how many friends does your character have? how many friends does your character want?

JUNIPER. juni has a few close female friends, less male ones. she's pretty happy with how many friends she has - she likes to feel wanted, but she doesn't super actively seek out more attention.

SPIRIT. spirit has clients who pretend to be friends and fuck buddies she pretends are friends. she wants more real friends, but she is the way that she is, so. such is life.

what would your character make a scene in public about?

JUNIPER. nothing! absolutely nothing. things are meant to be handled in private, or, more accurately, not handled at all.

SPIRIT. oh, god, just about anything. depends on how drunk or high she is, but. just about anything.

cassie is big into fashion, collaging, and decorating. they’re a very aesthetically-minded person with a great sense of style. 

cassie taught both of their partners how to rollerblade. it’s important to cassie because it’s something they can all do together.

i’d describe mack’s sense of humor as irreverent, occasionally immature and childish, and bitter. she jokes a lot about god and religious people, but not necessarily about her past. the immaturity in her humor comes from growing up in such a sheltered environment; her partners find it endearing that she still laughs at strange things like a little kid, finding joy in life’s small pleasures.

i feel like juniper definitely engages a little bit in the twee revival. the icons where she wears a ribbon in her hair as a ponytail holder are definitely accurate. she likes long patterned skirts, shirts with collars. she doesn’t wear a lot of jewelry, but what she owns is thin, simple, and cheap.

aside from the whole fire and literal arson thing? i mean, yeah, he can be quite morbid, bordering on grotesque. 

burns likes video games, bugs, and birds.

JUNIPER. the things her customers talk about — their simple worries, their even simpler pleasures. the average person's opinion of harris harris (the mafia member who thinks he's a little fruity, the neighbor who saw him slam the door, even the developing acquaintance who doesn't like the way he stares). the average person's opinion in general — she can actually be quite stubbornly convinced that she's generally doing the right thing.

MACKENZIE. offending people. understanding traditional gender and relationship roles (if only so she can fuck with them some more). finding idris when in reality she's better off if he can't somehow exonerate himself of the four murders mackenzie actually committed (but it looks bad if she doesn't want to bring her father to justice).

SPIRIT. what other people care about and want. the morality and ethics behind selling drugs to addicts or new customers. murder and senseless violence (because good people care enough to know it's wrong and shouldn't happen, right, so why is she so ambivalent towards the deceased and how they've been wronged? has time alone made her so insensitive?)

is there anything in life your muse has changed their mind about over time   (due to becoming more educated on the topic, certain experiences, etc.) , or that they   would   change their mind about under certain circumstances?  

juniper's upbringing was extremely insular. now, she is constantly learning new things that evolve her opinion on politics, social issues, scientific theories, etc.

i think one thing she would change her mind about that might surprise us as well as her is her staunch opposition to theism. it's one area she hasn't learned much about because her parents were so atheist/antitheist. but given exposure to the right kind of evangelical, i can see her changing her mind.

overall, i actually consider juniper quite impressionable. she is still so young, and there is still so much about the world she hasn't experienced. while her feelings on abuse, harassment, cruelty, and family loyalty and pretty set in stone, everything else is transient, as far as i see it.

does your muse have a love-hate relationship with anyone or anything?

spirit. juniper and spirit's relationship is incredibly volatile. juniper loves her dearly — but also looks down on her and can get very frustrated with her. spirit riles her up on purpose, which doesn't help matters.

work. juniper loves the diner — she's been there for, like years, at this point — but she can grow frustrated with customers who are disrespectful and older coworkers taking advantage of her good nature and desire to please others.

is your muse prone to jealousy? how might they handle envious feelings?  

yes, juniper is prone to jealousy — rooted in feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. at worse, juniper will be a little passive aggressive about feeling jealous of someone's relationship with someone else. generally, her feelings do not get articulated. she lets things simmer for longer than necessary or healthy.

how does your muse respond to silence? do they take comfort in soundlessness, or seek to fill the void with noise ?   

like most of the labkids, juniper doesn't do well with quiet. it's an indicator of isolation, loneliness, tension. even when she's studying or doing something with lila, she will be listening to music, a podcast, a documentary.

silence, and it accompanying solitude, were common punishments when it came to her parents.

when it comes to quiet dinners, she and burns are the main culprits of attempting to force a conversation. burns defaults to awkward and controversial topics; juniper tries to interrupt this with banal questions or positivity.

juniper tends to ramble. when she signs to lila, she is accustomed to speaking out loud as well (which slows her down, but it's fine).

in general, i dont see lila as very impulsive when it actually comes down to it. she’s too reliant on juniper, looks up to her too much. 

she might curse at harris or spend too long in the city with spirit. nothing beyond mid-range teenage rebellion.

his creators. he murdered them all brutally. (although this says little — he has brutally murdered people he feels nothing towards at all.)

she and spirit are similar in this way. juniper is this way when it comes to harris, which is unique to her, which is unfortunate.

1. lila being willing to communicate. it actually took a long time to teach lila asl because she just wasn’t ready to engage with the world; she was very young and scared.

2. spirit living in the city. juniper couldn’t handle spirit living in poughkeepsie with them; the constant fighting with harris and herself would just be too much. (spirit is also an implicit reminder she’s being haunted by her parents, which is morbid and unpleasant.) 

3. on the other hand, juniper is grateful her parents died in the fire. she feels awful for thinking this, but she knows it’s for the best. if they’d survived, she and her new family would never be safe.

cassie generally wears pants with pockets and carries a tote or statement bag. cassie is meticulous and organized, so their pockets rarely contain more than a set of keys and a Swiss army knife (just like Mack’s, just like JM’s). their bag has a beat-up cigarette carton, a lighter, a nice wallet, random gifts for their partners, etc.

mackenzie is a deeply prideful individual, with an easily bruised ego. and, yes, mackenzie is proud of all the things she’s done: the killing and the dismantling of her father’s cult. 

which is kind of twisted, because many of the people she killed were victims of him just as much as she was. idris was a compelling and manipulative man. however, mackenzie has long since justified her actions as the ends justifying the means, as the only way to destroy her father’s work while he was still alive to see it fall apart. 

mackenzie is proud of her ability to convince jm and cass of this.
