2021.02.16 2nd session of Meguro Rock-May-KanGIG at Zepp Yokohama
The encore of the recorded concert changed, it was such an awesome surprise! Felt a bit more like an actual concert, I love the idea of the changing setlist!😆
When they prepared the stage again for the talk session, Fujieda and Takabayashi came first. F jokingly started the introductions with 'hi this is Fujifuji~ and...' but T didn't realize what's F is doing (or did he?😂) and didn't join😂 after a moment of F waiting he finally joined with '...I'm T'.
Then F invited the band members on the stage and again Die and Kyo came on stage!
Die stayed in the same outfit, but Kyo changed! He had a long oversized greengrey-ish coat and shirt with a scarf thing.
D: はい、Dieでっすー
K: 京です🦊
F started to talk about Kyo's birthday again, but then K casually turned to the side and very casually without a comment pointed his phone at F.
F: are you filming me?!
K: I can't? (あかん?)
F: Ah no, it's okay...
*K continues*
F:... so Happy Birthday Kyo!
...
K: you know, I'm not that happy with the waiting time between the sessions, I'd prefer to do the talk part at the beginning and then go home. I don't want to waste time. We should have two patterns, one with the talking first.
(I guess some fans would be happy with that too😂)
F: (moved to the Rock-May-Kan film topic) so you played your new song, Ochita koto no aru sora there, how was it?
K: it was okay, it went smoothly
D said something like the song was ok, it will likely change/transform when the tour comes (?)
F: so it wasn't hard.
D: the hard part was that the stage was so narrow there was only space for few extra people (cameramen), all other staff were waiting in the audience area
F: so when you had to change guitars etc they had to climb the stage?
D: also with guitar tunning, especially the 7 string one, it's really tough and takes time, so it felt there wasn't enough time during short breaks between the songs. Toshiya always does tunning humself, I don't, I guess I should improve that a bit.
F: any songs that stood out?
K: I guess Jealous
F: in what way?
K: the arrangement was too old, it's actually embarrassing (how bad it is), the lyrics too. I changed the lyrics, I was laughing internally at myself, but I couldn't change the arrangement. it was like hell.
He also complained that some parts were too high, they were hard to sing. Some parts changed the piano intro done by Takumi etc, he didn't want to listen to the CD, old version, because it was too embarrassing.
F: and it became a 2021 version?
K: I want to change it even more, make it less troublesome for me.
D: it wasn't hard for me, but it is old, so the song's speed doesn't match my body anymore (not too fast, just wrong speed), it was easy to play though.
K: but it was hard to know how to move during the song.
*Kyo then showed us a movement he got unhappy with*
K: So I moved as little as possible
F: it didn't look like you had this much trouble
K: I'm a pro in the end.
😆
F next talked about the release of Oboro on April 28th.
F: K, you said that Oboro is refreshing. How about TDFF?
K: てんでだめなぶしぶし (TendeDamenaFujiFuji can translate to 'utterly useless Fujieda')
🤣
F: D, you said it's powerful, what about Oboro?
D: the music video is good. The filming took quite a long time, the way we used to do it in the past.
K: it was [refreshingly] cool, too fresh (light).
D: it got refreshing from about halfway?
F then talked about the merchandise. He started with the travel poach, he held it up and moved it closer to the center of the table so fans could see it on the screen in the back. But by doing that it ended up quite close to Kyo's head. K gave F a super bewildered look, turned to check the screen in the back and then continued to give F evil glares of 'why you doin this to me'😂
K: I thought that rubber keychains are so cute! We should release the older costume versions as well (he got applause from the audience for that).
K then commented it looks so cute that they all got beheaded with their heads so low, like they're holding their heads.
D grabbed the rechargeable heat pack and said (totally sarcastic): ah so wa~rm...
😂
F: the highest temperature is 40℃.
K: (gets the pack) Can you charge devices with it? Huh, it just gets hot? When you're in trouble or sth you can't use it as charger? People would have wanted that in December...
F: ...(passes it to Die)
D: it's exactly the same temperature as the charging phone...
F next showed us the usb power strip holding it over Kyo, K got uncomfortable again😅
After that they moved to the questions from fans.
D: "anything you were particular about when creating the setlist?" We added songs we were thinking about playing at SOGAI, so also some older songs.
F: do you have any good questions?
K passes one paper to F.
F reads: "did F do anything to make you angry?"
and K replied with a list😂 the main was again F's easy ハイハイハイ ( like yeayeah) or biting his lips.
F: how about you D?
D: nothing really.
F: " do you have favourite ramen?"
K (immediately): Jiroken. And it has to be smaller noodle portion with more toppings (麺少なめ全マシ), it's the best.
D: I don't really eat ramen.
F: you also said no McDonald.
D: yeah
F: Have you tried Jiro?
D: once or so
K (concerned😂): did you eat normal ramen? Which shop?
he made sure Die knows which ramen to order and which shop is the best😂
T: "which venue would you like to play at next?"
D said not exactly a venue, he would like to go to prefectures they haven't been to yet.
K: Nagoya Music Fan.
F: in Fujigaoka?
T: Does it still exist?
F: yeah.
T: let's discuss it in the future (aka not very likely?😂)
F: but it's not impossible!
F then picked a 'combo-question': "do you use any perfumes? What are you crazy about now? What kind of BGM do you play at home?"
K: I don't use perfume. I have a bar soap I like, the old style one with an image of cow on it. It doesn't have a strong smell.
F: how about BGM?
K: I only play Fortnite. Ah, but now the Chinese buns skins are on sale. I've been playing for a year and only saw someone using it once. Somehow I like the least popular skin.
K: at home I also eat cookies. Chocolate cookies.
F: what kind/brand?
K: Any.
D: I use perfume / he said he got Fueguia (but then there was some thing wrong with the frangrance after a while, it went away???)
And no crazes or BGMs.
D: "when you travel on work to other cities, are your seats on bullet train decided? Do you sit next to someone?"
D: it's not really decided, we travel by ourselves (??), most of us prefer aisle seat. So I was surprised when once Shinya asked if we could swap so he can get the window side.
F: and you K, window or aisle?
K: Definitely aisle. If you're on the window side and someone next to you falls asleep it's really rude to wake them up if you need to get up. I prefer to be woken up than wake someone up.😇
D: There's also the table.
K: aaah, Shinya likes window seat so you could put the table down with some food on top of it and then pretend to be dead sleeping.😈
The change😂 he was laughing so much at the idea too😂
F: "what's your preference for the food at venues?" (??)
K: sushi.
D: like in Shinkiba.
K: yeah, I get so excited.
F: We also had sushi in the US.
K: We got it from a fan.
D told us a story how he was able to start eating eel/unagi, he doesn't like fishbones but once in Nagoya everyone was having hitsumabushi backstage and saying how good it is, so he tried and actually liked it.
F: "Did you watch any good movies recently? I watched Miike's 'Imprint'". Do you know this movie, K?
K: Yeah, it as good.
F: you watch movies often.
K: Recently I watched Rob Zombie's '3 from Hell'.
F: how about you, D?
D: a movie with Tachi Hiroshi, a new one, about yakuza (he didn't remember the title, but most likely ヤクザと家族 The Family (2021)).
F: "Do you have a favourite fruit?"
K: melon.
F: do you eat it at home?
K: no・食べない
F: do you eat it if it's backstage?
K: yes・食べる
F: but at home?
K: no・食べない
F: melon...
K: like・好き
👨‍👦
F: do you eat melons at home, D?
D: I don't.
T: "who do you like from Fist of the North Star?"
D: I saw it, but I don't remember details.
K gave a very detailed answer but as I haven't seen it I didn't really get it (the only name I caught was Shuren)😅 but he compared one character to F?😆
And then came Kyo's biggest laughing fit.
The question was about some story about other members they remember the most. Kyo talked about how once Kaoru had trouble with the mic stand and guitar cable, the cable got twisted around the stand and Kaoru ended up empty handed which Kyo found very amusing. Then Kyo just kept gesturing the 'round round・ぐるぐる' bit and he was laughing so much he started crying🤣
But then Die said he had a similar situation once and F replied he remembers that. Kyo burst out again and then it was also Die's turn to just lose it🤣
The laughers to the point of tears continued for a while as they tried to calm down😂
But then.
Then.
Suddenly the backscreen went black with a message 'battery empty, please change battery' and the venue that was giggling because of band members also exploded.
The timing was just too much🤣🤣🤣
F said it's time to finish anyway and asked them for the last comments for the fans, starting from Die.
Die: ... 🤣... can't think of... anything🤣...I'm crying🤣
F: ... let's go from Kyo
K: ... I don't have anything to say... all...
(a moment)
Kyo: I don't have any big message. But please wait a bit more for the new single. It will be like Taiyou no Ao 2.0, in a good way. ...or Taiyou no Ao remix.
Die: Thank you for coming today. ... I'd really love to do a normal tour soon, shows with audience. For now please enjoy the concert film from Rock-May-Kan, but in the future let's enjoy the show all together... I still can't stop tearing up🤣 ok, I'm done.
A marvelous ending of even more marvelous day😆💚❤️

If you’ve been lucky, you’ve found yourself in some college dorm, surrounded by DayGlo tapestries, Nag Champa wafting in the air, stinging your eyes. Your singularly nicknamed but gracious hosts and their friends argue. It’s always the same argument: over the so-called greatest Grateful Dead show ever. More often than not, they were arguing about the merits or flaws of Cornell. May 8, 1977.
Or maybe it was at a record store. The store’s owner was “there” but can’t remember a damn thing, minus the “One More Saturday Night” encore on a Sunday night. Oh wait, there was the infamous “Take a Step Back” and that “Dew.” The Dew.
Last week, the recordings saw release as part of the box set, May 77: Get Shown the Light, and as a stand-alone set, Cornell 5/8/77, in honor of the show’s 40th anniversary. I’ve witnessed grown men argue about Cornell until they were carnelian red in the face, later apologizing as they rambled, “The Dead are like pizza, man. Some shows are better than others. But it’s still pizza and pizza rules.”
Myself? Cornell came in the same batch of tapes as Buffalo, the night after, and the Live/Dead Fillmore West run of 1969. Buffalo has the opening “Help > Slip > Franklin’s” triptych that’s a mind-meld when you’re 15, just being hipped to the whole thing. It only took one listen of Cornell before I was like, “Well you know, Buffalo is just a little bit…”
Grateful Dead :: Dancing in the Street [Betty Board]
Grateful Dead :: Dancing in the Street [Jerry Moore recording]
Cornell is mythical though, and for good reason. The tapes and name are ubiquitous to every collection and discussion about the band. The venue only held 8,500 attendees, but four times that amount will tell you they were there. Some will tell you it was a CIA experiment that never happened. Some say you’re not a true fan if it’s your favorite show. There’s a stigma associated with being a Cornell apologist.
But why be unapologetic when it’s right there on the tape? It smokes. A spirited first set is capped by a never-ending version of Martha and The Vandellas’ soul hit “Dancing in The Streets,” offering the audience a sneak peek into the wrinkle in time they are about to experience “30 minutes” later. The second set’s near flawless. The band conjures up the spirits of Ivy League drop-outs who jumped in busses a decade before and headed west to change and find the new world. Someone said to me recently we’re lucky to live in the same millennium Jerry and the Dead existed. Pizza is pizza, sure, but wouldn’t it be boring without pepperoni and cheese?
Below, my friend Charlie C. — you might remember him from the last Dead Notes column — waxes a bit about his journey to Cornell and the years after. Charlie was supposed to go to Cornell for Poli-Sci, but he went to SUNY Oneonta instead – though he’ll tell you he studied plenty of political science on long midnight roads and in crowded parking lots between Dead shows. I encourage you to listen to not only just the new official Betty Board release of “Dancing In The Street” but also infamous Dead taper Jerry Moore’s recording, captured 10 feet from the stage, which circulated nearly a decade before Betty’s recording surfaced. When I finally heard Jerry’s recording several years back, I became an instant Cornell apologist or whatever you want to call it when you love a band – infamous warts and all. words/d norsen
Well, they were back, there was no getting around that.
We had seen them off back in Jersey City in 1974 and were well informed about the Ouroborian hiatus through the newsletter. A quaint document by today’s standards and inside there was something to the effect of…the intent of the widespread touring was not to create this steamroller of music that we would follow around from here to there but instead to plant a seed and we would do as they did. Form and grow a community, of which the music would be a part, and nurture that community because it would be more efficient that way. I would hear that intent again, while listening to “The Music Never Stopped” – “Were they really here at all?” But I digress. There was the East Coast mini-farewell in the summer – a huge wonderful show at Roosevelt Stadium! If you can find an image of the ticket on-line you may notice that the date on ticket does not match the show date. You will also see the words “To Be Held Rain or Shine”. That part is a lie. Look up hiatus, if you will – a break, a pause. So that part is not a lie. So when I traveled West to see the band at Golden Gate Park in 1975 – the pause was not even a year old.
And then, they were back! We, on the other hand, had never left. This time, now Spring 1977, my friends and I were now living in Oneonta, New York. I left Staten Island to attend college there in the Fall of 1971 and stayed around. If you can locate my high school yearbook, it will tell you that I intended to major in Poli-Sci at Cornell. So, it was half right.
As I was saying, they were back and with a vengeance or so it would seem from the available dates. Now we are talking pre-mail order here, folks. 10 years later I would gladly pay more for Registered Mail than we paid for a ticket on May 8 in Ithaca, New York. There were a bunch of us. In a van, straight out of central casting, trundling our way from Oneonta to Ithaca. Let me emphasize that this was closer to a Sunday night drive than event. As passionate as we were about the band the whole day had a “Hey, the Dead are in Ithaca Sunday!” feel to it. Spring comes begrudgingly to upstate New York, if it comes at all, so it was cool. The scene was decidedly different from the hockey arenas of 1974, my beloved Roosevelt Stadium, and a world apart from the Auditorium Theatre shows of 1976. Barton Hall was a field house. A Latin term meaning “without any trace of charm.” May as well have been Barton Barn for all that mattered. But it was general admission for us. I do remember these enormous windows, a whole wall of them. And as it began to darken there was a cathedral like effect to the interior. Now there was a curious phenomenon at these GA events. Some folks would attempt to stake out and secure small patches of ground for themselves and their tribe. Others would simply float. To the former, the latter were violators, trespassers. The latter saw their efforts as an uptight attempt to colonize a free space. Always plenty of free theater in those days.
So – to recap: no seating, no merchandise, no beer sales, no Greenpeace. There was only the band with their fans and the air to help convey the music. The sound was fine – objectivity now, slightly shattered by certain indulgences. But we were in. Together. More or less in line, you know the deal. We snaked our way towards the stage as soon as the music started. Not right up front though – we struck a balance between hearing and moving. We needed to do both.
Should I talk about the music? Do we need one more word? One more “jaunty,” another “rollicking”? So much has been written about this show it boggles the mind. A book even! Someone wrote a book about a show I was at!?! It was a grand night, as most of them were. It would be some time before the legend picked up steam however.
Just look at the set list. Set one: start to finish, “polished like a golden bowl, the finest ever seen”. I am okay with that. I do distinctly remember thinking that somehow we would not survive the “Dancing In The Streets.” It was too much, too fast. I can not count the times I have listened to the “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire On The Mountain” since. If you can stay still, you are a better man than me. Best “Morning Dew” ever? Don’t ask me. I don’t deal in that. Never did. But it is goddamned flawless I will tell you that. “One More Saturday Night” on a Sunday? I am okay with that one too…it was no skating rink, but for a minute, it almost became airborne.
So that was that. Our “springtime wet with sighs.” We left to find Jim’s blue van. Tossed back a couple of beers to kind of recalibrate. And then back on the road home. If you told me on that ride back to Oneonta what that night would become, I would have laughed myself silly. Most requested show ever, UFOs and the CIA, Betty Board here and gone and back again, a box set, Plangent Process, and a book. All for one Sunday night…go figure!

Learning English is VOA’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide. At the end of March, a VOA Learning English team travelled to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, to train 100 English teachers using a range of multimedia materials. The training program includes follow-up virtual classroom sessions, as well as VOA Learning English content accessible at the camp’s learning centers and though mobile devices. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees invited VOA to provide six days of intensive training on teaching techniques and methods for selected teachers. The teachers, in turn, will use the acquired knowledge to train another 3,000 of their colleagues in order to provide English lessons for refugees in the camp. The refugees requested this training during a visit by VOA Director Amanda Bennett at the Cox’s Bazar camps last year. Rahma Rashid Toki, one of the selected teachers, told the VOA Learning English team he was ready to quit on the first day of training. By the end of the course, Toki commented: “When I came to the first day of training, I felt nervous. I decided I will not continue. Already I had applied to leave. But my P.O. (personnel officer) would not accept my application to leave. He said to me that this training is important and necessary. Now that the training is finished, I realize it’s really important for me and my students!” Francis Nath a UN Education Associate at Cox’s Bazar who assisted with the training, said “you can see the [teachers’] level of English competency improve dramatically by the second day.” VOA’s Learning English service uses clear and simple vocabulary to teach American English on radio, television, Internet, and mobile. Learning English began as Special English, which VOA launched in 1959. Special English newscasts and features were a primary fixture of VOA’s international shortwave broadcasts for more than half a century. In 2014, the line of products was expanded to include more English teaching materials, and the service became known as Learning English. Spoiler alert: it’s amazing–! Below, I’ve included the description and audio links from the BBC World Service: New York City’s pirates of the air As the workday winds down across New York, you can tune in to a clandestine world of unlicensed radio stations; a cacophonous sonic wonder of the city. As listeners begin to arrive home, dozens of secret transmitters switch on from rooftops in immigrant enclaves. These stations are often called ‘pirates’ for their practice of commandeering an already licensed frequency. These rogue stations evade detection and take to the air, blanketing their neighbourhoods with the sounds of ancestral lands blending into a new home. They broadcast music and messages to diverse communities – whether from Latin America or the Caribbean, to born-again Christians and Orthodox Jews. Reporter David Goren has long followed these stations from his Brooklyn home. He paints an audio portrait of their world, drawn from the culture of the street. Vivid soundscapes emerge from tangled clouds of invisible signals, nurturing immigrant communities struggling for a foothold in the big city. Each year, WARD celebrates Amateur Radio’s contribution to society. Groups in the US and around the world will celebrate WARD 2019 with on-the-air activities. “I am pleased to extend my greetings for World Amateur Radio Day,” IARU President Tim Ellam, VE6SH, said. “April 18 is the day for all of Amateur Radio to celebrate and tell the world about the science we can help teach, the community service we can provide, and the fun we have. I would encourage all radio amateurs to join in the celebrations and promote Amateur Radio on the air or in your community.” Amateur Radio experimenters were the first to discover that the shortwave spectrum was not the wasteland experts of the time considered it to be but a resource that could support worldwide propagation. In the rush to use these shorter wavelengths, Amateur Radio was “in grave danger of being pushed aside,” the IARU’s history notes. Amateur Radio pioneers met in Paris in 1925 and created the IARU to support Amateur Radio around the globe. Two years later, at the International Radiotelegraph Conference, Amateur Radio gained allocations still recognized today — 160, 80, 40, 20, and 10 meters. More bands have followed, and the IARU has been working to defend and expand Amateur Radio frequency allocations ever since. From the 25 countries that formed the IARU in 1925, the IARU has grown to include 160 member-societies in three regions. IARU Region 1 includes Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and northern Asia. Region 2 covers the Americas, and Region 3 is comprised of Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific island nations, and most of Asia. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recognized the IARU as representing the interests of Amateur Radio. Groups are encouraged to promote their WARD activity on social media by using the hashtag #WorldAmateurRadioDay on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. On-the-Air Activities Brazil: LABRE Roraima, PV8AA, will sponsor various activities and satellite operations with participation by Scouts, including young Venezuelan refugees. Denmark: Operators in Denmark will be permitted to use the call signs 5P0WARDand 5P0WHD on April 18. Single operators will be assigned a special suffix extension (00 to 99) to distinguish individual stations, e.g., 5P0WARD/36 or 5P0WHD/7. Danish Contest Academy station OZ5E will be active as 5P0WARD/60. Awards will be available for contacts with stations on all modes and bands. France: TM94WARD will mark World Amateur Radio Day, under sponsorship of the REF, France’s IARU member-society. It will be on the air on April 13 – 21. Malaysia: 9M4CMN will be on the air from Segamat, in southern Malaysia, and 9M4CKK will be active from Tumpat, on the east coast of Malaysia, from 0230 until 1530 UTC on April 18. Portugal: The Rede dos Emissores Portugueses (RED) will hold an open house at its headquarters on April 18, demonstrating an installation of a portable and low-power amateur station, as well as how to operate it and how to transport it. United States: The Fair Lawn (NJ) Amateur Radio Club (FLARC) will hold an open house on April 18, from 2 PM until 9 PM EDT at the FLARC clubhouse at the Fair Lawn Recreation Center, 10-10 20th Street, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Club members will be available to demonstrate the stations, and to discuss the many interests of Amateur Radio operators and the role that individual hams and clubs play by providing public service communication. Worldwide: The World Radio Network and the World Friendship Net will participate in World Amateur Radio Day 2019 using special event call sign W2W. A commemorative QSL card will be available, and a 12-hour net will be convened with net controllers from around the world. Join the commemoration at 1600 UTC via Echolink on the World Conference server (IRLP 9251) and on Allstar Node #47620 – World Conference Hub. Favorite you tube video picks for 2018! (carried over from 2017)
I slipped up and missed the deadline for my end of 2017 super You Tube picks–realizing a bit late, that readers were celebrating the New Year in different time zones. Piano lovers from Japan and Australia had already popped champagne bottles 18 or so hours before those of us partook on the West Coast–And with USA Central, Mountain, Pacific and Eastern Standard times causing out of synch drifts of celebration, my Big Five You Tube List fizzled at 9 p.m. P.S.T, Dec. 31, as the stroke of Midnight Times Square (E.S.T.) ball drop welcomed 2018!
Still, redemption lay in a timeless series launched by the New York Times with long columns of piggy-backed you tube videos, Classical in genre, that were time-monitored for their mind-blowing moments. They fleshed out feats of virtuosity; heaven-on-earth phrase turns; wailing trills and heart-melting cadences. A harpist, Amy Turk, was singled out for her miraculous transcription/performance of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, amassing over 4 million views!
It became my bonus heist pick, falling outside keyboard bounds.

**** In the Piano Universe
Luis Fernando Perez
http://www.luisfernandoperez.com/homepage.html
The artistry of Luis Fernando Pérez (Spain, b. 1977) topped my list, though choices following, from various years, accorded no preferential order.
Pianist, Perez, was my most treasured “new” You Tube surfing discovery, though he’d been circulating through Europe for years as soloist, chamber music player, and recording artist, earning performance awards along the way. Yet even with prestigious IMG Management, Perez had not reached the pinnacle of “big Name,” billboard success, having instead chosen a more true-to-art journey, reflected in his passion for Spanish repertoire that he chose to play in selected concert venues. (Carnegie Hall, or the Walt Disney complex were not along his musical route)
Perez’s website had revealed touch-downs at European Festivals interspersed by a foray to Kansas for a Master class and performance. He landed in North Carolina for a recital, though his travels inevitably pointed back to Europe.
In 2014, Perez played in Bilbao, Nantes, Paris, Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, San Sebastian, Brussels, Saint Petersburg, Budapest, Warsaw, Tokyo, Lyon, and Toulouse, with no further Internet posted concerts on his site. Judging by a significant escalation in Internet exposure post 2014, his energies seemed redirected to the recording cosmos.
Bryce Morrison, published a 2012 review in Gramaphone that amply described the pianist’s abundant gifts.
“RISING TO PRISTINE GLORY: Luis Fernando Pérez is clearly among the most individual and gifted pianists of today’s generation.
“And, in his more recent disc of Granados’s Goyescas, his playing is audaciously personal and has an improvisatory freedom and coloration very much his own. He achieves a superb senseof contrast, of innocence and experience…”
***
Perez’s interpretation of Spanish music is compelling as “channeled” through his performance of Enrique Granados Valses Poeticos. His radiant singing tone; broad palette of “colors,” and poignant creation of emotional intimacy draw the listener into a deep and abiding relationship with the composer.

Seymour Bernstein: A newly discovered awakening to tempo and mood in the Schumann Arabesque
A previous blog gave details and background about Bernstein’s epiphanies:
https://arioso7.wordpress.com/2017/08/30/pianist-seymour-bernstein-revisits-the-schumann-arabesque-at-the-age-of-90/
Seymour’s performance speaks for itself with its effortless spill of melody bundled in harmonic warmth. There’s no tempo impetuosity, or pre-meditated, boundary-determined section transitions. It’s all woven together as pure poetry flowing from the heart.

*** David Fray: A humbling encore follows a concerto performance:
J.S. Allemande from Partita No. 6 in E minor
This is an inspired rendering, well-voiced by Maestro Fray.

Irina Morozova – Bortkiewicz Etude Opus 15, No 9

Yo-Yo Ma and Petunia
Famed Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma was born October 7, 1955 in Paris, France to mother Marina Lu, a singer, and father Hiao-Tsiun Ma, violinist and professor at Nanjing National Central University. Yo-Yo Ma began his career at the age of 4, performing for United States Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy at the age of 8, and has produced a variety of high-profile performances and works over his 57-year long career since. Yo-Yo Ma has attended both the Juilliard School (from which he dropped out of at the age of 19) and Harvard College. He has created 90 albums to date, and has received 18 Grammy Awards. Yo-Yo Ma currently resides in the United States with wife Jill Hornor, and has two children, Nicholas and Emily Ma.
Yo-Yo Ma’s primary performance instrument, a cello named “Petunia”, was constructed in 1733 and is currently valued at US $2.5 million. This cello received its title from a student who, after attending a class of his in Salt Lake City, asked if the cello had a name, to which Yo-Yo Ma replied: “No, but if I play it for you, will you name it?” In an anecdote from 1999, Yo-Yo Ma recalls how he once left the cello in a taxi-cab after a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The cello was found and returned through police efforts with no damages shortly afterwards.
Petunia Mayweather was born October 5, 1990 in San Bernandino, California to father Thomas Mayweather, an investment banker, and Felicia Mayweather, an advertising executive. She has no siblings. She is unmarried, with no children. Petunia Mayweather currently resides in Burbank, California.
At the age of 9, Petunia’s parents took her to see a live performance by Yo-Yo Ma while on vacation. After witnessing Yo-Yo Ma play on his cello, young Petunia had an epiphany. From that day on, Petunia knew she had a mission in life. That sole mission: to destroy Yo-Yo Ma’s prized cello.
For 12 years, Petunia honed her mind and body to fulfill her goal.
Today, at the age of 21, Petunia would finally see her mission completed.
Petunia sits in the concert hall. There is a plush seat underneath her, and rows of people around her. In front of her, Yo-Yo Ma performs on his stage. Yo-Yo Ma is playing Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite #5 in C Minor. It is a song Petunia is very familiar with. She focuses on the clear notes threading off of Yo-Yo Ma’s horse-hair bow. She listens to the hearty sound of his strings. She looks at his slim fingers. She sees his calm, determined face.
At the exact middle of the song, Petunia jumps onto the stage. She draws her sword at Yo-Yo Ma. She says:
“Yo-Yo Ma. I am Petunia Mayweather, age 21. I have come for your cello’s life.”
Yo-Yo Ma does not respond. Yo-Yo Ma continues to play.
“Hear me,” Petunia says, “Yo-Yo Ma. I have come to destroy your cello once and for all.”
Still, Yo-Yo Ma continues to play.
“I have alerted you,” Petunia says, “and now, I will strike.”
Petunia crests her blade above. She swings full force at the cello below.
Without missing a note, Yo-Yo Ma catches the blade within his bow. The sword is lodged within it. It slides along to his strokes. Yo-Yo Ma continues to play.
“I see you have business with me,” Yo-Yo Ma says,
Petunia draws her sword back.
“Tch,” Petunia says.
She swings the blade at the cello again. Before Petunia can see, Yo-Yo Ma snatches the sword out of her hands mid-motion, and plays it along the cello strings as a second bow. The sharp edge of the sword slides tenderly over the strings, without harming a single one. Yo-Yo Ma continues to play.
“Disgusting,” Petunia says.
“If you would like to destroy my cello,” Yo-Yo Ma says, “please, be just a bit patient.”
Petunia sits down on the stage.
“Not like I can do much without my weapon,” she says.
“Ah,” Yo-Yo Ma says.
His performance is forceful and tender as the sea.
“Is that so,” Yo-Yo Ma says.
“This experience,” Petunia says, “is this really the first time your cello has been under attack?”
Yo-Yo Ma chuckles. “If you would like your sword back, “Yo-Yo Ma says, “I would be honored if you could hold it down here, and play with me.”
Petunia says nothing.
“It would be my pleasure,” Yo-Yo Ma says.
Petunia watches Yo-Yo Ma’s slim fingers play. She squints her eyes. She scoffs. She wants her sword back.
She puts her hands onto the sword, over the cello. Yo-Yo Ma’s hands cover hers.
“Ah, you seem to know the proper technique and posture as well,” Yo-Yo Ma says. “Do you know Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D?”
Petunia does not respond. She glides the sword over the string, guided by Yo-Yo Ma. The cello moans a full-fleshed note from its wooden frame.
“Very good,” says Yo-Yo Ma.
Petunia threads the blade along the strings, to the shape of Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Her sword cuts hills and valleys into the air as she plays. She draws and lunges and carves its sound through the stage. Her fingers are a tide, locking and retreating on the notes. Her performance storms through the entire concert hall. It is as forceful and tender as the sea.
“Wonderful,” Yo-Yo Ma says. “You play just as well as I do, Petunia.”
Petunia plays Pachelbel’s Canon. She plays and plays, until the song reaches finale, and she stops. Applause erupts from the audience. It thunders over Petunia. Yo-Yo Ma grabs her hand. They both bow.
Petunia looks to Yo-Yo Ma. “Now,” she says, with sword in one hand, “it is time for your cello to end.”
“Ah,” Yo-Yo Ma says, “but look at the audience.”
Petunia looks back to the audience below her. Thousands stand up from their seats. Their clapping bursts in Petunia’s ears. Their cheering weighs a mountain of noise.
“They want an encore.”
Petunia blinks. She holds her sword in one hand. She holds the cello in the other.
Petunia sits down. Yo-Yo Ma sits with her.
“This next song,” Yo-Yo Ma speaks into the microphone, “I performed with singer Bobby McFerrin in 1992 for an album, titled Hush. I’m sure many of you in the audience will be familiar with it.” Yo-Yo Ma cleared his throat. “It’s called, ‘Hush Little Baby’.”
Petunia puts her sword to the cello strings. Petunia plays Hush. Petunia’s performance is immaculate. Even the sound of Bobby McFerrin’s vocals seems to resonate off of the cello. Every stroke of her bow has the precision of an archer, and the flow of a painter. Once Petunia’s performance ends, the audience again explodes into applause. Yo-Yo Ma smiles at Petunia. Petunia does not smile back.
For the rest of the night, Yo-Yo Ma and Petunia continue their performance. They play the rest of Bach’s Cello Suite. They play The Flight of the Bumblebee. They play bluegrass, and tango. They play classical, and Blondie’s “Heart of Glass”, and the Superman theme. They play jazz and folk and traditional and the works of the Beatles. They play long into the night. Their performance is critically acclaimed, and highly lauded. The applause from the concert hall is heard over the city block.
Eventually, late night sets in. The performance ends, and curtains drop. Petunia grasps her sword. She looks into Yo-Yo Ma’s eyes.
“Thank you,” Yo-Yo Ma says. “Your performance was truly wonderful.
Petunia says nothing.
“Go on, Petunia. I have no regrets.”
Petunia’s eyes scroll over the cello. She notes every groove in the oak grain. Each streak of light flowing down its frame. The curves in its outline. The detailing.
Then Petunia stabs into the wood body of the cello. Petunia strikes the cello. Petunia pulls her sword from the cello, and cuts it in half. Petunia cuts those halves into halves. Petunia cuts each half into dust. Petunia minces the dust into pieces of dust. Petunia minces those pieces into pieces.
Petunia’s eyes turn back into Yo-Yo Ma’s.
“Wonderful, Petunia,” Yo-Yo Ma tells her. “Wonderful.”
After that, Petunia gathers up the dust of the cello. And Petunia walks herself home.
Over the next several months, Petunia pieces each grain of cello dust back together. It takes her nearly a year of work, but eventually, she repairs the cello back to its original form. On the night she completes her mission, Petunia takes herself a moment of rest. The next day, she places the cello in her room. She seats herself with it on a chair. She lathers rosin onto her bow. She places the bow onto the string. And Petunia plays Bach’s Cello Suite #5 in C Minor. Her song twists in her eardrums. It marches through the house. It travels on the wind. It echoes to the sea.
It is nothing like Yo-Yo Ma’s performance.
Petunia continues to play.
