo” fits that character and know that song. why is it taking up space on a fanmix?
i also limit myself to 10-15 songs per mix usually. i think that’s a good amount for people to skip around if they don’t like a song or two but also not be so long as to be boring and weighty. i want someone to be able to sit down, listen to my mix all the way through, and enjoy the experience. i also limit myself to a max of two songs by the same artist (aka the “we get jordan, you like the mountain goats” rule)
i organize my mixes such that they follow (more or less) the character arc/plotline. i don’t just make a long list of songs that remind me of something - i do that privately for my own enjoyment, but i don’t publish something as a mix unless it’s organized and polished. i always listen to my mixes all the way through at least twice before i publish to make sure it flows well
in terms of finding songs - i have a few go-to bands that i always check first because they’re my favorites (los campesinos, the mountain goats). like i said, i always have a few songs in mind already when i start making a mix, but if i need more, i just bounce around bands i know that have the vibe i’m looking for - usually i have a lyrics site pulled up and hunt around there for fitting lyrics. if you’re using spotify, listen to your weekly recommendations that they make for you and use the daily mix function. that’s a good way to find new music with sounds that you like. and of course, ask your friends for recommendations!

Here’s the whole shebang, including a writeup of the top 25! Rules: only one song from each artist, had to be released in 2017
In Undertow - Alvvays: This song just floored me. Their previous album is also excellent but this song, in both lyrics and general vibe, is fantastic.
tonite - LCD Soundsystem: So glad these guys are back. It was tough to pick just one song but this one wins for the lyric “You hate the idea that you're wasting your youth/That you stood in the background oh until you got older/But that's all lies” just because I relate to it so much. LCD is the ultimate dad band.
Undercover - Kehlani: Holy crap, WHERE did this song come from? It’s so catchy, I could listen to it all day.
Fantasy Folly - Dreamspook: My friend Gabriel is unbelievably talented as a songwriter. When I hear a Dreamspook song I think, “Oh duh. This is how a song should sound.” I really had trouble picking one from this album too but the synth solo on this is so sick I couldn’t pass it up.
The Evil Has Landed - Queens of the Stone Age: This album wasn’t gold all the way through but I like the new sound/direction regardless. Certainly as catchy as QOTSA has been in years.
Rose-Colored Boy - Paramore: If you told me 10 years ago that I would be listening to a Paramore album on the regular I wouldn’t have believed you but here we are. I fully approve of Paramore’s shift into pop.
Hairstyle - Wuh Oh: Don’t know where I stumbled on this song but this is a pretty accurate take on the kind of music I listen to when I want to focus on drawing or reading. It’s like all of my favorite Soundcloud artists mashed into one.
Broken Clocks - SZA: Generally not the type of song I would get into but hot dang just listen to it. This one is straight silk.
Die Young - Sylvan Esso: A perfect example of the best of Sylvan Esso, and gets bonus points for being a crazy lyrical premise that somehow comes off as more sweet than morbid.
Tired As Fuck - The Staves: Saw these three live for the first time and they really blew the roof off the building. This song just builds in a great way and really shows off their vocal talent.
Los Ageless - St. Vincent: Annie Clark can do no wrong.
The Apprentice - Gorillaz: This is a bonus track from the deluxe edition and it’s better than the entirety of the album. There were a couple of bangers on Humanz but if the whole album was as good as this song it would have been in constant rotation. Still have high hopes for the next album coming out in 2018.
High Ticket Attractions - The New Pornographers: I’ve always liked the idea of these guys but I think this is the first song to really make me love them.
If You Need To, Keep Time On Me - Fleet Foxes: I wasn’t patient enough to unpack this album but this was a nice breather in between 10 minute mega-songs so I latched on immediately.
Touched Fuzzy, Got Dizzy - OKOKKO: Another Soundcloud artist that caught my attention this year; this album had some real gems on it. Sampling Yoshi sound effects is really inspired.
Ran - Future Islands: Some day I’ll get really into these albums but until then I’ll just love whatever the first single is. This one’s just really pleasant.
Real Stuff - Leif Erikson: This one’s a little corny but it really grooves.
Lemon - N.E.R.D.: whaaaaaaaaaat who was expecting another album from these guys? This really gets great once Rihanna hops in.
Chained To The Rhythm - Katy Perry: Katy can really hire some people to write a pop song.
J-Boy - Phoenix: Really want to get into this whole album, didn’t even realize how much I missed Phoenix. These guys just exude pure joy with every song.
Truth Hurts - Lizzo: Lizzo is brilliant because she can write a catchy song and also make it incredibly funny.
Tonya Harding (in Eb Major) - Sufjan Stevens: Sufjan is truly incredible at showing sympathy for the subjects of his songs, and this one’s no different.
Rain in Soho - The Mountain Goats: People really seem to worship John Darnielle but this is maybe like the 4th song of his that I’ve really liked enough to listen to on repeat.
HUMBLE - Kendrick Lamar: Don’t need to say anything about this, just Kendrick at his best per usual.
Pleasure - Feist: Feist can keep doing her thing forever and I’ll keep liking it.
The other 15: They’re also great!

Oh, wow, here’s something I just noticed - @slufac tagged me in one of those “About Me”-type things. Thanks for not telling me, tumblr!
Nickname: I never really had an actual nickname per se, but since my name is “Aaron”, I’ve had plenty of people call me “A-A-Ron”.
Zodiac: Sagittarius!
Height: I think, like, five-foot-eight the last time I checked, but I was five-foot-seven for the longest time.
Last Thing I Googled: “van morrison dweller on the threshold lyrics”. (Here’s the link to that song, by the way, [x])
Favorite Musical Artist: You know, I would say The Mountain Goats, but lately, I’ve been really into Car Seat Headrest.
Song Stuck In My Head: “We Do It Different on the West Coast” by The Mountain Goats. (Here’s a link to that song, by the way [x])
Last Movie I Saw: The last movie I watched was technically Blazing Saddles, but (unpopular opinion incoming!) I thought it was too stupid to watch, so I turned it off about fifteen minutes in. The last movie I watched to completion was This Is Spinal Tap.
What Am I Wearing Right Now: Just pajamas.
Why Did I Choose My URL: I just got back from watching a live performance of The Producers when I decided to make my tumblr, and I couldn’t believe that nobody snatched up this primo URL yet.
Do I Have Any Other Blogs: I’ll probably make a new sideblog in a little while.
What Did I Learn From My Last Relationship: Oof, that’s kind of a heavy question. Uhhh, I guess, you can’t make somebody love you - or even like or tolerate you - if their heart isn’t in it.
Religious or Spiritual: I'm a Christian, but I still believe pretty whole-heartedly in occult stuff, too.
Favorite Color: Burgundy, if I had to choose.
Average Hours of Sleep: Now that summer’s started, I’m getting a nice eight hours of sleep per day, from 3 AM to 11 AM, which is a big step up from the 3-to-8 sleep schedule I usually had during the school year.
Lucky Number: I know it’s cliche, but 7.
Favorite Characters: I have a few.
Ulysses Everett McGill from O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Mr. Nancy from American Gods and Anansi Boys.
Kilgore Trout from, gosh, pretty much all of Kurt Vonnegut’s books.
(Not Timequake, though, I thought that one was kind of a dud.)
How Many Blankets Do I Sleep With: Always one, no matter how hot or cold it gets.
Dream Job: I really want to be a mathematics professor one day.
I tag @l0nelyz0mbie, @atomcatz, @backstageperformer, and I guess anybody else whose dash this shows up on.
