In the 1940s San Juan Parangaricutiro was consumed by lava, until it was completely buried, leaving only part of the old Sanctuary of the Lord of Miracles standing.

A Tlahualil is a dancer who wears an elaborate mask made out of cardboard. These marks are typically decorated with feathers, paint, and glitter, usually sporting both MesoAmerican and Catholic iconography. These dancers are an essential part of Sahuayo’s yearly patron Saint festival that lasts from the end of July to the beginning of August.
Culture posting again! I’m currently in Michoacán and stay near Sahuayo, so I’ve always been familiar with this festival and how lively the already active city gets. If anybody wants to do some more digging into this festival here’s the link!
