Tokyo-ing!: Three Novellas by Eric Madeen
★★★★☆
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Eric delivers three novellas wrapped up together (About Face, Sobering Love, and Fire Horse) involving the ups and downs of love in Japan. There is a certain angst and heartache as each story unravels. One story involves a man navigating a false sexual assault allegation while juggling the security of his wife and job. Another falls into the lows of alcohol addiction and how the right person can motivate you for the better. And, finally, a man finds the strength to leave a loveless marriage and navigate an unfamiliar dating scene in busy Tokyo.
Quick Takeaway:
The stories are all in 1st person, which is not bad in itself, but it takes a few pages to understand the narrator.
The narrator is unreliable, they give the reader important information later on.
The pace is extremely fast, which can make it feel almost rushed.
The grammar mistakes are relatively minor, but the sentences are often very clunky.
Eric introduces many Japanese customs and phrases and does his best to explain them fluidly within the story.
Dialogue, however, is not translated well within the story.
While he doesn't romanticize harmful things, he does pass off a few things in a very light manner.
A more in-depth review is below the cut!
Tumblr media
Before I go fully into my thoughts, I want to make a small minor correction. These are not 3 novellas as it tries to claim, but rather short stories. Altogether, it could technically be a novella, but individually this is a collection of short stories.
Perhaps this is why I felt as if the stories were all so equally rushed? Each story covers months, trying to detail each life. What led up to the story, what transpired for each character, what relationships they fall in or out of. It is a lot to cover smoothly with only so many words.
One odd thing I noticed was that the further the story advanced, the quality of the writing gradually decreased. Usually, I see the opposite. The writer grows more confident in their writing, or their thoughts are more fluid. Here, it seemed as if in each story the writing became clunkier or less fluid. A likely reason could be that the stories are not presented in the order they were written.
Although, it does well at bringing concepts the average reader might not be familiar with. The POV characters are almost speaking to the audience as if speaking to a diary or a log. This can also create the illusion of an unreliable narrator, as the narrator will deliberately skip over certain events or refuse to elaborate in a way that blurs the lines.
This leads me to my final point. During the first story, as the sexual harassment case is going underway, it is casually dropped that the POV character is married. But don't worry! Several characters reassure him that it is fine and that his wife will understand. And it's kind of swept under from that. There's no worry about his wife being upset he slept with his (college) student or any turmoil with their marriage.
Despite all of this, the stories were each interesting. They definitely carried their own life to them, no matter how short. I felt as if I learned something about Japanese culture or customs through this, which is a bonus. The writing was also (mostly) free of major grammatical mistakes, and the story, no matter how fast, did progress in a way that felt believable for each character.
Due to this collection of stories being so short (not even 100 pages long), I won't be doing a tea or playlist pairing this time around! But, if you wish to read these novellas, please follow this link for your own copy

Final Fantasy Record Keeper 5-Star Magicite Madeen Fight
In the Final Fantasy Record Keeper (FFRK) mobile game, Madeen is the 5-star holy Magicite that’s weak to dark-type attacks. She takes reduced damage from physical attacks.
Nevertheless, I still chose to bring Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII to this fight anyway. Sephi’s a physical dark elemental DPS although he does have some fire relics.
Tumblr media
I already know that Sephiroth can win this fight because that’s exactly what I did in my Japanese Final Fantasy Record Keeper account.
In fact, Seph basically soloed the fight. He was my only DPS. The rest of the chars I brought were just there to buff him, support him, and keep him alive.
So my team for my English FFRK account was basically like that too although slightly different since I don’t have the exact same relics on both accounts.
For starters, I decided to bring Lenna Charlotte Tycoon from Final Fantasy VI as my healer and dancer. I brought Cait Sith from Final Fantasy VII (#ad) to sing the Warrior’s Hymn.
Also brought Barret Wallace from Final Fantasy VII with Wrath and Entrust to provide gauges and cast his Awakened Arcane Soul Break 2 (AASB2), which buffs attack.
Tumblr media
I brought Garland from Final Fantasy I only because he was my dark Chain Soul Break (CSB) holder.
I didn’t have the Rubies to buy the Touched by Darkness (imperils the dark element) ability so I had to make do with using Anima Lenses to buy Garland’s Soul Break that lowers an enemy’s dark resistance.
Managed to win on the first try though it took 41.86 seconds since I ended up messing up a bit when it came to using abilities and Soul Breaks and the like.
It’s fine though. Super pleased that I managed to win with this team.
Conclusion
So what about you? Have you tried fighting against 5-star Magicite Madeen yet? How did it go? What team did you use? What do you think about this fight? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions by leaving a comment below or by reblogging or replying to this post.

I really just love what they did with Pictomancer so much. They even have RGBW and CMYK color mode combos. I had something like that in my own concept back when I was still sure they would never ever do Picto q_q
I'm not 100% sure how the priority between Aetherhue and Sketching is going to go, I feel like there's a potential there to really fuck up your balance if something goes wrong - and also it feels weird that there's just one weapon motif, i feel like there should be two so it's 4-2-1 but that feels like an easy 8.0 addition - but gosh they really did it. I'm so happy.
Slightly sad that Madeen isn't actually a Chimera made of the random shit we draw, but I guess they also haven't said that's not what we're doing there. PCT out here committing large scale blasphemy through defacement of a foreign god :)
A thing I noticed while looking up the difference between Maduin and Madeen is that FF9 Madeen also 'evolves' from a Moogle just like our creature sketch - that whole thing seems to be a Eiko reference (the FF9 Summoner) and given that the skill Madeen Retribution is a likely candidate to be unlocked by the final job quest I'm wondering if an Eiko Stand-In might be going to be part of those...
And listen, I would also love nothing more than to have a serious fine-art Pictomancer instead of a Cartoonist, but hey, I'll take what I can get!!! And if it makes Lore people mad then more power to the devs!! also what's up with people complaining about the job stone colors, they're so cute :o

What is an Eidolon
Final Fantasy IX
Contains spoilers.
At the center of the world of Gaia is a crystal. This crystal was at the beginning of everything. Every living thing breathes trough this crystal, souls are born from it and return to it upon death providing growth to the crystal. From this crystal sprouted the eidolons. Created by storytelling from the people, their existence formed by all the memories in the crystal, the form they take is based on their stories. They serve as powerful guardians for the crystal.
Summoners from the Summoner Tribe of Madain Sari can communicate with eidolons through their horns. They have learned how to summon forth these eidolons in battles. Rushing forth their powerful magic attacks. Each eidolon has it's own element and attack. Such as Ramuh and his Judgement Bolt, a thunder attack, and Shiva and her Diamond Dust, an ice attack.
Eidolons are known to be able to change form; in the story Ramuh takes the form of an old man beside his godlike true form and Madeen lives for a while as a moogle.
In the game there are two playable characters that are summoners, Garnet (or Dagger) and Eiko. Each has their own set of eidolons they are able to summon and they also have white mage abilities.
Eidolons play a big part in the story of Final Fantasy IX. Raving destruction, providing protection and guidance, and called forth in battles to provide powerful attacks. Eidolons are truly an unmissable part of Final Fantasy IX.

Pictomancer's Madeen summon is super cute. Love how prominent the Moogle thing is to the rotation. It'll make VFX mods a little harder, I think, getting it to make sense with the "two points summon Moogle, four summon Madeen" bit.
I do think Pictomancer is as close as we'll get to my "Mog Knight as a magical girl caster" concept, which I'll take

ZEROSTYLE Madeen.
[Entry 20 of the roster, the Celestial Chariot. A newborn Esper whose awakening had been long engineered by Tema, the Guide of Windaria. One of the very few spirits attuned to the pure element of light, the Chariot tirelessly traverses the sky as she follows the sun. Born of untold catastrophe, Madeen was created in the wake of the fall of Windaria as a collective wish of the Moogles that lived there - the Soil Spiral had twisted itself into the form of this hallowed beast, existing only to prevent such a horrific disaster from happening again. Due to the Moogles’ nature as bioconstructs originally devised by the Architect Tema as mobile Soil supply, the race’s sudden genocide resulted in enough of an energy spike to quite literally dream an Esper into existence. Such a feat is unheard of, what with none of the accounts of mortals actively attempting to create guardian spirits of their own ever coming to fruition. Seeing how much of a sacrifice creating Madeen required, however, this is hardly surprising. Though some wandering forces yet attempt to alter their shapes, the era of Esper birth is long past.]

2. “Vorpal detonation, Hyperbolic Orange!”
3. “The kiss of fiery heavens, Solar Gilt!”
“Illuminate! I summon you, Madeen!”
