#man in a suitcase #web with four spiders #classic tv #edmund ward #robert tronson #richard bradford #ray mcanally #jacqueline ellis #ralph michael #simon oates #warren stanhope #john savident #lawrence james #edward evans #philip bond #edward rhodes #robert macleod #frank forsyth #david cargill #geoffrey reed #katie fitzroy #tony doonan #douglas jones #perhaps the episode I've remembered least so far‚ the whole thing felt almost new to me. probably i didn't really understand it as a kid; #Ward's plot is unashamedly dense‚ with multiple parties vying for for intelligence and shifting allegiances throughout. watching it now #this is actually a brilliant‚ mature bit of tv: the script is blisteringly sharp‚ with Ward content not to spoofeed the answers and allow #the viewer to connect the dots. dialogue is excellent throughout‚ from a particularly flippant and darkly sarcastic McGill in act 1 through #to a bleakly downbeat wrapup. notably this is perhaps the only episode in which McGill fails his case; he failed to prevent bloodshed in #both 1.15 and 1.21‚ but at least exposed the villains. here his failure is absolute (though not really his own fault) and it's writ large #across Bradford's performance in those final scenes‚ as he quietly fumes and skulks and snarls his few lines. an excellent episode.

i think jonathan's music choice would be accompanied with a brief lecture on how important it is in relation to how much fear and horror it can provide. for a song to be on his "enjoy" list, it has to either be jaunty enough that he can imagine it playing as he goes about his business or just magically creepy enough to evoke a sense of absolute terror when he hums it quietly 💚

Nick Benedict (born Nicholas Joseph Sciurba; July 14, 1946 – July 14, 2023) Television and film actor, perhaps best known for his roles on daytime soap operas.

He made his debut in 1955 in the film Wiretapper as a child. His first performance as an adult was in Mike and the Mermaid at the age of 17. In 1969 he appeared in the Mission Impossible TV series episode, The Vault. He had his first significant role as star-crossed Vietnam veteran Philip Brent on the ABC soap opera All My Children, he would play the role for six years and was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award during his last year on the show. From 1980 to 1981 he played Michael Scott on The Young and the Restless. From 1982 to 1983, he played Ron Washington on Another Life. He appeared on The Dukes of Hazzard, as Frank James, in the seventh-season episode, "Go West, Young Dukes". He played the attorney Michael Fox in the 1985 Tales from the Darkside episode "Madness Room". In 1990 he starred alongside Nancy Allen in the television film Memories of a Murder. He played the role of Curtis Reed in Days of Our Lives on-and-off between 1993 and 2001. In the 1990s he mainly appeared in films aside from his ongoing role in Days of our Lives. (Wikipedia)

Ivan the Terrible, Parts I and II (Sergei Eisenstein, 1945-46) Cast: Nikolay Cherkasov, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Serafima Birman, Mikhail Nazvanov, Mikhail Zharov, Amvrosi Buchma, Mikhail Kuznetsov, Pavel Kadochnikov, Andrei Abrikasov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Vladimir Balashov, Aleksandr Mgebrov, Pavel Massalsky. Screenplay: Sergei Eisenstein. Cinematography: Andrei Moskvin, Eduard Tisse. Production design: Iosif Shpinel, Sergei Eisenstein. Costume design: Leonid Naumov, M. Safonova. Music: Sergei Prokofiev. David Thomson has made a suggestion that a better film epic could be made of the life of Sergei Eisenstein than the one that was made about the life of John Reed -- i.e., Warren Beatty's Reds (1981). In fact, Eisenstein's life was so crowded with artistic and political drama that it would probably have to be an HBO miniseries like Game of Thrones (which is not a bad subtitle for Ivan the Terrible, come to think of it). The drama surrounding Ivan the Terrible alone would be enough for a whole season's episode, with Eisenstein struggling to bring his proposed three-installment film about Stalin's favorite czar to the screen while at the same time dealing with the lethal whims of the dictator himself. After Part I of Ivan the Terrible was released to great acclaim in 1945, including a Stalin Prize from the hands of the man himself, Stalin soured on the project: The mad frenzy of Ivan in Part II cut too close to the bone and it was not released until 1958 -- five years after Stalin's death and ten years after Eisenstein's. Part III had begun filming but was canceled, and what existed of it, except for some stills and scraps, was destroyed. After all this Sturm und Drang, it would be nice to conclude, as some critics have done, that Ivan the Terrible is one of the masterpieces of world cinema. But I can't go that far. It seems to me a great directorial folly, akin to Heaven's Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980) in its directorial excesses, its indulgence in style for style's sake. That the style is immensely entertaining in its artistic wrong-headedness pushes Ivan the Terrible in the direction of camp, a world's fair exhibition of stained-glass attitudes, early silent film poses, great garish sets, costumes that make even the hairiest 16th-century Russians look like drag queens, and in Part II there's a sequence in the most lurid color this side of some of the ballet sequences in MGM musicals of the 1950s. The first time we see Sigismond (Pavel Massalsky), the king of Poland, in Part II, he's sprawled across the throne in a position that almost screams for a sign proclaiming "Careless Decadence,"  and really looks extremely uncomfortable. Ivan's enemy, Archbishop Philip (Andrei Abrikasov), swans about in a billowing cloak that has no known sartorial or clerical necessity, and which allows Ivan (Nikolay Cherkasov) to forestall his exit by simply placing a foot on it. When Philip does manage to leave, the cloak raises a cloud of dust that suggests Ivan needs to liquidate the housekeeping staff. The collection of poses in Ivan the Terrible is balletic and operatic in the worst senses of the words, but the film is also watchable for all those reasons. There are some redeeming values, of course. It's a window into the mind of the Stalinist Soviet Union, both in what it approved and what it banned. It has a distinguished score by Prokofiev, though unfortunately muddied by poor sound reproduction -- in restoring the film, it's too bad that as much attention wasn't paid to providing a new music soundtrack as to cleaning up the images. Visually, it's fascinating, even when the visuals are absurd.

"George Bailey Was Never Born" Has A New Take On "It's A Wonderful Life"

It's a Wonderful life is a Christmas classic. However, when it was released in 1946, It’s a Wonderful Life was not an immediate hit with audiences. In fact, it put director Frank Capra $525,000 in the hole, which left him scrambling to finance his production company’s next picture, State of the Union.

In addition,though it didn’t make much of a dent at the box office, It’s a Wonderful Life found a whole new life on television—particularly when its copyright lapsed in 1974, making it available royalty-free to anyone who wanted to show it for the next 20 years. (Which would explain why it was on television all the time during the holiday season.) The free-for-all ended in 1994.

Now, iHeartPodcasts and Emmy Award-winning producer Kurt Engfehr and 2022 NAACP Image Award Outstanding Podcast nominee Ray Nowosielski have announced the release of “George Bailey Was Never Born,” a one-of-a-kind podcast experience that takes a definitive look at “It’s a Wonderful Life,” one of the most popular holiday movies of all time.

The series is a co-production of iHeartMedia and Double Asterisk, in association with True Stories, created by Engfehr, editor-producer of Oscar- and Palme d’Or-winning documentaries from director Michael Moore, and Nowosielski, producer of “Gumbo Coalition,” which began streaming on Max November 6th, and a story producer on “The Super Models,” streaming on Apple TV since September.

In the story, Joseph returns to narrate the podcast, reprising the character who tells fellow angel Clarence the story of Jimmy Stewart’s George Bailey over the 1947 Frank Capra directed classic.

The podcast features conversations with Stewart's daughter Kelly Stewart Harcourt, co-star Donna Reed's daughter Mary Owen, Capra's grandchildren Frank Capra III and Monica Capra Hodges, original story writer Philip Van Doren Stern’s grandchildren and others, as well as American influencers, artists and real modern small-town corollaries to the characters from the movie.

“George Bailey Was Never Born” details many never-before-told stories, ranging from the failure by Rashida Jones’ grandfather to renew the film's copyright to how Republic managed to regain control of it in 1993, from how the New York Times helped start a popular phenomenon of upside-downing the meaning of “It’s a Wonderful Life” to the abolitionist and anti-fascist intentions behind the movie’s creation, with implications for the MAGA movement today, and much more.

Three episodes take listeners inside the "real" Bedford Falls, Seneca Falls, New York, one spotlighting community banker Menzo Case's efforts to bring affordable housing there through his own Seneca County Habitat For Humanity Bailey Park. Case passed away suddenly of a heart attack on October 13th, leaving that initiative in doubt. Double Asterisk is donating a portion of proceeds to Bailey Park and encouraging listener donations to that, to their local Habitat for Humanity and to AFSP, in honor of the movie's twin causes of affordable homeownership and suicide prevention.
