Name: Mr. Blizzard
Debut: Super Mario 64
Who ordered the Funny Snowman? Not you, because this is a blog and not a restaurant, silly! You are just so silly. But between you and me, I am a fan of Funny Snowman, so I will humor you!
Mr. Blizzard is one of the first snowmen to appear in the Mario series, and the one who would become the most iconic and recurring. This is something he should be proud of, since Super Mario 64 has a bunch of snowmen in it! But one of them based his whole identity around missing his head, and the other one is an entire location. Gimmicks that make them memorable, sure, but not very versatile for future use!
Tumblr media
Mr. Blizzard's design really notably uses billboarding, the graphical trick where a sprite will always face the camera, giving flat circles the appearance of spheres in a slightly blurry 3D world. Snowmen are SO orbs! Some of the most orbs guys I can think of! It was a very good decision. Mr. Blizzard is honestly slightly unconventional compared to other cartoon snowmen, with no nose- nay, nary a carrot- and a simple line mouth, rather than the typical "series of dots" mouth that we know and love. Instead, it has a blank, autism creature face, with its eyes and mouth seemingly made of the same material! Mouth made of eye, or eyes made of mouth? You won't know until you kiss him on the lips!
Tumblr media
Nowadays, Mr. Blizzard uses a new design, which I also like a lot! This time he has a scraggly mouth because he is, as I assume he would say, "not too sure about this one, guys". He now has snow buttons on his torso, revealing that he was previously NAKED down there, and he also wears a bucket as a hat! That's one of those things that's so common in Japanese media, but in Western media it's always a top hat. So funny how one cartoon snowman had such influence on media! The average snowman-builder is much more likely to own a plastic bucket than a top hat!
Tumblr media
Mr. Blizzard's main Thing is his single arm, adorned with a cute little mitten, which he uses to throw snowballs. Do you think that's like throwing his own flesh? I don't think so. If clothing buttons and igloos can also be made of snow, I think snow is just the building block of a snowman's world. But still, imagine some cattle throwing delicious meatballs at each other. Messed up! How would they even do that with hooves? Would they use their tongues like slingshots? What was I talking about? Where am I?
Tumblr media
Oh yes! I am in "Snow World". Mr. Blizzard is a recurring enemy snowman, but Mario's world is also full of morally neutral living snowman, who DO have carrot noses, thank goodness. These snomonculuses are obstacles on snowy Mario Kart courses, but it's kind of rude to refer to them as that. Is a pedestrian an obstacle to a driver? Suffer, vehicles, as I wield my high level spell called "right of way"!
Tumblr media
In Mario Kart Tour, these entities are exclusively referred to as Snowpeople! Gender? They hardly snow 'er!

I’ve made a whole post about why I don’t think Mario has any true canon months ago, yet at the same time also pointed out some things where Mario can be surprisingly consistent.
Truth to be told, while I do point to inconsistencies in the games, which are plentiful, the main culprit are Nintendo themselves.
I tend to look at what they say and how they operate to, as best as possible, gauge their intentions with a lot of stuff and a good example of their willingness to play fast and loose and actively alter information is with the Koopalings:
Tumblr media
Contrary to what is often quoted, Miyamoto never said they never were Bowser’s kids, but rather that in ‘’their current story’’ Jr is his only child.
Another example of them changing their stance as they see fit to me is how they treated the subject of Mario and Luigi being plumbers.
We have very direct statements of how during the 2010s, people were not allowed to bring up that subject matter in videos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even a documented instance of a Japanese bio referring to Mario as having been a plumber a long time ago.
Tumblr media
Which, as seen on the screenshot, has obviously been changed since and we got even more recent examples of the movie and one of Wonder’s loading screen trivia bits presenting his occupation proudly. Even at the time 3D World wasn’t shy about it:
Tumblr media
Which is one of several times where official statements and in-game content don’t exactly align, heck, it’s weird on a general level given pipes are such a crucial bit of iconography for the franchise, derived by the fact that Mario and Luigi are indeed plumbers.
Stuff like that is why the Toad and Captain Toad thing is a sore spot for me. I never actually denied official sources claiming they are different character, but even despite that kind of explicit statement:
They chose to okay Galaxy supplementary materials that call Toad the Toad Brigade Captain and put him on the cover of Galaxy 2, in the same spot Captain is at in the Starship Mario art no less.
They chose to not have red spots, blue vest Toad in 3D World besides a pre-release Captain Toad life icon, instead having a Blue Toad be playable, which is not how the Toad character is ever represented, to the point where when 3D World art and renders are used to represent him, they are ALWAYS edited to give him the red spots. It’s hard to call it a SMB2 callback, because unlike say, Luigi’s Mansion King Boo or Biker Wario, it’s never even acknowledged or brought back like other game specific designs.
They chose to have a pre-release bonus for Treasure Tracker, an amiibo bundle for it and the function for said amiibo, to be all based around Toad and one of the mission descriptions even just calls him Toad, despite Captain Toad supposedly being a name.
They chose to give Captain in TT Toadette as a partner and include SMB2 elements like turnips and Shy Guys (only red and blue ones like in that game no less) which have no relevance to this supposed separate character, yet are highly tied to Toad.
They chose to have Mario in the Toad costume be called Captain in special Mario Challenge dialogue, in the first Mario Maker.
They chose to show Captain when talking about Toad in an Odyssey developer’s Q&A video.
They chose to have the Toad spirit become Captain Toad in Smash Ultimate, lining up with stuff like Shadow becoming Super Shadow or Alm, Celica and Isaac becoming their adult selves.
They chose to give Captain in Mario Kart Tour most of Toad’s animations, a trait *only* seen with variants and even classify him as a variant internally. Party Time Toad, who is definitively him, has more distinct animations than Captain does.
They chose to give Toad a treasure hunting themed expansion set and even call him a treasure hunter in LEGO Mario, an ongoing merch-line with an extremely big name.
They chose to continue the 3D World thing with Wonder, keeping Toad off the roster when Captain is around, while Mario vs DK has him playable no problem.
They chose to let the movie, Mario’s biggest non-gaming outing to date, very explicitly treat Toad and Captain as the same character and even give out pamphlets explaining references in the movie in Japan. Said pamphlet calls Treasure Tracker Toad’s game, making no mention of Captain as a separate character.
They chose to make a big promo video promoting Mario games tied to certain characters and have Toad tied to Treasure Tracker. This video was also put on the Nintendo Switch news tab, mentioning Captain by name in the description, yet showing Toad and it has its own spot on the Nintendo website too. Additionally they list Treasure Tracker in Toad’s list of appearances on Play Nintendo.
In isolation I wouldn’t think much of any of these, but when it happens so often I do start to wonder what the idea is. They are shooting every opportunity to establish Captain as his own character, especially for normies who likely just saw him and assumed he was Toad anyways, in the foot.
I tend to refer to the movie a lot when trying to cite Nintendo’s seeming attitude towards some things too and yeah, I do still think it’s a big deal the New York backstory is back. It clashes with the Yoshi’s Island backstory, which is also supported by Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, but THAT backstory in turn clashes with the pre-SMB games and bios as late as 1994, that referred to Mario as italian, Foreman Spike as american and Pauline as being from New York, still establishing the old backstory as relevant enough to be brought up in character guides.
They are questionably compatible, but that’s because they are from very different eras of Mario. The Yoshi’s Island one will likely persist as the more commonly referred to one, because it mixes better with Mario’s SMB onwards world, but the old backstory is still accepted enough by Nintendo to allow it in a monster hit movie.
And that’s the thing, the movie takes liberties, but still holds true to a vision Nintendo themselves want to have out there, for Mario and his world. They know many people will be exposed to Mario for the first time in a while or possibly ever, through the movie and okayed for it as a way to interpret the franchise, that is a big deal.
Is the movie ‘’canon’’ to the games? We don’t know, Mario doesn’t have an officially recognized canon ala’ Hyrule Hystoria. It may not be canon in the sense of having happened in the game universe 1:1, but it is canon as a Nintendo approved, modern, big interpretation of Mario.
And the thing is, regardless if it’s canon or not, it’s influence can already be felt.
The Peach Showtime cover art has been updated in a way that makes Peach resemble her movie design a bit more, Wonder’s animation upgrade was directly motivated by living up to the movie’s standards of how people expect the characters to move and animate and then you got this:
Tumblr media
A video on Nintendo’s official Youtube accounts, a Switch news tab article and even it’s own page on their website. A remarkably pushed marketing pull for games conveniently only highlighting characters in the movie and the game selection is clearly inspired by that too. Smash for DK to replicate his fight with Mario, Toad explicitly being called Captain, Mario Kart for Peach because that section was a prominent marketing scene for her, etc.
Nintendo’s biggest concern is how they want the brand to be presented, more than any canon. I’ll call out inconsistencies when I see them, but in general, this is what I pay attention to the most and why I am very accepting of the fact Mario is always bound to face changes, bigger and smaller, that may at times even be departures from what came before.

Mario Kart 8 - Booster Course Pack Wave 6 Speculation/Obsessing
I've always loved the Mario Kart games, but for my money Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the new gold standard for the entire kart-racing genre. It just FEELS SO GOOD to drive these goofy little contraptions around and blow up your friends in psychedelic cartoon worlds.
Booster Course Pack Wave 5 just dropped this week and I'm loving this shit. Squeaky Clean Sprint?! KAMEK?!
Tumblr media
This unholy union?!
Of course as awesome as this stuff is, I can't help but think about that one last wave of goodies we're getting at the end of the year. At the very least we know we're getting two new drivers and 8 new-old courses (with 1 or 2 possibly being brand new), but at this point Nintendo hasn't announced any specifics.
It's fun to guess and speculate though! Since we're only guaranteed 2 new drivers (and there's a smaller pool to pull from), I started there.
Prior to the Booster Course Packs adding Birdo, Kamek, Wiggler, and Petey Piranha (all drivers who have appeared in previous MKs), Nintendo added guest characters from non-Mario series like Link, Splatoon Girl, and Isabelle. While it's POSSIBLE they could hit us with someone brand new and/or from a different series, I'm thinking it's more likely they'll pull these last 2 drivers from the existing Kartiverse.
With that in mind, here are the standout possibilities from previous Karts:
Tumblr media
DIDDY KONG in Double-Dash!!, Wii, Tour Iconic sidekick/costar of Donkey Kong Country series, and three-time karter (not to mention headlining his OWN kart games). On one hand it's fuckin' crazy to me that he's not already in here, but on the other hand if I can only pick one more Kong, I'd rather have Funky or Dixie 😬sorry didds
Tumblr media
HAMMER BRO in Tour I like Hammer Bros, I've always thought of them as Bowser's elite goon squad--hammers hurt and their helmets are dope. On the flipside we already have Koopa-Troopa, Lakitu, Dry Bones, and Kamek, plus 9 Bowser-flavored Koopas. We might already be over koopacity.
Tumblr media
MONTY MOLE in Tour This is some goofy left-field shit that I am absolutely into. Not my first choice, but funny, cute and strange enough to be worth it. He a mole driving a car
Tumblr media
PEACHETTE in Tour So even though this looks exactly like Peach in a slightly goofier outfit, it's actually Toadette in a powered-up form from New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.. Identity theft is a crime, Toadette.
Tumblr media
PAULINE in Tour Mario's original damsel in distress, Pauline debuted way back on the original Donkey Kong arcade cabinet, but also had a major role in Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch (plus a bunch of handheld DK games in-between). Glamorous singing mayor-lady, cool! Why the fuck not! We better get a New Donk City track if she's added tho
Tumblr media
KITSUNE LUIGI in Tour Look I know I gave Peachette a lot of shit for being an obscure power-up (this one hailing from Super Mario 3D Land and World), but at least we can tell this is still Luigi! Plus it'd complement Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach REAL nice. Let me have this. Luigi needs a win. It's not a furry thing (not that there's anything wrong with that!).
Tumblr media
POOCHY in Tour This fuckin' guy. I still have acid flashbacks to his levels in Yoshi's Island. Still tho, big ol' dog-thing driving car is hilarious, I'd sign off on his goofy ass
Tumblr media
FUNKY KONG in Wii, Tour Finally, another prospect with more than Tour on his Karting resume. Funky Kong fuckin' rules. DKC's resident gearhead, party animal, and big lovable himbo dumbass, this dude gotta come back. Non-negotiable. HE WEARS JORTS... WITH A BELT
Tumblr media
DIXIE KONG in Tour The other coolest Kong. Probably technically cooler than Funky. It'd be crazy if both new characters were Kongs, but if they were Funky and Dixie I would shit my pants with joy. Dixie's badass.
Tumblr media
NABBIT in Tour This would make sense, but I would also be like "sure why not." Shitty little thieving rabbit-man is fine. Is anyone clamoring for this? No judgement, just curiosity. I got kind of sick of the New Super Mario Bros. series, but I don't speak for the whole fuckin' world.
Tumblr media
KING BOB-OMB in Tour HAHAHA YES!!! BIG DUMB ORB MUSTACHE CROWN MAN. I also lost my shit when he showed up in the Mario movie. If B-list bosses like Petey Piranha and King Boo get to drive, let this big fancy idiot. He probably accidentally explodes like a dingaling when he doesn't win.
Tumblr media
MEOWSER in Tour Like Kitsune Luigi, this would be a nice complement to Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach, but we already have Bowser Classic, Jr., Dry, and his 7 delightful little punkass shithead kids. Meowser does benefit from reminding me of Kintaro, from my OTHER favorite game series with the initials "MK":
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
CHARGIN' CHUCK in Tour A different listicle already mentioned his fucking awesome-ass burger'n'fries mobile being the best part of him. I'm trying not to accidentally rip off that listicle COMPLETELY, but I might have. Sorry. I think it was on Hard Times/Hard Drive? CC's beefiness and sporty theming could save him from being another face in the Koopa Krowd, but he's not my first draft pick.
Tumblr media
CAPTAIN TOAD in Tour I'm all over the place on this one. El Capitano has his own spin-off games--that's pretty legit! But he's just Toad with some different clothes on... but so is Metal Mario and Cat Peach! Do we need a third Toad? If he's a higher weight class because of his gear, then maybe!
Tumblr media
HONEY QUEEN in MK7 Aww, remember Super Mario Galaxy?! I like when lady-characters get to be something besides "skinny human princess." If fricking Petey Piranha can race again, so can this big ol' bee!
Tumblr media
PARATROOPA in MKDD!! Ah, our millionth Koopa! Jokes aside, since Paratroopa has ONLY been in Double Dash!! (the one where every driver needed an obvious partner), I bet he's a major longshot. Kamek, Wiggler, and Petey Piranha were all in Tour, so I'm inclined to think Nintendo will be pulling from the Tour roster. But who the hell knows! Here are some other (unlikely) prospects.
Tumblr media
R.O.B. in MKDS Between this and his playable debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, R.O.B., the (in)famous robot peripheral for the NES/Famicom, was having a little moment in the 2000s. A wave of 1980s nostalgia or a 20th anniversary celebration, maybe? I'm not expecting him to come back again after almost ANOTHER 20 years (Jesus Christ), but I love his kart that makes it look like he has little legs.
Tumblr media
PAC-MAN AND OTHER WEIRDOS FROM THE ARCADE COLLABORATION WITH NAMCO in Mario Kart Arcade GP, Arcade GP2, and Arcade GP DX Again, non-Tour to me says longshot, but fuck it would be weird and cool to play as Ms. Pac-Man. Blinky the ghost, one of the Tamagotchis and a happy little arcade drum also made the cut!
Tumblr media
Mametchi aka The Cooler Nabbit.
Tumblr media
OK he's actually a BIG, SASSY cartoon drum. Still cute. Crazy that the Prince from the Katamari games wasn't playable in these, IMO he'd be perfect and have a deliciously funky, knobby kartamari.

Mario Kart Tour: Oxford Foray
Told you this page would be random.
I think an underappreciated aspect of Tour's city track design is their atmosphere. They don't just tour recognisable landmarks in a believable layout, they really capture the city's character! From New York's dazzling nightlife to LA's casual appeal, Singapore's extreme extravagance to Sydney's energetic simplicity, Vancouver's splashes of colour and natural beauty, Amsterdam's effortless harmony with canals and nature alike, Rome's ancient architecture with comfortable life on top, Madrid's modern bustle with impressive history underneath, Athens' proud (and hilly) past and Bangkok's humble yet hopeful future, and Berlin's seamless integration of all eras: they're all accurate as far as I can surmise. There's only a few that I think don't quite hit the mark. Paris’ modernity is smothered in quaint romanticism, though what else could one expect, Tokyo has little of its maximalist flair, but perhaps the graphics limited that, and then… London.
I'm certainly biased, it being my home country and the only city on the list I've seen for more than a day, but it seems to only hit the beats of its most recognisable icons: laudably no doubt, but the city isn't just its imposing imperial riches! What strikes me about London is its fast-paced mishmash of cultures that fill in all the gaps between the great British statements like water running over cobbled streets: history and novelty around every corner! The course gives me the impression of the former but not the latter.
I'm not sure I'm qualified to rectify this, but I can make up for it with another English icon! My hometown has its history, but not enough to base a tour around. My current homestead, however, is undeniably culturally significant, and it's not just that. I hope I did well to convey the place as storied and not just interesting, but inviting, a genuinely fun place to stay for a day or a year. That's how I feel about it at least.
HERE WE GO
Tumblr media
1: Our foray begins on the left side of the picturesque High Street, between Queen’s College and the Examination Schools. It’s a noticeably wide street (and a noticeably wide gothic limestone starting gate with a waving chequered flag to boot), with a cobbled dividing strip, and plenty of buses to crowd the way! As the road narrows and items are collected, there’s a right turn into the Covered Market, which has three narrow lanes to choose from, and a few opportunities to weave between.
Out of the market is a sharp right turn down a walled alley, with the lovely Exeter and Lincoln colleges adjoining. This is before a huge 180 turn with another item set around the Radcliffe Camera, an impressive dome in the middle of a big communal square. Having lost its fence, at that, so if you’ve got a mushroom and are prepared to miss out on items, the shortcut is worth it! Racers continue north past All Souls College and the Bodleian Library to reach the roundabout connecting Broad Street and Holywell Street. Remember the Bridge of Sighs to your right.
The route continues up Parks Road, a leafy avenue with plenty of boost panels, before splitting around Keble College! If you continue straight forwards, you get an easy wide road, and a view of both the Natural History Museum and University Parks. However, if you take that subtle sharp left, you can find a potentially faster cut-through that’s a bit tougher to navigate. I didn’t even have to design this one!
Both options reconvene at the apex of St Giles, where a patch of off-road leads to an optional ramp, and the road broadens to quite a degree, leaving room for a ridiculous row of coins. The abbreviated straight ends at the Martyr’s Memorial, which now has just a humble patch of grass behind it instead of an entire church, just to improve the flow.
A quick left turn introduces Broad Street, which, you guessed it, also widens out, somewhat narrowed by some of the city’s numerous bike racks. However, this one has its right half covered in short wooden ramps, for the first half! These can be useful for some trick boosts, but more coins lay the other way. Items are given at the halfway point. Before reaching the roundabout at the end, there is a conspicuous diversion past the Sheldonian Theatre (which has no fence, to make way for the race) and through the library complex towards the Bridge of Sighs. Racers may either run straight through the gate (tricking as they go) or take the grated glider ramps to make it over the bridge!
The return to the start line via New College Lane and Queen’s Lane is a winding, narrow path, walled in by the historic namesake colleges. You’ll have to forgive them for not having karts running through their grounds. Nonetheless, navigate those chicanes and a final left turn (with a sneaky cut over the pavement) brings you back to the line. It’s a long one alright!
Tumblr media
2: As in track 1, we begin on the High Street, though this time we forge ahead past the Covered Market, the traffic turning off before the Carfax Tower, until the course swerves into the Westgate Centre. In a strikingly similar manner to Coconut Mall, the route has two walkways either side of an optional drop with escalators, before a right turn into a more open area where the drop and escalators are forced. I swear it’s coincidental! The decor is distinct at least.
After grabbing items wherever you may encounter them, exit the mall via another sharp right turn onto open road. Make use of its breadth before you have to navigate the Castle & Prison, which is exactly what it sounds like! A couple of narrow turns later, there is a brief anti-grav uphill to wind up the Castle Mound to a big glider ramp, from which one must avoid the dreaming spires of Nuffield College and St Peter’s College some random church, or grab some of the revolving coins if you’re daring…
Though you could just drop onto the street, the Ashmolean’s grand ionic forum is a perfect landing place, where one can drift around to jump down the stairs and find themselves heading onto Broad Street once again! This time, the route heads past the theatre and turns at the roundabout, so the other lot of ramps, this time occupying the left half, can be made useful. The lap ends the way you’d expect after turning at the roundabout.
Tumblr media
3: Unlike both 2 and 1, we start our race on Cornmarket Street (under a long hanging sign of oil paints on wood, the closest I can get to putting a pub in a kids’ game), a place I would be remiss not to include, along with its clutter of bicycle parking. If there’s one thing you notice about transit in Oxford, it’s how many bicycles are in the way. However, if you can dodge around the racks, you may find some coins or even dash panels…
Anyway, Cornmarket is a simple, if not uninterrupted, straight, which racers take south, spying once again the Carfax Tower and then the Town Hall and impressive Christ Church. You know, the big one. The road continues down St Aldates with all its traffic, but soon turns left through the open gates of Christ Church Meadow! The next half of the lap takes place in greener pastures, first down a puddle-ridden southward straightaway with sparse items and Moo Moos spectating, then when the course meets the Thames and Folly Bridge, a more wide open snaking route with grass shortcuts abound! The riverside path remains intact, but still off-road.
After doing this eastward a while, the course drastically narrows as it winds its way northward strictly following the meanders of the Cherwell. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from driving through the river itself, but the bumpy terrain and drag force balances any advantage of breadth. A wiser path is found by jumping onto a series of punts, which can be quite hard to aim for, but offer a trick each time. They’re not hard to come by in Oxford. This continues all the way to the Botanic Gardens, which can themselves be snuck through via a gap in the fence. Those wishing for a complete row of item boxes and, of course, the exquisite surroundings, can find themselves jumping over the pond in the south section before reaching the north, where a quick right around the fountain directs you between the greenhouses to reenter the river. The river, of course, does continue past the gardens, but who would want to miss out? Especially when that part of the bed gets so muddy…
When you’ve finally made it to Magdalen Bridge, you need only drive under it to find a wide slope up to the roundabout, which is drifted around before crossing the bridge to witness the lovely Magdalen Tower! We then cross the line - the line from the other versions, that is - before sneaking past the University Church to reach the road past the Radcliffe Camera. The Bodleian Library can now be dashed through for a guaranteed double box, if you can find the narrow entry! The rest is obvious: take Broad Street one last time, westward now, to reach the top of Cornmarket Street.
Tumblr media
So how might these all fit together if they were given the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe treatment? Honestly, probably better than the individual courses! Lap 1 takes version 1, of course, but stops short of Broad Street, instead cutting through via Cornmarket to start lap 2, with version 2 taking over by way of a right turn at Carfax Tower. Lap 3 simply commences from the High Street and doesn’t bother with the whole Broad Street diversion: we’ve already seen it!
Oh right, I also made the music for it! You'll have to forgive Musescore's playback engine, they try, bless 'em.
It too had to be truly emblematic of Oxford, and besides the obvious historical, academic, fancy vibes, no sound reminds me more of this place than the echoing of church bells! And there are choirs in every college. So I ended up with a rather baroque piece, arpeggiated bass, change ringing, suspensions and all, which certainly suits the locale, but does NOT typically suit Mario Kart's encouraging energy. Heck, they almost always rely on synths, too, let alone their melody-first composition style that is entirely unfamiliar. How did I fit the mould? By focusing on intensity of Biblical proportions! If there's one thing choirs and organs can do, it's a ramp-up of DRAMA. With enough build and release, it's got the natural energy. Slap on a drum-beat and it ends up shockingly fitting. With all the zero inspiration I had to go on, I seriously surprised myself with this one. Judge for yourself!
Oxford is quite a convenient place to work with: most cities are so massive that you have to smush all the landmarks together and the layout doesn’t quite come naturally. But this place is already so compact, and packed with unmistakable buildings! Also, I know they’re trying to be flattering, but can you believe London saw not a drop of rain?! I think Oxford should be partially cloudy by contrast, providing a gentle rainfall, but with enough streams of sunlight to pierce the depressing grey… it could make the meadow look positively angelic!
Perhaps one day I’ll try my hand at Hong Kong Hustle to address Tokyo’s plight… or Shanghai Streets, I can’t decide! And then there’s one that is so easy to make that it’d be kind of funny just to do for the sake of it. We’ll see.
If anyone wants to take the names Rio de Janeiro Jaunt, New Delhi Journey, Moscow Scoot, Stockholm Swing, Cairo Cruise, Geneva Chase, or best of all, Brussels Bout, be my guest. And if any modders feel like 3d-modelling most of Oxford for me, I would love to give it a look :D

Listen Mario fans be eating good Tonight.
Mario kart 8 deluxe getting a beeg house track with Petey, Wiggler, AND Kamek? Stunning. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon getting a remake? Stunning. Mario+Rabbids dlc? Beautiful. A NEW WARIOWARE GAME SO SOON AFTER THE LAST ONE? BRILLIANT! PEACH GETTING A NEW GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2005? BRILLIANT! SUPER MARIO RPG REMAKE!?? SUPER MARIO FUCKING WONDER!?
I'm so hyped and this direct as well as the movie are pushing me deeper into my Mario universe obsession.
HOWEVER, not trying to sound greedy here; but I'm kinda disappointed we didn't see a new Wario Land or Donkey Kong Country, since we haven't seen either since 2009 and 2013 respectfully. HOWEVER! I have a theory; a very crack-y theory but one regardless; is that Wario and Donkey Kong are going to be playeble in Super Mario Wonder With their move sets from WL and DKC respectfully.
The evidence for Wario;
Tumblr media
This was the twitter user who originally leaked Super Mario Bros Wonder as well as Super Mario RPG Remake. Of course we know what the Daisy, Elephant, and Caterpillar Emojis mean; being playeble Daisy, the Elephant powerup, and the Crawling pipe. We don't know what the Star, Purple, and coin Emoji mean. Alot of people have been speculating that this is a hint towards playeble Rosalina, Waluigi and Wario respectfully. PLUS Wario was originally planned to be playeble in both NSMBWii and NSMB2, particularly stated to use his Wario Land moveset (atleast in NSMB2's case) Peach was also considered to be playeble In NSMBWii and later became playeble in here. Also having Wario being in a mainline Mario game isn't unprecedented *cough* SM64DS *cough* Also WarioWare Get it together! Had Wario preforming his iconic shoulder bash, so likely the Wario Land games are in public conscious. and, atleast according to jack black we are likely to see Wario in the second Mario Movie, and I feel like would get references to WarioWare and Wario Land, as well as a Lego Wario set and Wario Land/ WarioWare charecters in Mario Kart Tour...speaking of which;
As for Donkey Kong;
Tumblr media
Nintendo has been advertising Donkey Kong Country like CRAZY! there's the Mario+Rabbids DLC, there's now Lego Donkey Kong sets, Dixie Kong AND Funky Kong got in Mario Kart Tour, He was a Huge part of the movie, which also featured Cranky Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and oh yeah, Chunky Kong and Swanky Kong!? Really Really deep cuts. There's atleast Something brewing with Donkey Kong for them to do nothing with him, and to be far the rumors of a new 3d Donkey Kong are probably true. But it seems odd to have nothing be done with him until then. I think that Donkey Kong being in Super Mario Wonder would be a great way to tide fans over, plus the movie showed him using Mario Powerups!? Like Nintendo had to approve that to some capacity.
Another sub theory I have relating to the Mario Movie and potential could be true for Super Mario Bros Wonder or a new Donkey Kong game;
Tumblr media
I feel like the reason why they put Dixie, Diddy, AND Chunky right next to eachother was because either In Super Mario Wonder or a new DKC; They'll be playeble alongside Donkey Kong to reference the original Donkey Kong Country (with Chunky replacing Kiddie, since let's face it no one likes Kiddie Kong and Chunky Kong is better in every single way)
Ok I'm sorry for the funny wahoo man brainworms I'm just REALLY excited for Super Mario Bros Wonder.

On a bit of a tier list kick and realised “goddamn I’ve played a lot of different Mario Kart games recently” so decided to rank them :D
Tumblr media
Notes below:
Idc what anyone says Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the most fun I’ve had playing any of these. “But it’s so much easier” “but the booster course is just a cash grab” I don’t care!! I enjoy it!! There so many tracks to choose from and all of their soundtracks are so goddamn good!! Plus the booster course is slowly improving the character roster which is amazing!! I know it’s the old “new=good” thing but this time it’s true I’m sorry
On the other hand, Mario Kart Wii. I’m nostalgic I’m sorry but can you really blame me when this game literally ruled my childhood from ages 5-10? So many cool and iconic nitro tracks and the best character roster in the whole series. I’d love to play it again if my wii remotes weren’t broken
Okay so I didn’t remember all that much about Mario Kart DS. I knew I had it when I was a kid but other than a few courses I had mostly forgotten about the game, but I bought it second hand the other day and omg. This game slaps. It’s so fucking fun and I can’t believe I forgot about it. Straight to top A tier
Mario Kart 7 is also probably a nostalgia based pick tbh but it was the game that actually made me play Mario Kart properly. I learned to drift in MK7 and overall appreciated the competitive side of the series a lot more. Also it has my all time favourite track, Melody Motorway :) (or Music Park for Americans)
Honestly the only reason I enjoyed Mario Kart 64 as much as I did was because it’s so fucking chaotic and brutal to the point where it’s funny. Drifted too far? Approached the jump awkwardly? Oops you’re now facing backwards and in last place! Some of the courses are ridiculously long *cough* Rainbow Road which lowers it
Probably a bit controversial but I do enjoy Tour. I haven’t played in over a year but late 2021 - mid 2022 I played it to DEATH because one of my irls got me back into it and coincidentally this was a pretty rough period in my life, so I do owe it one for keeping me stable. Kinda sucked that they got rid of the gatcha feature though :(
Mario Kart Super Circuit is really tricky for me but I really like the graphics. That’s probably it’s only saving grace lmao. Maybe I just find the GBA era of pixel graphics to be endearing idk. It has the same level of brutality as N64 but nowhere near as fun
I have played the arcade game a few times in amusements and it is fun :) that’s it. I don’t play it enough to actually have a proper opinion.
Og Mario Kart is very annoying and the tracks and boring. If I see their asses as a retro track I am not happy >:(
Never owned a Wii U so I never played the og Mario Kart 8 but all I know is that MK8D vastly improved on a lot of its flaws over the years so ultimately it is just better. Also I desperately want to play Double Dash (please add GameCube games to the switch Nintendo holy shit) and I would rank it high because all the tracks that have been turned into retro tracks are so so fun.

mario posting
i know games like mario kart 8 and tour have too many characters but its interesting who they “passed up” in some regards. like why has e gadd never been made playable in any game, even when luigis mansion stuff is featured like a stage or whatever. they gave king boo a LM costume in tour when LM3 released and thats cool, makes me wish that was his default design but the current one is cute at least. its also funny to me that the honey queen bee’s icon is on a badge in tour but shes never been added to the game. do the devs know how much people hated her and knew no one would whale for the fucking bee from galaxy lol i think the reason she was added to 7 in the first place was because the director wanted another heavyweight female driver. its why rosalina is so tall, when galaxy and mk wii were in development together, the wii staff knew a new princess was being introduced in galaxy and wanted her in the game, but the director probably wanted to even out the genders of the weight classes with at least one woman, rosa is the only heavy woman in that game after all. so he requested she be made tall so it would make sense. even now she’s the only woman in the large size class in 8, but pink gold peach was introduced to add another heavy woman. so honey queen was plucked from galaxy to fill that role in 7. of course this all came, somewhat, at the cost of waluigi which is super funny ngl. i wonder why madame broodal wasnt added to tour as well tbh. theyre so weird with odyssey stuff, like new donk, pauline’s new persona as the jazz singer mayor, and some minor gameplay mechanics have found their way into some side games but hardly anything, like characters or new enemies, have been featured. when sunshine release, piantas were fucking everywhere, all the sports games featured sunshine references, you went to delfino isle in smash, all that stuff. galaxy gave us lumas and several new enemies that leaked into spin offs, but most of it has been from new super mario bros. even 3d world barely had much influence. the cat characters are in tour at least, and cat peach is in 8/dx. but where are the tosterenans? the shiverians? the loch ladies? where is cappy, its so weird its like they want to keep the mario branding so tight theyll only allow the main series games to go “off script” with characters and designs but not any side games or other devs. whatever. i hope pauline is added to the mk8 booster courses

More Mario Kart icons, this time with every partner from the first two Paper Mario games!
These were all really fun to work on, for different reasons. For partners based on common Mario enemies, it was fun to edit that enemy's icon to fit the partner, and for the rest like Vivian, it was fun coming up with original designs to suit them. Now, to go over some insight about the making of these:
Goombario and Goombella's icons are actually based on this emblem from Dr. Mario World. To my knowledge this is the only actual Goomba emblem, as he doesn't appear in games like Mario Kart or Mario Tennis. I was originally just gonna do a silhouette of their mouths/teeth, but this worked way better.
Tumblr media
Kooper was easily the easiest icon to make, literally just a recolor of Koopa's emblem. Koops has a green shell, so to make it stand out, I decided to make it cracked and put a band-aid over it. Both because he has a band-aid on his nose and fits with his clumsy personality, and as a reference to his Shell Shield attack.
Was at a loss at what to do for Bombette so I settled for a profile of her head and ponytail, similar to King Bob-omb's icon in Tour. I almost did that for Bobbery too, but the hat was way too much of a hassle to draw, and it probably would have been too busy anyway. So instead, I made it the little anchor symbol on his hat. I think it works!
Cheep Cheeps don't have an official emblem to my knowledge, so I just did a profile of Sushie, and put her underwater to make her a bit more unique. Lakilester is just Lakitu's emblem with his glasses and hair added onto it. Parakarry's icon is based on the letters from Paper Mario 1, with Paratroopa wings attached. Lady Bow is obviously based on King Boo's emblem, just with ribbons instead of a crown. And for Watt I just did another front-facing profile. Kind of looks like a Smash Ultimate stock icon now that I think of it!
As for the rest of the Thousand-Year Door party, Yoshi / Yoshi Kid / Mini-Yoshi / whatever you wanna call him has the egg, but with the colored spots from the egg he hatched from. I also put an explosion effect behind it to make it more action-packed - he's from the Glitz Pit after all!
Flurrie is definite the most, erm, "customized" of all of these icons, and if she were to get into Mario Kart (she never will lmao) Nintendo would likely do something completely different with her. But I think the heart and earrings work well. Vivian's icon is her hat with a purple V, it's another pretty custom one and the hat on its own could have worked just as well, but I like it, it's cute like Vivian! And finally, Ms. Mowz is her mask, ears, and tail. Black backgrounds are normally reserved for evil characters like Bowser, but I kinda had no choice if I didn't want her ears to be invisible lol.
And that's that! Not sure if I'll be making more icons after this, at least with a specific theme. Might do some assortment ones where I just do a random group of characters. But I hope you enjoy these in the meantime.

Reupload Gonanza - Part 13, Section 2 (May, 2020)
Mario artwork. i made a ton of Mario artwork.
the selfie was in context of wanting to make a roleplay Twitter account. not sure i’ll do that.
earlier that year i started making icons of every Mario character in Mario Kart, where i then splintered off to characters from Mario Party and stuff. there’s a lot of costumes in Mario Kart Tour; i’m into drawing new characters...
i’m going to talk about how people have treated these icons of mine.
these icons, actually, have been stolen a lot by popular YouTubers, oftentimes without credit, which i've always asked for since i’ve begun making art.
Tumblr media
Sirloin is a popular example; they will steal my artwork bi-monthly for some fucking reason. i once asked for them to properly credit me, but they’ve never responded.
Tumblr media
Switch Stop also took my Dixie Kong artwork and i’ve commented once for them to properly give me credit. i checked the video out later and my comment was gone.
art theft is such a prevalent thing in my artist life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...this is a video made in september of 2022; this year. you can check the description of the video. they haven’t corrected themselves at all. i’d like to do something about it, but i don’t like making enemies anymore.
i’ve made a youtube playlist for me to help find videos that took my artwork, either with credit or without. it really sucks to see my hard work being taken by exploitative YouTubers that are more busy huffing their content money rather than respecting the people that got them their money.
sorry for the pissy attitude. let’s enter section 3

Okay so with the Booster Pass coming to Mario Kart 8, I've been wanting to put together a formal list of my most wanted courses across the series. It took me a minute to actually, like, refresh my thoughts on some of said courses (mostly those in Super Circuit and Super Mario Kart, which I never played as a kid), but here we are! For every main Mario Kart game (and one bad mobile spinoff), the top three courses I want to see added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!
It ought to be interesting to come back to this after the Booster Pass is complete and see how many I got. Granted, I'm of the opinion that the Booster Pass will bring every track in Tour across for maximum asset reuse, so we might have a good idea already.
Super Mario Kart
Bowser Castle 3 - As of Tour, the only stage "theme" in SMK to not get some sort of redone version is Bowser Castle, and that feels like a shame! With their most complicated track layouts, ramps, and being suspended over lava, they seem like they would lend themselves to modernized versions very well. I picked Bowser Castle 3 in particular for its sequence of ramps near the beginning, which would be fun to trick off of and be an easy place to add some verticality, and the three-way split path near the end, which would also be fun and could even become a nice little anti-gravity section if they wanted to go that way.
Ghost Valley 2 - Though MK8 does have a ghost-themes track, it does not yet have any of the classic "ghosts above an abandoned boardwalk" tracks, a specific theme that recurs in Mario Kart and is, frankly, badass. Ghost Valley would be a good choice to rep that theme, and I'm picking Ghost Valley 2 specifically - it already proved it worked really well in Mario Kart Wii, and its cheeky little ramp shortcut puts it above Ghost Valley 3 for me.
Vanilla Lake 2 - Vanilla Lake is, frankly, a tiny and overly-simple course with its gimmick of the ice blocks being really obnoxious in SMK. That said, though, it's an iconic stage that could be really cool if they wanted to go the extra mile with it, doing things like changing the ice blocked into small caverns with ice walls you have to smash through, or having a freezing underwater section. Will this happen? Probably not, but I can dream. And also the music is really good.
Mario Kart 64
Kalimari Desert - Mario Kart 64 was my first Mario Kart, and Kalimari Desert is one of its most iconic tracks! It rules here, it rules in 7, and it is... pretty good in Tour, despite you kinda just flying over the train. I definitely want to see this one come back!
Wario Stadium - This may not offer that much aesthetically that Wario Stadium DS doesn't already cover, but goshdamn I just want to trick off of all those hills! Plus this stage is super iconic - owing in no small part to its ultra-shortcut - and has yet to be remastered ever.
DK's Jungle Parkway - Another super cool stage, I'd love to glide over the river at the beginning. If they wanted to go really crazy, they could also add in an underwater section really easily by just flooding part of the jungle or the cave system near the end.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Broken Pier - Now, I mentioned Ghost Valley earlier as a good pick for this aesthetic, but if it were up to me I'd actually go for Broken Pier over it. It has a lot of the same style but with some extra pizzazz and neat little invisible bridges that are really cool.
Sunset Wilds - This stage's aesthetic rules and I want to see the sun set in Mario Kart 8. The only downside here is the extremely-simplified Tour version that we would probably get, but even then I think it would be a decently fun get.
Riverside Park - I'm envisioning the bridge section being replaced with a dip underwater, the rocks blasting from the volcano making large, dramatic explosions and possibly leaving impact craters to trick off of, and the big ramp becoming a cool gliding section over a lava flowing into the river. If they wanted to go super crazy, convert that bit into climbing UP the volcano and gliding over its caldera... there's a lot of potential here, and jungle themed tracks are cool.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Wario Colosseum - How has this not been a retro track yet? This track rules. You can sprinkle antigrav basically anywhere, but even if you don't it's a floating roller coaster converted into a race track. It's cool and would look sick in HD, even accounting for the Booster Pass's less-pretty graphics.
Daisy Cruiser - A super-iconic track with a super-cool gimmick, and it already came back for 7 and was solid there too. The only thing I can say here is I kinda hope they adjust how the pool works, since in 7 it's a little bit too easy to just sneak around the edge of it and it kills the risk/reward of taking the right path around the pool. I also hope they bring back the little life preservers at the end of the track, I like them.
Rainbow Road - My second favorite Rainbow Road in the series, and I think the most effective pick for another "nostalgia" Road. I would LOVE to hear the music redone for 8. The only reason this isn't higher is because of the number one Rainbow Road, which is coming later in the list and I strongly suspect will be added.
Mario Kart DS
Airship Fortress - One of the best stages in the series. A no-brainer pick, especially since it is already in Tour.
Waluigi Pinball - Another no-brainer pick. Everyone ever has already suggested this, but I hope they add anti-gravity to the pinball table itself, just for the aesthetic. It would be fun.
Delfino Square - Just an all-in-all fun stage, zipping through a little plaza and across a bridge? Heck yeah! They could add gliding to the bridge and that would be cool.
Mario Kart Wii
Koopa Cape - The best stage in MKW, outside of maybe Coconut Mall. Great music, great aesthetic, great fun! I'm impartial as to whether the tube at the end has the original MKW approach as a closed tube with obstacles or the 7 approach as an open tube and an underwater segment. If they close the tube, they could maybe make it an anti-gravity section where you can go all around it in 360? Would that be too nauseating? Probably.
Maple Treeway - Another great stage from Wii, and I desperately want to hear the MK8 band play this track's theme.
Toad's Factory - This track? Also rules! The conveyor belts are cool, the music is cool, the aesthetic is cool. Just a cool, cool track. They could add an underwater section to the inside of the last curve as an alternate route to the end.
Mario Kart 7
Rainbow Road - This is what I was talking about earlier - my favorite Rainbow Road in the series. It would also be great to have additional one-lap tracks, especially longer ones as opposed to the dinky Rainbow Road N64.
Wuhu Loop - I'd love to see one of the Wuhu tracks show up, and I think Loop is the more interesting of the two, going through the more "residential" areas of the island and weaving through traffic. It would be really fun to do in 200cc, especially with some of the high-precision shortcuts.
Wario Shipyard - This stage rules, and as far as underwater-focused stages this is definitely the best one in MK7.
Mario Kart Tour
Vancouver Velocity - The best "city" track in Tour by a wide margin, Vancouver Velocity is both really fun to race on and a treat visually. I'd love to see it in HD.
Berlin Byways - Full of neat locales, Berlin Byways would be neat to see done with the driving through subway cars and around water features. Judging by the city tracks already in 8D, we'd probably also get some interesting alternate routes, which is a huge plus - 8D did wonders for even the most boring city track, Tokyo Blur, so I'm excited to see how it handles the more interesting city tracks.
Los Angeles Laps - Another of the more interesting city tracks, I want to see a cool track where you go over the beach in one lap and fly across the baseball stadium in a different lap.
