Artist: eyecicles For: niatsuki Prompt: Near in a nice suit Artist’s notes: I adore Near and I love suits, so I was very excited about drawing this prompt. It was surprisingly difficult to come up with a design for his suit, because I wanted it to look nice but not too complicated & also like something he could actually wear. But I still had a lot of fun with it~

New Looks
Author: Rachel ( @cybirdpunk ) For: @yagami-raito-kun Pairings/Characters: Sayu, Light, implied Lawlight and Remisa Rating/Warnings: None Prompt: Light and Sayu doing cute, sibling-ish activities Author’s notes: Thanks for giving me such a great prompt to work with! I had a ton of fun writing this, and I really hope you enjoy it! Happy Holidays!
“Hurry up, big brother!”
“Yeah, yeah…”
Sayu stopped short at the entrance to the mall, waving back at Light who was still lagging a good pace behind her. He always dragged his feet when she forced him to come along on a trip to the mall, but she knew it was mostly an act to mess with her. He was so much easier to read than he thought he was.
Once he finally caught up, she grabbed his hand and pulled him inside. As always, clothes shopping came first. The instant the two of them entered the store, Sayu gasped as she noticed a nearby banner.
“Look, Light! They’ve got that new Misa-Misa collection!” Sayu exclaimed, staring at the beautiful smiling blonde girl on a banner advertising a new arrival discount. “We have to start there. Her look is, like, the biggest thing ever right now.”
“Whose look?” Light asked, not even looking at the banner. He seemed more interested in a sale on plain white shirts. Honestly, how boring could he possibly get?
“Misa-Misa, duh! Do you seriously not know who she is?” She tugged at his arm again and he finally turned to see the banner, looking utterly unimpressed. Undaunted, Sayu continued. “She’s the most popular model in Japan right now. Gothic lolita was pretty much dead before she came onto the scene and single-handedly brought it back. She’s just the best.”
She chose to leave out the fact that she had a massive crush on her. There’s no way Light wouldn’t tell Dad. He always told him everything.
“Huh. That’s interesting,” said Light in the most uninterested voice he could muster. He was teasing her again. She mock-pouted and punched him in the shoulder.
“I’m sure she’s got men’s stuff in there, Light. Maybe you could consider trying a look that doesn’t scream ‘I work in a cubicle’ for once in your life.” She rubbed her chin and looked him up and down, picturing potential looks. “What if you wore, like…a leather jacket? With spikes? Add in a little eyeliner?” She grabbed a pair of black pre-ripped jeans off a nearby display and held them up in his face. “These would make it look like you went out and did cool stuff instead of sitting in your room and studying all day.”
Light stared at the pants with a look of genuine distress. “Sayu, please tell me those holes aren’t an intentional part of the design.”
“Yup! Isn’t it cool?”
“There’s nothing ‘cool’ about being wasteful,” he replied, taking the jeans and placing them back on the display. “Those could have been a perfectly functional pair of jeans before someone ruined them.”
“You’re no fun at alllllllllllll,” Sayu groaned, moving to the next display. “Look at this, Light! The newest Cosme Misa line is out. Misa-Misa always has the best makeup.” She picked up a tube and held it out to him, rolling it up to reveal a deep purple hue. “I saw her talk about this one in an interview. She said it was her girlfriend’s favorite color in the entire line!”
“Girlfriend?” Light asked, raising his eyebrows as he looked down at the lipstick. “I didn’t realize people could be so open about that now.”
Sayu felt her heart sink. She knew Light was old-fashioned, but did he seriously have a problem with that? “Why?” she asked, putting the lipstick down and absentmindedly grabbing some eyeliner. “Is that bad or something?”
Light’s eyes widened and he quickly averted his gaze, crossing his arms awkwardly. “No! Of course not. I don’t have any problem with that. I mean, obviously I of all people wouldn’t have a problem with it.”
“Why you of all people?”
Light turned away from her, suddenly very interested in a nearby display showing thigh-high striped socks. “No reason. It’s just a figure of speech. I’m sure you’ve heard it before.” He yanked a pair off the rack, looking them over.
Sayu peered over his shoulder and smirked. “Thigh-highs, Light? I didn’t think that was your style.” She figured that would just make him madder, but he seemed to calm down now that they were moving away from the topic.
“Of course they aren’t. But there’s somebody I’ve been trying to get to wear socks for quite some time now. I’m wondering if maybe these are unique enough to get them to consider it.”
“They don’t wear socks? They sound gross.” She groaned, turning back to the makeup. “You have weird friends.” Finally settling on a cute bubblegum pink lip gloss and some new mascara, she grabbed some black eyeliner and handed it to Light. “I still think you should try some of this. Boys can wear makeup too, y'know.”
Light looked at the eyeliner like it was some sort of alien artifact. “What is this?”
“It’s eyeliner, duh. You put it on around your eyes and it adds some color to them. Right now it’s in style to put a looooooooot on, but I just like to use it to make my eyes pop a bit.”
To Sayu’s surprise, Light didn’t immediately put it back. “Color around the eyes…men can wear it…” Suddenly, his eyes bugged open and he looked at her like he’d just had an earth-shattering revelation. “I knew it.”
“Knew what?”
“Nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
“You’re so weird,” she chuckled. Grabbing a basket for each of them, she threw in her makeup and a pair of thigh-highs. She moved deeper into the store, letting Light slip away to the men’s section as she perused some new skirt designs. As much of a nerd as Light might be sometimes, she really did enjoy shopping with her brother. He was always so busy, so any time the two of them got to spend together was time she valued above nearly anything else. And he might never admit it, but she knew he valued it too.
After filling her basket to the brim, Sayu managed to track Light down as he looked through some admittedly sleek turtlenecks. “Looks like my sense of fashion might finally be rubbing off on you!” she called, making him jump. “You should get the black one. Black works for you.”
“You think so?”
“Trust the expert, Light. Whoever you’re trying to change up your look for is going to appreciate you playing to your strengths.”
She smirked as she saw Light’s face redden slightly. “I’m not buying this for anyone else. I’m just trying something new. That’s what you wanted, isn’t it?” Quickly stuffing the turtleneck into his basket, he motioned toward the register. “Did you have anything else you wanted to get, or are we done?”
Sayu grinned and held up a basket filled with a wide array of new Misa-Misa brand apparel. “I think I’ve got enough to make the other kids at school jealous.” She let out a small sigh. “It’s not like I can make them jealous with my grades the way you can.”
“You know I’m always happy to tutor you, Sayu.” Light said as they headed towards the register. “Maybe I can show you that there’s an actual point to diligent studying beyond being a 'nerd’, as you put it.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” she giggled as they entered the line. After a few minutes of waiting, they arrived at the register. Light put up his basket first, brimming with white shirts and cheap jeans. Then, for some reason, he reached out to grab hers as well.
“Wait, what are you doing?” she asked.
“You helped me pick out something stylish. It’s the least I can do to cover your expenses as well.” Sayu blinked a few times in surprise as Light gave her an almost unnaturally genuine smile. “I can be a good big brother every now and then, you know.”
Without thinking, Sayu threw her arms around him. “You’re the best, Light.”
“I don’t know if I’d go that far.” he chuckled as he turned to pay for their clothes. He didn’t realize how serious Sayu was. She usually kept it inside, but she really did think the world of him. He was a way better brother than he thought he was.
As they stepped out of the store, Sayu could feel her stomach start to grumble. “Hey Light, can we hit the food court next?”
“I suppose a little something to eat would be good right now.”
“Yay!” she cheered, beaming at him. “You have to try the new pizza place that just opened up. It’s to die for.”
“Sounds good, Sayu. Lead the way.”
“Are you going to treat me again?”
“Don’t push it.”

Eat of Knowledge
Author: kiranatrix/ZombieJesus For: my-doodles-xd Pairings/Characters: Light and L, Lawlight  Rating/Warnings: Gen/none  Prompt: Lawlight on a date in a pastry shop Author’s notes: This was an interpretation of your prompt, set during YotsubaArc. I imagined a conversation they might have had during that time that was perhaps as close to a date over pastry they might have gotten then. I’m sorry if you wanted pure fluff. I hope you enjoy it.
It was the middle of the night when Light felt a tug of the handcuff chain, jerking him from troubled dreams and back to his more troubled reality. The room was cold, and he could hear the droning of hard rain outside, the muffled swish of city traffic far below their tower. “Ryuzaki?” Light lifted his head from the pillow, looking around the room but not seeing L right away. He knew the detective rarely slept, would type long into the night or just sit beside him, fingers hovering above keys in thought. But not tonight.
His gaze followed the long handcuff chain to the open window where it kinked on the edge, trailing to the narrow ledge outside their room. The sounds of the storm grew louder as Light gravitated towards the window that had always been locked until this night, and he frowned as he stepped in the puddle accumulating on the floor as rain was occasionally blown inside. “Ryuzaki?!”
A gust of wind chilled him but he went to look out the window anyway, clutching his arms and warming them as he peered around the ledge. “What in the hell are you doing out here? It’s dangerous!” L was sitting just outside the window, perched like a gargoyle over the city beneath them. He was soaked and shivering slightly, but seemed relaxed, peaceful to Light.
“Thinking.” L turned his wide grey eyes to Light for a moment, taking in the displeasure on his face. He placed his hands on his knees, gazing out over the neon city again.
Light looked down just for a moment, long enough to feel slightly dizzy from the height. “Come back in here, you’ll fall!”
“Is Light-kun worried I’ll topple off and drag him down too?” L leaned back against the wall, scooting his toes to the edge and curling them around it. “I assure you I won’t.” Quieter, “Not yet anyway.”
Light frowned at L’s tone, squinting as some rain blew into his face. “What do you mean ‘not yet?’”
“Kira may be the end of me, but not tonight.” L patted the soggy concrete beside him and indicated for L to join him. When Light gave him a dubious look, L smiled cryptically. “Are you afraid?”
“No…” It was partially true, Light was not afraid of heights. But it had only been a week since he’d been let out of his cell and his trust in the detective was badly frayed. Most days it seemed that his freedom (such as it was) was paid for with his father’s sanity, exchanged for his own peace of mind that he’d ever get out of this trap. L had shown him that he’d do anything to prove Light was Kira, and stepping onto a ledge with someone like that was unwise to say the least. So why am I doing it? He sighed and carefully climbed out the window, gripping the sill tightly until he had sat down beside L. I’m not afraid of you. “Happy? Now will you come back inside?” Light leaned back against the wall, wishing now he’d worn warmer pajamas tonight.
L ignored him, pointing to a small shop below them on the street in front of the skyscraper. “Look. A new pastry shop opened up yesterday.” The storefront had blinking neon signs of cupcakes and pies in the windows, but the interior was dark since it was late at night.
Light focused through the sheets of rain, shaking his head and unable to hold back a snort of laughter. “Is this why you refuse to fall off the ledge? Got to live long enough to see if those new pastries are any good?”
“It’s as good a reason as any. I do hope that Kira will hold off killing me long enough to find out.” L’s voice was deadpan as usual, dry and emotionless.
“I’m not–” Light closed his eyes in frustration, the protest dying in his mouth. Too much to hope to have just one friendly conversation. “I’m going back inside. You should too.” He made a move towards the window, but stopped when he felt a bony hand on his leg, looking at L in surprise.
“A moment more.” L’s wet hair hung in his face, dripping like dirty icicles thawing at last. “Please.”
Light carefully sat back down, staring at the pale hand on his knee that was slowly retracted. He listened to the rain for a few minutes as they sat in silence, until he broke it. “Have you always loved sugar so much?”
L shrugged, supposing he had since he couldn’t recall the start of it. “People cope with stress in different ways. It seemed the lesser of many evils.”
Light brushed his fingers over a small crack in the concrete. “But that’s not how L usually looks at the world is it? Choosing the lesser of evils. Even the lesser evil may destroy, given enough time and opportunity.”
L looked at him sharply, nibbling a finger. Ah, that is something he would say. Does Kira believe himself the lesser evil? “Then I will have nothing but my own weakness to blame if it happens. But sweets make me happy, and I have little enough of that as it is.”
Nails dug into the crack, probing deeper. “Doesn’t solving cases, being L make you happy? The whole world reveres L, respects and admires him.” Light blushed slightly, turning his face to the clouds, because despite his anger towards L, he still admired him greatly. “That would be like a dream to me. Being able to change the world for good, solve crimes no one else could do. Like a superhero.” He laughed at the naive folly of it, seeing what L had done, what he really cared for now. Winning. “I used to want to be you.”
“Used to?” You could have been, in another life.
“Well, if you say it doesn’t make you happy, that’s not exactly a glowing endorsement is it? And I’d….I’d do things differently if I were L.”
L gave a rare laugh at that. “Yes, I imagine you would.” Maybe you would have been a better L, if my power and not Kira’s had been yours.
Light could sense something sad under the irony and even though he was L’s captive, it made him uneasy. “Well, we can go to that shop tomorrow if you want to.” Take what makes you happy, if that’s all that can.
“No, we can’t be seen in the handcuffs, you know that.”
“No, I suppose not.” Light closed his eyes, wondering what it would take for these cuffs to ever come off. Nothing could satisfy you until you prove me Kira, and then you’ll put a rope around my neck in its place. ”What would you order if you could have anything?”
Without hesitation, and slightly dreamy. “Cake. Strawberry. With loads of buttery icing.”
It sounded just like what L had every day. “Don’t you get plenty of that here? Watari bakes it all the time for you.”
“But this would be new cake. Watari tries to make my cakes healthier and thinks I don’t notice.” L made a face, thinking of margarine and wheat flour and other sneaky substitutes Watari made with his health in mind.
“But you do.”
“Of course.”
Light giggled with the sorts of troubles that weighed so heavy on L’s mind. “I see. So if you asked him to go get one from the shop, he’d probably replace it with a healthier cake.”
Grumbling, “Probably.”
It all sounded very sensible to Light, given how inconvenient it would be if L died of diabetes or a natural heart attack that could have been prevented. “Does Ryuzaki always want what’s bad for him?”
“Not always.” He sighed, “Although it has been occurring more frequently lately.” And with far more potentially lethal consequences.
Light gave him a conspiratorial smile. “I bet I could get you that cake—unadulterated.” Would it make you happy if I did? Would you smile for me? A real one, without your doubts and accusations?
L tilted his head, pressing a finger to his bottom lip. “Has Kira resorted to catering in an attempt to free himself? I’m afraid it won’t work despite my weakness for sugar. Plus he may poison it.”
Light’s own smile fell immediately, washing to the gutters below and drowning in the rain with the moment. Colder now, “Not quite his style is it? Poison is a coward’s tool.”
“And Light-kun does not believe Kira to be a coward then…” Then why do you hide from me?
“He is many things, but no. He’s not that.”
“I agree.” The same reason I hide. He doesn’t want to die.
Light gave him an odd look, perplexed. “You know sometimes I can’t decide if you admire him or want him dead.”
“Both. And neither.” Which is it? He searched Light’s face, his eyes, a critic tasked with detecting the forgery and exposing it, yet finding beauty in the facsimile. “Depends.” Not a forgery, but painted over to hide what lies beneath. An unsettling scene but true, now covered in brushstroked innocence to enhance appeal.
The rain had nearly stopped now, just drizzling in afterthought. “Depends on what?”
L looked down at his wriggling toes, alive like entirely seperate things with minds of their own. And which do I prefer…“I think I’m ready to go back inside.” He motioned for Light to go in, and followed him through the window when he did.
Light closed the window and stood there shivering as L unlocked their handcuffs momentarily for them to change into dry clothes. He pulled them on, then held his wrist back out for the familiar snap of metal. Heading under the covers for warmth, he was slightly surprised when L joined him. Have you had enough of the cold as well? “What did you go out there to think about anyway? You never said.” The cold follows us.
L hesitated, looking as if he’d just turn over and ignore the question. But he spoke, a little smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Whether a fake cake will ever make me happy.”
Light looked back at him from his pillow. We aren’t talking about cakes are we. “And what did you decide?”
L did turn over then, gathering the blanket around him until only his spiked hair stuck out. “It won’t.”

Nowhere To Run
Author: @complicatedmerary For: @yeggami Pairings/Characters: LightxB (alluding to it) Light Yagami, Beyond Birthday, and a Wammy cameo Rating/Warnings: T, language, severe psychological torture, and physical violence Prompt: Something angsty with Light x B Author’s notes: On the one hand, I don’t like seeing Light suffer. But, on the other hand, I wanted to explore a follow up to another fic I already made, Running Out of Time. Whatever happened to Light? That question will be answered soon.
Quiet.
There was nothing but silence. It was eerie, not even the sound of breathing could be heard. Light Yagami didn’t dare move, the anticipation on why he was tied on a chair was perplexing to him and destroying the tension might cost him his sanity.
How exactly did he get here? All Light could remember was a hit on the head so severe that it blacked out his recollection of the past hour.
What Light Yagami did not know was that the injury in question occurred the previous week from today. It was all coming in a flash; Beyond Birthday told him that the only way one could get out this prison was to dig a hole under an unsupervised location. What all the prisoners knew, except for Light Yagami, were the consequences of such an assertive act: If you attempt to breathe in the rich soil as you dig your way out, the powerful fumes will kill you instantly and no one will mourn you as you are forever forgotten in the system. Beyond Birthday was counting on getting rid of L’s shiny new enemy for his own amusement.
Fortunately for Light Yagami, a guardian angel in the shape of a broad-shouldered criminal overheard Beyond Birthday’s instructions to Light Yagami, already prepared to save him from such terrible fate. He followed Light until he was feet away from the location and knocked him so hard on the head that he immediately passed out. The following morning, the criminal alerted the guards about Beyond Birthday’s intentions.
The guards dealt with him accordingly: Bring him to L.
After what seemed like minutes, Light Yagami remembered what happened and a hot fury traveled through him like lightening. L, it was all about L. No matter where he went, his presence disturbed him tremendously. He might not be face-to-face with him, but Beyond Birthday was the closest annoyance he could imagine. That smug smile, his inability to accept his mistakes, and his physical violence were so reminiscent of L that he wanted to hunt both of them and kill them with a Death Note. Too bad he was stripped off that power not too soon after he was captured and brought sadness within Light. However, something was still not right: Where did Beyond Birthday get his Shinigami Eyes if he lacked a Death Note? Unless Ryuk tricked him, shouldn’t The Eyes be removed once you give up the Death Note? Not like he wanted to know anyway; if he saw Beyond Birthday’s face one more time, he wouldn’t if know if he could stop himself from ripping off the hair that was left from Beyond’s head and break his ribs.
~
Meanwhile, in Beyond Birthday’s highly secured cell.
“You are fucking with me, right, Wammy?” Beyond Birthday hissed. “I did nothing wrong, why is L so upset if he hates Light Yagami anyway? He should be happy that we have more in common than originally thought.”
Beyond was in a terrible shape; his injuries from his fight with Light Yagami were still glaringly present and L being the sadist that he was, continued to refuse giving him medical care. First the untreated burns and now a broken face. Fantastic, truly fantastic, Beyond thought sardonically. I’ll never get away from him, he continues to torture me until I can no longer take it. Well, boo-hoo, how about you take me like a real man and stop hiding for once?
After his taunt, Quillsh Wammy administered an electric shock connected to Beyond’s arm, causing him to whimper like a child.
“Still not speaking to me, huh?” Beyond said after he recovered. “You can physically abuse me all you want, I couldn’t care less about you. You and L still ruined mine and A’s life without any remorse. None of you deserve any respect. I ought to kil—AAAAAH, AAAAH, AAAAAAAAAH!”
Wammy administered electric shock before he could finish. “I want to say sorry, but I’m not. At the end of the day, you wanted to be noticed by your death and destruction. You got what you wanted and it is disgusting that you are not willing to accept the consequences. Light Yagami was scheduled for execution; it was not your calling to be the one to do it.”
“He was going to die anyway!” Beyond insisted on proving himself on the right. “You mean to tell me this was an ego thing? How typical, I shouldn’t be surprised. Where is “Mr. Perfect” by the way? I didn’t get the chance to thank him properly for finally giving me chance to escape that hell-hole.”
“Oh, you’ll see him soon,” Wammy said nonchalantly. “I doubt he would be happy about it, but you’ll learn to coexist with each other.”
Beyond raised an eyebrow. “So he is here. Great, can’t wait for the exhilarating reunion.”
~
Light Yagami wanted this torture to end. As two guards dragged him to another room in handcuffs, he already feared the worst. The word “execution” shone brightly in his brain and, if he were honest with himself, that did not sound terrible anymore. Anything to be away from L’s torture.
They opened the door and he received the reminder of that night. Beyond Birthday looked more putrid than ever and if he were to stand closer, he would probably smell the lack of hygiene from rotting away in prison. Beyond had the audacity to blow a kiss at him and he couldn’t take it anymore; he launched himself on top of Beyond and hit his face with the handcuff’s metal surface. Beyond did not fight back; he was too amused to care.
“Enough,” Wammy did not raise his voice, but the sharpness was enough to make them stop. “Whether you like it or not, you are stuck with each other until one of you dies.” It didn’t take a genius to figure out who he meant. “Obviously putting Light Yagami in the same cell as Beyond Birthday was a terrible idea, so the rules have change. You do not longer have any liberties; no more prisoners to interact with and certainly no way out. You are not going to starve or be neglected of your basic human needs. Consider that a blessing, but don’t get too comfortable. From now on, you are highly supervised.”
Light was shocked by Wammy’s harsh nature. He remembered him as someone who was professional yet reserved. He almost reminded him of—No.
Was L speaking for him? By any chance, was he watching him right now? That could explain the surveillance camera, but he did not have a proper explanation on why Wammy was like this.
“I hope you gentlemen have no questions,” Wammy returned to his calm nature. “You’ll be inspected first thing in the morning for security purposes. Have a good night.”
~
Light couldn’t sleep, his paranoia was amplified by that patronizing surveillance camera; he felt mocked and distraught, there truly was no escape.
“You are boring me tonight, Yagami,” Without any warning at all, Beyond slid himself in Light’s bed. “Where is your flaming nature? You were so spicy when we met, now you are soft.”
Light felt sick; would it kill the guy to at least take one shower? “Go back to your bed, it is a single for a reason.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Beyond rolled his eyes. “I can’t sleep either. Isn’t it sad that even though your execution is coming, your numbers have not budged one bit?”
He had to ignore him, it was certainly one of his other tricks. “Not that I’m following for it, but why do you think that is?”
“Maybe you don’t get to die just yet.” Beyond raised one finger near his mouth. “I can’t one reason why, he clearly hates your guts.”
“Really? I never noticed.” Light said sardonically.
“Aw, the spiciness is back,” Beyond purred against him. “Now the real fun can begin.”
“What are you talking about?” Light said, alarmed.
“Relax, pretty boy, it’s not what you think. I have a plan.”
“Oh, an escape plan? I certainly never heard one of those!”
“Okay, now you are being annoying,” Beyond forced Light to look at him, never mind the fact that he looked like wanted to throw up. “Listen, this one is special because we both lived happily ever after.” He whispered. “I can’t tell you all of it because I know L is watching. I noticed the camera, I’m not a fool. All I know for sure is that you have to pretend to like me.”
“Trust me, Beyond, I would rather kill you.”
“That’s the spirit,” Beyond grinned. “Once you get to truly know me, that feeling gets more intense. Hatred can turn into passion, please work on it.”
“I’m going have to ask you to go back to your bed, goodnight, Beyond.” Light attempted to push him off.
Beyond resisted. “You are not being reasonable. If L sees us getting along, it would throw him off his balance. It would be too suspicious and he would have no choice but to talk to us personally. That would be our chance to escape. We get out, you’ll be the Bonnie to my Clyde, and we live happily ever after.”
Light frowned. “Bonnie?”
Beyond took his hand in between his. “Think about it, sleep on it. You don’t have to agree, but you have to at least have the same lust as I do to defeat L once and for all. I want out, I can’t take his abuse anymore. Anyway,” Beyond kissed Light’s hand. “Goodnight, I wish you good luck on inspection day.” And with that, Beyond left Light alone.
It sounded tempting, but there was no way in hell he would let Beyond get too far with this. He still wanted his dignity back.

Ghosts in Our Past
Tumblr media
Author: @sstwins For: @almostsane-things Pairings/Characters: Mello, Matt is mentioned Rating/Warnings: This is like… high PG-13. I don’t think any of it is self-harm but there is definitely self-hatred, some cursing, and mentions of prostitution. Prompt: Mello w the prompt ‘Ghosts in our past’ (feel free to incorporate personal headcanons) Author’s notes: I entirely could not communicate the depths of my Mello headcanons into my fanart, so that’s why this happened ahaha. I have a lot of very complex Mello feelings.
Mello’s eyes slowly blinked open, and the immediate wave of pain that hit him, threatening to leave him breathless, made him wish that he could fall back into the blissful oblivion of sleep. He’d been having some sort of dream, but the disorienting aching coming from where the left side of his head lay on the pillow had jarred him roughly back into reality, with whatever dreams he’d had quickly fleeing. He must have gotten fucked up last night, the bleary thought drifted across his mind, in order to have a headache this bad. But with his new awakened state came the uncomfortably scratchy feeling of something digging into his skin below just his temples, snaking down his neck onto his shoulders until Mello sat up with a gasp, clawing at the bandages that he was sure were the source of the pain.
Oh. His breathing took a second to calm as he took in his surroundings. The rancid smell coming up from pizza boxes tossed into the corners and forgotten. Halfway hanging-on curtains dangled over the window frame, diffusing the light that came into the hovel and turning day into night. This wasn’t some crummy hotel after a one-night stand to get some quick cash, and the pain wasn’t just a bad hangover. He was in Matt’s apartment. He was in Matt’s apartment when a week ago he’d expected to be dead, after the explosions didn’t go off as planned and the building threatened to take him down along with it. Then Matt had swooped in, always the knight in shining goggles, and had whisked him away to this shitty apartment. The way he told the story, Mello had been frantic with joy and gratuitous thank you’s upon being rescued, but all that Mello remembered was waking up a day or so after the explosion, head pounding like he’d gotten concussed, and rolling over to see Matt lying next to him in bed as if they’d never been apart.
As if triggered by the memory of the event, Mello’s left side gave a powerful twitch, causing him to clench his teeth. A mirror. He had to get to a mirror. Fumbling his way out of bed, Mello staggered across the floor, nearly tripping over several discarded game consoles. Fuck, Matt was messy. He was worse than Mello was, and that was saying a lot.
The door to the bathroom was right next to the pocket-sized kitchen. The entire space was hardly livable even for one person, Mello noted as he slammed himself into the tiny square washroom, clicking the door firmly shut behind him before he even dared to think about turning towards the mirror. Matt had done some googling, told him it would heal, but he was far from being a certified doctor. Taking in a deep breath to stop his staggering gasps, Mello steeled his nerve and turned towards the glass, his heart sinking at the sight.
Matt’s shitty gauze wrapping had done little to cover up the absolute mess of charred flesh spread from Mello’s cheekbone to shoulder. Angry red inflammation bubbled around the edges of the fabric wrapping him up tight. In some places, blood had soaked through the wrappings, marring the perfect cream color with a sickening shade of salmon. Mello let his gaze travel down his body almost peacefully, holding everything back while he tried to take in a calming breath. But instead of oxygen flowing in, he felt the all-too-familiar sense of rage flaming up and burning though him. His hands acted on their own, scrabbling at his bandages and tearing them off, wishing that he could tear off the skin that lay underneath. When the final shreds of gauze were fluttering to the floor like feathers, Mello collapsed onto the toilet seat and, not for the first time that week, let out a choked sob that he couldn’t quite keep in.
He didn’t deserve this, did he? After all the shit he’d put up with for years, first with Near and then out on his own, without a penny from Wammy’s. Oh no, they’d poured the inheritance into their precious little prodigy, but Mello was smart and resourceful and girlish enough with his slender frame and wispy blonde hair. Prostituting himself back then had been an easy way to gain money, secrets, and from that, power. All he had to do was bat his eyes and act coy, and they would give him whatever he wanted. Members of the mafia, members of the government. Mello had grabbed onto all of their dirty little secrets and used that to climb to the top. And along with that, he’d learned to value himself not just for his brilliant mind, but also for his pretty face. After all, no one was paying for a hotel to hear him debate them about Plato. His intelligence was what allowed him to plan his rise to glory, but his beauty was the commodity that let him get there.
And all of that was gone now. He’d blown up the only place where he had any influence beyond being a good fuck. But that second bit wasn’t true now either, no. No one wanted a scarred-up whore, especially not one who looked as bad as Mello. This wasn’t just a cute little scratch or beauty mark. It was the kind where one look at his face made his stomach plummet until he felt like retching. It was horrific. Ugly.
And burning, still. Mello pulled himself out of his stupor to drop to his knees and dig around in Matt’s cabinets, looking for ointment, burn cream… anything to stop the pain. There were little bottles and tubes down there, but with his eyes blurred with tears he couldn’t read them to see which was what Matt usually put on. Bitterly, Mello swiped his arm across his eyes, frustrated as the tears didn’t stop from his application of force. Was this what his life was going to be now? Sprawled naked across the floor of Matt’s hovel’s tiny bathroom, not even able to take care of himself much less do anything to stop Kira. L would think he was pathetic. L would be ashamed of him. Not that he hadn’t always been. Mello had always been the bastard successor. Not the one who was the most desirable. He knew that, because if Near had threatened to strike out on his own, they never would have let him go. You keep precious things close to your chest, but Mello was a breakable commodity, not even really needed. He was the backup. Always number two, and now the only things he had managed to scrape up on his own were gone.
Eyes still completely glassed over, Mello fought against the stinging tears with another wracking fit of anger. His fingers twisted and scratched at his burned skin, striking out against himself, delighting momentarily in the way that the fragile regrowth of his flesh tore easily, causing blood to drain down his arm. But then the pain set in a hundredfold and he slammed his head back into the unforgiving wood of the bathroom door, reveling in the way that it made him see stars and momentarily took his other pain away. If it wasn’t for Matt, he didn’t think he could stand any of it. He wanted to drown himself in the bathtub or overdose on the pain pills that were so temptingly only a few inches away, but he couldn’t. Matt had come for him, saved him. Left him alone all day while he got cash under the impression that Mello wouldn’t do anything stupid.
Mello let his head rest against the door as he took in deep breaths until the hot tears subsided, replaced with an unsettling sense of forced calm. He was thinking and feeling too much. If he let it all out, it would destroy him entirely. Mello knew better than anyone about the explosive power of anger. Better to bottle it up and release it in small doses, a bit for every time he looked in the mirror until maybe one day he could handle the image in the glass without heaving.
Next to the painkillers in the cabinet was a fresh roll of gauze. Mello took a glance down at his bloody arm, reached for the bandages, and numbly started wrapping his skin back up. Maybe there was something to be said about the devil you couldn’t see. You could pretend it just didn’t exist.

Concrete Box
Author: @silcnt-scul For: @queer-of-the-blue-moon Pairings/Characters: Light Yagami, (implied) L Lawliet Rating/Warnings: Claustrophobia tw Prompt: AU where Light actually feels guilty when he’s almost done with eliminating L, and overwhelmed, he hesitates which ruins his plans (but maybe it’s better this way). Author’s notes: tbh I had no idea what I was doing with this, but it was kinda fun actually even tho I’ve never written this kind of stuff before.
In the end, it had been his own guilt that brought him down.
The concrete walls seemed to be more suffocating than usual today, an occurrence Light would have thought impossible – but once he had also deemed impossible his downfall, and being locked into a light-grey hell filled with bright lights, with no windows, no clocks, no way to communicate to the outside world besides the camera which looked at him, unblinking, unswaying – every now and then, someone would speak – L, he thought – but never converse – only unfeeling voice, announcing whatever it deemed necessary for Light to know.
His own garden of Eden, where he was safe – contained within a concrete box, with everything necessary for him to stay alive. A lumpy bed with a thin blanket and pillow, a toilet and a shower, a sink where he could drink water(but the water was always room temperature, unpleasantly warm), and a tiny chute in the wall from which arrived his food thrice per day, guarded by a watchful eye… when Light had first thought of this, he had laughed, laughed hysterically for what felt like hours, before slumping down against a wall with a heavy sigh. At least Adam and Eve had gotten out by committing a sin – but there was no Tree of Knowledge here, no snake to tempt him. Only L, watching him through the camera, perhaps saying a word or a few if he deemed Light worthy enough – the only luxury the detective had allowed for him was the fact that the lights darkened somewhat a while after the third meal after Light’s waking, which let the ex-god sleep for a bit.
Oh, how he wished he had never waited to kill L – a day of hesitation had brought Light here, an overwhelming wave of guilt that had stripped him of control over himself and made him wait with killing L, make excuses – let him live just for a longer, he is an interesting person, he might be useful in my plans – and these human-like feelings had taken his hope to see the outside world, taken his life from him, leaving his body to live in this prison – oh, he had tried to get out alright, perhaps in the most foolish possible way – scraping and hitting at the walls - but the chamber had filled with a thick vapour before he was able to do any harm to himself or the chamber, and within seconds Light’s sight was gone, as heavy sleep brought itself over him – and worse yet, he had waken in a straightjacket, unable to move – the voice had warned him that the consequences would always be the same.
Every now and then, Light spoke to the camera – though not always did he receive answers, and even when he did, they were never answers to his questions. However, in a rather odd way, the mechanical, scrabbled voice was a grounding point for Light, something for his sanity to grab onto. Though the voice never was kind to him, and always made him feel worse than before, Light kept trying to get it to communicate more, like a foolish dog that keeps sticking its nose into boiling water – and so he did it again, without thought, without decision – words simply spilled out of his mouth, voice weaker than it had been yesterday – little by little, Light could realize that he was falling apart. “Kira will rise again,” he made a expression towards the camera between a grimace and a smile, “Others are bound to come, and they will not hesitate.”
Silence from the camera speaker, and Light wanted to hit it – but the camera was too high for him to reach anyways, and he knew it would probably end with him in a straightjacket again. Well, it was not like he was completely weaponless, even if his weapon was a dry wooden stick two centimeters long against a machine gun.
“Look at you, great and mighty L, too important to even talk to your prisoner,” a sneer came onto his face, “Or are you scared? Scared that I’ll find a way out?” A nonsense, he knew – Light had come to a conclusion long ago that this place was unescapable. Yet there still was a certain joy in fantasizing and letting L think he knew a way – a facade he had no doubt the detective could easily see through. However, in a bare room even useless words are fun and thrilling, for human mind yearns for stimulation. Though Light often found himself doing push-ups for the sake of doing something – because in the echo of their own thoughts can drive a person crazy if there is nothing to do – eventually even those became the same tired routine that he put barely any thought into.
The fool’s play continued, “You know, L, I forgot to mention to you something Kira could do. I know your lifespan, and it is rather low,” not that Light had any doubt that the detective would live to see the old age – with his diet of sweets, staying inside all day and other rather unhealthy habits, Light would have been surprised if the detective were to make it to fifty, even forty. Not that Light would probably be alive to see it – though for now L seemed to keep him in this place like a guinea pig, Light had no doubt that he would be killed soon.
The lights suddenly darkened, and Light decided to make one last jape, before using the opportunity to sleep – after all, dreaming in this box was always preferable to staying awake. “So you are scared, aren’t you? Putting my to sleep like that,” With that, he turned away from the camera to lay onto the hard bed – a thin mattress on a metal sheet bolted to the wall.
It did not take him long to fall asleep and dream – the dream was quite sweet, for in this alternate reality he had not hesitated – L fell into his arms, and Kira reigned over the world.
But the moment the lights brightened again – about eight hours later – he would be brought back into this box, for his own guilt had pushed him from his throne.
