Reposted from @bronxmuseum Join us this Saturday, January 6th, to celebrate the closing weekend of Michael Richards: Are You Down? with a special documentary film screening, discussion, and exhibition walkthrough. This culminating event will highlight Richards’ powerful sculpture and drawing practice, his friendships, the circumstances of his passing on September 11, 2001, and his enduring influence on cultural communities in New York City, Miami, and beyond.

A screening of the 30-minute documentary on Michael Richards titled Are You Down?, directed by #JuanMatos and Dennis Scholl @schollcreative, will be followed by a discussion moderated by Scholl, with artists #williamcordova and Dread Scott @dreadscottart and #MichèleWong, Deputy Director at the Grey Art Gallery, all of whom were friends with Richards. After the screening and discussion, exhibition curators Alex Fialho @alexfialho_ and Melissa Levin @melissalev will lead a walkthrough of the retrospective with cordova. This will be a unique opportunity to learn about Michael Richards from the perspective of those who knew him, offering an intimate look into Richards’ art, life, and legacy.

Más de veinte años después de su último episodio, Seinfeld se sostiene como uno de los grandes hitos culturales de la televisión. El mejor sitcom en la historia, una proeza insuperable. En un inicio, se esperaba tan poco del caprichoso programa sobre nada, qué NBC decidió no hacer la serie después de ordenar el piloto. Sin esperanzas de más episodios, el piloto salió al aire y generó suficiente interés como para que NBC cambiara de opinión y ordenara tres episodios más. Poco a poco, desde estos humildes comienzos, el sitcom tomaría tanto momentum que para las últimas temporadas, Jerry Seinfeld cobraba la cantidad récord de un millón de dólares por episodio. Hoy, la creación del programa parece milagrosa. ¿Bajo qué premisas operaban los canales de televisión que permitieron que algo así se colara entre sus aparatos de censura? Las limitaciones y exigencias del formato televisivo, desde la baja resolución, el límite de sets, un apretado calendario de producción y la censura a la que a Larry David, co-creador y principal guionista de la serie, admite le gustaba provocar, fueron lo que terminó dándole su forma a la serie.

La perfección icónica de Seinfeld es tan producto del genio de Larry David como de las restricciones bajo las que fue creada. La resolución limitada a 640 pixeles y el formato 4:3 en el que se transmitió originalmente, evidencian la falta de valor de las televisiones 4k de hoy. Estas pantallas que nos dejan ver de forma cada vez más nítida, son resultado de una guerra tecnológica en la que no hay ganadores y el resultado es una programación de imágenes estériles y homogenizadas, desechables y alejadas de cualquier relación con lo simbólico. En cambio Seinfeld, con sus imágenes de lectura inmediata y baja resolución, es un clásico. Las imágenes de Seinfeld mantienen a raya a la realidad y solo dejan pasar la cantidad necesaria. El humor consta de observaciones precisas sobre ideas generales, premisas con la que la mayoría del público está familiarizado, llevadas al absurdo de sus últimas consecuencias. Los títulos de episodios como El Robo, El Lugar de Estacionamiento, El Buen Samaritano, El Chico de la Burbuja, La Siesta, La Huelga, son claros ejemplos de la idea de un concepto central basado en una idea cultural icónica. Jerry Seinfeld compara la creación de cada episodio con una carrera cargando un huevo en una cuchara sobre un terreno irregular y las temporadas con un viaje en submarino donde las provisiones se acaban a medio viaje y hay que recurrir al canibalismo. La realidad violenta del tiempo y los recursos limitados hacen de la creación un campo de batalla. Los cuatro días que tenían para filmar cada episodio generaban una presión en el elenco que terminaba definiendo a los personajes. Un caso famoso es el de Frank Constanza, el papá de George, interpretado por Jerry Stiller. La dificultad para memorizar los diálogos creó la forma peculiar de hablar de Frank, que parece escupir las palabras como si estuvieran trabadas dentro de él antes de salir. El ritmo y tono particulares son resultado de las presiones del tiempo y la mala memoria del actor. La realidad de la producción dándole forma a la ficción es una idea que poco a poco invadiría la mente de Larry David hasta ocuparla por completo. La autorreferencia cobra mucha importancia en las últimas temporadas de Seinfeld, pero es el tema central del siguiente proyecto televisivo de Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm. En Seinfeld la relación con la realidad se ejemplifica claramente en la relación de George con Larry David, donde la sustitución de Larry por un alter ego es esencial para terminar de crear el ícono de los cuatro amigos newyorkinos. En ese sentido, Jerry Seinfeld es la parte icónica del equipo de showrunners, y Larry David, cuyo humor es más específico, necesitaría una resolución mayor y una audiencia más chica para funcionar sin Jerry. Mientras que en Seinfeld la realidad es algo de lo que se destila la imagen cómica, en Curb, que nace como documental, la realidad cruda es la base sobre la que se construye todo. En un episodio de Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jerry Seinfeld interpretándose a si mismo discute con Larry David el casting de un programa de reunión de Seinfeld. Larry está convencido que la esposa de George debe ser interpretada por Cherryl, su ex-esposa, porque ella vivió lo que está en el guión y eso lo haría más realista. A lo que Jerry consternado cuestiona ¿Qué tiene que ver la realidad con lo que hacemos? Estos momentos de Curb me recuerdan a Close-up de Abbas Kiarostami, meta-ficción y recursividad referencial que cuestionan la misma realidad. Sus realismos parecen venir de lugares similares y extrañamente hacerse las mismas preguntas. Y aunque las exploraciones antropológicas no podrían ser de pueblos más opuestos, Beverly Hills y la provincia Iraní, en ambas el realismo parece ser una solución a problemas pragmáticos, una realidad más cruda requiere un presupuesto menor, lo que trae más libertad artística. La autorreferencia alcanza un nivel psicomágico curativo en Curb cuando Michael Richards, Kramer en Seinfeld, interpretándose a sí mismo, tiene un pleito a gritos con un personaje afroamericano frente a una multitud que graba todo en su celular. Este momento toma un episodio muy oscuro de la vida de Michael Richards, cuando durante una rutina de stand-up le gritó la palabra prohibida a un miembro afroamericano de su público que no lo dejaba de interrumpir. Se la gritó varias veces y quedó grabado en un celular, arruinando la carrera post-Seinfeld de Michael Richards hasta que en un acto de limpieza kármica a través de la ficción, Larry David lo invitó a revivir el momento en forma de comedia.

Richards was one of the thousands of lives we continue to remember on this anniversary of September 11. Richards’s work continues to inspire new generations.

Artist Michael Richards was an emerging artist known for his critical sculptural work, exploring the nexus of cultural mythology in the US, especially pertaining to Black history. He was a 1995–96 artist in residence at the Studio Museum, alongside cohort members Richard Lewis and Chakaia Booker—showing in the Museum's exhibitions "Carry Me Home: Artists-In-Residence" (1995–1996) and "Passages: Contemporary Art in Transition" (1999–2000).⠀

At age thirty-eight, he tragically passed away on September 11, 2001, while working in his Lower Manhattan Cultural Council World Views studio located on the ninety-second floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center. One among thousands who we remember on this day, Richards's untimely death was a tragic loss for the New York art world, and the #StudioMuseum in #Harlem in particular.⠀

Now on view at the #BronxMuseum, "Michael Richards: Are You Down?" presents Richards's visionary artworks, exhibiting the sculptures, drawings, installations, and video work he created during a prolific decade between 1990 and 2001. This is the first museum retrospective of Richards's work, curated by Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin.⠀

I believe Michael Richards was one of the first to be canceled. Was it ok what he did? Absolutely not! However, as a society do we ever forgive someone? What about second chances the left preaches about? A “handful” of activists were livid by the situation and the owner “facing outrage” made a rapid decision and banned Richards from The Laugh Factory. What is the standard for being forgiven by the mob? Can it be applied equally and consistently across the board?
