One of the most buzzed about titles coming out of last year’s Cannes Film Film Festival was British writer-director Molly Manning Walker’s feature film debut How To Have Sex. After its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the French festival, the film screened at festivals around the globe, including the Toronto International Film Festival (where I saw it) and most recently the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. Like her short film Good Thanks, You?, Walker mined her own experience with sexual assault as a teenager to craft a film that is as intensely personal as it is, unfortunately, universal.
I spoke to Walker over Zoom about the visceral connection audiences have had with the film, the importance of having a therapist available on set, achieving short girl cinematic representation, the filmmakers who inspire her, and more.
