First things first…Garage!

The moment I took possession of my new house, I noticed the garage. I never looked at that when I was in the purchasing stage. The owners were home, their cars were parked in it, there was tons of stuff and it was dark. Olive green everywhere. Mind you, nothing else in the house was olive green, but oh, the garage was. Your garage is the first thing you see when you come home and the last thing you see when you leave. For me, it needs to be organized and no less of a peaceful place than my living room. My new house was all about a fresh start so I decided there was no better place to start with a fresh coat of paint. I decided did some research about decent, but cheap white paint for this project and and the methodology in which to take on the project.

Investment

$50 (2 cans of paint)

5 Hours (clean, prep, paint two coats)

List of supplies

Behr is300 paint - eggshell interior

Roller & paint pan

Paint Sprayer (for edges of ceiling). Seriously, this $50 purchase will save your sanity and oodles of time trimming textured ceilings.

Glad Wrap (cover garage door sensors and tracks)

Steps

Clean floor and around edges with broom

Clean as many spider webs from ceiling and corners of walls

Wipe all walls down. I find the easiest and best tool is flat mop like this one from Bona which I also use on my wood floors. You’re just trying get dust and spider webs off; do a decent job but doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cover garage door sensors and and moving parts (like rollers) of tracks with GladWrap. It’s quick and easy. Cover anything else in the garage you don’t want to be painted with this or painters tape.

Spray edges of ceiling to avoid hand trim work. One of the reasons I really like this paint is that it’s not real thick and works in this sprayer quite well! I usually fill up my sprayer about ⅔ full and then add about 2 tablespoons of water to dilute it and prevent clogs. Trust me, this is SO much easier and better than hand trimming on popcorn!

Fill old nail holes and wall imperfections. My all time go-to is Crawfords. It’s goes on like butter and sands like a dream.

Trim around floor if necessary depending on finish of base in garage. I just painted to the exposed block and left the rest. Roll walls.

Viola! And now we’re ready to move in, fill it with crap and not worry about creepy crawly things. I plan to do a nice garage floor finish at a later date, but the walls are a sufficient start!
