First and foremost, thank you for joining us in this gracious space. Confronted with the installation of various paintings by Daniel Gianfranceschi and the newest Maison Rose x Monokel collection launch one may spot a certain shared interest in materials. The collaborative suit by Louis Renaud from Maison Rose is a reinterpretation of a classic Monokel suit. Double breasted in nature, the suit, made out of the finest Irish linen, is meant to be something to be worn for ages, for by the grace of time the material may unfold it´s truest characteristics. The hand finished buttonholes serve as a remainder of traditional tailoring – the roots of a brand like Monokel and a core interest for Louis Renaud. Furthermore, a suit, by no surprise, will always give the wearer a certain attitude. Think of figures like Warren Ellis or the ever-performing Iggy Pop, almost not existing without their trademark attire. In this sense, Maison Rose and Monokel present a garment that is built for even the finest of occasions while, at the same time, not being afraid of the (almost needed) wear and tear. Make the product your own.
While talking about this collision of ideas, one cannot miss the almost evident absence of bright colors. This is as clear as ever in the new works from the ongoing “Crawl Spaces” by German/Italian artist Daniel Gianfranceschi. All canvases being wrapped in a jute-like linen fabric, they firstly present themselves like a blank sheet, awaiting reception. Being reduced to two compositional elements (black and brown), they seem to recall holes, shadows, pits, comfort zones. These pits, these somewhat formless-but-bound-to-the-circle forms that are swallowed by the accumulation of monochrome tones and the lack of (the so-called negative space, a key aspect of Gianfranceschi´s work. Negative space as the areas left untethered by the artist, revealing the true nature of the material.) are materializations of a paradox. A bottomless pit, a space one can never leave, a hiding spot the one leaves only on the rarest of occasions (maybe, a Burrow, after all?) as to escape and, yet, willingly accepting the place on inhabits. They seem to live a life of their own, each one hiding and revealing something different and all of them at once trying to escape while being fully self-aware of the impossibility of playing both parts.
The window installation offers a more minimal approach to the Crawl Spaces series. Serving to only as a wholly finished work in itself, the rolls of linen also highlight the aforementioned suit by Maison Rose x Monokel, coming full-circle after all.
Christa Winsloe: Gender Rights Advocate (ca. late 1920's)
Painter go* for a walk and look for motifs, for this purpose they* stop in front of, say, a meadow, love the right side—in the direction to the monocle—contrived by the eye*, step back, step forward, shake their head, and walk farther.

(*Chris used "they" as gender neutral word, so any noun for a person (he\she, third singular pronoun) has a verb with conjugation form of third plural "they." 👏👏👏)
