2,000-Year-Old Iron Age Hoard Discovered Wales

Searching a field in Wales, a man with a metal detector stumbled upon an artifact buried 2,000 years ago — then he found another.

Metal detectorist Jon Matthews was exploring a pasture in Llantrisant Fawr in March 2019 when he found something, the National Museum Wales said in an April 28 news release shared with McClatchy News.

Matthews dug up the artifact and quickly realized there was a collection of buried treasures, Adelle Bricking, an archaeologist who worked on the excavation, wrote on Twitter. He contacted local archaeological authorities who excavated the area.

Archaeologists identified the 2,000-year-old treasures as Iron Age and ancient Roman pottery vessels, the release said. Eight objects, including two complete pieces, were unearthed from the field.

The artifacts were likely buried together “around the time of the Roman conquest, in the second half of the first century A.D.,” the release said.

One artifact included an ox head bowl handle, photos show. The blue-green metal design has a wide-eyed ox with bowed horns. His lower lip or jaw extends outward into the handle-like loop.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Matthews told Wales Online. “I didn’t think our ancestors could make such a beautiful, beautiful thing. I was quite shocked.”

The excavation team nicknamed the ox “Bovril,” Bricking said. “Imagine our surprise when we flicked off the mud and exposed Bovril’s adorable little face!!!” she wrote.

Excavations also unearthed fragments of two wooden barrels, “an Iron Age bucket with copper alloy fittings; an Iron Age copper alloy... cauldron and strainer; and two Roman copper alloy saucepans,” experts said.

Photos show the ancient Roman saucepan and broken handle.

A pair of metal bucket mounts found at the site have a swirling orange-black design on them, photos show. Other photos show the worn wooden bucket with two rows of metal fittings along the edge.

“I feel honored to have found something so unique that is linked to Wales and our ancestors,” Matthews said in the news release.

The National Museum Wales is interested in acquiring the artifacts after an independent committee has assessed their value, the release said.

Llantrisant Fawr is about 135 miles northwest of London.

Royal rebranding: What will happen to stamps, coins, banknotes and passports?

After 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II had become an intrinsic part of our everyday lives. We're accustomed to seeing her portrait, profile and coat of arms on letters, in our loose change and on cereal boxes - so what will be different now?

All change

All 29 billion coins in circulation in the UK have the Queen's head on them. The most recent design dates from 2015, when she was 88 years old. It was the fifth coin portrait created during her reign.

The Royal Mint won't say how or when it will start issuing coins with King Charles III's head on them, but it's likely that the Queen's coins will remain in circulation for many years, and that the process to replace them will be a gradual one.

Before all British coins were updated for decimalisation in 1971, it was quite normal to find multiple monarchs on your change.

While we don't know what the King's coin portrait will look like, a coin issued in 2018 by the Royal Mint to commemorate his 70th birthday gave us a hint.

And one thing that seems certain is that he will be shown facing the other way - to the left.

Tradition dictates that the direction in which the monarch faces on coins must alternate for each new monarch.

Once signed off by the government, new designs will be manufactured at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, south Wales.

The Queen has appeared on all Bank of England notes since 1960 (notes issued by Scottish and Northern Irish banks do not depict the monarch).

There are about 4.5 billion individual Bank of England notes worth about £80bn in circulation at the moment and, as with coins, these will be gradually phased out.

All notes and coins will remain legal tender. The Bank of England will give lots of notice if that is to change.

Stamps and postboxes

Since 1967, all stamps issued by the Royal Mail have featured an embossed silhouette of the side profile of Queen Elizabeth II.

Royal Mail will now stop producing Queen Elizabeth II stamps - although they can still be used on letters and parcels - and will begin the process to create new ones.

The new King has featured on stamps before, but Royal Mail won't yet say what the new designs with him will look like.

As well as putting the monarch on stamps, the Royal Mail puts royal cyphers on many postboxes.

More than 60% of the UK's 115,000 postboxes carry the EIIR mark of Queen Elizabeth II - E for Elizabeth and R for Regina, which means queen. In Scotland, they feature the Scottish crown.

Outside Scotland, any new postboxes will now feature the King's cypher - but as the number of new boxes installed is quite low, it could be some time before you spot one of these.

Royal seal of approval

From tomato ketchup to packets of cereal to perfume, chances are you will have seen the Royal Arms alongside the words, "By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen" on some of your groceries or other items in your home.

These are products which have been granted a Royal Warrant, meaning that the company who makes them supplies the Royal Households on a regular basis.

For the last century or so the monarch, their consort and heir have each issued their own Royal Warrants - making them grantors - and there are currently about 900 Royal Warrants held by 800 companies.

When a grantor dies, any Royal Warrants they issued become void and the company has two years to stop using the Royal Arms.

(Exceptionally, warrants issued by the Queen Mother stood for five years after her death.)

The warrants Charles has issued as Prince of Wales will continue now that he is King because they go with the household, not the title.

There is an expectation that the new King will now grant his son and heir, Prince William, the ability to issue his own warrants.

Passports still valid

But it's not just money, stamps and warrants that need updating.

All British passports are issued in the name of Her Majesty and are still valid for travel, but for new passports, the wording on the inside of the front cover will be updated to His Majesty.

Some police forces in England and Wales that still feature the royal cypher of Queen Elizabeth II in the centre of their helmet plates will have to make changes.

Barristers and solicitors who have been appointed by the monarch to be Queen's Counsel will now be known as King's Counsel with immediate effect.

And finally, the national anthem will have its words changed from "God Save the Queen."

After Charles is officially proclaimed King in a formal ceremony, a public announcement will be made from the balcony at St James's Palace, including the call: "God Save the King."

The national anthem will then be played with those words sung for the first time since 1952.

Learners at one Rhondda Cynon Taf school have been joined for breakfast by a celebrity guest – Welsh actor Michael Sheen.

The star of stage and screen made a surprise appearance to learners at Tonyrefail Community School, via a Zoom call on the large screen, during a breakfast meeting at the school.

Michael Sheen has starred in many stage productions including Romeo and Juliet, Henry V, Amadeus, and Caligula – which earned him his third Olivier Award nomination. His film and television work includes The Deal (2003), The Queen (2006), Fantabulosa! (2006), Frost/Nixon (2008), The Damned United (2009) and The Special Relationship (2010),

Mr Sheen was keen to join the learners at Tonyrefail Community School to talk about their work with the school’s Author in Residence, the inaugural Children’s Laureate for Wales, Eloise Williams.

Born in Cardiff, Eloise Williams, the Children’s Laureate for Wales, spent her childhood in Llantrisant and now lives in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire. She was educated at Coed yr Esgob Primary School and Y Pant Comprehensive School, before going on to study Drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Acting at Guildford School of Acting, and Creative Writing at Swansea University. She worked as a touring actor and creative practitioner for over a decade before becoming a children’s writer.

Gaynor Davies, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Director of Education and Inclusion Services, said: “This was a day that the learners at Tonyrefail Community School will remember for the rest of their lives. Michael Sheen is one of Wales’ most successful stars of the stage and screen and his works are shown around the world.  “We thank him for taking the time to inspire the learners at Tonyrefail Community School, providing them with plenty to think about and work with.”

Among the subjects Michael Sheen discussed with the learners was the importance of the Welsh language, the differences between Hollywood and Wales and the resurgence of the film and television industry in Wales.

Heather Nicholas, headteacher at Tonyrefail Community School, said: “All at our school are grateful to Michael Sheen for giving up his time to speak to our young learners about their work with the Children’s Laureate for Wales.  “He spent time chatting to them and gave thoughtful, inspirational responses to their questions. He then left our students with a very powerful message about us all having a story to tell and how important it is that we tell it.”

Apparently his own cremation in Llantrisant was so well attended that the town's supply of beer ran out.

Started the day with a letter from my sister down Dorset way. Sheep Market has opened up once again and I'm in dire need of a flock after flystrike and scab killed off the last dregs of the old family flock. Me and Moss, my new collie, will be driving down what was the M4 motorway not only 100 years ago before the climate had healed up from that dreadful industrial revolution business.

We'll set out once I've gotten the old cart ready with pneumatic tyres like the sort you got on the old old bicycles in our ancestors day. There's a nice looking pony for sale, a nordic breed as far as I can tell, near Llantrisant. He'll do nicely for the trip.
