To gain or not to gain? #SoundRecordingTips Back off that gain and leave yourself plenty of headroom. There’s nothing worse than a great recording that is ruined because it clipped in one or two unexpected loud moments. Sure, you can try to recover in post but it’s best to get your levels right in the first place. Your preference may vary but I’m usually aiming for -12dB max, or lower to really play it safe. What about noise? There’s no way around it for great audio... this is where investing in good equipment pays off tremendously. Good low noise preamps and low noise microphones will make all the difference. This keeps you well away from your noise floor and lets you safely boost your audio in post. What about limiters? I’m using an entry level professional grade / prosumer grade Zoom F4 with digital limiters so I prefer not to use them.
