Additional notes on this AU below the cut:
* Some of the aircraft flown by certain squadrons got upgraded from earlier models to the newest and best versions available, assuming the nation is either the originator of said variant, or IMO able to afford it monetarily and diplomatically
* includes fanon names for many characters not given full names
* McKinsey's first name is Dick (in canon we know it starts with a D), and I cannot be convinced otherwise
* a new LRSSG squadron has been made (Gorgon) to fit the reassigned Spares (Alexander "Tabloid" Foulke is squadron lead, members include Avril, Full Band, High Roller, and other former Spares
* all squadrons are now properly 12 aircraft, though most of the members do get the "generic Spare" treatment bc I cannot be bothered to fill up 36 spaces on a TO&E, even for the LRSSG). Rage and Scream, old friends of Trigger's, had their contract bought out by Trigger herself and now fly with the group.
* many cool fanon skins have been turned into full squadrons
* Brownie lives and becomes squadron leader after Knocker bites it being dumb and trying to fight Mihaly (who properly ignored two retreating aircraft openly broadcasting that they were doing so)
* Razgriz is here! It consists of Blaze (proper name I made up for him: Daemon Nacht), Bartlett (now married to his Yuke spy waifu), Chopper (who landed in the river, and still listens to Blurry) and Grimm (who remains as extremely competent as ever). They now fly F-14
* OMC and OANG squadrons get some love!
* Labarthe lives, and unites a lot of the Erusean Conservatives into a functional faction that properly allies with the Oseans. Shilage's independence claim is respected, and so Mihaly doesn't get shot down and gets to fight alongside Trigger
* Some of the named Aces show up (pulled from an excellent mod on Nexus that created actual assault records for the enemy aces from 7; the Su-47 from Cape Rainy, an EASA test pilot; the F/A-18 from Faceless Soldier; now an EASA field coordinator for a whole Hornet/Flanker drone squadron, has a Copro unit as a backseater like Mihaly, named "Copine"; the MiG-21 ace from the first mission returns to head a squadron that all use Su-35s, except for him: Silber vibes); the Mirage ace from Stonehenge shows up as the leader of Erusea's demonstration team that got swept up into actual combat; the Su-35 ace from the night Anchorhead mission is retconned into a Conservative ex-noble who stays alive.
* Many named squadrons survive/get reconstituted as they would in actual wartime.
* Yellow Squadron is here! Yellow 4 didn't act dumb and stayed behind after getting guerilla-bombed in AC04, so she leads the Yellows now. She and Mobius got along so well after the war that they got married. Her name is Algerian-based and her callsign is the French word for "catgirl" bc some Yellow 13 concept art had a catgirl on his flight jacket.
* Rosa gets Royal Guards now, some flying F-15EX and some flying X-02S. They are very competent, despite their ceremonial functions and fancy white-and-orange Erusean rose paintjobs.
* An Erusean intelligence/internal security squadron called "Polonium" works with the LRSSG in taking out the Alicorn
* The Alicorn has an anti-mutiny occur during the events of SP03, and doesn't get sunk, goes on to form a naval dream with the Marigold and the Eminent Domain. Torres gets to rant about "crisp white sheets" in a jail cell.
* The Erusean cowboy F-4 pilots from SP01 get to stick around since they weren't TGTs in that mission, and they were fun as hell
* The one poor MiG-31 with all the "mechanical issues" from SP01 and SP02 ends up leading the squadron by virtue of being the only one still alive, which may or may not be one of the squadrons that did the Erusean side of the satellite oopsie via ASAT missiles (like the MiG-31 can carry IRL)
* Nuclear ordnance is considered as a backup to Stonehenge in taking out the Arsenal Birds. Luckily Railgun Mommy McOnie gets Stonehenge working as in canon (and without randomly using civilians as surveyors)
* Lots of countries represented in an actual multinational IUN set up! Yukes! Belkans! Ustio! Emmeria! Estovakia! Cascadia! The Federation!

The One Strange, Real Thing You Can't Replace
I couldn't find this iconic story's animatic for Ace Combat fandom, so I decided to make one myself. Then I realized, in wise words of another Tumblr user I forgot: "I make Art.txt, not Art.png" But that didn't stop me. Anyway here goes:
Rush hour in the Sky Kid Bar in Expo City. A group of nuggets from New Arrows Air Base gather around their mentor to hear another war story. He was a veteran of many conflicts and a former member of a few ace squadrons, regular and special taskforces. His TAC name was Count.
"Another story I heard about myself, this one happened during another Free Erusea uprising. There was this ace in the enemy air force, whose protégé flew in the enemy air force. His name was Mihaly Dumitru Margareta Corneliu Leopold Blanca Karol Aeon Ignatius Raphael Maria Niketas A. Shilage and his apprentice Yellow 13 was in the enemy squadron. He started flying in the Continental War while I started in the Lighthouse War, so he was 1 war ahead. And Mihaly… was an asshole.
"And one weekend he and his granddaughters decided to leave the air base. Which you should never do if you're an asshole. And Yellow 13 decided to patrol the airspace above their base. Hurray! And everyone in the Joint Assault Peacekeeping Squadron heard about it, and we all got up individually and thought: Okay, let's go over there and destroy the place.
"I entered the AO, everyone I had ever met was there, and everyone was flying like it was a superweapon fight. People were flying like it was the Belkan War and Pixy was coming to cut our wings off with that laser.
"It was totally unsupervised. Long Caster was baking a birthday cake for Eagle Eye and Oka Nieba with Bandog were making Thunderhead loosen up by force. We were like Spare Squadron, we were running wild.
"I descend- I descended to a lower altitude, they had a castle on a hill. Talisman took a Strike Eagle and dropped an SFFS on the castle and leveled it. Trigger packed Avril into his WSO seat, and found out which hangar was Mihaly's and landed and disassembled his Flanker.
"So the operation was going great.
"I'm flying low and I'm doing a cobra, you've seen Top Gun: Maverick, and I'm flying low, and I'm doing a cobra, and I'm starting to black out. And I guess someone said like <<something, something, Gründer>> and in a brilliant moment of word association, I yelled <<Fuck Belkan witchcraft!>>.
"<<Fuck Belkan witchcraft!>>.
"And everyone else joined in. A dozen of G-LOCed pilots, some of them of Belkan descent yelling <<Fuck. Belkan. Witchcraft.>>. With the confidence of guys who have, like, already been to solitary and aren’t afraid of it anymore. You know that like ‘I’ll take whatever the hell action I see fit’ confidence.
“The reason someone had said <<something, something, Gründer>> was because the Z.O.E. drones were there. So Doctor Schroeder went into the enemy command center and looked at the cluster of radar signatures and heard a bunch of pilots yelling <<Fuck Belkan witchcraft!>> on the open comms. And he was almost impressed. He was like <<Enthralling>>.
“And then he switched to their radio frequency and went <<Deploy Nemo>>. And my friend Jaeger, who is a father- This man has a son, he did a PSM, released a cloud of flares and yelled <<Scatter!>>.
“And everyone flew in a different directions, we all flew in different directions. It was like that moment when Eruseans deployed MQ-99s in Scofields Plateau and they all went different ways, we all flew in different directions.
“I followed Trigger along the river, and we entered a valley, and I’m flying through the valley and there’s this narrow highway tunnel, and I thought <<I’ve never flew through a tunnel that small before>> and then I woke up in the hangar.
“On Monday, I went on a mission because that’s what we did back then. And I’m entering the AO and who do I fight, but Yellow 13 and he says to me <<Hey, were you in Shilage on Saturday?>>.
“And I said <<Negative>>, you know, like a con man.
“And he said <<Things got really out of hand. Someone destroyed the castle. Someone took apart Mihaly’s Su-30.>>.
“<<But the worst thing>> he says, <<The worst thing is that someone stole these old Voslage Air Force patches and the Sol Squadron are freaking out about it.>>.
“And I had that thought that only pilots shooting at tents and Full Band can have. Did- Did I do that?
"I figured no, I wouldn't have done that, but I was never sure until, 2 years later- Relax" He said to nuggets going wild.
"I'm doing a BFM exercise with this ace, TAC name Cipher that we also fought along with. 2 years later, 3 new Free Erusea uprisings were over by now. We're practicing basic fighter maneuvers for a while and then Cipher says to me <<Hey, come here. I want to show you something>>.
"We land and he takes me to his hangar, and then he takes me into the back section of his hangar that's closed behind a curtain. Never a good thing to have. He shows me a tiny cork board that is covered in different patches of disbanded squadrons, pillaged from different air bases over the years.
"And I said 'Why?'. 'Why do you do this?'
"And Cipher said 'Because it's the one thing you can't replace".

"You're quite entertaining, I'll give you that", said Mihaly as his stand, Archange, landed another devastating blow, sending Count flying across the Shilage town square. Almost defeated Osean managed to overcome the pain enough to stand up. His legs were shaking and he was leaving red handprints all over the town hall's wall, crawling away from Mr. X. Just 6 meters to the corner of the building. 5 meters. 4.
Mihaly slowly walked up to him, enough to be heard without raising his voice. He knew Count was done for. Granted, the hot headed fighter managed to get on his nerves earlier, and landed a critical shot with his stand. Only thanks to Archange's speed Mihaly lost a finger instead of an arm. But now the battle was essentially won. Mihaly had just one thing left to do.
"Your High Card is an impressive stand indeed. It can deal a lot of damage over long distances. But it's slower than Archange and when using it's special ability, Top Score, it only lands 50% of its punches." Mihaly made Archange jump up. The stand shot up until it was just an orange dot on the blue sky. Mihaly remained motionless, observing as Count collapses by the corner of the city hall. The old man's voice was calm and emotionless when he said "The show is over with the next shot."
Archange barreled down from high altitude. It was like a shooting star, an Ulysses fragment about to disintegrate Count. It closed in fast and landed a punch right on Osean's forehead. It echoed through the empty city and raised a cloud of dust. The air was grey. Mihaly stepped closer to examine the body. He caught a glimpse of a silhouette when-
"The show is over alright", said a voice in front of him. "But not for me."
The dust settled. Count was on his knees, still bleeding but Archange couldn't bring him lower, even with its fist on top of Count's head. The stand pressed harder but Osean didn't budge. Another punch bounced off of him, and ricochetted into the wall.
"This corner feels familiar, doesn't it?" Count grinned. "You brought me exactly where I wanted to be."
Mihaly's face got pale. Throughout the battle Sols and Striders fought across the entire city, but this corner had a significance. There Mihaly managed to defeat Trigger. He punched him into the city hall from the outside. He saw Trigger's body covered in splinters from a broken staircase. The hole in the wall was just around the corner. Could it be possible that-
"Stick with Trigger and you'll make it."
Trigger announced his stand's ability emerging from behind the building. He was unscathed.
"Skies Unknown can protect allies in 3 meters radius from it. If Count was just a couple of centimeters to the right, you would've killed him."
"But... You were almost dead!" Mihaly couldn't believe his eyes. "You were laying in the center of that building!"
"You knew about Trigger and Count..." said another voice, from behind. Mihaly turned, shocked.
"You knew about Jaeger and Húxiān and Lanza but there was another stand user you didn't account for." The person who said it was a young woman, probably still in her twenties, slowly walking out of the city hall's front doors.
"My name is Avril Mead. My stand, Drag Racer can travel at high speeds in a straight line and it's ability, Scrap Queen can heal any wound. I was waiting on a hill outside of the city. When the battle started I used the chaos to sneak into the city hall and healed Trigger from his injuries."
"Now turn around, Mihaly" commanded Trigger. Mihaly complied. He looked around his shoulder, took the first step, a second, and-
"Archange! Attack!"
The stand appeared and threw a straight punched aimed at Trigger.
"Drag Racer!" Something passed him. It was just wind. A light breeze, no sound. Mihaly looked, hoping to see Trigger splattered across the wall but then a sonic boom deafened him. Avril's stand intercepted Archange. The fight was over.
"Skies Unknown! Fox Two!"

This is the same one who request the Ciphixy family fic( amazing work by the way) and I have a another Cipihixy fic request if your interested. Cipher visit the grave of their parents on the anniversary of their deaths with Pixy tagging along and maybe Merlin
Thank you so much for the request! I wound up going with my version of Cipher, who was from Shilage and whose parents were killed in the revolution.
Also on AO3
Family Reunion
Out of all the impossible things they had seen over the years, Cipher never thought that would have seen an independent Shilage ever again. Much less be able to walk the streets with their family.
It felt almost dreamlike, the shade of the trees and the cool breeze protecting them from the bright summer sun. Pixy’s hand, enclosed around them, more than made up for the warmth. Merlin wandered around, sometimes in front, sometimes behind, asking seemingly whatever questions came to mind. Cipher answered them to the best of their ability, but the last time they had been younger than she was.
Lots of things had changed in the close to forty years since they left, but some things stayed the same. There was a clothing store where there used to be a bakery. CIpher wondered what happened to the baker who gave them stale bread instead of letting them starve on the street, despite the risk of getting caught by revolutionaries. The flower shop they stopped at was the same. The boy working the counter was the son of the girl who sold them flowers the day they graduated flight school. One last visit, before deserting and becoming a mercenary. Cipher requested the same bouquet. Carnations and bluebells. Not the traditional mourning bouquet, but bluebells were the flower on their family crest, and carnations were their mother’s favorite.
They should have done this sooner. They hid behind the excuse that it would have been a lot of work, planning a trip across the world just to visit a graveyard, but they had gone out of their way so Pixy could visit his parent’s memorial. The simple truth was that they felt guilty. Their parents were noble and proud pillars of the community. Cipher gave up everything out of spite. What would they say if they saw what their child had become?
Pixy squeezed their hand. “You okay?”
Right. They weren’t alone anymore. “Yeah. I’ll be fine.”
“We still have time. We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”
“I know, but I do want to. Leap of faith, right?” Besides, they were here for the anniversary. There wouldn’t be another time like this.
Pixy smiled and squeezed their hand again. They finally made their way to the cemetery, attached to a park where Cipher’s childhood home used to be. They had been unspeakably angry when it was first put in, offended that Erusia used the site of such a personal tragedy as a PR move. Now, most of the bitterness had faded. People came to relax and be happy, and Cipher knew their parents would have been content with it.
The graveyard itself was meticulously maintained, probably thanks to Mihaly. They would have to speak to him later. He was the real reason behind the trip anyway. Three Strikes and the King of the Skies were to publicly shake hands and make peace in order to help solidify the shaky alliance between Erusia and the newly independent nations. Cipher still wasn’t sure how they felt about their daughter being close friends with the Queen of Erusia, but Merlin turned out to be quite the peacemaker. No idea where she inherited that from.
Merlin had already spent a day with him at the hospital. Maybe if Cipher never left, Mihaly would have been her mentor. Then again, if they had never left Shilage, they probably would have never met Pixy, and Merlin might have never been born.
The gravestones they were looking for were tucked away in a far corner, away from prying eyes. Pure white limestone stood tall, engraved with the names of those underneath. Another bouquet of wilted white lilies lay at the base. Now they really owed Mihaly an apology. All through their childhood, they assumed that he only took them in because that was expected of him, but he cared enough about their parents to memorialize them. Maybe it was the betrayal that made him so distant.
Fire away, coward. Well, they knew something about that, didn’t they? They just had people to lean on.
Cipher laid the flowers at the base, and took a seat in the grass, still cool from the shade. “Hey. It’s been a while, huh? Sorry I didn’t come sooner. Life’s been a little crazy, and I didn’t exactly choose a peaceful lifestyle. I’m sorry for that, too. I know how much you guys wanted me to do something good with my life and help people, but things just didn’t work out.”
There was something that felt incredibly childish about the whole thing. Maybe it was sitting in the grass, talking to someone who couldn’t hear them, or maybe it was the nostalgia, or maybe they just missed their mom and dad. Tears started to burn in their eyes. They looked down, not wanting to let anyone see the moment of weakness.
An arm wrapped around their shoulder, and Cipher was pulled into Pixy’s warm embrace. He pressed a kiss to the top of their head, and rubbed their arm while they tried to compose themself. After a few moments of wiping their eyes, they hugged him back.
“This is my husband, Larry. He’s a good man, and I think you guys would’ve really liked him. And if you didn’t, I probably would have married him anyway.”
Pixy laughed, voice incredulous. “Are you sure about that?”
“You think you were the first person I’ve ever been stubborn to. I would’ve married you out of spite.”
He only laughed harder, and Merlin started to laugh, too. Cipher put a hand on her shoulder. “This is our daughter, Merlin. She’s the one who kicked Mihaly’s ass. I’m very proud of her.”
Merlin waved at the headstone, face red. “Hello.”
It felt nice, to finally be able to introduce their family like this. As their little family reminisced about the past, and discussed the uncertain future, it felt like a huge weight lifted from Cipher’s shoulders. Maybe their parents would have been proud of them. They stayed for a long time, only leaving because it was starting to get dark. As Cipher finally stood up, they decided they would come back next year.

Based off a dream I had:
What if Trigger (and possibly others) were created using the DNA of old aces. Think Mihaly and other pilots like him. Of course they’re not identical clones, they just kind of shoved the dna of other pilots into some random kids or something, idk, each child matches their own ace. Anyway, these kids are born and taught growing up everything they need to become the next aces, from everything that makes a plane fly to different maneuvers used in a dogfight. They're taught everyday of their life how to be the next aces.
Some of the kinder scientists, those who don't completely agree to the experiment but still participate, take pity on the children and teach them the more human side of life, like food, dancing, overall culture. These scientists are also the only reason the experiment kids weren't allowed to fly until they were adults. They pushed to keep them out of the skies AT LEAST until they were 18, trying to keep them alive for longer.
Eventually, after countless years training, they were sent to different countries to be a part of their Air Force. Trigger, obviously, was sent to Osea. The entire Harling incident was not planned, but they had to go along with it to not risk exposure.
There, without direct supervision, Trigger met the other pilots without having to constantly worry about if what he was doing was right or wrong. The most notable pilot was of course Count. Trigger never hated him for the other man's constant assault, if anything it made him feel more human. So he never fought back, and eventually with their transfer they became friends.
Strider and Cyclops squadron was similar, where he was left to his own devices. And, in doing so, was left learning more about the humanity behind his life. He learned friendship, laughter, companionship, as well as loss, hurt, and desperation. But the most important? Love. After a while Trigger noticed the difference in his and Count's relationship, and soon enough the other made a move that Trigger didn't fully understand but knew felt right.
Trigger was of course modeled after Mihaly. The legendary ace that he was trained for years to beat. But to be honest? Mister x scared the shit out of Trigger. The first time he had even came close to interacting with him, the older man killed Brownie and disappeared without a trace. Trigger didn't even catch a glance of the other man's jet, and yet his overseers pushed and prodded for hours after to try and find a reason for his failure.
Every other time, the fear comes from his own anxiety, rather than that given to him by the constant harassment of scientists.
This is the same man Trigger is designed to be. This is the same man Trigger is supposed to kill. This is the same man Trigger cannot seem to beat. Every time Mihaly appears, someone dies, and Trigger is helpless to stop it. First Brownie, next Champ, then Wiseman. How can Trigger be trained his entire life for this fight and still not stop it? He fears the same man he knows he is destined to become.
Count, as hard as he tries, isn't the most helpful. He doesn't understand what Trigger's going through. He thinks it's just nerves, maybe even a bit of ptsd seeing how many of their friends have died because of him. But the experiment that created Trigger is under such tight wraps that it's impossible for him to truly understand exactly what Triggers going through.
Trigger is nervous to tell Count the truth of his past, too scared to lose the only real thing in his life. He doesn’t know how the other will react, if he’ll take it reasonably well or if he’ll drop everything. He wants, desperately, to trust the other. But with something like this, how can he be certain?
Eventually there’s this whole revelation, probably some newspaper article revealing the whole experiment, I haven’t really thought that far. He’s brought back to the lab, unwillingly, where he meets Mihaly face to face. This could happen before or after the events at Shilage castle, which would obviously change the outcome of the meeting, but either way I think Mihaly would feel bad for Trigger.
He’s practically a kid at this point, at least compared to him. He respects him for the resolve he still has after everything the scientists have probably put him through. After everything Mihalys put him through, though unknowingly at the time. He won’t admit it, but guilt eats at him. He did what he should- treated Trigger as an equal. But knowing that he’s taken away multiple of the only people this kids ever had as a friend still isn’t exactly a comforting thought.
I like to thing he took on a sort of fatherly role for Trigger after everything was done. He had to do something after his (long overdue and against his will) retirement, why not teach the kid who is, in a way, his son? Obviously not exactly, but he shares his dna, so it’s good enough for him. Trigger (and most everyone from Osea) is hesitant at the idea, but they kept this experiment away from Mihaly too, so it was probably for the best they worked things out on the ground.
That’s pretty much all I’ve got, obviously Trigger and Count reunite after a bit and Trigger’s got a bit of a different out view on life now, after a little break from the military and finally getting a feel for life as a civilian. Though it was nice, he hated the feeling of sitting away from a cockpit for so long. True, it was what he was “made” for, but his love for it is entirely his own. Idk politics and all that, but the Osean govt. probably eventually relents on the thought “it’s better and easier for all of us if we just let him, either way we get a damn good pilot so we all win.” And Trigger gets to lead Strider squadron again.
Idk let me know if you wanna know anything else about this I just love weird angsty au’s and this dream was great for brainstorming this whole post.

“Right after the takeoff, as the wheels retracted, the plane suddenly arced up. It accelerated so quickly. I had never seen a plane move like that before. Mihaly hit the high G’s multiple times, before disappearing into the blue.”

You may think it's a custom in Erusean military to send their best squadron late to a battle over Farbanti on September 19th but that's actually just a Mihaly thing. During the raid on Shilage, Sol squadron was ready to take off as soon as they could, only Mihaly took his time to arrive with the sun. Dramatic entrance was probably the first thing Yellow 13 learned from him
