Whaaaat? TWO Legend of Zelda theme park playlists in as many days? What can I say--sometimes a bunch of spoons fall into my lap and I use them to scoop music into a box.
This one is for the Skyward Realm, and accordingly consists of BGM for sky areas from various games, Rito character themes, and assorted flight-related tunes. It was easy to find material for, but tough to actually arrange because 90% of that stuff is from like three games and I wanted to mix things up properly. I think I managed all right.

Crystal Palace Field Trip Part 1: Walking With Victorian Monsters
Tumblr media
The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs take their name from the original Crystal Palace, a glass-paned exhibition building originally constructed for a World's Fair in Hyde Park in 1851.
In 1854 the structure was relocated 14km (~9 miles) south to the newly-created Crystal Palace Park, and a collection of over 30 life-sized statues of prehistoric animals were commissioned to accompany the reopening – creating a sort of Victorian dinosaur theme park – sculpted by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins with consultation from paleontologist Sir Richard Owen.
The Palace building itself burned down completely in 1936, and today only the ruins of its terraces remain in the northeast of the park grounds.

Six sphinx statues based on the Great Sphinx of Tanis also survive up among the Palace ruins, flanking some of the terrace staircases. They fell into serious disrepair during the latter half of the 20th century, but in 2017 they all finally got some much-needed preservation work, repairing them and restoring their original Victorian red paint jobs.

…But let's get to what we're really here for. Dinosaurs! (…And assorted other prehistoric beasties!)
The "Dinosaur Court" down in the south end of the park still remains to this day, displayed across several islands in a man-made lake. Over the decades they've been through multiple cycles of neglect and renovation, and are currently cared for by the London Borough of Bromley (Crystal Palace Park Trust are due to take over custodial duties in September 2023), with promotion and fundraising assistance from organizations like Historic England and the Friends of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs charity.
Just about 170 years old now, the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs represent fifteen different types of fossil creatures known to 1850s Victorian science, with only three actual dinosaur species featured. Although often derided for being outdated and very inaccurate by modern standards, they were actually incredibly good efforts at the time, especially taking into account that the field of paleontology was still in its very early days.
They also just have a lot of charm, with toothy grins and surprisingly dynamic poses.
Unfortunately on the day I visited in early August 2023 most of the statues were heavily obscured by plant growth, both on their islands and on the sides of the paths they can usually be viewed from. Since I'd seen images from about a month ago showing things being less overgrown, this was probably just some unlucky timing on my part coinciding with some explosive summer foliage growth.
Tumblr media
The first island on the trail features a few Permian and Triassic animals which were only known from fragmentary remains in the 1850s. These "labyrinthodonts" were recognized as having similarities to both amphibians and reptiles, and so were depicted with boxy toothy jaws, warty skin, stumpy tails, and long frog-like back legs.
Tumblr media
Today we'd call these particular animals temnospondyl amphibians, specifically Mastodonsaurus, and we know they were actually shaped more like giant salamanders with longer flatter crocodilian-like jaws, smaller legs, and long paddle-like tails.
Tumblr media
———
Tumblr media
Somewhere in the foliage beyond this specific "labyrinthodont" there was also supposed to be a pair of dicynodonts, but I couldn't see much of them at all and didn't manage to get a remotely visible photograph.
Tumblr media

These Dicynodon are depicted as looking like sabre-toothed turtles complete with shells. That was fairly speculative even for the time, but considering only their weird turtle-beaked-and-walrus-tusked skulls were known it was probably the best guess Hawkins and Owen had. Today we know these animals were actually synapsids related to modern mammals, but Victorian understanding considered them to be a type of reptile.
Modern reconstructions of dicynodonts have a slightly different face shape, along with squat pig-like bodies and semi-sprawling limbs. They may have had fur, but currently the only known actual skin impressions from the genus Lystrosaurus show leathery bumpy hairless skin.

I have another LoZ theme park playlist for you all! This one--a collection of themes used in the games to represent princesses and other gentle or elegant female characters (and one or two males)--is for Hyrule Castle Gardens, a peaceful garden area where people can hang out, admire flowers and topiaries, and just soak up some soft, pretty ambience. I firmly believe that theme parks need quiet nooks like this so you're not always go-go-going from one thrill ride to the next, wearing yourself out.

Zelink Week 2021 Day 1: Facade
It's here! It's here! It's day one of Zelink Week 2021 and for the first prompt, "facade - crystal castles, masquerades" I focused on the "masquerade" aspect. This is the first part of my theme park AU, inspired by @stupidzeldaaus. I was really struggling with some of the prompts but then they posted an au idea (which I can't find for some reason) about LOZ but Ganon was just a corrupt theme park owner, and well, I was off and running and the rest of the prompts just about wrote themselves. (Theme park inspired by Action Park.)
Click below to read part 1 of "Under the Boardwalk," or read it on ao3! Rating is M for now and will change to E for the last part. Fic title from "Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters.

Under the Boardwalk Chapter 1: We'll Be Havin' Some Fun
He’s really cute. Big blue eyes, choppy shoulder-length hair that shines just a bit red in the sunlight, and a sweet smile that would make her melt in any other circumstance. He’s even an inch or so shorter than she is, which she finds shockingly attractive.
Zelda gives herself a mental shake and pushes those thoughts away. She can’t afford to be attracted to her source, it would compromise her entire mission. No matter how much her fingers itch to comb through his hair and pull it out of the tie he keeps it in. No matter how much she wants to run her tongue up his neck and suck on his earlobe, feel the blue earring he always wears clack against her teeth.
Girl, get a hold of yourself! she thinks.
She twirls a piece of her hair around her finger, and leans forward just a bit. Her skimpy sundress dips down in front when she does, and Link’s eyes immediately gravitate toward the gap.
“You know,” she says, just a bit slyly, “I’ve always wondered what the parks are like when no one else is here. I bet they’re spooky.”
He yanks his eyes away from her cleavage, a faint tinge of pink on his cheeks the only evidence that his attention wasn’t fully on what she was saying. It’s a quiet morning at the Hyrule Castle Amusement Park, the crowds usually not showing up until after lunch time. The only sound is the tinny music from one of the rides and the burble of the water that keeps the duckies swirling around in their tub.
“Oh … it’s … it’s a little bit, yeah,” he says. “They leave all the lights on for security reasons so it can seem a bit post-apocalyptic.”
They leave the lights on all night? That’s good information. Zelda feels a bit better about what she’s doing, leading him on, pretending to like him just to get the information she needs. Link works the duck pond game at the park, spending his hours in an open-sided trailer festooned with colorful stuffed koroks and plastic swords and balloons shaped like heart containers. He was a good mark, observant, and willing to tell her just about anything she wanted to know, provided she was equally willing to flash a bit of cleavage or show off a bit of leg. It seemed a fair exchange, as far as she was concerned.
Besides, what does it matter? She doesn’t like him, she barely knows him. She doesn’t like how he is always so friendly with the kids that come to play his game, and makes a big deal out of giving them a prize whether they won the game or not. She doesn’t care that his face lights up when he sees her. And she certainly doesn’t care for the way his attention is fully focused on her when she’s around, how he hangs on her every word like she’s the best part of his day.
All of that’s probably just lust, anyway, she tells herself. He’s just a typical horny young man and she’s going to use that to her advantage. There’s nothing more to it.
“Oooh, that does sound spooky,” Zelda coos.
She leans forward again, this time so close that it almost seems like she’s going to kiss him. The day is hot, and her skin is quite warm, and she knows that means the light perfume she’s sure to spritz on before she sees him has wafted his way, hooking him on her scent like a bee on a flower. Link’s eyes are wide and round as he watches her lean in, his mouth slightly open. She thinks he’s stopped breathing.
See? Lust, just as she’d thought.
But still, another pang of guilt assaults her heart; even though she doesn’t like him, not at all, she still feels bad about fooling him like this, making him think she’s interested in him and not just the information he can provide her. She looks into his big blue eyes and briefly thinks about digging her fingers into his hair and yanking him forward, shoving her tongue into his mouth and claiming him for her own. But no, kissing him would certainly be going too far, despite how full and soft his lips look, and how they’re just right there in front of her. She’s already being dishonest to him, she doesn’t need to take advantage of him too.
Instead, without breaking eye contact, she reaches out and plucks one of the ducks out of the tub and then stands back, pulling a pen out of her bag. He looks a bit dazed at the sudden loss of her proximity and whatever dashed fantasy he’d been having in the moment. Zelda smiles to herself and wipes the water from the duckie and before scrawling her phone number on it, the blue ink bleeding into the yellow plastic of the duck.
“Maybe sometime you can show me what it’s like here at night when everyone is gone. Just you and me,” she says before leaning forward again and dropping the duckie back into the tub.
Zelda immediately turns and walks away, pretending not to notice the splash of water behind her as Link frantically scrambles to retrieve the duck out of the tub.
She stopped to use the bathroom, crossing to the sink to wash her hands before she leaves the park, and guiltily examines her reflection. She hardly recognizes herself, wearing the costume of a shallow, flirtatious girl and falsely coming on to a boy so she can gather information. But she remembers the tears in Mipha’s eyes as she told Zelda about the people she’d treated at the hospital for injuries sustained at the park. That the powerful Mr. Ganondorf, owner of the park, and, coincidentally, a primary shareholder in the insurance company that insured it, refused to pay for. The bribes he paid to inspectors to overlook how dangerous the rides were. The lives that were ruined by exorbitant medical bills and permanent injuries.
A sweet boy’s broken heart would have to be collateral damage. Zelda had briefly considered bringing him into her plan, but she couldn’t put him at risk like that. She had also heard tales of whistleblowers meeting an unfortunate end by some of Ganondorf’s more unscrupulous associates. A lot of suspicious “accidents” well away from the park. She was willing to take the chance, but she would never forgive herself if Link was hurt because of it. It was the main reason her editor had told her to stay away from the park. To let more seasoned reporters gather information before they launched a full-scale investigation. That as an intern just out of journalism school she was not to involve herself in a dangerous situation.
But she couldn’t wait. She knew that if they waited until it was safe to launch an investigation, more people would get hurt, and more officials paid off to ignore it. It was up to her to get that preliminary information so the investigation could start right away. And so here she was, in a skimpy sundress, wearing more makeup than she ever did, standing in strappy sandals that made her feet ache, seducing a park employee so she could gather information.
As Zelda dried her hands, she heard her phone ping in her bag.
what about tonghit? *tonight this is link btw if your free
Zelda smiled. That was fast.
I’m free tonight, she typed, then hesitated before pressing send. She should put an emoji. People flirted with emojis right? She hadn’t done a lot of flirting, cribbing her technique mostly from television and movies and from stories her friends told. She scrolled through the list of emojis before settling on a purple heart.
the park closes at 9 do u want to meat at my game at 845?
She smiled again, charmed by his lower-case only texts and misspellings. She could imagine the nervous tremble of his fingers as his thumbs flew over his phone, anxiously awaiting her response.
Sure, see you then. She added a winking emoji. Tucking her phone back into her bag, she left the park to plan for her evening.
******
Zelda arrived at the park at 8:30 p.m. She had bought a season pass so she could come and go as she pleased, which had put quite a dent in her intern’s salary. The good news is that her editor would cover the bill. Eventually.
Upon seeing how she was dressed, her editor had suspiciously asked her where she was going.
“Where are you off to so late at night?”
“I’m meeting someone.”
“Someone? Oh, do you have a date?” he’d asked, waggling his eyebrows.
“Ugh, Dad! Yes I do, for your information.”
Zelda supposed nosiness was a good quality in a newspaper editor. Rhoam Bosphoramus had worked his way from a lowly, coffee-fetching intern to become the editor-in-chief of the largest newspaper in Hyrule, the Hyrule Star Fragment. Wary of accusations of nepotism, she was happy to start the same way, although thankfully these days interns did a lot more than fetch coffee. But they’d have to see she was more than just her father’s daughter when she used her reporting skills to bring Mr. Dinraal Ganondorf down.
“Seem to be a bit overdressed for a summer date, don’t you think?”
She had changed into a pair of dark colored jeans, a black long-sleeve t-shirt, and had a black cap tucked into her bag so she could cover her blonde hair. It was a bit much for the warm summer night, but she didn’t want to stand out to any security cameras.
“Oh, you know, it can be quite chilly in those movie theaters,” she said airily.
“Huh, I guess so. What are you guys seeing?”
Geez, she was never going to get out of here! She desperately tried to think of any of the films currently in the theaters but came up blank.
“Oh, you know, whatever looks good when we get there. Which … I’d better get going!”
“Okay, stay out of trouble!”
“Ha ha, sure Dad, I’ll try.”
Before starting her car, Zelda made sure she had everything she needed. A digital camera with a fresh memory card (she was unwilling to trust such important photos to her phone); backup battery for the camera; a notebook and pen; a voice recorder; and a flashlight. All things she knows would be covered by her phone, but she just felt better having more than one device to collect evidence. You never know what could get lost, or broken, or stolen.
She arrived at Link’s booth promptly at 8:45 p.m. The smile he gave her sent a fresh wave of guilt surging through her heart. But she hardened herself, reminding herself of the people she was doing this for. It’s worth it. It’s worth it, she thought. He’ll be fine.
“Hi,” he said shyly once she’s standing before him.
Zelda leaned toward him, just as she had earlier that afternoon. She was sure the effect would be lessened since she wasn’t in one of the skimpy outfits he was used to seeing her in, but was pleased to see him blush at her proximity nevertheless. She resists the impulse to press him up against the side of the booth and have her way with him. Instead, she assumes the flirty persona she’s relied on to keep herself removed, unattached.
She spreads a slow smile across her face.
“Hi,” she replies, lowering her voice a bit so it sounds throaty and suggestive.
It’s cute the way he freezes, just like he did this afternoon. She watches his throat bob as he swallows heavily, the desire to plant her mouth on his neck and suck a mark onto him almost overwhelming.
“Almost done?” she asks instead.
“Oh! Oh yeah!”
She watches him scurry through closing up, pulling in racks of stuffed toys, turning off the pump that churns the water so the duckies keep moving in a steady circle, and finally, turning off the lights before pulling down the metal awning and locking it with a large padlock. He then guided her around his booth and into the shadows behind it.
“You wait here,” he tells her once he’s finished. “I’ll just go and clock out and then come back for you.”
“Won’t security notice you coming back?”
He laughs.
“No. They don’t care. The only thing they care about are the receipts.”
“The receipts?”
“Yeah, the money. All of the cash boxes are collected at closing and taken up to the office.”
Link gestures to the centerpiece of the park: A huge castle that looks straight out of a fairy-tale, the titular Hyrule Castle. Link tells her that’s where the safe is, as well as human resources, security, and, most importantly, Ganondorf’s office.
She tucks herself into the shadows at the back of the booth to wait for Link’s return, filing away the information he gave her to plan out her next move. Once again she feels she made the right choice in using Link for information. Using him, using him, using him, seems to echo in her thoughts, pulsing through her in time to the beat of her heart. The only lights in the park are the flashy bulb and LED lights that line the rides, casting jittery, multi-colored shadows everywhere. The music is quiet, and with no people about to make noise, the only sound is the quiet sighing of the wind.
It is pretty spooky, actually. Zelda shivers, then nearly jumps out of her skin when a hand briefly touches her arm.
“Sorry! Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you!”
“That’s okay,” she gasps. “Now … you’re sure you won’t get in trouble for this?”
Zelda’s willing to use him to get information but she’s not willing to get him fired for it.
“Promise! We’ll have to be a bit sneaky when we leave, but the security guards never leave the castle.”
More good intel. This venture is paying off more than she’d hoped.
Link offers her his arm and that smile, the one that makes her insides feel all gooshy. But she hardens her heart for what feels like the fiftieth time that day. She must remain professional.
“So! Shall we?” he asks.
She gives him her best smile in return, takes his arm, and lets him lead her into the night.

had a bunch of funny dreams last night
unsanitary / death /
woke up in the middle of the night to draw my very good idea for a mashup of subnautica and super mario sunshine i guess
Tumblr media
if it helps, that oval between the two reapers is the island with the cannon that shoots you over to the theme park island.
i dreamed about meeting steve-o and i think having some kind of romantic entanglement with him, but the only part of the dream that was real-time was being made to help him with a stunt where he was going to eat human shit which i really didn’t want to look at
then i dreamed about being in my mom’s old house (she just moved to boston) and i was supposed to keep living there, but i was going to keep living there with my dad, who was there just chilling. i thought that was normal until i remembered my dad died in 2015, and then i was just so excited that he was back, and imagining all the things we could do together, and kinda aware that this was a very tenuous situation, and if i rocked the boat too much it might dissolve.
while i was in her house i found these comics that i had bought in an earlier dream where i was sitting outside my work, and i was looking at them and noticed that they all had a similar theme of having a girl with a sort of angel wheel for a body crying about her boyfriend. one of them was about link from loz flying through the sky and being smooched by a buxom blonde who turned into one of those crying angel women later in the comic, or another was a superhero comic but there was an ad kinda in the style of one of those early 2000s video game ads but it was a “photo” of one of those girls and all these words were around her of the things she was crying about

A yearly ritual
The astronomical year is full of cycles, most determinable with mathematical rigidity, but some few dependent upon human whim, including the timing of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2017 awards ceremony, held at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Their choices for 2017 were recently announced, and there is an ongoing exhibition on site of the prints. The first in ourselection is of a glowing aurora shot at dusk from a plane somewhere over the Russian Far East near Novosibirsk. This wasn't a random shot, the solar storm was known to be on the way, and the photographer made sure he got a ringside seat. Our second shows the moon setting over one of the globe's great basaltic shield volcanoes, Mauna Kea in Hawaii, with several large telescopes capping the edifice (the UK Infrared Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope, Gemini North, and Canada France Hawaii Telescope).
Our third depicts a fascinated stargazer enjoying the marvels of the Southern Skies in Patagonia, in the Glaciares National Park of Argentina. Our next is of a snake of climbers lights as they hike up the iconic granite bulge of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park in California. Our final selection is of polar stratospheric clouds (see http://bit.ly/2xOZHgf for an explanation) shimmering with interference colours snapped over the Lofoten inslands in Norway. As you can see I chose images with an Earthy theme, but plentiful beautiful galaxies and the like are amongst the entries for those who also like that kind of thing.
