Dont know why but need to talk. Watching tangled with friend and as my mother was emotional abusive with extreme gaslighting its hard to watch with the morther in there. My friends making excuses for the mother and hyping her makeas ne sick to the stomach. Sorry to rent.
Dude you’re allowed to vent AND rant. Sometimes we need to get shit out of our system before we can deal with it and just telling someone who isn’t going to make you suffer for it can help.
I’ve never actually seen the movie, and that’s mostly because of the stuff you described. I’ve read and been told about it before and it sounds nasty as fuck. Also, from what I’ve heard, it’s almost glorified, like “no you should be grateful someone is making your life so shitty, at least someone cares about you enough to shit all over your everything!” so I can definitely see why it would trigger you like that (and that’s the correct use of trigger, not some sarcastic or hyperbolic innuendo - a specific part of the movie triggered you into thinking about traumatic memories which caused your stress response instincts to react as if those things were happening all over again) and having your friend sitting there going “wHaT’s YoUr PrObLeM mAn?” definitely isn’t going to help at all to say the least.
Unfortunately, abusers like that rely on the fact that everyone thinks “normal” people shouldn’t have a problem with what they do, that their behaviour is justified. Media glossing over those kinds of tactics makes it easier for them to get away with it. They COULD make it clearer in the movie that she is actually the villain, point out that her behaviour is the kind of thing evil people do, but then the villain wouldn’t be humanized and we’d all walk away going “what kind of monster would treat a child in their care like that? I don’t know ANYONE who would be capable of that!” when the sad reality is that 70% of children experience some kind of abuse before they hit adulthood. I think that’s what they were going for in Tangled, humanizing the villain so that people could see that abuse always gets justified with garbage rhetoric that SOUNDS logical to people when they aren’t on the receiving end of it 24/7, but from what I hear they went a little too far with it and made her more sympathetic than her victim.
My advice would be to take it easy, if possible remove yourself from the situation inconspicuously (”Oooh Ive suddenly got a headache coming on, I might need to go lie down for a bit” or something along those lines) so that you can spend some time feeling your feelings without being judged or “corrected” for it, and then when you’ve had a chance to calm down and you’re feeling a bit better you can decide if it’s worth talking about it with your friend now and explaining why what they said upset you or if you’d rather leave it for another day. It’s always a good idea for people to get educated about this stuff but that doesn’t mean it’s YOUR job to educate them. If they follow you on social media, maybe hunt down a post or something where someone else has gone into detail about why the character is abusive and reblog it. You don’t even have to add anything if you don’t want to, although you could tag your friend to make sure they see it if you think that would be a good idea.
Pick your battles. You don’t have to make every single person understand everything about you and why you react to things the way you do. How many people in your life do you understand to that level? I’m guessing not many, if any at all. That’s okay. It’s also okay to decide that a friendship or other connection just isn’t worth salvaging. There doesn’t have to be a big fight about it. At the end of the day, only you can decide what the best course of action is.I’m going to guess you’re fairly young, probably not a child but I don’t get “old enough to voluntarily be a parent” vibes from your ask either. I’m going to guess old enough to have left home possibly but young enough to still feel very raw about the abuse you went through, like you left home less than a decade ago. Bearing that guess in mind, I’m going to tell you that it DOES get better. Sometimes people will come into your life and immediately say something that will make you want to yeet them into the sun, so you’ll decide that the best thing for you to do is either to ignore them and get on with things (if they’re a workmate or something else unavoidable) or just cut them out of your life completely, and sometimes you’ll decide that there is enough other stuff there that you DO like that educating their ignorant arse is worth the hassle. Sometimes you’ll decide the thing you see differently is not worth bickering over so you’ll just let it slide. All of that is entirely up to you. Eventually, if you trust yourself and let yourself cut toxic people out of your life, you get a group of people around you who are worth keeping.
Your reaction is valid. Your emotions are valid, and you deserve to be listened to and have your feelings respected. And you’re welcome to come vent here and get a mini-lecture on why you’re not a bad person any time you like.
