GROWIGN PLANMPS
Tumblr media
Super High Tech BAGGY SEED SPA consisting of a bunch of ziplocs with seeds on moistened paper towels in a tray wrapped in a towel on top of a footstool over a heating vent. When they’ve done the rooty sprouty thign they get moved to
Tumblr media
THE GROWIGN CHAMBER! Where the children sit in a couple dollar store trays that I frankensteined together using hot glue and gorilla tape inside of a plywood cabinet made from scraps with rope lights wound around the bottom to heat it above garage temperatures, powered by a temperature control box my dad made 30 years ago to turn a crockpot on and off so my mom could make yogurt and lit by a grow bulb I can move up and down
I’m adding like 3 light fixtures with regular daylight cfls near the top bc that one grow bulb isn’t going to cut it. And I’m going to put a fan in there somehow.
Pictured: 5 kinds of tomatoes and 3 kinds of peppers.

8 Tomatoes That Exceeds Expectations (And that Ben Finds Cool)
"Sometimes things don't turn out exactly how we think they will, but it doesn't mean they won’t be just as good. Or even better…" In Ben's Little Tomato, (sequel to Ben's Little Acorn), Ben's favorite plant is tomatoes. There are so any different tomatoes out there, and here is a list of just 8 that exceed expectations for what a tomato is,  looks like, tastes like, and how it can be used. These are also tomatoes Ben, from the Ben's Little Book Series, would find cool! The author found these tomatoes through The Whole Seed Catalalogue from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (2019)!

Scientist in the garden: dragonfly eyes, bees bite flowers, cool tomatoes, & tips
Scientist in the garden: dragonfly eyes, bees bite flowers, cool tomatoes, & tips
What’s the deal with dragonfly eyes? They are so huge! We’ll zoom in on them.
Do bees bite? Yes, but not the way you might think.
Growing cool tomatoes? I have some thoughts on that too.
I’m a scientist and a gardener so it’s not surprising I write an occasional series here on The Niche called The Scientist in the Garden, with today’s Memorial Day weekend edition focused on the above questions.

my favorite dreams of all time, including gems like
- school field trip turns into me being teleported to a river where i immediately drown - hyunjin from stray kids steals my shoes and then gets upset when i don’t want to fight him to get them back - i can physicially rearrange planets simply by dragging them on a touchscreen but the sun explodes, instantly killing me and six other people - i have to dig a hole in a pile of leaves every night with a bunch of other people but if i “dig wrong” i get dragged out and thrown into a lake, wyv is there and she tells me she had no idea this was a controlled murder lake and only came here because she didn’t want to plant tomatoes - i hear a noise in the middle of the night so i go outside to investigate and there’s a projector and screen set up in my backyard and some random guy is standing there watching whatever was being projected - i have to take a state-mandated test in a post-apocalyptic building with thousands of other kids, all of us are in ball gowns, i don’t finish the test and scream when i turn and see the unfinished portion of the test next to me and instantly wake up - i look out my bedroom window to see my neighbor’s yard full of puppies, i wave to them and they all grow wings and take off into the sky - carrie fisher is sitting in my bathtub and she has a trumpet, a bottle of iced tea is floating around her in the water and occasionally she plays the trumpet - there’s the east side and west side, the east side is pretty and rich and the west side is poor and in shambles, i go with a bunch of my friends to find the mysterious building that somehow exists on the border between the cities and once through the underground mines, find a man who has been there for two thousand years, he explains that the east side actually is in ruins and because we made it through the labyrinth we are the ones who will save the east side (i could talk for hours about this dream; it’s the most intricate dream i’ve ever had) - i had a lucid dream and to test if i really was lucid dreaming i tried to turn myself purple; it worked and i immediately started freaking out from excitement but i quickly forced myself to calm down so i didn’t wake myself up; i tried to think of what i wanted to do before the lucid dream ended so i tried flying and it worked too and it was?? actually kind of underwhelming but lucid dreaming is so cool - i had a superpower that i could change the paint/wallpaper on a wall just by thinking what i wanted it to look like and snapping my fingers

All of the soft questions please? :>
Well, I’ve already answered a lot of them on previous posts, so make sure to check this blog and my personal one! But, anyways, here are the rest.
Stuffies: How did you meet your best friend?: Well, Meghan and I met around the second grade and, since I have long-term memory loss, I don’t really remember much. But she and I are still friends today, so something must’ve clicked! :)
Fluffy Pillows: What happened in your most recent dream?: You’re in luck, bc I write my dreams down. So, this time, I found myself in my mom’s old car and I look over to see her driving. I ask her where we’re going and she tells me “To that place” and I look behind us and see Mathieu and Allen (2p!s) and the I, like any normal human being, think “holyshitwtfisgoingonhowthefu kdidigethere” (keep in mind that this was a few months back when I was mainly in the Hetalia fandom and I don’t lucid dream so I didn’t know I was dreaming) and then Mathieu winks at me and says “hey babe” and I turned into a tomatoe. Then, somehow, I managed to figure out I was Mathieu’s gf and the I looked over at Allen and he was Oliver now? Why? But, I mean, okay why tf not, I’m already Mathieu’s gf and- the car stopped, we got out and then my mom was gone and I was in this really weird place in the middle of the desert and the car was still there and Oliver was François now okay then and they went into the place and it was this really crazy gas station and I’m pretty sure Yao (China) and Kiku (Japan) were at the register and I think I saw Lutz and Luciano on these message chairs and then a can of Bud Light was in my hand and the Mathieu appeared out of nowhere and then we drank beer and then he disappeared and we were playing hide and seek and then I was behind a box and then I woke up in my bed.(Yes I haven’t had a dream in a few months I’m weird)
Scented Candles: How do you relax?: I like to listen to my music and read fanfiction.
Gem Stones: What’s your birthstone/favourite stone?: Emerald and emerald
Fuzzy Socks: What’s your favourite movie: “Anastasia (1997)”
Laughter: What’s the funniest joke you’ve ever heard?: I’m more of a pun girl
Mittens: Do you like the snow?: Y E S
Hot Cocoa: What’s your favourite Starbucks drink?: I don’t like Starbucks
Flower Petals: What’s your favourite flower(s)?: Blue Forget-Me-Nots (bc of their name) and White Lilies (bc they symbolize death).
Cotton Candy: What’s your favourite type of candy?: Sour Patch Kids and Kinder Chocolate
Bubble Baths: Your favourite memory?: Holding my little brother for the first time
Roasted Marshmellows: You’re camping with friends! Describe the forest you’re pitching your tent in: Dark, alive, green, with woody scents drifting in the air and the sounds of animals a quiet hum in the back of my mind.
Warm Hugs: Who would you love a hug from right now?: Anyone that would be willing to let me stay in their embrace for as long as I want. Anyone who’d let me lie my head in their lap once we'd separated. Anyone who’d play with my hair or slowly run their hands through it, until I fell asleep. Yeah. That would be nice. However, I haven’t met anyone irl who’d be that willing! X')
Clouds: What’s the best shaped cloud you’ve seen?: Well, one time I saw a cloud shaped like a kitten playing with a mouse (Yes, playing. Not eating/chasing).
Holding Hands: What was the name of your first love?:………. I’d usually say I haven’t had a first love yet, but I’ll tell the truth this once. His name was Wyatt.
Tealights: Describe a romantic date perfect for you: My significant other would drive us to an ice skating rink where we’d skate freely until dinnertime, then we’d go out for dinner at Fuji-San (my favourite resturant). After we finished eating, they’d drive us out to the middle of nowhere and we’d have a campout, stargazing in the late autumn weather all night long.

I haven't been keeping up my lil garden journal. There have been ups and downs.
The tomatoes didn't like when the weather was in the 60s and 50s for way longer than normal, and they didn't like it when we jumped past the region's normal temperature range (70-80) to hover in the 80s and 90s all the time.
I don't blame them.
The jalapeño loves it though, and is finally growing.
I was out of state for a while and my outdoor garden didn't get sufficient attention while I was gone, so I came back to significant damage on the tomatoes, and almost all the onions died.
The cherry tomatoes, my single strongest plant, persevered. The fruit is ripening, and it is very exciting. The lucid gem tomatoes have a pretty bad case of blossom end rot, which probably means the roots are damaged and are having trouble taking in calcium. The temperature swings alone might have been enough to cause this; I don't know.
Upon returning from my trip, I found the squash has grown enough to put out flowers. I bought a paint brush and I have been dutifully pollinating them, since the flowers I planted died while I was gone (I planted new seeds yesterday).
Somebody hooked up the hose out back, which has made watering much easier. In this heat, I am watering most things daily.
Jury is still out on the remaining two onions and whether they will survive.
The green onions, however, are unkillable, and they have flourished. I owe thanks to the people who have planted more out there over time.

And just like that we’re doing it again 🌱  I’ve been waiting for this day for so long.
60 cups, 30 tomato varieties and I’ve sown 2 seeds in each cup, so that makes it 120. I’m not going to end up planting them all, but I wanted to make sure I’ll get at least 1 or 2 good transplants from each variety. Also I’m doing plastic cups this year, as they’re bigger than any seed trays I could find and a lot more sturdier. If they work well I’ll get to use them for a lot more years to come.
My indoor seed starting is focused mostly on tomatoes this year, but I will eventually sow a smaller tray of other regulars, like purple kale, purple cauliflower, Romanesco broccoli and a couple of eggplant varieties (Turkish Orange and White Egg). For not I’m glad I got this done.
The tomato varieties are Piennolo del Vesuvio, Garden Peach, Gigantomo F1, White Oxheart, Mushroom Basket, Zapotek Brown Flesh, Green Sausage, Great White Blue, Litchi, Afternoon Delight, Drapee, Paul Robeson, Old German, Voyage, Brad’s Atomic Grape, Charlie Chaplin, Auria, Citron Russe, Black Carbon, Lucid Gem, Black Beauty, Green Zebra, Phil’s One, Purple Smaragd, Gargamel, Barry’s Crazy Cherry, Orange Cherry, Riccio di Parma, Piprakujuline Triibuline and wild tomatoes.

Top 12 tomato tips for growing great ones
Top 12 tomato tips for growing great ones
A nice variety of unusual and regular tomato varieties.
Looking for some tomato tips?
I do sometimes escape the lab into the outside world and once out of there I can often be found in my vegetable garden  looking after my tomatoes. I’ve written many times here on The Niche about gardening including tomatoes and have an occasional series “Scientist in the Garden.”
After a couple of decades…
