“… or they were women like Lizabeth Scott, a kind of blonde Joan Crawford, who weren’t necessarily evil themselves, but whose very presence seemed to invite evil. Every time she appeared, the atmosphere became heavy, and we knew that trouble, big trouble, was ahead.”
/ Feminist theorist Molly Haskell in her book From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies (1987) /
Ash blonde of hair … smoky of eye … raspy of voice (John Kobal once memorably likened it to “a voice that sounded as if it had been buried somewhere deep and was trying to claw its way out”) … Sultry Lizabeth Scott (née Emma Matzo, 29 September 1922 - 31 January 2015) died on this day. For decades Scott was mostly uncelebrated (and bedeviled by comparisons to the more famous Lauren Bacall) but more recently she’s been reappraised as one of the most haunting and enigmatic of forties and fifties actresses and an essential figure in film noir. So far, I’ve screened three of Scott’s movies at my monthly Lobotomy Room film club (Desert Fury (1947), Pitfall (1948) and Too Late for Tears (1949)) and it’s been gratifying to see how audiences respond to her. For anyone curious about the famously secretive Scott, the 2022 memoir Lunch with Lizabeth - screenwriter, author, producer and filmmaker Todd Hughes’ account of his friendship with her - is required reading. Pictured: glamour shot of Scott in Dead Reckoning (1947).

Lizabeth and Her Strange Family (RADIODUST FAMILY)
EPISODE 1, THE DINNER
3 characters are own by Vivzepop
2 Characters are own by me
(SONGS USED WERE: BREAKAWAY BY KELLY CLARKSON AND VACAY TO BONETOWN FROM HELLUVA BOSS)
*Starting off at a dining table at the hotel, two red deer-like demons and a White/Pink Spider were at the table eating Dinner*
Angel Dust: Lizi, You haven't touched your pasta yet. What's wrong?
Lizabeth: I got into a fight...
Alastor: YOU WHAT?
Angel Dust: Calm down sweetie, she's only thirteen.
Alastor: But she shouldn't be getting into fights at school!
Angel Dust: Honey what was the fight about?
Lizabeth: Ginzina, is always picking on me and today she pushed me in hallway, on my way to my lunch table, she made me drop my food and I got up and SMACKED HER-
Angel Dust: No Ma'm! You should tell a teacher first!
Lizabeth: I've BEEN telling them!
Alastor: Then Ignore it Lizabeth...
Lizabeth: I HAVE BEEN DAD!
Alastor: YOU DON'T SCREAM AT YOUR FATHER!
Lizabeth: THEN FUCKING LISTEN TO ME!
Angel Dust: Al hon-
Alastor: THAT'S IT! GO TO YOUR ROOM, GIVE ME YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER AND VIDEO GAMES, YOU ARE GROUNDED FROM THEM FOR A WEEK AND IF YOU KEEP THIS ATTITUDE UP IT WILL BE TWO WEEKS, GOT IT?
Lizabeth: FINE! *runs up to her room crying, Grabs everything and throws it down the stairs*
Angel Dust: Lizi Don't throw it all down the stairs.
Lizabeth: UGH! LEAVE ME ALONE! *Slams the door*
Angel Dust: *Fuming with Anger* ALASTOR!!!
Alastor: What? She NEEDS to be disciplined! She has been going on with this bratty attitude for way too long! She has to pay the price!
Angel Dust: Yeah, but you don't have to SCREAM at her!!! If you keep on hurting my daughter, we will cut the cord.
*Back in Lizabeth's room*
Lizabeth: *Singing*
(Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da-da-da)
Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray
Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed (I would pray)
I could breakaway
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes 'til I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
(Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da
Da-da-da, un, da-da-da-da)
Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
I won't forget all the ones that I love
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me, but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway
I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Breakaway
Breakaway
*Lizabeth sees something odd out the window*
Lizabeth: Is that a portal? To the? *Gasps* *Looks around* *Opens the window and jumps out of the window* Oh my god! *Goes into the portal*
*Back inside the house in the living room*
Alastor: *Drinking a little bit of beer*
Angel Dust: Al! You better not be getting wasted again!
Alastor: Ugh...I can't do anything...
Angel Dust: Hey baby?
Alastor: What? *Switching through the TV* Ughhhh Nothing good is on.
Angel Dust: Wanna have some fun tonight? *Walks out in cute pink sexy outfit*
Alastor: *looks at him and drools* *blushes* Uhhhhh Yeah!
*Back in the Human world*
Lizabeth: *Changes herself from her deer-demon form to a human form* Woah...I can do this? *walks out to see a concert going on*

Alastor: NO TIME FOR EXPLANATION. NOW GO UP TO YOUR ROOM AND YOU WILL NOT COME OUT FOR THIRTY MINUTES, YOUR DEVICES ARE NOW TAKEN FOR A MONTH, AND YOU WILL NOT SEE YOUR FRIENDS FOR TWO WEEKS.
Lizabeth: Yes sir...*goes up to her room*
Angel and Alastor: *fighting again*
Lizabeth: *Lies on her bed and her secret phone buzzes* Hm? *looks at her phone to see a message from Alena, she smiles as she goes to sleep*

Burt Lancaster got his contract with Hal B. Wallis at Paramount on the basis of a test directed by Byron Haskin with Wendell Corey and Lizabeth Scott for Desert Fury. Lucky for him, the film was not ready to shoot for another six months and he was able to fit in Robert Siodmak’s The Killers(1946)  for producer Mark Hallinger at Universal beforehand. Desert Fury started shooting two weeks before the release of The Killers but there were already whisperings of Lancaster as a big new star, and the whisperings were so loud that Hallinger gave him first billing and a big publicity build-up rather than the little ‘and introducing….’ title at the end of the credits that was then typical, and is indeed the billing offered Wendell Corey in Desert Fury as you can see in the poster above. Before Desert Fury started shooting, Hal Wallis knew he had a big fat star on his hands and that his part had to be beefed up so as to capitalise on it.
By the time the film was released on September 24th, 1947,, Burt Lancaster was the biggest star in the film. The Killers hit screens on the 29th of August 1946. As Kate Buford writes, Ít was an extraordinary debut for a complete unknown. Overnight he was a star with a meteoric rise ¨faster than Gable´s, Garbo´s or Lana Turner,¨as Cosmopolitan said years later (Buford, loc 1260). In New York the movie, ‘played twenty-four hours a day at the Winter Garden theatre, ‘where over 120,000 picture-goers filled the 1,300 seat theatre in the first two weeks, figures Variety called “unbelievably sensational.”‘ Brute Force was the fourth film Lancaster made, after I Walk Alone, but it was the second to be released, on June 30th 1947. According to Kate Buford, it too ‘set set first-week records at movie houses across the country’ (loc 1412).
Lancaster’s status as a star is reflected in the lobby card and poster above, where in spite of being billed third, what´s being sold is what Burt Lancaster already represented, the publicity materials giving a false impression that he is much more central to the narrative than is in fact the case. His image dominates in both, and even the tag lines are attributed to him: ‘I got a memory for faces…killer´s faces…Get away from my girl…and get going’, is the tagline in the lobby card. The text on the poster reads, ´Two men wanted her love…the third wanted her life.
In the ad below, he´s billed second, as ´the sensation of The Killers, Dynamite with the fuse lit’
Tumblr media
When trying to recapture a past moment in relation to cinema, it´s often useful to look at trailers and other paratextual publicity materials. Trailers hold and try to disseminate the film´s promise to viewers. Of course, its purpose is to sell, to dramatise its attractions so that viewers will go see it. And of course, they often lie, dramatising not what is but what they hope will sell. That said, those promises, lies and hopes are often very revealing.
youtube
As you can see above, the trailer is selling melodrama — violent passions — in a magnificent natural setting filmed in Technicolor. Burt Lancaster’s name is only mentioned 39 second into the 1.41 trailer, after Lizabeth Scott with her strangeness and her defiance of convention and after John Hodiak with his secrets and coiled snakeyness. And Lancaster’s introduced as ‘hammer fisted’ Tom Hanson, erroneously giving the impression that this will be an action film. But note too that by the end of the trailer, Lancaster is given top billing.
According to Kate Buford, in Burt Lancaster: An American Life, Lancaster thought ‘Desert Fury would not have lunched anybody’, later ‘dismissing it as having ‘starred a station wagon’ (loc 1157). The film is really a series of triangles: Eddie (John Hodiak) and Tom (Burt Lancaster) are both in love with Paula (Lizabeth Scott), Fritzy (Mary Astor) has already had an affair with Tom who is currently pursuing an affair with her daughter Paula, Paula and Johnny (Wendell Corey) are both in love with Eddie etc. I have made a not-quite-video essay that nonetheless well illustrates the Johnny-Eddie-Paula triangle, surely one of the queerest of the classic period, which can be seen here:
Tom is really a fifth wheel in the narrative. But by the time the film started shooting, Burt Lancaster was already the biggest star in it.  His part was beefed up to take his new status into account, scenes were added, According to Gary Fishgall, the film was based on a 1945 novel, Desert Town by Ramona Stewart, and ‘ Lancaster’s role was an amalgam of two of the novel’s characters: the embittered, sadistic deputy sheriff, Tom Hansen, and a likeable highway patrolman named Luke Sheridan. Neither character was romantically linked to Paula (p.55). But in the film, he ends up with Lizabeth Scott at the end. All these additions probably contributed to the film seeming so structurally disjointed.
In Desert Fury Tom, a former rodeo rider, just hangs around waiting for Paula to get wise to Eddie, leaving her enough rope to act freely, as he does with colts when taming them, but not enough so that she hangs herself, or so he thinks. Really, he’s extraneous. He gets to walk into the sunset with Paula at the end of the film but the film really ends once Paula and Fritzy kiss, on the lips. He certainly doesn’t get much to do during it, except for a couple of great scenes where Fritzy tries to buy him into marrying her daughter (above) and another bit of banter when she thinks he’s come to accept her offer (below). Mary Astor steals both scenes. In fact she steals everything. Every time she appears, her wit, weariness, intelligence, the intensity of her love for her daughter — she lifts the film to a level it probably doesn’t deserve to be in. But Lancaster is good. These are the only scenes in the film where he looks like he’s enjoying himself.
Tom is the closest the film has to a ´normal character’. Indeed, aside from the character he plays in All My Sons (1948) this is the closest he’d come to such a type during the whole of his period in film noir in the late 40s and which includes all of his films up to The Flame and the Arrow in 1950. Even in Variety Girl, which is an all-star comedy where he and Lizabeth Scott spoof  the hardboiled characters they’re associated with, the surprise is that they’ve already created personas to spoof in such a short time (see below).
According to Fishgall, ‘Lancaster –billed third before the film’s title — acquitted himself well in the essentially thankless other man’ role. Still, if Desert Fury had marked his screen debut as originally planned, it is unlikely that he would have achieved stardom quite so quickly. Not only did the film lack the stylish impact of The Killers, but so did the actor. Without the smouldering intensity of the Swede and his first pictures’ moody black and white photography, he appeared to be more of a regular fellow, and guy-next-door types rarely become overnight sensations’ (p. 67).
In Desert Fury we’re told that unlike the drugstore cowboys who are now criticising him, Tom used to be the best rodeo rider there was but a while back, whilst wrestling a steer, he got thrown off and is now all busted up inside. Being ‘busted up inside’ is what all the characters Burt Lancaster plays in the late ’40s have in common. He thinks of returning to the rodeo all the time but knows he can never be as good. He used to be a champ, now all he can hope for is to be second best. He knows he ‘ain’t got what it takes anymore’. He’s in love with Paula and she knows it. But she doesn’t know what she wants. He think he does: ‘you’re looking for what I used to get when I rode in the rodeo.  The kick of having people say “that’s a mighty special person” I’d like to get that kick again. Maybe I can get it with just one person saying it’. He will, but he’ll have to wait until the end of the movie.
Tumblr media
But even in this,  Lancaster doesn´t play entirely nicey-poo, true-blue, throughout, and his Tom is given moments of wanton bullying and cruelty where he gets to abuse Eddie just because he’s a cop and wants to. And it´s interesting that it´s that moment, which jives so well with the ´brute force´Lancaster was already known for, and which would attach itself to his persona for many a year, that is the one chosen for the trailer.
According to Robyn Karney, in Burt Lancaster: A Singular Man, ‘As the straightforward moral law officer in a small Arizona town who rescues the object of his affections from the dangerous clutches of a murderous professional gambler, Burt had little to do other than look strong, handsome and reliable. Despite Wallis’ much vaunted rewrites, the role of the Sheriff Tom Hanson remained stubbornly secondary and uninteresting, with the limelight focused on John Hodiak as the villain, fellow contract players Elizabeth Scott and Wendell Corey’ (p.31).
I mainly agree with Robyn Karney except for four points, two textual and stated above: the first is that even in this Lancaster is playing a failure, someone once a somebody that people talked about but now all busted up inside; the second is that that element of being ´busted up inside´leads to a longing that gets displaced onto Paula. If the rodeo is what made feel alive and gave him a reason to live before his accident, now it´s Paula, and the idea that she might also be an unobtainable goal  leads to his outbursts of unprovoked violence towards the rival for his affections, Eddie (John Hodiak).
The other two points of interest are extra textual. Desert Fury is gloriously filmed by Charles Lang. A few years later, in Rope of Fury, Lang would film Lancaster as a beauty queen: eyelashes, shadows and smoke, lips and hair (see below):
Tumblr media
Here, even with his pre-stardom teeth and his bird´s nest of a hairdo, Lancaster sets the prototype for the Malboro Man:
Tumblr media
He looks good in technicolour, and Lang brings out the blue of his eyes:
More importantly, the film visualises him, for the first time, as Wester Hero, a genre that would become a mainstay of his career from Vengeance Valley (1951) right through Ulzana´s Raid (1972) and even onto Cattle Annie and Little Britches (1981):
Tumblr media
Desert Fury was not well reviewed. According to the Daily Herald ‘The acting is first-class. But except for Mr. Lancaster as a speed cop, the characters in the Arizona town with their lavish clothes and luxury roadsters, are contemptible to the point of being more than slightly nauseating’ (cited in Hunter p. 27),
The Monthly Film Bulletin labelled the film a western melodrama, claiming, surprisingly, that ‘The vivid technicolor and grand stretches of burning Arizona desert give a certain air of reality to the film’. Hard for us to see this thrillingly melodramatic film, lurid, in every aspect, evaluated in the light of realism. The MFB continued with, ´This reality is however counteracted by the way in which the sharply defined, but extremely unnatural characters act. Everything is over dramatised, and the title is a mystery in that the desert is comparatively peaceful compared with the way the human beings behaved…Lizabeth Scott is suitably beautiful as Paula and Burt Lancaster suitably tough as Tom. (Jan 1, 1947, p. 139)
Thus, we can see that on the evidence above, the film was badly reviewed, Time magazine going so far as to call it, ‘impossible to take with a straight face’ (Buford, loc1293). But Burt Lancaster´s performance was either exempted from the criticism or its faults where attributed to the film rather than to himself. More importantly still, the film was a hit, Burt Lancaster´s third in a row. Finally, as I´ve discussed elsewhere, the film is now considered by many a kind of camp classic,  a leading example of noir in technicolor as well as arguably the gayest film ever produced in the classic period.

VAMPIRES !    It was the thing that she would always be but the twins?  They had the chance to be HUMAN with lives of children and growing old.   Hope longs for the days when growing old was on her to do list but that doesn’t happen.  It was just a PIPE DREAM that would never be. A cigarette between fingers flicking the ash to the ground the FULL tribrid stands outside the grounds behind an old bar that smells of vomit and stale alcohol.  It was JUST outside of the town’s border.  There is a dead body at her feet of a man that had been innocent.  Came to see what she was doing behind the bar only to become her lunch.  Blood still on her chin with no move to wipe it away.  Hope could be a messy eater or she could be clean about it.       ❝   You would be back here in a WEEK beggin for Josie to forgive ya for leaving.   ❞
Tumblr media
The blonde coming out of the bar had gotten hit with the typical MONSTER shit that she has heard since this whole thing began three weeks ago.  ALARIC WANTS HER TO BE REMORSEFUL but she isn’t.  No one has ever been to her for all they had put her through so why should a mere human get more respect?  One last drag   (  air blown out   )    and it is thrown to the ground,  a heeled boot pushing down to squash it.                    ❝   Lizabeth,  I hardly count HERETICISM as a MONSTER quality. . .   ❞
A hand goes through red curls as she moves to get closer to the blonde a smile with teeth showing then.  WHY WAS LITTLE MISS PERFECT OUT HERE?   Shouldn’t she be doing some college assignment?  Kissing the ground someone walks on that is less than her?  Hope wants to know more of what draws the other in for sure.  Head tilts to the side as Hope threatens to invade the personal space of a blonde.                 ❝   But maybe you are just as FUCKED as I am. What kinda girl sees                                 death in the face and doesn’t run for the hills?   ❞

The 12 months Inequality Grew to become Much less Seen, and Extra Seen Than Ever This 12 months, many People left the locations the place it was nonetheless attainable to come across each other. White-collar employees stopped going downtown, previous homeless encampments and to lunch counters with minimum-wage workers. The well-off stopped using public transit, the place in some cities they as soon as sat alongside commuting college students and custodial employees. Diners stopped consuming in eating places, the place their suggestions fashioned the wages of the individuals who served them. People additionally stopped broadly sharing libraries, film theaters, practice stations and public faculty school rooms, the areas that also created widespread expertise in more and more unequal communities. Even the D.M.V., with its cross-section of life in a single room, wasn’t that anymore. As a substitute, individuals who may afford it retreated into smaller, safer worlds through the pandemic. And that has made it more durable to see all of the inequality that worsened this 12 months: the unemployment that soared even because the inventory market did, the eviction threats that grew as residence costs hit new highs. In one other manner, nevertheless, the inequality already current within the economic system turned extra seen than ever this 12 months. With supply companies, restaurant couriers and private purchasing apps, low-wage employees had been now — in far bigger numbers — coming proper to the doorstep of the well-off. Standing there in masks, their financial precarity was uncovered. “What these apps do is power individuals who reside steady lives to confront the instability of working-class lives — very immediately and for their very own profit,” mentioned Louis Hyman, an financial historian at Cornell. “Earlier than these apps, it was straightforward to fake that wasn’t actually taking place,” he mentioned of the yawning gaps within the economic system. “There have been methods to think about these supply individuals weren’t emblematic of something.” We by no means thought an excessive amount of concerning the Domino’s supply drivers, he mentioned. They had been simply highschool youngsters. Till, by the 2000s, they weren’t. Historians are watching this second with a fraught query: Will there emerge a broader demand for structural reforms to deal with inequality, or an additional retreat by the prosperous from its issues? Recessions, they are saying, can make clear the place the economic system is heading. The businesses and industries that prosper throughout them typically anticipate how society will change within the years to come back. The promoting trade grew through the Nice Despair, as corporations fought for scarce client {dollars} and bought escapism in alcohol, tobacco and leisure. The advert trade anticipated the American client tradition of the postwar period. Accounting corporations and banks boomed, too, out of the New Deal-era regulation that got here from the Despair. Later, the recession of the early Nineties presaged the downsizing and outsourcing of even middle-class jobs, and the rise of consulting corporations to handle that shift. And out of the wreckage of the foreclosures disaster, institutional traders foresaw a brand new marketplace for single-family rental houses. Right now, the businesses which might be thriving — some with eye-popping I.P.O.s — have harnessed each the actual circumstances of social distancing and the longer-term traits of a society pulling aside. These corporations allow you to carry a gathering with out visiting the workplace, to purchase a house with out glad-handing an actual property agent, to eat restaurant meals with out getting into a restaurant, to take pleasure in leisure with out theaters, to buy with out retail. They “remind us of a protracted historic strategy of social fragmentation that’s now extra apparent than ever,” mentioned David Kennedy, a Stanford historian who has written extensively concerning the Nice Despair. “It appears to me that what they reveal is how straightforward it’s, and the way massive a market there’s, in our society for the sorts of companies that preserve us distanced from each other.” Up to date  Dec. 28, 2020, 11:07 a.m. ET There’s a pressure, although, between the isolation of the well-off and the seen dependence of lots of their conveniences on low-wage labor. Professor Kennedy is deeply pessimistic that actual change will emerge from it. The Nice Despair created ache extra broadly throughout the economic system and lasted a decade, opening a bigger political window for reform. “It’s been a really very long time since individuals throughout the earnings spectrum felt that performing within the collective curiosity was going to be extra useful than performing in particular person pursuits,” mentioned Margaret O’Mara, a historian on the College of Washington. In Seattle round her, individuals had been already beginning to broach these questions earlier than the pandemic. Younger tech employees had been enthusiastic early adopters of meals supply companies and apps like Uber and Lyft. And there was already a transparent dissonance, she mentioned, between the expertise of gig employees and the spiraling housing costs and gleaming new development tied to Seattle’s tech increase. That was earlier than it turned awkwardly clear that the gig employees had been now risking their well being, too. Again within the spring, the Harvard historian Lizabeth Cohen wrote an article for The Atlantic expressing hope that, as within the New Deal period, America may reply to financial calamity by remodeling itself right into a extra equitable society. It was early within the pandemic, when everybody was nonetheless celebrating the economic system’s new heroes: the grocery retailer clerks, supply employees, janitors and frontline nurses. That was earlier than the pandemic turned absolutely politicized, earlier than the tech I.P.O.s and earlier than Congress allowed unemployment support to run out. Because the pandemic has dragged on, and because the hole has widened in how People expertise it, Professor Cohen has grown much less certain that classes of empathy and unity from the Nice Despair can apply as we speak. We’re farther aside now than even six months in the past, not to mention earlier than the pandemic. “Simply take into consideration the pathways and the place they took you — you went in and received espresso in a spot the place you noticed individuals who had been being paid by the hour, not by the month,” Professor Cohen mentioned. These small moments vanished. Throughout the middle-class neighborhoods and second-home retreats the place distant employees withdrew, there have been no homeless individuals on the sidewalk. “It appears there have been fewer and fewer of these interactions, however they actually had been necessary for simply increasing the social world you reside in,” she mentioned. “Possibly that’s the scariest dimension of this. The alternatives to work together with people who find themselves not like your self have shrunk.” Professor Hyman, nevertheless, continues to be optimistic, declaring that there’s one thing highly effective in how seen inequality turns into when a employee drops off a buyer’s Entire Meals order. “That’s partially what made the economic economic system a greater economic system: photos of kids working in factories, the determined poor of the Thirties,” he mentioned. “Visibility is an efficient factor, that persons are pressured to confront it.” His argument isn’t that buyers ought to really feel dangerous about ordering takeout, or having their groceries delivered. It’s not the companies which might be the issue, he mentioned; it’s the insecurity and low wages that include doing that work in an economic system that provides few alternatives to construct wealth and restricted entry to advantages. Manufacturing unit work wasn’t all that nice, both. What we romanticize about it are the livable wages and advantages it offered for a time. “The story of the Thirties just isn’t making the roles of the Twenties work higher,” he mentioned. “It’s creating new techniques for the economic work power.” After the pandemic, it’s doubtless some restaurant and retail jobs received’t come again. And those that did them might be a part of the rising ranks of logistics employees: individuals who transfer issues round warehouses, or transfer passengers round cities, or transfer packages and takeout round your neighborhood. That may be a very totally different type of work power, in want of latest techniques. Supply hyperlink #Inequality #Visible #Year

Silent Moon ep 1 “Evening’s Encounter”
Fade In:
INT. DARKENED APARTMENT— NIGHT
PETRA SIGGINS, a 37 year old woman with bobbed, black hair, and proud, cold, gray eyes lays on the ground for presumably the first time in her life in fear. Someone in a dark green hoodie stands over her.
PETRA
No…
The hooded figure comes closer to her, each step making her inch backwards until she hits the wall.
Fade outside of the apartment where Petra’s screams rise into the night air.
INT. DARKENED APARTMENT— DAY
The apartment is filled with officers— some taking photos of the crime scene, others taking finger prints from surfaces, others still taking samples of the blood splattered all about the room. The chief— a lorkieshin with black hair and pale skin— steps through the front door and into the living room. This man is TSUGAMI BELROT.
TSUGAMI
(To himself)
Jeez, someone had a good time…
Tsugami scans the apartment taking in the blood and the markings on the wall— too covered with blood to clearly see what they say— before his attention focuses on the victim and his most trusted partner, a Mukev with brown eyes and a shaved head named ROGAN WILT who looks up and gives him a grim smile.
ROGAN
Chief Tsugami, welcome to the party.
TSUGAMI
Clearly it was really good time… (nods to the body bag) The victim?
Rogan nods, stands, and peels off his gloves.
ROGAN
(sighs) Petra Seggins. Age 37. A Lume and a professor at Rikrhim University.
Tsugami nods.
TSUGAMI
Looks like our newest playmate
for our recent troublemaker.
ROGAN
Not just her.
Rogan motions to one of the younger officers with short, brown hair and blue eyes (Tyler Vise) who hurries over and hands him a notebook. Rogan takes it and flips a couple pages in.
ROGAN (CONT’D)
Lizabeth Warran, age 22. A student at Rikrhim University.
TSUGAMI
A student was here?
ROGAN
Well, not here…
TSUGAMI
Spit it out, Rogan.
Rogan sighs.
ROGAN
Well, it would seem the student was nearby and saw our man exit the apartment. He killed her too.
TSUGAMI
Our only witness?
ROGAN
Well, our other witness was Andy… he died trying to catch him.
TSUGAMI
Shit.
Tsugami turns and heads out the door.
TSUGAMI
Tyler.
TYLER
Yes, sir.
TSUGAMI
Make sure you compile everything we dig up in this place, I want it on my desk tonight.
TYLER
Yes!
TSUGAMI
Rogan, we’re leaving.
ROGAN
Where to?
TSUGAMI
We have a university to visit.
Int. Paranormal Research Facility (Old Chemistry Lab)— day
A girl with long, braided, black hair and red, framed glasses with an apathetic expression sits at a desktop. This emotionless piece of work is NICOLE SWANSON. Nicole sighs.
NICOLE
It’s about time she gets here.
A cat Lorkiershin with short, black hair and green eyes runs into the room. She has a black ribbon tied around her neck adding to her overall cat-likeness. She has black ears and a black tail. This is Ribbon. Ribbon holds up a piece of paper.
NICOLE
What took you?
RIBBON
Sorry Nicole, had to loose an extra tail.
NICOLE:
I told you there would be trouble on the way back…
RIBBON
Sorry… (holds up the paper) but, look! I got the numbers!
Nicole takes the paper and adjusts her glasses as she studies its contents. Finally she puts it aside.
NICOLE
Good job, Ribbon! Now.
(Stands up and grabs her bag)
Let’s get going.
RIBBON
You figured out which number it is already?!
Nicole throws Ribbon her schoolbag.
NICOLE
No. Because someone was late getting back,
we’re going to be late for class.
RIBBON
Aw.
Int. Class 1-32- day
A plump, balding man stands at the podium with Tsugami and Rogan. This man is the dean of Rimrhim University, Charles Dickens.
CHARLES
And so, I will now turn the podium to—
Nicole and Ribbon open the door and stumble through it, panting.
NICOLE
I told you not to run passed them, you fool!
RIBBON
Nya…
CHARLES
(Clears his throat)
You may take your seats, ladies.
Nicole and Ribbon move to their seats in the back. Tsugami takes the spot behind the podium.
TSUGAMI
I am Tsugami Belrot, Chief of City Outpost.
This is Rogan Wilst.
FEMALE STUDENT 1
He’s a vork!
FEMALE STUDENT 2
So hot!
NICOLE
Vork… a race classified by their black cornea
and golden iris. Interesting…
RIBBON
Yeah.
Ribbon’s ears twitch and she stares at something shimmering next to Tsugami.
TSUGAMI
As I’m sure you’re all aware by now, there’s been a series of murders recently. I am here to inform you that your professor, Petra Seggins has been one of the victims.
NICOLE
(mutters) and Lizzy… (To Ribbon) Has she become a Catros?
Ribbon stares at the shimmer becoming clearer at the podium.
NICOLE
Ribbon?
RIBBON
A Halos…
NICOLE
What?
An officer with angel blond hair and blue eyes stands next to Tsugami trying to get his attention. This is Andy Helm. Ribbon’s right ear twitches.
TSUGAMI
If any of you have information that could help our investigation, please contact this number.
Rogan begins to write a number on the board, after writing about five digits, a chair clatters attracting his attention. Ribbon walks down the stairs and stands before Tsugami at the podium and watches Andy for a moment.
ANDY
Chief Tsugami! Hey c’mon! I need to tell you something! Why can’t you listen to me?
Andy’s form becomes darker.
ANDY
I just want you to know I have the report you asked for…
TSUGAMI
Something wrong?
Ribbon is silent as she looks at Andy.
CHARLES
Miss Ribbon, this is not—
Tsugami stops him.
RIBBON
Andy wants to tell you something…
CHARLES
Miss Ribbon—
Tsugami interrupts him.
TSUGAMI
And what does Andy want to tell me?
Andy perks up and looks at Ribbon.
ANDY
Can you hear me?
Ribbon nods. Andy smiles and grasps Ribbon’s shoulder.
ANDY
Great! Please, tell the Chief…
RIBBON
He wants to inform you that he has sent you his report. It’s in your email, and that it was a pleasure to serve along side you, Chief Tsugami. He has always looked up to you and is happy that he could die as a man. Are you proud of him?
ROGAN
Andy…
TSUGAMI
He was a good officer and a brave man.
Andy smiles and turns back to Ribbon.
ANDY
Thank you.
Andy fades away into a shimmering light.
TSUGAMI
How exactly do you know about—?
Nicole appears behind Ribbon and pulls her ear.
RIBBON
Ow! Ow, ow, ow! My ear!
NICOLE
Jeez! There’s more appropriate ways to help spirits. How many times have I told you… (huffs and turns to Tsugami and Rogan) Sorry about this, my cat is very drawn to the unseen.
CHARLES
That does not excuse—
NICOLE
No. Of course not. We’ll excuse ourselves, Mr Dickens!
Nicole turns to leave and opens the door, still dragging Ribbon by her ear.
RIBBON
Ow! Nicole..! My ear! You’re hurting it!
The door slams shut on the way out. Rogan approaches Tsugami.
ROGAN
Huh.
TSUGAMI
What do you think?
ROGAN
About those two?
TSUGAMI
What else do you think I’m talking about?
ROGAN
I think that girl might be a force to be reckoned with, in many ways.
TSUGAMI
That’s an understatement…
ROGAN
But..?
TSUGAMI
What about the Lorkiershin?
ROGAN
I have to say, I haven’t seen one since the Great War. They’ve nearly all been wiped out. From what I heard, they do have amazing instincts.
TSUGAMI
Instincts enough to know about a report that’s supposed to be classified?
ROGAN
Hey. Your guess is as good as mine.
CHARLES
Although, I’d hate to admit it… Those two have a real track record of knowing things no one else could.
ROGAN
What do you mean?
CHARLES
Well…
Ext. Green; Rikrhim University- day
Nicole and Ribbon sit under an oak tree eating lunch. Ribbon rubs her ear. Nicole puts down her sandwich and reads the paper from earlier.
RIBBON
Jeez! Hold back a little!
NICOLE
I see no reason to.
RIBBON
Because I’m your best friend.
NICOLE
You’re a terrible actor.
Ribbon sniffles. Nicole sighs and pets her head. Ribbon grins and leans into her hand, purring happily. Nicole stops petting her.
NICOLE
You’re still in trouble.
Ribbon falls onto her lap and paws at Nicole’s braid, purring loudly. Nicole sighs, and strokes her ears gently.
NICOLE
You’re devious…
Ribbon laughs. Tsugami and Rogan stand over them, startling her.
NICOLE
Can I help you?
ROGAN
May we sit down?
NICOLE
You’re blocking the sun.
TSUGAMI
Seriously?
Ribbon laughs, sitting up from Nicole’s lap.
RIBBON
That’s Nicole for: “Hurry up and sit down”.
ROGAN
Oh? Guess we’ll do that.
Rogan and Tsugami sit down. Ribbon stares at Tsugami.
TSUGAMI
Something wrong?
Ribbon quickly looks away.
RIBBON
Sorry! It’s just I was happy he’s moved on.
ROGAN
Who?
NICOLE
Get to the point. You’re being a nuisance.
RIBBON
Nicole…
TSUGAMI
Someone with a mindset I can agree with, good. This’ll save some time. I want to know—
NICOLE
You want to know how Ribbon knew about the officer and the report.
ROGAN
Yes. That document was highly classified and extremely problematic in the wrong hands.
NICOLE
If Ribbon really did get that document through underhanded means and if she really was going to blackmail you with it why would she do it face to face with a full audience?
TSUGAMI
Mostly because she seems like a natural dimwit.
RIBBON
Huh?
ROGAN
Tsugami…
NICOLE
(sighs) Yeah, well, I can’t really disagree with that…
RIBBON
Hey! You guys are mean! I just wanted Andy to move on!
TSUGAMI
How did you know he died?
RIBBON
Well, he was standing right beside you. I may be stupid, but at least I’m not blind or deaf, like some people.
Rogan glances around and Nicole sighs.
NICOLE
He’s not going to be there anymore.
Rogan looks surprised.
NICOLE
Ribbon did just say he found the afterlife.
ROGAN
The afterlife?
TSUGAMI
Spirits? Do you think we’re stupid?
RIBBON
No.
NICOLE
I do.
RIBBON
Nicole!
NICOLE
Listen, it’s not our fault if you don’t believe us.
ROGAN
Listen, this kind of thing will need an investigation. Maybe you should—
Nicole stands.
NICOLE
There’s no reason to avoid an investigation of a crime we’re not guilty of, yes? (To Ribbon) Let’s go.
Ribbon stands.
RIBBON
Right… (To Tsugami and Rogan) Have a nice day!
Ribbon and Nicole leave. Tsugami and Rogan watch them go.
ROGAN
She’s a real piece of work.
TSUGAMI
She’s a bitch.
Rogan laughs.
ROGAN
It’s not everyday someone can get the better of you.
Tsugami sighs.
ROGAN
What’d you think about the Lorkiershin?
TSUGAMI
She’s an idiot.
ROGAN
But..?
TSUGAMI
She doesn’t seem to be a liar.
ROGAN
Yeah, I don’t think she has the ability to lie.
TSUGAMI
Exactly.
ROGAN
I do find it strange though… Why just “Ribbon”? No last name?
TSUGAMI
It’s interesting all right.
Tsugami and Rogan watch Ribbon and Nicole avoid a group of boys. The girls hurry around the corner and the boys follow them.
ROGAN
Looks like they have some friends.
TSUGAMI
Hmph! And she didn’t invite us?
ROGAN
It’s not too late.
Int. Paranormal Research Facility (Old Chem. Lab)— day
Ribbon and Nicole enter the lab and collapse, panting hard.
NICOLE
Jeez, why is all this happening to us today?
RIBBON
What do we do if they actually find us here?
Nicole stands and gets a nearby metal pole.
RIBBON
Nicole?
NICOLE
Take out your claws.
RIBBO:
Eh?? But, but—
NICOLE
It’s self defense, Ribbon. We can’t let them walk all over us forever. Especially if they come here!
RIBBON
Yeah, but—
Ribbon hears footsteps approaching and runs to Nicole’s side taking out some stirring spoons. The footsteps stop outside the door.
NICOLE
Steady. Ready…
The door opens and Tsugami and Rogan a step inside. A bunch of spoon whiz passed their faces. Rogan and Tsugami look behind them and find that the spoons have all gone through the wall behind them.
ROGAN
What the fuck?!
Nicole sighs and puts down the metal pole. Ribbon lays down her spoons.
NICOLE
Such vulgar language…
TSUGAMI
Trying to kill us?
NICOLE
If Ribbon wanted to kill the anyone who entered that door you’d be dead. We only wanted to issue a warning…
TSUGAMI
For those boys from earlier?
RIBBON
Yeah, they’re pretty scary! Not the kind of customers I’d want in here!
NICOLE
I’m impressed you noticed, I guess you have the title of Chief for a reason.
ROGAN
A compliment!
RIBBON
Uh, no. That was her nicely telling you that you’re useless…
TSUGAMI
What?
NICOLE
I already know you didn’t tell off those idiots.
ROGAN
No. We put everything we had into tracking you.
NICOLE
I already said that.
TSUGAMI
You..!
RIBBON
Oh boy! (Get’s between Tsugami and Nicole) Is there something we can help you with?
TSUGAMI
What?
NICOLE
Well, you clearly followed us for a reason, right?
ROGAN
I don’t know about that…
RIBBON
You don’t need to lie to us.
TSUGAMI
How exactly do you know—
Ribbon’s ear twitches.
RIBBON
You get louder what you want to cover up something and you’re failing.
TSUGAMI
Wha?
NICOLE
Ribbon doesn’t just see spirits, she can sense people too. Their presence, their emotions, what they are looking for, even when they lie.
ROGAN
That’s impressive.
RIBBON
Aw, shucks! Anyways, so what did you come for? What kind of job do you have for us?
TSUGAMI
What do you mean?
NICOLE
You spoke to Mr Dickens… or at least he spoke to you…
ROGAN
How did you?
RIBBON
She’s reading your tarot cards as we speak.
TSUGAMI
A Rukia?
RIBBON
No, Nicole’s a Lume.
NICOLE
If the Rukia knew about me then there really would be an uncomfortable investigation…
RIBBON
They don’t like people like them who aren’t one of them. Diviners are really proud people.
TSUGAMI
I noticed…
NICOLE
In any case, what is it you want to ask us?
ROGAN
We want to know more about what you do.
NICOLE
You want to observe us?
RIBBON
Why?
TSUGAMI
To see if you’re the real deal, and not a bunch of fakes.
ROGAN
And if you are the real thing, we want to recruit you.
NICOLE
Interesting…
RIBBON
Recruit us for what..?
Nicole stands and approaches Tsugami and Rogan.
NICOLE
Alright, you can follow us, but there’s a catch.
TSUGAMI
What gives you the right?
NICOLE
(grins) Oh, are you going to do an investigation, if we refuse to let you tail us?
TSUGAMI
And if we do?
NICOLE
I think you’re going to need a permit.
Rogan laughs.
ROGAN
It’s not often someone can stand up to our illustrious chief and win! I’m beginning to like this girl!
NICOLE
Well, now that we have that decided, it’s time to get to work. Ribbon, I think I found our client!
RIBBON
Whoa, already? (goes over to Nicole) That’s Nicole for you!
Tsugami walks over and leans over Ribbon’s shoulder. She stares at him and blushes. Nicole stands and removes a deck of tarot cards from her bag.
NICOLE
Let’s see if we can pinpoint her next location.
TSUGAMI
Using tarot cards?
NICOLE
Indeed.
ROGAN
Interesting.
A boy with brown hair and blue eyes appears next to Ribbon. Ribbon smiles at him. Nicole finishes flipping over her tarot cards.
NICOLE
She’ll be at the Public Library at 3:00.
RIBBON
Cool. Let’s go!
NICOLE
Right. Do you have that?
RIBBON
Yep. Tommy gave it to me just now.
ROGAN
Who’s Tommy?
RIBBON
Tommy Butcher. Little brother of Lidea Butcher.
NICOLE
Alright. I’m ready. Let’s get going.
RIBBON
Right.
Ext. Outside Tokagetsu City Library— day
Nicole and Ribbon wait at the bottom of the stairs of the City Library. Rogan and Tsugami stand just down the street watching them intently. A woman with short, brown hair and kindly eyes walks lightly towards the library. This is Lidea Butcher. Ribbon smiles at Tommy.
NICOLE
Alright, Ribbon. Engage.
Ribbon runs towards Lidea.
RIBBON
Ms. Butcher!
Tsugami and Rogan approach Nicole.
NICOLE
Jeez, and I told you to wait back there.
TSUGAMI
We can’t hear from back there.
NICOLE
You’re in uniform.
ROGAN We aren’t planning to get in the way, just to observe.
NICOLE
You are getting in the way just by being here.
TSUGAMI
Not our problem.
Nicole turns away from them.
NICOLE
Useless!
LIDEA
(to Ribbon) I’m sorry, but have we met?
RIBBON
No. I do know Tommy though.
LIDEA
Tommy passed away. He’s gone.
RIBBON
Yep.
LIDEA
Please excuse me.
Lidea moves passed Ribbon.
RIBBON
Hold on, Linni!
Lidea stops.
RIBBON
Tommy would always call you that, right?
Lidea slowly turns back towards Ribbon.
LIDEA
Tommy was a quiet child. He hardly had any friends, at all.
RIBBON
Nope, because he never needed anyone. He had his older sister.
Lidea begins to tear up.
LIDEA
It’s my fault he died!
RIBBON
It’s not.
LIDEA
It is!
Nicole appears behind Lidea, surprising her.
NICOLE
Why would it be your fault?
Lidea notices Tsugami and Rogan approach and her eyes widen.
LIDEA
Am I to be arrested, then?
Nicole sighs and turns to Tsugami and Rogan.
NICOLE
See? You guys basically breed people’s discomfort.
TSUGAMI
We can’t leave you two alone.
ROGAN
(TO Lidea) Sorry, Miss. We’re not here to arrest you.
TSUGAMI
We’re watching them.
Tsugami points at Ribbon and Nicole.
RIBBON
You don’t have to make us sound like degenerates!
TSUGAMI
Wow. You know some impressive words for an idiot.
NICOLE
Enough! We are overwhelming her. (To Lidea) I apologize for the commotion. Those two are some of our lackeys.
RIBBON
She means interns.
NICOLE
No. I mean servants. They are too useless to be anything exuding competence.
LIDEA
I see…
NICOLE
In any case, you said Tommy’s death was your fault. Why?
LIDEA
The day he died we were in a fight. We never really clashed before, not like that…
Int. Flashback— day
A younger version of Lidea stands across from Tommy (looks the same).
LIDEA
Why would you do that? Caden and I were going to be married.
TOMMY
You were going to leave me behind.
LIDEA
Yes! That’s what it means to get married, to live with your husband. To fight our battles together. To be with each other. To have kids and grow old! But now, you’ve ruined all of that!
TOMMY
You wanted to leave me behind! I can’t live without you in this house! It wouldn’t be home anymore!
LIDEA
Listen, Tommy, eventually you’ll have to grow up! Find some friends!
TOMMY
No! I only need you Linni!
LIDEA
Enough!
Tommy flinches.
LIDEA:
You’re horrible! Why can’t you just be happy for me! Why do you have to get in the way of my happiness?
Tommy runs out of the room crying.
Ext. Outside Tokagetsu City Library— day
Lidea has sat down on the steps. Ribbon, Nicole, Tsugami, and Rogan stand near her, listening.
LIDEA
He jumped off the bridge into a river. It’s all my fault.
Ribbon hugs Lidea, startling her.
RIBBON
Tommy has never blamed you for that fight. He never jumped off that bridge.
Lidea pushes her away.
LIDEA:
How do you know? You could never know.
Ribbon takes out a large locket and holds it out to Lidea. Lidea stares at it.
LIDEA
My…
Lidea slowly takes the locket from Ribbon, cradling it gently.
LIDEA (CONT’D):
My Grandmother’s Locket. How? I lost this years ago…
RIBBON
Tommy took it.
LIDEA
Then he really was—
RIBBON:
(interrupts Lidea) He wasn’t angry. (sighs) Open it.
Lidea opens the locket and pulls out a folded paper. She opens it to reveal a portrait of Lidea in her wedding dress.
LIDEA
This is…
RIBBON
Tommy drew that to congratulate you on your wedding. He had trouble fishing it out from the river.
Lidea cries, and Ribbon holds her close. Tommy stands behind them smiling. Slowly he disappears.
TOMMY
Thank you.
A flock of doves flutter into the sky. Nicole watches them ascend and sighs.
NICOLE
May you find peace in death.
RIBBON
May you find an end in the heavens.
NICOLE AND RIBBON
Amen!
Int. Paranormal Research Facility (old chem lab)— evening
Nicole, Ribbon, Tsugami, and Rogan sit in the room silently. Nicole types fiercely on the keyboard. Ribbon sits at the table drawing happily on a piece of paper, humming. Tsugami watches them closely. Rogan yawns and goes over to Ribbon and looks over her shoulder at her drawing.
ROGAN
This is a Keppish…
RIBBON
Yep! They’re really nice.
TSUGAMI
You’re drawing? You really are stupid.
RIBBON
I am not.
TSUGAMI
Nicole’s doing all the work, while you’re drawing.
RIBBON
You’re not doing anything either!
NICOLE
That’s true. I think I’m thirsty.
Nicole turns in her chair.
NICOLE
Ribbon, Tsugami. Go get me coffee.
Tsugami AND RIBBON
What?
NICOLE
You heard me.
TSUGAMI
Why do I have to get you coffee.
NICOLE
I’m sorry, but you do remember becoming my vassal, yes?
RIBBON
Well, what about me? Why do I have to go?
NICOLE
You’re being loud.
TSUGAMI
Why isn’t Rogan going?
NICOLE
He isn’t being loud.
ROGAN
I like this girl.
Nicole claps her hands.
NICOLE
Now, off you go. My usual.
Ext. Macen Street— evening
Tsugami and Ribbon walk down the street towards the Alpah Coffee Shop.
RIBBON
That’s Nicole’s favorite coffee shop.
TSUGAMI
Let’s just get this over with.
RIBBON
Mr. Belrot?
TSUGAMI
What did you call me?
RIBBON
Well, it is your last name right?
TSUGAMI
(sighs) Is there a reason you care?
RIBBON
Well, you are going to be working with us for a while, so…
TSUGAMI
I am not your lacky. This entire thing will be over as soon as we get back.
Tsugami walks into the shop.
RIBBON
I never called you a lacky…
Ribbon follows Tsugami into the shop but is stopped by three men. Rivit Esclair, the ring leader of the gang, is a snobbish lad with a smirk and an air of importance around him. Joe Kruush, Rivit’s personal worshipper, is a broad chested lad with brown hair and a red face. Lastly, Benny Lawrance, Rivit’s attack dog, is a blonde streaked lad with countless piercings and wild green eyes. Ribbon freezes.
RIVIT
Hello, Beast. Where’s your master?
RIBBON
Nicole’s not here.
RIVIT
Sent you to fetch something for her, like a good little dog?
RIBBON
I’m a cat Lorkiershin. Besides, you have a dog of your own.
BENNY
You talking about me?
Rivit motions him back.
RIVIT
Mind your tongue, you ill mannered beast.
Tsugami steps out of the coffee shop.
TSUGAMI
Ribbon!
Ribbon looks at him and blushes.
TSUGAMI:
C’mon! We have coffee to get remember?
JOE:
Why don’t you mind your own business?
TSUGAMI:
The safety of the public is my business. Ribbon included. Now, I’d better not see you hustling anybody anymore, understood?
Tsugami flashes them his badge. Rivit smiles pleasantly.
RIVIT:
I see no reason for you to worry. (To Joe and Benny) Let’s go.
Rivit, Benny, and Joe disappear into the crowds. Ribbon looks up happily at Tsugami.
TSUGAMI
What?
RIBBON
You called me by my name.
TSUGAMI
So?
RIBBON
You’ve never done that before.
TSUGAMI
That so?
RIBBON
Yep! That’s so! It makes me really, really happy, Mr Belrot!
TSUGAMI
Tsugami.
RIBBON
What?
TSUGAMI
Having you call me Mr anything is unsettling. It’s Tsugami.
RIBBON
Tsugami…
Ribbon grins. Tsugami turns and goes into the coffee shop.
TSUGAMI
C’mon. You’re the only one who knows what that psycho wants.
RIBBON
She’s not psycho, she’s psychic. There’s a difference.
TSUGAMI
Let’s just get this over with.
Tsugami grabs Ribbon by the hand and leads her inside.
Int. Paranormal Research Facility (old chem lab)— night
Ribbon and Tsugami walk in still holding hands. Nicole adjusts her glasses. Rogan whistles.
NICOLE
I was wondering what was taking you so long. I never would’ve guessed you could move across the bases so quickly. Tsugami you are bold, sir.
Tsugami throws down Ribbon’s hand.
TSUGAMI
It’s not like I wanted to hold it. She gets lost like it’s her profession. No one in their right mind would go anywhere near first base with her.
NICOLE
(sighs) Set the coffee there.
Tsugami slams the coffee down.
TSUGAMI
C’mon let’s go.
NICOLE
Weren’t you going to shadow us?
TSUGAMI
I see no further reason to never set foot in this hell hole again!
Tsugami leaves. Rogan sighs.
ROGAN
It was nice to meet you two. If you hear anything about your professor’s murder, let us know.
NICOLE
Of course.
RIBBON
Yeah…
ROGAN
(to Ribbon) Sorry about that. Tsugami isn’t used to women. It’s nothing personal.
Rogan turns and leaves. Nicole sighs.
NICOLE
Sorry. I was kind of hoping he would be nicer to you if he were to go on an errand with you…
RIBBON
It’s fine… I’m going to go for a walk…
NICOLE
See you back at the dorm.
RIBBON
Yeah.
Ext. Main Street— night
Ribbon walks over a moonlit bridge, and enters a nearby park. She sits on a park bench and sighs. Rivit, Joe, and Benny stagger into view.
RIBBON
(mutters) You smell like alcohol…
RIVIT
Yo, monster. All alone, are we?
Ribbon gets up.
RIBBON
Leave me alone, Rivit. I’m not in the mood.
Rivit laughs.
RIVIT
Not in the mood? Why? Did you get dumped?
Joe and Benny snicker.
RIBBON
It wasn’t as if I wanted him to like me anyway! Shouldn’t you be somewhere else? I’m not in the mood to deal with you.
There’s a loud gunshot, and Ribbon freezes to see a bullet embedded in a nearby tree. Rivit holds a gun and aims at Ribbon. Ribbon backs away.
RIBBON
Seriously? You’re going to kill me?
RIVIT
Let’s play a nice game of tag. It’ll be fun, right?
Ribbon turns and runs away back to the bridge. Rivit and the others laugh.
RIVIT (VO)
Run, kitty, run!
After a short chase, Ribbon finds herself running across the bridge. Time slows down as Ribbon looks over the bridge.
RIBBON (VO)
Fate is a funny thing. Nicole had told me that it isn’t completely unavoidable, so I wonder sometimes: would things have ended differently had I ran somewhere else?
Rivit and the others run out of the park, and Rivit holds up the gun.
RIBBON (VO)
What if I never said anything to Tsugami and Rogan? Would I have avoided anything?
Nicole runs on the other side of the bridge, trying to get to Ribbon.
RIBBON (VO)
I guess I’ll never know, because now…
Fade to black. We hear a gun shot.
NICOLE (VO)
(Screams) Ribbon!
We see Ribbon fall into the water in slow motion, blood spreading across the fabric of her clothing. Ribbon hits the water, but not before getting one last look at Nicole who is reaching over the bridge, crying. Fade to black.
RIBBON (VO)
Now the wheels of fate have begun to turn.
Skip to:
Ext. Downstream— night
Ribbon lays unconscious on the river’s shore, we can’t see the bridge anymore, but the park’s path still stretches out here, so we can be sure it’s near the city. We hear a shrill, careless whistling tune and see a man in a green hood with a dragon moon insignia on the back walk down the path. This is all we can see of Rouge for now. He stops.
ROUGE
Well, what do we have here?
Rouge walks down to where Ribbon lays.
ROUGE
Hmm, a Lukiershin. A special breed too. (Kneels beside Ribbon) Hey now! Still kicking?
Ribbon moans softly, and curls weakly into a ball.
ROUGE
It is cold out tonight. Can’t have you dying in the cold like this.
Rouge takes off his jacket and covers Ribbon with it. He walks away and we see long, crimson hair but not his face.
ROUGE
You have a major role to play, after all.
Fade out.
ROUGE (VO)
To change the world.

How to Stay Safe: Cancer Care During the Coronavirus
Hiya Gorgeous!
The COVID-19 crisis has been a source of stress and anxiety for us all—but that’s especially true for cancer patients and their loved ones. While many cancer patients understand they’re at a higher risk of serious complications from coronavirus, they’re also unsure what that really means—or what to do about it.
And even cancer patients who are either stable or in remission know they need to take special care, but may not know how. As a 17-year cancer-thriver myself, I’ve been taking extra precautions during this time, while encouraging and supporting my dad (who has pancreatic cancer) to do the same.
To that end, I want to bring in some expert advice to help guide us. I’ve called on my brilliant friend, Lizabeth Gold, who’s a Registered Dietitian at the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment.
She’s here to share her wisdom and provide you with 8 actionable steps you can take to stay as safe as possible during the coronavirus.
Just know that I’m standing with you, my fellow thrivers. We’ll weather this storm side-by-side.
I’ll let Liz take it from here.
Cancer Patient Care During the Coronavirus
Whether you’re a cancer patient or a caretaker, you’re likely experiencing a lot of fear and uncertainty since the onset of COVID-19.
Today, we’ll help reduce some of that confusion and give you 8 clear steps you can use to stay safer during the coronavirus. But first, let’s establish why that’s necessary.
Why Cancer Patients Should Exercise Care During the Coronavirus
Much is still unclear about the coronavirus in general—and that’s especially true when it comes to its specific implications for cancer patients.
However, we do know with certainty that cancer patients who contract COVID-19 are at a higher risk of severe complications.
While your exact risk level will vary based on your immune system and other health conditions, research shows that cancer patients as an overall population are three times more likely to experience severe complications from COVID-19. Those who are actively undergoing treatment are at higher risk than those in remission.
One possible cause of that increased risk is that COVID complications become severe when the immune system “overreacts” and initiates what is best called an “inflammatory storm”. This high level of inflammation is a major cause of the respiratory symptoms and heart issues you’ve heard about connected to the coronavirus.
Coinciding with this, a new research study found that the immune systems of cancer patients can be altered in subtle ways for long periods of time after treatment. While that alteration is helpful for keeping cancer at bay, it could cause problems for those exposed to infections or viruses like COVID.
Do Certain Cancer Types or Treatments Make You More Susceptible?
The simple answer is yes.
Type of Cancer: Diseases that affect the lungs or immune system (like lung cancer and cancers of the blood, myelomas, or lymphomas) can significantly increase the risk of complications from COVID. These patients should be extra vigilant.
Reach out to your oncologist and ask for specific directions to ensure your safety, especially if you’re receiving treatments. Be sure to ask:
What special precautions do they recommend?
Is there anything you should monitor more closely such as blood oxygenation, blood pressure, or temperature?
Are there any important medications you should keep on hand in case something happens?
Type of Treatment: Bone marrow transplants, immunosuppressive therapies, surgeries, side effects from chemotherapies, and radiation can all affect patient immune status. There are major differences in side effects from one cancer therapy to another and each person’s body reacts differently. Transplant patients may remain at higher risk for up to one year or even longer.
It is important to stay on top of laboratory values that tell you how your immune system is functioning at any particular time. Ask your doctor which lab values you should track and at what frequency for a full picture. If you are able, take care of your lungs and heart by continuing to exercise and carefully monitor for any signs of shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fever, or muscle aches. Work with your doctor to discuss other ways to minimize organ damage as you go through treatment.
Also, be aware that your treatment regimen may be changed to reduce the time you spend in hospitals and clinics to lessen your risk of infection. Surgery for the very earliest stages of some cancers may be delayed until after the pandemic’s peak. If your treatment is delayed, you can take the time to consult with an integrative cancer center (like the Block Center) and get a cancer-fighting health regimen in place right away.
Stage and Timing of Treatment: Chemotherapy can have a cumulative effect. Early on in the treatment cycle, your body is stronger and your heart, lungs and immune system will be functioning more effectively than if you are at the end of your treatment regimen. Studies have also shown that the more recent your treatment, the more susceptible you will be to complications from COVID. Patients who have relapsed or are metastatic will have a weaker immune response.
Health Status Before Treatment: As with anyone, underlying conditions like asthma, diabetes, COPD, immunodeficiencies, heart disease, high blood pressure, lung disease, kidney disease, smoking and obesity are all risk factors. Having two or more of these conditions increases risk exponentially, even for individuals who do not have cancer. It is critical that you follow all of the directions from your doctor regarding medications and therapies that address any of these conditions.
So What is the Bottom Line?
In short, cancer patients should take a defensive approach to COVID-19.
It’s important to do everything you can to both prevent exposure and support your overall health. Therefore, we’ve put together 8 recommended steps to optimize your health during the pandemic.
It’s worth noting that these simple, immune-boosting behaviors will also help you fight your cancer. Cancer and COVID-19 share a surprisingly large number of risk factors. The nutritional and lifestyle advice we give cancer patients at the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment also specifically targets the biology that puts you at risk for coronavirus infection.
8 Steps to Minimize Coronavirus Risk for Cancer Patients
Step 1: Follow the CDC Guidelines
First and foremost, follow the CDC general guidelines for COVID-19 and then some. Here is a CDC guideline refresher (and some additional considerations for the cancer community):
Stay home as much as possible. Your main goal should always be to prevent coronavirus exposure in the first place. To that end, ask your doctor if your treatment allows for a change in frequency. For example, a cycle every three weeks instead of every two weeks?
Wear a mask when going anywhere outside of your own home or car. Keep in mind that wearing a mask is more for the protection of others and does not replace hand washing or social distancing rules. Wash your hands frequently using the 20-second rule and try to avoid touching your face, nose or mouth.
Keep hand sanitizer with you at all times. Stash some in various places like your car, purse, backpack, coat pocket, etc.
Practice social distancing everywhere you go including your treatment center. Your treatment center should have strict guidelines in place regarding temperature and symptom checks along with proper procedures for their nurses and technicians.
Do not leave home if you are experiencing any symptoms. Use this CDC symptom checker if you are unsure.
Travel in your own car and try to avoid stopping. Pack a lunch and use the bathroom before you go! Use gloves at gas stations and try to pay at the pump versus handing someone your card.
If you travel out of town, call the hotel and check to make sure they are utilizing extra precautions. Also, plan to take your own wipes and disinfectant to clean all “high touch” areas of the hotel room like doorknobs, buttons and phones.
If you’re traveling for treatment, inquire with your treatment center. Some centers that cater to out-of-town patients have been able to secure a set of rooms that are specially treated. You can also ask your doctor if it’s possible to transfer your care to a local provider until the COVID crisis is over.
Find out what procedural changes your particular treatment center has implemented to adjust for COVID concerns. For example, family members may no longer be allowed to accompany you unless absolutely necessary. Some cancer treatments can be safely delayed and certain appointments should be conducted via televisit, if possible.
Step 2: Eat Well
For cancer patients, it’s important to remember that your immune system crosstalks with your gut bacteria and your muscles. As such you should do two things:
First, make sure to get enough protein. (Basic requirements for protein are about 1 gram of protein for every kilogram of body weight. If you weigh 60 kilograms, or about 135 lbs, shoot for 60 grams of protein daily.) Beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, quinoa and buckwheat are all great sources.
Second, focus on prebiotic foods. Ingredients like sauerkraut, kimchi, non-dairy yogurts, miso, tempeh, root vegetables, mushrooms, oats, chicory, bananas, lentils and jicama are great for supporting gut health.
A balanced diet also ensures adequate vitamin and mineral intake and this could make a big difference in fighting off the coronavirus. For example, according to a preliminary study of global COVID mortality rates, researchers are finding lower rates of mortality among countries in the southern hemisphere, indicating a possible link between Vitamin D deficiency and complications from COVID. Although more research needs to be done, we do know Vitamin D plays an important role in suppressing inflammation and regulating immunity, so this scenario seems likely. For more detailed info, check out this resource from the Block Center: How to Battle Coronavirus With Integrative Interventions.
Step 3: Stay Connected
Make time with friends and family, even from afar. That’s especially important for patients who need both support and social separation for immune health.
Enjoy the extra time at home with your immediate family with fun activities like a family game night or movie marathon. And use technology to create lines of communication to your distant loved ones. Apps like Facetime, Zoom, Google Hangouts and Skype all make it really easy to stay in touch. For older patients who may not be comfortable with technology, an amazing site called Generations on Line can help guide them through using these types of applications.
To start feeling more connected today, sign up for Kris’ free Cancer Patient Support series. You’ll get five days of free resources—including cancer-friendly recipes and tips for managing treatment side effects—based on Kris’ own journey with cancer. You can find those here.
Step 4: Move Your Body
Exercise reduces inflammation and stress. It also increases immune surveillance and regulation. So, as long as your doctor allows it, create a schedule and make exercise a part of your regular routine. Here are some tips:
Commit to 30 minutes a day of cardio, strength training, or dynamic stretching if you’re able.
Check with your gym to see if they are offering online classes or choose from the thousands of free workout videos on YouTube. (One of my favorites, Yoga with Adriene, has wonderful classes like “Yoga for Uncertain Times” and “Yoga for Mood Swings” all for free!) Most of the large cancer treatment centers have also created light-intensity exercise videos available on YouTube.
To help yourself get motivated and have more fun, move with friends. Invite a few loved ones to join you on a Zoom meeting at a set time each day and do your exercise class as a group.
If you don’t have a set of weights or any cardio equipment, you can still get a great workout by using the weight of your own body. Climbing up and down stairs (carefully!), push ups, sit ups, planks and squats are all ways to get a really great workout without owning a single piece of equipment! Here’s a great example.
Work with your doctor or physical therapist to choose the exercise that’s right for you. Remember not to push yourself too hard and exercise only when your caregiver is aware and close by!
Step 5: Sleep well
Did you know that sleep regulates a whole host of important things like hormones, parts of the immune system like cytokines, and inflammatory markers like cortisol and C-Reactive protein? Sleep deprivation can lead to higher susceptibility to disease, viruses and stress.
Unfortunately, many cancer treatments can wreak havoc on your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Talk to an integrative specialist for guidance on natural supplements that can help support healthy sleep. Here are a few more tips to improve your sleep quality:
Make sleep a ritual. Go to bed at the same time every night and have a routine for “winding down” gradually.
Stay off technology at least one hour before bedtime! The blue light emitted from phones, TVs and computers suppresses melatonin production and can reduce the restorative part of your sleep cycle.
Guided imagery or meditation for ten or fifteen minutes can significantly improve sleep quality and optimize circadian rhythms.
Reduce the temperature of your bedroom to below 65 degrees, if possible. It is okay to use lots of cozy blankets to stay warm, but the air you breathe should be on the chilly side.
Make your bedroom pitch black and quiet. Use blackout shades and turn off all lights including the lights from clocks or random digital devices.
Use a sound machine or fan to create “white noise” or use earplugs.
Step 6: Practice Stress Reduction
In such an anxious time, I know that reducing stress is not an easy task. It’s definitely worthwhile, though! Stress can increase inflammation and upregulate cancer pathways. Although it might be difficult to relax with everything going on, it is more important than ever to figure out ways to dial down your stress level.
Exercise, yoga, meditation and nature walks are all great ways to reduce stress—and they’re safe to do while social distancing. If you do decide to venture out for a walk, practice all of the basic COVID precautions and bring your caregiver with you for safety. Go to a quiet place like a park or nature reserve and avoid crowded areas and busy sidewalks.
Meditation is another wonderful way to manage stress. I recommend you try Kris’s Instant Stress Reduction meditation. It’s a great tool even for those who’ve never meditated before—and it’s free! You can listen here.
Step 7: Stay Informed
It’s good to stay on top of COVID developments in the news, but try not to obsess. Designate a specific amount of time to catch up on the news each day, then move on to something else. It’ll add stress if you dwell on it all day long.
It’s more important to keep a line of communication open with your provider, as significant changes are happening almost daily within hospitals and treatment centers. Unfortunately, many vital cancer treatments, surgeries and clinical trials were initially being postponed, but this will change in the coming weeks. As each facility figures out how to safely continue operations, patients should be able to resume their plans. Be a good advocate for yourself, be persistent and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions.
Step 8: Seek Help
Finally, if you do start to have any symptoms of COVID, seek medical attention immediately and don’t wait! Shortness of breath (no matter how insignificant), fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, chills, shaking, headache, sore throat and muscle aches are all potential symptoms. Several instances have been reported where people felt fine though they had very low blood oxygenation levels, but then quickly and unexpectedly deteriorated. It is dangerous for anyone to wait to seek help, but it could mean the difference between life and death for a cancer patient, so don’t ignore the signs.
Take Comfort in What You Can Control
I know this is a lot of information to absorb, but you don’t have to apply it all at once. Tackle one step at a time, lean on your support system and implement that change—then start to explore the next step.
While you do, take comfort in the fact that you’re doing all that you can to minimize your risk. I hope that these simple actions give you a sense of agency (and some peace) during these difficult times.
Take Care of Yourself, Sweetheart!
I love this guidance from Liz. Her robust understanding makes me feel a bit more empowered to take care of myself in this uncertain season. I hope it’s done the same for you!
If you’d like to learn more, make sure to visit Liz at the Block Center website.
And remember, you’re the CEO of your own health. As a cancer patient, you can be an active participant in your healing journey—even and especially during the coronavirus.
Your turn: What’s one thing you’re doing to stay well in mind and body during the coronavirus?
Health & heartfelt support,

Ash blonde of hair … smoky of eye … raspy of voice … Sultry Lizabeth Scott (born Emma Matzo, 29 September 1922 - 31 January 2015) - the most haunting and enigmatic of forties and fifties film noir actresses - died on this day eight years ago. For decades Scott was mostly uncelebrated (and bedeviled by comparisons to the more famous Lauren Bacall) but more recently she’s been reappraised as an essential figure in film noir. So far, I’ve screened three of Scott’s films at my monthly Lobotomy Room film club (Desert Fury (1947), Pitfall (1948) and Too Late for Tears (1949)) and it’s gratifying to see how audiences respond to her. For anyone curious about the famously secretive Scott, the 2022 memoir Lunch with Lizabeth - screenwriter, author, producer and filmmaker Todd Hughes’ account of his friendship with her - is required reading. June 3
We arose at the appointed time and had a spot of breakfast before heading to the Royal Palace. We wanted to get there before the crowds, but I think that's impossible in Madrid. On the way to the Palace we ran into a antique car show where they were literally lining up hundreds of cars called a Seat. They resembled an old Fiat to me or maybe a really old Morris Minor that I had in California in the early 60s. They were well maintained and some had  been souped up a little bit but all were very spiffy, shined and polished. We looked at some of them and I saw an engine or two that were modified. The speedometer on one said it could go up to about 75 miles an hour if it could even do that. They had 5 cylinder engines. Not many of those around. We went on to the Royal Palace and took a self-guided tour. It is opulence personified. We only saw probably 1/10 of the entire Palace and it was beautiful. You'll have to take our word for it because pictures are only allowed in a couple of places. Going up the grand staircase we met one of the guards named Richard as we were looking at a marble lion. I said they're just lions. He said but this one has no balls. We really weren't expecting that but we went with it and talked with him a little bit about the castle. I asked to take his picture to put on our blog. We took his picture by the lion on the other side of the staircase that actually had balls. He was quite interesting and we had a good chat before he had to take care of business and keep people from bringing backpacks into the Royal residence. I told him we were doing the blog. He wanted to know the name of the blog and how to access it. I gave him that information, asked for his name and told him I would put him in the blog. After that we just wandered around the castle/Palace. It was amazing and had been around since the mid-1700s with a lot of modifications, improvements and or changes in the furnishings. When we got to the end of the tour, we realized Lizabeth had lost her sunglasses either by them dropping off her head while we were walking in the carpeted areas or something else. We didn't go back and look because we thought they would have a lost and found. They did but no one had turned in any Sunglasses by the time we left that matched hers. We gave them out hotel name and number in hopes that they would call. They did not and we went by the next day to make sure if they weren't there and they weren't. Bad luck but we just have to move on. It's hard to find the right kind of meals. By that I mean something we can understand from the menu and something that we can share because the portions are huge here as they were in Greece. We opted for a Turkish restaurant that had rice plate with shaved meat like a gyro. It was essentially meat with rice and a salad on the same plate. It had a couple of sauces on it that were rather mild so I asked for the hot stuff. The waiter brought some over to me, available to the general public. I tried it and it was nice. Once he saw me eat that, he went in the back room and brought out the real hot stuff.   He said this is the man's hot stuff. I had some of that and it was a little hotter but not as hot as my “nuclear hell” in my refrigerator or some of the things I have eaten.  I didn't try to explain that one to him.  I'm not sure if he was pleased or shocked but he was much nicer after that and spoke more English. After lunch, we decided to go the oldest and most famous street in Madrid call the Grande Via. It was something. You can get anything you want there at any price from hundreds of euros to a couple of dollars for a hat and everything in between. We just walked up and down and took some side streets watching the people and enjoying the sights. We found a nice little Café for a much-needed cappuccino before we were going back to our hotel. We have been spending between 7 and 9 hours on the 2nd and third of June so we're starting to get a little tired about 4:30. We got home and had a cocktail which was a glass of wine before we went out for a late dinner down the street from the hotel. It promised to be a pretty raucous night because the Real Madrid soccer team was playing for the divisional championship in Cardiff Wales that night against the Italian team from Turin. We had what amounted to a big tapas (Racion) for two people of fried calamari with beer, just sitting in an outside Cafe and watching the world go by is interesting and fun. We weren't sure what Sunday would bring as far as when things would open so we decided to sleep in after staying up late watching the home team beat the Italians 4 to 1 for the Champions League trophy.   June 4   We got a late start for us and saw that there was a huge flea market one block over from the hotel. We strolled up and down that for a little while, but it was more like mass confusion for us as most things weren't marked and if you have to ask, you get the answer in as foreign language and you have no ability to negotiate the price. We just headed back downtown to see the famous bull ring built in 1929. Much to our dismay and without a thought of it being Sunday, we found out that there are no tours on Sunday just bull fights. Elizabeth didn't want to go see a bullfight, so we just took pictures and headed back downtown to look around before we went to what could best be described as their version of a Space Needle. After figuring out the subway system, we found the right stop to get off on because our GPS on the phone was giving some crazy results. We got there only to find out the observation deck was closed due to technical difficulties. There was someone inside working but there was no indication it would be solved anytime soon. Oh well, such is life so we headed over to the Van Gogh Cafe for a late lunch before heading back to the Plaza Mayor to see one of the oldest markets in Madrid, built from cast iron. It had been opened as a grocery store I believe but evolved into a Marketplace with probably 30 to 50 stalls, for want of a better word that sold wine, beer, pastries, Sushi, fresh fish, oysters on the half shell, specialty cured ham and almost everything you can think of. We sampled some baklava and went outside to have a coffee at a little cafe across the street because the market was so crowded.  It was like ants moving in prescribed lines back and forth from the food source back to the ant holme. After that we walked along the Calle Mayor, the other main street again, to our Metro stop to head home and watch more CNN and BBC news about the latest terrorist attack in London. Choosing not to go to a restaurant for dinner, we went to a pizza joint and had a fairly good pizza before packing it in for the evening. Tomorrow June 5th or today June 6th, depending on when we get this posted, we'll be on our way to the coast to begin the second leg of our trip in Spain. By the way, we got an email from the second German lady inviting us to meet her and her family about 20 kilometers outside Lisbon on the beach for coffee or something when we're passing through there.  We are having such a great time meeting some neat people.   June 5   We left Madrid and headed toward the coast Town of Malaga.  On the way we passed through the town of Toledo and had to stop for a look. We found a parking garage near the walled City and walked around taking in the sights.Needless to say it is beautiful with narrow streets, pretty shops and fantastic architecture. It was home to a community of Jewish, Christians and Muslim people's for centuries. Who would have thought. We looked at it a lot of ceramics and beautiful Steel swords and knives. There are two famous ceramic towns about an hour away and we decided to do a side trip to take a look. Lucky me.  We ended up Talavera De La Reina for the night. The tourist information Bureau helped us pick a hotel and told us it was a couple of kilometres away to a free parking spot and a 3 minute walk to the hotel in lieu of 12 euros for parking near the hotel. We went to the free parking spot and decided we would rather Park in the hotel garage. Our GPS took us to a spot that said we were there, but we could not see a hotel. We drove around for what seemed like 20 minutes but ended up being an hour we think. I ended parked in a taxi cab line up where our GPS and we were there at the hotel. I asked a taxi driver where the hotel was and he said take two rights and go in the underground garage.Sounded simple, but finding that garage from his directions was not easy or clear cut. We finally found the garage and went downstairs where the hotel parking was supposed to be but we went into the normal parking area for the shopping center. A car wash worker (they wash cars in the underground garages) told us how to get out and find the hotel parking garage which was twenty feet away but we had missed the special ticket taking Kiosk for the hotel. Luckily you get 10 minute free parking so we were able to get out of the garage without paying anything. Checked into hotel with no problem, except being very late for us and the Gentleman who checked us and was very accommodating, friendly and funny.  We found a small restaurant for what we thought was a dinner of a “small” Gyro each and a beer.  They were huge and I ate mine but it was too much for Elizabeth. the grand total for 2 full meals and a beer was 6 Euros. I don't know how they can do that. The room is nice and we had a great breakfast before heading out to see the two ceramic factories in this area.

Born on this day 100 years ago: sultry, smoky-eyed and ash blonde Lizabeth Scott (29 September 1922 - 31 January 2015). Possessed of “a voice that sounded as if it had been buried somewhere deep and was trying to claw its way out”, Scott was plagued by unfavorable comparisons to the more famous Lauren Bacall throughout her relatively brief film career (roughly 1945 – 1957). (Barry Gifford disparages her as “that bogus Bacall” in his 1988 book The Devil Thumbs a Ride & Other Unforgettable Films). I’d argue the underrated Scott was the most haunting and enigmatic of forties and fifties film noir actresses AND the last great “undiscovered” golden age Hollywood star (The British Film Institute, for example, has never deigned to screen a season of her films). Happily, in recent years Scott’s reputation has been comprehensively rehabilitated. To date I’ve screened three of Scott’s films at the Lobotomy Room film club (Too Late for Tears (1949), Desert Fury (1947) and Pitfall (1948)) and it’s been gratifying to see audiences respond to her so positively. Scott was famously reclusive in her later years and her private life is shrouded in mystery. Excitingly, author and filmmaker Todd Hughes' new memoir Lunch with Lizabeth does much to crack the enigma. In it, he gives an intimate and affectionate recollection of his friendship with this complicated woman – and it drops TODAY via the publishers Pelekinesis! (I’ve already read it and can verify it’s essential!). Pictured: the “Cinderella with a husky voice” in 1947.

Possessor of “a voice that sounded as if it had been buried somewhere deep and was trying to claw its way out”, the underrated Scott was the most haunting and enigmatic of forties and fifties film noir actresses. The 12 months Inequality Turned Much less Seen, and Extra Seen Than Ever This yr, many Individuals left the locations the place it was nonetheless attainable to come across each other. White-collar staff stopped going downtown, previous homeless encampments and to lunch counters with minimum-wage employees. The well-off stopped driving public transit, the place in some cities they as soon as sat alongside commuting college students and custodial staff. Diners stopped consuming in eating places, the place their ideas shaped the wages of the individuals who served them. Individuals additionally stopped broadly sharing libraries, film theaters, practice stations and public college school rooms, the areas that also created widespread expertise in more and more unequal communities. Even the D.M.V., with its cross-section of life in a single room, wasn’t that anymore. As an alternative, individuals who may afford it retreated into smaller, safer worlds through the pandemic. And that has made it more durable to see all of the inequality that worsened this yr: the unemployment that soared even because the inventory market did, the eviction threats that grew as residence costs hit new highs. In one other approach, nevertheless, the inequality already current within the financial system grew to become extra seen than ever this yr. With supply companies, restaurant couriers and private procuring apps, low-wage staff had been now — in far bigger numbers — coming proper to the doorstep of the well-off. Standing there in masks, their financial precarity was uncovered. “What these apps do is pressure individuals who reside secure lives to confront the instability of working-class lives — very instantly and for their very own profit,” mentioned Louis Hyman, an financial historian at Cornell. “Earlier than these apps, it was simple to fake that wasn’t actually taking place,” he mentioned of the yawning gaps within the financial system. “There have been methods to think about these supply folks weren’t emblematic of something.” We by no means thought an excessive amount of concerning the Domino’s supply drivers, he mentioned. They had been simply highschool youngsters. Till, by the 2000s, they weren’t. Historians are watching this second with a fraught query: Will there emerge a broader demand for structural reforms to deal with inequality, or an additional retreat by the prosperous from its issues? Recessions, they are saying, can make clear the place the financial system is heading. The businesses and industries that prosper throughout them typically anticipate how society will change within the years to come back. The promoting business grew through the Nice Despair, as corporations fought for scarce client {dollars} and offered escapism in alcohol, tobacco and leisure. The advert business anticipated the American client tradition of the postwar period. Accounting corporations and banks boomed, too, out of the New Deal-era regulation that got here from the Despair. Later, the recession of the early Nineties presaged the downsizing and outsourcing of even middle-class jobs, and the rise of consulting corporations to handle that shift. And out of the wreckage of the foreclosures disaster, institutional buyers foresaw a brand new marketplace for single-family rental properties. At this time, the businesses which might be thriving — some with eye-popping I.P.O.s — have harnessed each the actual circumstances of social distancing and the longer-term traits of a society pulling aside. These corporations allow you to carry a gathering with out visiting the workplace, to purchase a house with out glad-handing an actual property agent, to eat restaurant meals with out coming into a restaurant, to get pleasure from leisure with out theaters, to buy with out retail. They “remind us of an extended historic means of social fragmentation that’s now extra apparent than ever,” mentioned David Kennedy, a Stanford historian who has written extensively concerning the Nice Despair. “It appears to me that what they reveal is how simple it’s, and the way massive a market there’s, in our society for the sorts of companies that maintain us distanced from each other.” Up to date  Dec. 28, 2020, 1:38 a.m. ET There’s a pressure, although, between the isolation of the well-off and the seen dependence of a lot of their conveniences on low-wage labor. Professor Kennedy is deeply pessimistic that actual change will emerge from it. The Nice Despair created ache extra broadly throughout the financial system and lasted a decade, opening a bigger political window for reform. “It’s been a really very long time since folks throughout the earnings spectrum felt that performing within the collective curiosity was going to be extra helpful than performing in particular person pursuits,” mentioned Margaret O’Mara, a historian on the College of Washington. In Seattle round her, folks had been already beginning to broach these questions earlier than the pandemic. Younger tech staff had been enthusiastic early adopters of meals supply companies and apps like Uber and Lyft. And there was already a transparent dissonance, she mentioned, between the expertise of gig staff and the spiraling housing costs and gleaming new development tied to Seattle’s tech growth. That was earlier than it grew to become awkwardly clear that the gig staff had been now risking their well being, too. Again within the spring, the Harvard historian Lizabeth Cohen wrote an article for The Atlantic expressing hope that, as within the New Deal period, America may reply to financial calamity by remodeling itself right into a extra equitable society. It was early within the pandemic, when everybody was nonetheless celebrating the financial system’s new heroes: the grocery retailer clerks, supply staff, janitors and frontline nurses. That was earlier than the pandemic grew to become totally politicized, earlier than the tech I.P.O.s and earlier than Congress allowed unemployment assist to run out. Because the pandemic has dragged on, and because the hole has widened in how Individuals expertise it, Professor Cohen has grown much less positive that classes of empathy and unity from the Nice Despair can apply right now. We’re farther aside now than even six months in the past, not to mention earlier than the pandemic. “Simply take into consideration the pathways and the place they took you — you went in and obtained espresso in a spot the place you noticed individuals who had been being paid by the hour, not by the month,” Professor Cohen mentioned. These small moments vanished. Inside the middle-class neighborhoods and second-home retreats the place distant staff withdrew, there have been no homeless folks on the sidewalk. “It appears there have been fewer and fewer of these interactions, however they actually had been necessary for simply increasing the social world you reside in,” she mentioned. “Perhaps that’s the scariest dimension of this. The alternatives to work together with people who find themselves not like your self have shrunk.” Professor Hyman, nevertheless, continues to be optimistic, declaring that there’s one thing highly effective in how seen inequality turns into when a employee drops off a buyer’s Complete Meals order. “That’s partially what made the commercial financial system a greater financial system: photos of kids working in factories, the determined poor of the Thirties,” he mentioned. “Visibility is an efficient factor, that persons are compelled to confront it.” His argument isn’t that customers ought to really feel unhealthy about ordering takeout, or having their groceries delivered. It’s not the companies which might be the issue, he mentioned; it’s the insecurity and low wages that include doing that work in an financial system that gives few alternatives to construct wealth and restricted entry to advantages. Manufacturing facility work wasn’t all that nice, both. What we romanticize about it are the livable wages and advantages it supplied for a time. “The story of the Thirties shouldn’t be making the roles of the Nineteen Twenties work higher,” he mentioned. “It’s creating new techniques for the commercial work pressure.” After the pandemic, it’s probably some restaurant and retail jobs received’t come again. And people who did them could be a part of the rising ranks of logistics staff: individuals who transfer issues round warehouses, or transfer passengers round cities, or transfer packages and takeout round your neighborhood. That may be a very completely different type of work pressure, in want of recent techniques. Supply hyperlink #Inequality #Visible #Year
