'It was Isildur who cut off the finger of the Enemy.'
'Yes, He has only four on the Black Hand, but they are enough,' said Gollum shuddering.
What this tells me is that Gollum was interrogated personally by Sauron. Holy shit. :(

'Away now, Shadowfax! Run, greatheart, run as you have never run before! Now we are come to the lands where you were foaled, and every stone you know. Run now! Hope is in speed!'
Shadowfax tossed his head and cried aloud, as if a trumpet had summoned him to battle. Then he sprang forward. Fire flew from his feet; night rushed over him.
As he fell slowly into sleep, Pippin had a strange feeling: he and Gandalf were still as stone, seated upon the statue of a running horse, while the world rolled away beneath his feet with a great noise of wind.

March 5th
Beneath the walls of Isengard there still were acres tilled by the slaves of Saruman; but most of the valley had become a wilderness of weeds and thorns. Brambles trailed upon the ground...
I mean, if the land is no longer cultivated then they're not weeds, jirt, and are probably doing the land good as well as providing habitat. But now I am wondering if invasive plants are a Thing in middle earth 🤔
At night plumes of vapour steamed from the vents, lit from beneath with red light, or blue, or venomous green.
Am I the only one wondering what on earth Saruman has been doing that makes green light?? Is he inventing color television in there???
the Riders saw to their wonder that the Hand appeared no longer white. It was stained as with dried blood; and looking closer they perceived that its nails were red.
...how'd that happen. Eerie as
He bowed very low, putting his hand upon his breast. Then, seeming not to observe the wizard and his friends, he turned to Éomer and the king.
'Welcome, my lords, to Isengard!' he said. 'We are the doorwardens. Meriadoc, son of Saradoc is my name; and my companion, who, alas! is overcome with weariness' – here he gave the other a dig with his foot – 'is Peregrin, son of Paladin, of the House of Took.
Merry is the funniest person alive and Gimli's outburst after this makes it even better and Théoden witnessing this and going "oh I see, you're besties" is just the best i love them a whole lot
'You do not know your danger, Théoden,' interrupted Gandalf. 'These hobbits will sit on the edge of ruin and discuss the pleasures of the table, or the small doings of their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, and remoter cousins to the ninth degree, if you encourage them with undue patience.'
And you love them for it you cantankerous old bint XD And so do I bc Merry beginning an infodump about pipeweed makes me beam. I miss Hobbits being Hobbits
The hobbits bowed low. 'So that is the King of Rohan!' said Pippin in an undertone. 'A fine old fellow. Very polite.'

''Far away is your home and small concern of yours are the troubles of this land. But it was not by design of your own that you became embroiled in them, and so I will not blame such part as you have played – a valiant one, I doubt not.'
Saruman's manipulation goes a mile a minute but I'll just point out this detail: when appealing to Gimli, he pretends to absolve him of any hurt given, without directly insulting Gimli's autonomy. Gimli makes his own choices firmly and with PRIDE. Saruman doesn't challenge that. He blames the design of another, a grand plan that Gimli has been tangled up in, and praises Gimli himself. He gives him an out, an opportunity to shirk responsibility for his actions without admitting to any weakness of will.
Of course Gimli is way too sharp to be taken in by that, but it's a very clever attempt, at least a little tailored to his temperament, and no doubt also meant for the ears of anyone else listening who might be tempted to accept the play.

The Ents kept on pouring in more water, till all the fires were quenched and every cave filled. The fogs slowly gathered together and steamed up into a huge umbrella of cloud: it must have been a mile high. In the evening there was a great rainbow over the eastern hills; and then the sunset was blotted out by a thick drizzle on the mountain-sides. It all went very quiet. A few wolves howled mournfully, far away.

'Yes, and your road lies with him, I think, Merry. But do not look for mirth at the ending. It will be long, I fear, ere Théoden sits at ease again in Meduseld. Many hopes will wither in this bitter Spring.'
Aragorn has been saying many cheerful things like that

'If he had questioned you, then and there, almost certainly you would have told all that you know, to the ruin of us all. But he was too eager. He did not want information only: he wanted you, quickly, so that he could deal with you in the Dark Tower, slowly. Don't shudder! If you will meddle in the affairs of Wizards, you must be prepared to think of such things. But come! I forgive you. Be comforted! Things have not turned out as evilly as they might.'
He lifted Pippin gently and carried him back to his bed. Merry followed, and sat down beside him.
Speaking of people being interrogated by Sauron... anyway Pippin gets a hug and he deserves ten more!!

Dangerous indeed, but not to all,' said Aragorn. 'There is one who may claim it by right. For this assuredly is the palantír of Orthanc from the treasury of Elendil, set here by the Kings of Gondor. Now my hour draws near. I will take it.'
The palantír is intertwined with and paralleled to the One Ring in plenty of interesting ways but I hadn't noticed this one before!

...the slope of round Dol Baran, the last hill of the northern ranges, greenfooted, crowned with heather. The sides of the glen were shaggy with last year's bracken, among which the tight-curled fronds of spring were just thrusting through the sweet-scented earth. Thornbushes grew thick upon the low banks, and under them they made their camp

Frodo stood up. He had laughed in the midst of all his cares when Sam trotted out the old fireside rhyme of Oliphaunt, and the laugh had released him from hesitation. 'I wish we had a thousand oliphaunts with Gandalf on a white one at their head,' he said.
When packing for a long trip, never forget your Samwise 💖

'You swore a promise by what you call the Precious. Remember that! It will hold you to it; but it will seek a way to twist it to your own undoing. Already you are being twisted. You revealed yourself to me just now, foolishly. Give it back to Sméagol you said. Do not say that again! Do not let that thought grow in you! You will never get it back. But the desire of it may betray you to a bitter end. You will never get it back. In the last need, Sméagol, I should put on the Precious; and the Precious mastered you long ago. If I, wearing it, were to command you, you would obey, even if it were to leap from a precipice or to cast yourself into the fire. And such would be my command. So have a care, Sméagol!'
Sam looked at his master with approval, but also with surprise: there was a look in his face and a tone in his voice that he had not known before. It had always been a notion of his that the kindness of dear Mr. Frodo was of such a high degree that it must imply a fair measure of blindness.
Of course, he also firmly held the incompatible belief that Mr. Frodo was the wisest person in the world (with the possible exception of Old Mr. Bilbo and of Gandalf).
-The Lord of the Rings, book 4, JRRT
Made the cute part extra big bc I love Sam but also this feels like a very significant moment for all three of them. It's a little wrongfooting to see Frodo speak this way. What I noticed this time around is that he actually does sound kind of like Gandalf? Is that just me? Especially the first half

Mildly interesting coincidence of the day: Christopher Lee's birthday was the 27th of May and he played Saruman in the movie 🤷
