#bookreview * * * Synopsis: As a child Hester Wyatt escaped slavery, but now the dark skinned beauty is a dedicated member of Michigan's Underground railroad, offering other runaways a chance at the freedom she has learned to love. When one of her fellow conductors brings her an injured man to hide, Hester doesn't hesitate…even after she is told about the price on his head. * Book Review: This novel is my first (full length) #beverlyjenkins ! Clearly, Ms. Jenkins is a legend in black historical romance and this book is a great example. The Underground Railroad is extremely fascinating. Just considering the amount of risk someone takes on to combat the system is overwhelming - and this woman had the courage to fall in love. The romance was not cheesy, the heroine was tough. This particular romance is for lovers of the romance genre who are interested in trying out historical fiction. The steam levels are moderate - so don’t listen or read in public if you blush easily lol. I enjoyed the @audible version - the narration was great and since some of the characters have rich creole/French accents the audiobook added context and emotion. I also enjoyed learning about indigo plantations in the south. Did you know the extraction and pounding process could take 20 hours?! The brutality of this labor alongside the southern sun is completely barbaric. If you get a chance, please read up on the value of indigo during slavery. I was down a rat hole this whole weekend. * * * #bookstagram #chasingadventuresbookclub #bookish #romance #authorsofcolor #igreading #audiobooks #historicalfiction (at Harford County, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1oAC02AjgY/?igshid=w9opvrg15iqx
