TASTING NOTES
I was ridiculously uninspired going in. Did my best. Had the added wrinkle of the roller derby afterparty, so I played to them a bit.
My dreams of reordering my crates were wrecked by my surprise, early this week, that it was indeed Third Space Saturday week.
I had a chill set for 1-2am foundered by a drunk* that broke my concentration. Plus, I ran out of records. I don't have a problem with people coming up and saying something, like the person who came up during the ZZ Top record, and asked what mix it was! And having the Treasure Valley Roller Derby after season party in the Space was a blast! It would have been nice to know that beforehand, so I could have loaded up on some sassy and aggresive women for the mix! I apologize. They were a great crowd. They did their thing, had a good time, and I enjoyed playing to them.
Elusive Panda Buck Dave from the Dedicated Servers dropped by and said hello, so did the Real Rah-Keem.
Jules came up and requested "weird shit," like that Clipping jam that I throw in the regular set. So, I’m envisioning the 1-2 am bonus as a set for those of us who work there.
We turned the volume down, and I threw on some down tempo tracks. It's something I want to explore further.
*That drunk doesn’t know how close he came to getting destroyed by my brother in law Jeff. Seriously. He just kept pushing the nonsense, and it totally broke me. Asking me questions about the Mariners gear, and distracting me with questions about Seattle sports, and saying off the wall things like "93rd and Aurora." without elaborating on it. Jeff stepped in to wing man for me, and endured the nonsense. Like I have done many times for DJ IGA back when he occupied the booth. Jeff knows how to hang without demanding to be entertained by a person AT THEIR JOB WHO IS TRYING TO CONCENTRATE!! Well, whatever. I'm going to have to work hard to overcome things like that. Part of the gig.
Next Third Space is 15 July, 2023. I swear I will have some different jams next time.

5 years of Walt Disney’s Masterpiece Star vs. the Forces of Evil!
Thanks to @daronnefcy and her entire team: @cheyennecurtisart, @lynnvwang, @littledigits, @ianwasseluk, @cunch, @brettvaron, @aaronhammersley, @aniramiart, @disneyxd / @disneyanimation, @brianwithanh, @maryamsefati, @giancarlovolpe, Advantage Audio (though the sound design could be far better IMHO), my devote follower and SvTFOE fan @rwinger24, Donovan Cook, and everyone else for an amazing, inspirational piece of Western American animation as unique as Wander Over Yonder (created by @crackmccraigen, who intended to produce SvTFOE for Cartoon Network). I also extended gratitude to @seddm, @corneredforfun, @cutepicsofstar, Scott Forester, @smashupmashups and @starcosigning for the great fan art and observation of this series.
The inspiration that this franchise brought unto me is great graphic detailed cartoon-y character design, a love for “puppeted” animation, and perhaps too much love for an adorable woman who not only exhibited cartoon physics in the visual medium (i.e. catchlights, heart-shaped pupils, lovesick comas), but showed true bravery and love in The Battle for Mewni, of which I wrote before and as listed at the bottom. In my life of appreciating cartoons/animation, I thank God for this special franchise. I remember watching it a little since 2015 until 2017 when I eventually began an obsession about it, leading to the end of Season 4 on May 19th, 2019 A.D.--coincidentally Samurai Jack Season 5 ended on May 20th, 2017 A.D., a similar date.
The character design evolved more to a Gravity Falls type and the animation quickly went from super-detailed puppeted animation to typical traditional animation, and it seems that most every Disney TVA project (i.e. Big City Greens, Amphibia) is going more for just traditional animation and Gravity Falls-esq designs, but SvTFOE started out more like WOY and Paul Rudish’s Mickey Mouse. I look forward to new content in the future--movie, season, short or whatever--and I hope that Disney TVA references this list of creatives who need to be on the future of SvtFOE (on Twitter and Tumblr)!

About Between Certain Death and a Possible Future
Every queer person lives with the trauma of AIDS, and this plays out intergenerationally. Usually we hear about two generations—the first, coming of age in the era of gay liberation, and then watching entire circles of friends die of a mysterious illness as the government did nothing to intervene. And now we hear about younger people growing up with effective treatment and prevention available, unable to comprehend the magnitude of the loss. But there is another generation between these two, one that came of age in the midst of the epidemic with the belief that desire intrinsically led to death, and internalized this trauma as part of becoming queer.
Between Certain Death and a Possible Future: Queer Writing on Growing up with the AIDS Crisis offers crucial stories from this missing generation in AIDS literature and cultural politics. This wide-ranging collection includes 36 personal essays on the ongoing and persistent impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis in queer lives. Here you will find an expansive range of perspectives on a specific generational story—essays that explore and explode conventional wisdom, while also providing a necessary bridge between experiences. These essays respond, with eloquence and incisiveness, to the question: How do we reckon with the trauma that continues to this day, and imagine a way out?
7. IWW’s Organizer Training 101 – November 17, 20, 24 and 27

Favorite older film I saw for the first time in 2019:
Nearing the end of @disneyanimation‘s Star vs. the Forces of Evil (so far), I’d love to shine the light on @cheyennecurtisart (as well as @lynnvwang) for the amazing, graphic character design. This photoset focuses on Star Comes to Earth, the first episode’s scene when Star gets her first wand.
I brought all of this up as I found that Season 1′s art directors, @joshparpan & @justinparpan (as shown above in the SvTFOE episode “School Spirit” with storyboard revisions girl @kat-ketchum), were currently art directors for Cartoon Network’s @victorandvalentino, of which I tweeted. The Parpans gave such a unique design to this @disneyxd original that it stood out, and it doesn’t exactly look like Disney to me. I compare that season’s art direction to the works of @crackmccraigen, regarding character & location design (and creator @daronnefcy worked on Craig’s Wander Over Yonder as a storyboard revisionist), and, speaking of Craig’s works, the Parpans’ art direction on Victor and Valentino resembles the Nick Jennings/Bob Boyle episodes of The Powerpuff Girls (makes sense as creator Diego Molano wrote and storyboarded many episodes).
Like the works of Craig McCracken, certainly the animation of Mercury Filmworks gives to Star and her friends this very goofy, bouncy, lively expression; Mercury also animated Craig McCracken’s Wander Over Yonder and Paul Rudish’ envision of Mickey Mouse. There’s so much detail in the character & prop design, animation, and effects, that SvTFOE visually never looked better than this. I prefer traditional animation (and it does look good in later SvTFOE episodes, particularly the more emotional/serious ones), but SvTFOE eventually helped me see the humorous beauty of model-rigged animation.
Since Season 2, the show no longer feels the same... almost as if it began to look more like Gravity Falls, due mostly to different character designers. I think that, at least for the more comedic episodes, Mercury should still contribute, or at least uncredited lead animation supervisor @littledigits, who animated Wander Over Yonder also at Boulder Media.
The brunette doll in the background here, Hope Hadley, is actually created by Cheyenne Curtis herself, and I’m very interested in knowing about this particular character in respect of Cheyenne Curtis and her work. If Cheyenne ever does a cartoon show (as she tweeted about a potential), then (as I tweeted) perhaps she could do a show about Hope--a potential spin-off of SvTFOE; in that case I hope that she’ll reference an IMDb list I made to help introduce amazing talents like those of Genndy Tartakovsky & more Spümcø to Disney (although Bob Camp storyboarded on Suburban Daredevil) and also bring back the art/storyboard/Mercury team back to Disney’s greatest franchise yet.
As of May 19th, 2019 A.D., the character designers of Season 4′s finale are @aniramiart and Devin Taylor, who began on the Season 2 opener. True to the standard designs (mostly in Sugarcube episodes compared to Rough Draft’s), but it still feels more like Gravity Falls than SvTFOE Season 1.
