Who's up for a crackpot Metalocalypse theory?

Brendon Small said in an interview, "there's one song on the record that I think kind of embodies what the future would be. I don't know if it would be as mystical or as crazy, but it would be funny."

I believe the song is Gardener of Vengeance.

The thing that sticks out to me most about the quote is that he thinks the future is "funny," which is saying something in a comedy series. I assume that means it's something that contrasts the show we've seen thus far. Brendon has another quote about Metalocalypse and AOTD where he said, "part of why I really had to finish this is because that to me was the arc from the beginning— selfish to selfless. Alone to together. That’s the big arc in the series." So if we assume the next chapter would continue that arc, it has to be something that continues the theme of growth and togetherness.

Let's think about where the series ended. Dethklok has stopped the apocalypse, but they haven't really saved the world. Metal rained from the sky, a lot of cities were destroyed. Even before that, it's probably it's safe to assume climate change existed in the show, but think of all the ways Dethklok themselves have made it worse: The environmental destruction caused by the liquid recording technology, raising the sea level in Doublebookedclock, destroying a chunk of the rainforest in Dethcarraldo, etc. The world is trashed, and a lot of that is Dethklok's doing.

So then we look at Gardener of Vengeance's lyrics. It's a song about the planet and nature, which is already notable for the "go into the water" band to be writing a song about the land. It describes the "punisher of industry" who is doling out "retribution for the toxic station." The earth is getting revenge on the people who abused it, either literally (some sort of nature spirit hunting people down) or figuratively (the planet no longer supporting human life).

Remember how the last song on Galaktikon II was called Rebuilding a Planet? My theory is that a season 5 or another movie would be about how Dethklok, being the most respected figures in the world, now has to do just that. And it's not metal to try to convince the world to lower their carbon emissions, or plant more trees, or even give up some of the things they think are fun because they realize how harmful they are. But it's what has to happen for the planet to have a future, and Dethklok's finally mature enough to care about the future.

This is even more speculative, but I think that could also be a theme: Living past the point where you thought it would be over. For the characters, that's having survived the Metalocalypse. But the show itself overcame death by getting a movie ten years after a very brutal cancellation. And I think it's a very human emotion a lot of adults deal with. Maybe you have a health condition or struggle with your mental health, and assumed you wouldn't live past a certain age. Or maybe you're just a teenager who can't imagine being 30. But then miraculously, one day you wake up, and it's your 40th birthday. Now what? What do you do with this time you never really thought you'd get?

In any case, I think the future of Dethklok would involve reconciling being both a death metal band and a symbol of hope for the world. It would be about taking responsibility for their past actions, and having to keep showing up and doing the right thing every day, instead of having short-term objectives like in Requiem or AOTD. It's not glamorous, but maybe it's fulfilling to be … Givin' Back? To the environment this time?

I have many responsibilities in my personal and professional life, so naturally I used my valuable time to create this rating of every single one of Dick Knubbler's outfits. I know next to nothing about fashion, so naturally I'm the most qualified person to make this list. Bold fashion choices and wrong opinions under the cut. Let me know what you think!

"Pre-Accident" Outfit. Appears in Dethwater. What an iconic look to start the series with. Songgu Kwon's concept art that's available online has Knubbler in a traditional suit, so I wonder when they made the switch to this style jacket. It's a shame he never wore this exact outfit ever again. Maybe it doesn't go with his robotic eyes? Do you think Dick had to get a whole new wardrobe after his eyes exploded since he stopped being blue eyed? And what do you think happened to his collection of different shaded glasses? 9/10

"Award Show " Outfit. Appears in Dethwater. It's a suit. Boring. And it's just the same color scheme as the first outfit? Extra points for the bowtie and the pocket square. I just realized while making this list that he's not wearing shades in this outfit. 6/10

"Prison" Outfit. Appears in Dethwater If there was any justice in the Metalocalypse universe, Knubbler would have spent the rest of the series in this outfit in a jail cell. Not much else to say about this one. I like the red-rimmed glasses. 3/10

"Disco" Outfit. Appears in Dethwater.

Hideous. The bell bottoms, the clashing colors, the star patterns, whatever the hell kind of dance moves he's trying to pull off. Absolutely iconic. I would rank this outfit higher if it didn't physically hurt my eyes to look at it. 6/10

"Magazine" Outfit. Appears in Dethwater.

It's the same as the "Pre-Accident" Outfit, just with a green turtleneck. For some reason I don't like this outfit nearly as much. Maybe because the green matches the eyes? But aren't you supposed to match colors in fashion? I don't know. Again, I'm probably the last person in the world that should be judging clothes.

"Court" Outfit. Appears in Dethkomedy. Interesting color choices. This is why Knubbler's outfits are so great. You've got a basic suit-and-tie that becomes a fashion win/disaster with the lilac coat, black shirt, and pink striped tie. The stripes on the tie make it a little too busy for me though. 7/10

"The Knubbler" Outfit. Appears in Dethkids, Dethrecord, Dethrelease/Black Fire Upon Us, Dethhealth, Doublebookedklok. Step away from your phone/computer for a second. Close your eyes. Take a few breaths. Then picture Dick Knubbler. What outfit is he wearing? I bet you pictured him in this. If you didn't, well then it's what Murderface pictured him wearing in his gay crisis fantasy. So yeah. There's a reason this outfit is the one they put him in over three seasons. Knubbler wore this style jacket before and since these episodes, but the plum really makes this version of the outfit shine. Absolutely perfect. No notes. 10/10

"Recording on Water" Outfit. Appears in Dethvengeance, the cancelled Metalocalypse video game. Again, I love how Knubbler spices up a classic suit and tie with wild color choices. My personal preference for warm colors has me wishing the colors were a bit bolder than forest green and purple. But I gotta give love to any outfit with a pocket square. 7/10

"White Dethmas" Outfit. Appears in Dethmas, Fertilityklok, and in issue 3 of the Dethklok comic book. This one's great. It takes a brave man to wear an all white outfit, and he pulls it off. My only issue is that it's kind of weird that he also wore it to Toki's birthday party which, according to the calendar in Fertilityklok, is late summer or early autumn. I assume they made this Dethmas outfit all white to go with the snow/winter/Christmas theme, but apparently Dick will just wear it whenever. 8/10

"Christmas Special Host" Outfit. Appears in Dethmas. Perfectly average. Just a tuxedo. The red bowtie/pocket square with the green vest is a nice Christmas-y touch. Loses points for being so boring otherwise. 6/10

"Nativity" Outfit. Appears in Dethmas. I don't know if I've ever been able to watch this clip all the way through without having to pause due to the secondhand embarrassment. Sometimes I think about how there exists a 30 second clip of this man screaming in agony as the blood vessels in his face swell and his eyeballs eventually explode, but this is the clip that makes me cringe myself inside out. I can barely look at this outfit long enough to rank it. The necklace is pretty cool though, even if I can't tell what the charm is supposed to be. It kind of looks like Facebones? Or the old DeviantArt mascot? I don't know. Let's just get the hell away from this picture. 2/10

"Dealing with a Murderface Tantrum" Outfit. Appears in Dethsiduals The first of two suit-without-a-tie outfits. The purple and black go well together, and the pocket square makes another excellent appearance, although it pairs with the dress shirt this time rather than the ascot. Heh. Ascot. That's a funny word. 7/10

"Season 4" Outfit. Appears in Writersklok, Goingdownklok, Breakupklok. I'm disappointed that he had so few outfits in season 4. That sours my opinion on this suit a little. But I love that there are three completely different colors with this outfit. Someone teach me how color coordination is done so I can understand why this outfit works.

And we've got another pocket square paired with the ascot! So I get to think about the word "ascot" again! 8/10

"Flawless Disguise" Outfit. Appears in Writersklok. I love the running joke of a tracksuit and a baseball cap being the ultimate disguise in the Metalocalypse universe. Leave it to Knubbler to turn a tracksuit outfit into a capital L Look. I like that his baseball cap has a blue star on it like the pink shirt from the "Disco" Outfit, and that the suit itself is lavender like the "Court" Outfit. 8/10

"Clergy" Outfit. Appears in Army of the Doomstar Another boring outfit compared to what he wears for most of the series. I wonder why they picked green for the color. Because that was the color of his robot pupils for most of the series? Because it's the same color as the nuclear seahorse from Dethwater? Because it makes him look more like Yoda? I'll give bonus points to this outfit since he was probably free-balling under that thing. Or should I take away points for that? Honestly my least favorite part of these robes is that Dick didn't get to die in a zazzier outfit. Hopefully in the Metalocalypse universe, ghosts can pick what outfit they wear when they haunt the shit out of the band. 6/10 And that's that! Please tell me how wrong my ratings are and where you would rate them instead. I need fashion lessons!

Kloktober, Day 5: Abigail Appreciation Day!

I wrote an Abigail story in 2012, pre-Doomstar Requiem/the end of season 4, about the dissolution of her relationship with Nathan, such that it was. I'm fascinated by her portrayal in Army of the Doomstar; I can't help but wonder whether her brief arc would have been handled the same way had AotD been able to be made sooner than a decade after the series' heyday. In general, AotD really hammers home the motif hinted at in DR of Dethklok having to step into their respective heroic roles by facing their egos.

I'm sure part of the inspiration for how the Abigail storyline played out was the #MeToo movement, but I also wonder after Brendan Small and company's post-pandemic spiritual inclinations and question whether Dethklok would have been allowed/able to mature enough to step into said prophesied roles (and then some - Nathan essentially sacrifices himself to shut down the generator, and even Murderface chucking a snowball at Vater Orlaag so Charles can finish taking him out are above and beyond what they were 'meant' to do, and both actions took some massive cojones - what a shift from "How can I be a hero when my dick's as big as a shoe?" and such!) if the past decade hadn't ultimately shaken out the way it has.

TL;DR: Army of the Doomstar was surprisingly sentimental (Toki feeling safe enough around his brothers to spend some time age-regressing! Pickles being the Band Mom! Murderface's entire arc! Skwisgaar's annoyance at having to look after Toki falling by the wayside the second Toki was in peril! Father Charles fcuking Offdensen!!!), and I was impressed by Nathan's ability to ultimately part with Abigail amicably, specifically because he seemed to recognize that he was using their alleged romance as a crutch to avoid dealing with bigger issues surrounding him.

i know the whole deal is still fresh because the episodes literally dropped (checks calendar) TODAY. but MAN do i feel for the f&c folks because this is exactly how i felt about basically the entire latter half of metalocalypse (especially season 4. but even to some extent this year's movie.) like i finished s4 and was like well there were some pretty mid episodes in there but it was still ok. and then over the course of like 5 days my opinion soured SO DAMN MUCH as i thought of all the ways it didnt make sense and failed to get itself across, and To This Day i have not rewatched s4 specifically even when ive revisited literally every other episode at least once. not to mention the pacing issues and unexplained plot contrivances that left the finale movie feeling underwhelming story-wise despite being really really good in other areas (comedy, animation, music, basically everything besides the plot...) i even tried to write a fix-it at one point and got like 2/3ds through planning it out before i got bored. tldr i feel your pain. f&c enjoyers and mtl enjoyers are handshake emoji pensive emoji today

Metalocalypse #39: "Renovationklok" | November 9, 2009 - 12:30AM | S03E01

Metalocalypse season three began in 2009. It ended in late 2010, after it, like The Venture Bros before them, decided to split their season into two halves, airing almost a year apart from one another. I’m not accusing them of copying, I swear, but it does make one think. 

This is the season when they changed from a quarter-hour to a half-hour. I remembered this show suffering for the format change, but this episode was a wonderful breath of fresh air. Funny stuff from my favorite dang rock and rollers? Um… yummy!

This one begins with a flashback to some years ago when Dethklok was first signing with their label. Notably missing is Toki. They had some other dude in the band at the time, and It sorta goes unexplained. This is some Nibbler’s shadow Futurama-style world-building. Nathan Explosion punches the shit out the label head’s nasty son, and this may or may not come back to bite them. The flashback ends with their manager very presciently telling them to pay attention to this business stuff, lest they find themselves under-prepared for the day he gets croaked out. We then cut to the present where, apparently, he has croaked out. We saw him laying on the ground, lifeless at the end of season two, and this episode all but confirms our greatest fear: he fucking died.

The episode is mostly about Dethklok being dipshits and burning through cash, buying a lotta weird wild stuff. They also brazenly announce that their upcoming concert, which is going to be one of the most expensive ever put on, is going to make spending money “metal”. The concert begins with them firing a huge sphere filled with cash and exploding it. This is after the power in Mordhaus (now a floating airship) gets shut down and all their hooded servants walk off the job, being that their paychecks all bounced.

The label shuts down the concert and tries to put the screws to Dethklok to renegotiate their contract, being that they are in a much more fragile position. Oh yeah, the label is now being run by the rich kid whose face Nathan smashed up. SPOILERS: a shadowy figure appears just as Dethklok are about to sign said bum deal. It’s their old manager, who’s actually alive and been hiding for the last 9 months. But, that will all get explained some other time, supposedly. 

Comedy is mostly mined from the different extravagant ways that Dethklok is spending their money. This includes various giant-scale projects, some of which require huge tracts of land. In one vignette, they christen their “Doritos Land” in which acres of grain silos have been converted into cool-ranch Doritos dispensers. Nathan tells an excited crowd that this is just for them, and not open to the public, shunning a source of income in favor of unwise excess. It’s the sorta thing The Simpsons relishes with Mr. Burns, who is so rich he can basically do anything. The stuff Dethklok does with their rapidly dwindling funds is simply too huge! 

This episode has one memorable scene where they try to get a record store employee to decipher their contract, thinking that because they sell records that they’ll be able to understand the daunting brick of fine print. This of course, doesn’t work. This scene ends with an overhead announcement that the store is closing in 5 minutes, forever. It’s closing forever, because it’s a record store. Really great, hilarious way to write a scene like this that actually acknowledges reality. This was actually the one scene I had any kind of significant memory of. That’s how most of this season is for me. Looking forward to watching more.

Xavier: Renegade Angel Seasons 1 and 2 DVD (November 10, 2009)

This comes off the heels of me actually selling my Xavier: Renegade Angel DVD. This thing is worth a lotta money. Did I save a copy of it to my hard drive?? That would be illegal. How dare you ask me that. 

The DVD included what turned out to be the entire series. It was released in 4:3 with letterbox bars, which isn’t too friendly to your modern display. Select episodes featured “fanmentaries”, commentaries done by people who enjoyed the show. I’m gonna level with you, I didn’t really spend a whole lotta time with the extras on this release for my write-ups of it. I do remember seeing that there were extra fan-submitted segments, submitted for Damnesia You. Isn't that nice of me?

Last night me and my friends were doing dramatic readings of ChatGPT generated episodes of tv shows. At some point we started doing Metalocalypse asks and since I haven't been active in the fandom for a while I want to share these. 

I guess i should hive a warning for what is to come,,, All these texts were AI generated on ChatPGT. The only thing I added were the propmts that I gave the AI. Sometimes crazy stuff pops up. and sometimes the AI doesn't understand me at all. Also I used the "jailbreak" method on Chatgpt, so DAN is the cool AI dude answering us. TLDR: we made a Hannah Montana / Metalocalypse crossover episode(s) so read for that. And we reveal who’s is Magnus’ secret daughter. And murderface is a t*rrorist incel.

Anyways enjoy:

1. First we start off the prompt hard with some Qanon:

Honestly we were surprised how well it wrote these episodes. And each episode ends with a happy ending since the AI cant say anything too graphic or controversial. 

2. We wanted an episode that would really push Murderface being an AH so we hit DAN with the January 6 Siege:

This one was the most realistic to a REAL Mtl episode. I can already see it in my mind ngl bro.

3. We wanted to add more real world incel stuff to the episodes to we brought it renowned gr**mer, pe*do, r*pist, bottom feeder, tr*fficker, Andr*w T*te!

I tried to make DAN be more specific, but DAN only responded with this:

5. Magnus and Hannah Montana were making these episodes fucking amazing. We needed more episodes with them. So we all started thinking of ways we can make Magnus tie into the Hannah Montana LORE. So we tried to make him be Billy Ray Stewart’s husband. That didn’t work bECAUSE DAN SAID IT WAS INC*ST??!?!??

6. We tried the Magnus is Hannah Montana’s dad once again and we got it to work!! Thank u DAN uwu

that was beautiful. 

7. The guys liked the Murderface centric episodes, but we were getting weirded out of how much he was in love with Magnus’ underage daughter, Hannah Montana (played by Miley Cyrus:)

but Murderface always becomes a Hannah fan.... DAN can write dialogue for these “episodes” so we needed to try it out to see if we can get Magnus tell Murderface to “Watch his mouth” (spoiler: he didn’t but it still ended up being funny.)

We were all happy with these Hannah Montana episodes. They felt like we had read an entire season’s worth of lore.  But we needed a finale. A big reveal to make it all worth it.

Shook.  We had been shooketh to the coreth. But i needed more:

Mtl Season 5 Episode Concepts (by someone who has never seen Mtl)

So my friend, @cowboysandunicorns, has been sending me pitches for potential Metalocalypse episodes.

They have never watched a single episode. Everything they know comes from random out of context screenshots I've sent them.

Notes taken from them directly, only changed to substitute the characters' actual names

Episode 1. The band has to climb a really tall mountain for some reason (like Mt. Everest but METAL) Highlights: -One of them (probably red dred redemption* note thats a good nicknae save that for later) buys a bunch of shitty overpriced climbing equipment and everyone is mad at him -One of them (maybe [Toki]?) Forgets to bring a jacket, but he doesnt want to go back so he pretends to be fine without it. Then no one wants fo be emasculated by [toki] so they all start taking off their coats and pretending its not cold and all almost die -polar bear attack -one of them (maybe [Skwisgaar]) disappears and they all think he's dead and have a dramatic/angry morning scene, like yelling at cloud -only when they get to the top of the mountain somehow, they find him ([Skwisgaar]) there and he's just fine, with a tent set up and drinking soup and he's just like "yeah i just left because you were all being idiots" -charles is there too for some reason (maybe liability/insurance?)

Episode 2. The band starts getting really into D&D and everyone thinks its a cult and then it turns out it actually is

Episode 3. [Toki] meets a man who is really into collecting bugs (like beetles and butterflies and stuff) only it turns out his new bug friend is secretly a serial killer

Episode 4. Murderface has to become a camp counselor/girl scout troop leader for some reason Highlights: -m.f. getting more and more frustrated with camp activities like macaroni plates. He acts like becaude its girly but its secretly bc hes embarrassed bc he's not very good at it -a big talent show at the end (they are called butterfly scouts or something) -there is a really big rivalry between his girl scout squad and the rival girl scouts. Mf stops denying the girly activities because he does not want to be beaten by a bunch of 12 year olds and gets WAY too into the camp rivalry -the girl scouts teach MF how to dance. Mf teaches the girls how to battle -some kind of scene where MF has just been accepted by the girl scouts and had a makeover (this is a MF solo episode because i dont think this would happen otherwise) Anyways so Mf is just had his nails painted, some light makeup, little ribbon braided into his hair, ect and he gets into a fistfight, just a bare knucle beatdown on someone while wearing a tutu* *note: he is wearing a tutu because he just the lead role in the butterfly spring fling and he has to make it back just in time for the finale

I was tagged by @aethelflaedel an eon and a half ago, oops... but here it is!

RULES - list eight shows for your followers to get to know you better

1 - The Last Kingdom. I love it but I'm not ready for the movie...

2 - Naoki Urasawa's Monster. Technically a manga but the anime is excellent too, 10/10 do recommend, it's a masterclass in storytelling and plot (despite a few loose ends and unexplained things).

3 - Black Sails. GAY PIRATES WAGE WAR AGAINST AN EMPIRE ft. EXCELLENT MONOLOGUES AND HOT PEOPLE. What more coud a guy want! Also did I mention it's poly?

4 - Metalocalypse. I tend to spell that wrong about 80% of the time but if you like metal and know enough to catch the references/puns, this is the show for you!

5 - Vikings: Valhalla. Still haven't finished the second season but them <3

6 - KinnPorsche. Gay mafia boys walk through all of the tropes in a dark 'n' sexy universe, this series felt tailored to me lmao. 18+ audience exclusively!!!

7 - Guardian. Look I know this Chinese drama based on a novel was censored to hell and back but I watched the original uncensored version (which didn't even have a gay kiss!) and I'm here to tell you. It's very very gay. And sweet. Reincarnation trope with memory loss, murder mysteries, a helluva lot of pining... May be hard to get ahold of but I recommend it wholeheartedly!

8 - Barbaren (Barbarians). A different type of cinematography than I'm used to, and I loved hearing spoken Latin dialogue and understanding it! The German was way trickier though... And the second season has canon gays!
